Fundación Leer signed a license agreement
with Reading is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), an
organization that works since 1966 in the field
of reading promotion. In this way, it managed
to apply its programs in Argentina, making all
the necessary adjustments to adapt them to
the local reality.
In 2004, Fundación Leer started to work
jointly with the Open Society Institute to
implement in Argentina its program Step by
Step, in order to improve school performance
through teaching strategies. This program
includes the families in the educational
process of children, and fosters democratic
values in school.
From its very beginnings, Fundación Leer
has developed its own programs with the
objective to respond to specific needs and
problems identified within our country.

provided 300 books to create a Reading Corner in a kindergarten located
in the city of Buenos Aires. Thanks to BGH support, two institutions in
the provinces of Tucumán and Tierra del Fuego could open their Reading
Corners, that included 820 new books; Culligan Argentina sponsored the
opening of a Reading Corner in one institution in Tucumán which had
300 specially selected books; Xtrata Cooper did the same in San Juan
distributing 410 books in a chosen institution and Tecpetrol favored four
schools in Salta distributing a total of 900. Banco Galicia aided a school
in Santiago del Estero, giving a total of 586 books for different activities.

In 2011 and thanks to the support of Santander Río, Tecpetrol
and Rousselot Argentina, the Reading Marathons program was
implemented in 24 institutions in the provinces of Chaco, Córdoba,
Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Mendoza, Neuquén, Río Negro, Santa Fe,
Tucumán y Buenos Aires.
The program –developed during the academic year and structured
around three marathons in which participates the educational
community—included leaders and teachers training and reached
to 3,552 children who shared positive reading experiences. Along
this program, 8,280 new literature books for children and young
people were distributed.
The only school of the Antártida Argentina was also benefitted
with the program Reading Marathons thanks to the support of an
individual donor who favored fifteen children with the distribution
of 77 books.
Open Book Project: Teacher
training and new spaces for
reading
This project strengthens literacy activities at school thanks to the
creation of “Reading Corners” with new literature books adequate to
the ages of the beneficiary children and teacher training.
The families and the members of each educational community
participated in the creation of those spaces where children and parents
can read and carry out other activities.
In the year 2011, many companies and organizations supported the
implementation of this program. Just to mention some: Fundación Air
Liquide sponsored this program in four schools in Neuquén distributing
1,120 books among them; EMC Computer Systems Argentina S.A.
which made its realization possible with the distribution of 1,385
books for 540 children in three institutions of the city of Buenos Aires
and surrounding area; within the framework of this program, Banelco

Family of Readers
Since 2008, the program Family of Readers is being implemented in
Comodoro Rivadavia, province of Chubut thanks to TECPETROL S.A..
In the year 2011 three kindergartens of this city participated in it. Each
institution built up its own Reading Corner with 300 new books. Teachers
also invited parents to participate in three workshops where they discussed
the promotion of reading habits and family literacy.
“The opening was wonderful. We had been working hard
so everything would be perfect. The kids acted and then
they read in the workshops together with the families.
It was a beautiful moment; we enjoyed it as much as
they did. The mobile corner is very nice, the parents
congratulated us and were greatly pleased with the new
books. We we deeply appreciate this opportunity and
we are already starting to plan the activities to carry out

Prepared for Life
Thanks to the support of Monsanto Fund and Monsanto Argentina
S.A. this program could be implemented in six institutions in the
province of Buenos Aires, with a total of 1,587 books distributed.
The program is aimed at children aged nine to twelve, and is
based on the development of the skills children will need to
be part of society. These skills allow the children to develop a
positive attitude towards themselves and others, to take care of
themselves and of others, to make decisions with good judgment
and responsibility, to establish goals for themselves and overcome
difficulties that arise to meet them.
Reading Sciences
Thanks to the support of Dow Argentina, Fundación Leer could carry
out the program Reading Sciences in ten schools in Bahía Blanca,
province of Buenos Aires and Rosario, province of Santa Fe. The
program included the creation and opening of thematic Reading
Corners, science fairs, the publishing of a science magazine and the
implementation of Book Events in which children could choose a book
to take home. The program helps children better understand sciences
as it promotes their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
The educational authorities expressed Fundación Leer their satisfaction
for these activities and the results reached at schools.
Besides, in 2011 Pan American Energy sponsored the program Family of
Readers in three kindergartens and one nursery in Sarmiento, province
of Chubut. Within the framework of this program 525 books of children
literature were distributed, benefitting 254 children. This program was
also implemented in Pico Truncado, province of Santa Cruz benefiting
eighty children with the distribution of 468 literature books.

Reading promotion

libraries
The program Reading Corners in Libraries
keeps on growing
Libriaries and the
community: a bond that
gets stronger every year.
Through its sponsorship of the Reading Corners in Libraries, La Anónima opened two children’s reading corners: one in Sierra Grande, province of Rio Negro, and the other one in
Puerto San Julián, province of Santa Cruz. The project aim is to create a bond among children
and books and expand positive experiences around reading. Libraries received 1,200 new
literature books for children and young people in order to create their own Reading Corners.
With the support of La Anónima, thirty libraries in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Chubut,
Córdoba, Neuquén, Río Negro, Santa Cruz and Santa Fe participated in the program The Reading
Challenge which reached more than 36,000 children and young people. The project included the
distribution of 9,140 new literature books. The Reading Challenge is a reading promotion program
developed by Fundación Leer to strengthen the bond between libraries and their community. It
helps children increase the number of books they read along the year. The program has two main
components: a “Mobile Reading Corner” which visits different institutions in each locality, and
a “Reading Album”, an attractive printed notebook where children record the books they read.

With the support of Banco Macro which also aided in
the implementation of this program Challenge:To Read,
eight institutions in the provinces of Misiones, Salta,

in those provinces.

Care To Read
Early literacy

Growing together
In 2011, with the support of Fundación Universal Assistance, the
program Growing together was implemented in Kindergarten Santa
Clara in the City of Buenos Aires. The project benefitted eighty eight
children, each one of whom received a book to take home.
The program intends to promote language development and literacy
in children up to five years of age. To do so, it trains the institution’s
personnel in charge of their care and education providing them with
strategies and concrete ideas to incentivize the contact between
children and books from their early years. The project also looks forward
to increase parents’ awareness on the importance of stimulating early
literacy in babies and younger children.
With the support of UPS Foundation and UPS Argentina the program Care To Read was implemented in five community centers of San Miguel,
Province of Buenos Aires. It included the creation of Reading Corners and the celebration of Book Events in which children could read with their
parents. 2,185 books were distributed. Families, children and personnel in charge of the centers enjoyed the preparation of corners and the Book
Events devoted to reading and related activities.
Getting Ready For School
Together with Vitol Argentina and Vitol Charitable Foundation,
the program Getting Ready For School was started in the Cultural
Center of Puerto Piray, province of Misiones. Presently, it is being
implemented at a Child Development Center for children two
to five years of age who do not have access to early childhood
formal education services. The program included the opening of a
Reading Corner with 220 new books and the distribution of 310
books for the children to keep. The program forms facilitators to
guide families and offer them concrete strategies to create learning
environments at home. In this way, the project supports vulnerable
children, with little access to educational and cultural services, to
reach elementary school with the necessary skills and enthusiasm
to learn and be successful at school. The project includes besides
training on teaching strategies to improve academic practices. The
project also provided training to primary school principals and
teachers so they were better prepared to support children’s reading
comprehension skills.
A Group of 9 teachers received accompaniment from Fundación
Leer with the aim to update their practices according to the
proposed principles.

Literacy Development
Community
literacy
With the sponsorship of Kids Helping Kids-Club Penguin, two
community centers in Resistencia, province of Chaco participated
in the program Local strengthening to support literacy promotion in
communities at risk. Fundación Leer worked together with the Villa
San Andrés and Villa Río Negro Centers to increase their capacity to
support children’s literacy development. In the understanding that
literacy is a key aspect in child development, the program’s goal is to
give reading a more important place in families’ daily life. The project
gives the possibility to have access to new books to those institutions
that have none of them. 198 children benefitted from this program
and a total of 818 new literature books were distributed for the
children to keep and for the creation of reading corners.

The aim of this program is to give reading an important place in families’ daily lives and
to give new literature books to institutions which do not have access to them. Reading
promotion and the creation of Reading Corners are two of the pillars on which the program
is based. Thanks to the support of Operación Canasta the program was implemented in
the Centro Villa Elisa of Resistencia, province of Chaco, benefitting 70 children. 300 books
were distributed for the creation of the reading corner.

New strategies of
distant training:
videoconferences
Courses in the virtual campus of
Fundación Leer.
In 2011 and for the third consecutive year we delivered two
training courses totally implemented in our virtual campus (http://
campus.leer.org).
Training
1. Courses for teachers and supervisors of elementary schools.
With the support of The Tinker Foundation Inc., Fundación Leer developed a course for elementary school teachers and directors, which help
teachers reflect about teaching instruction key components: the design and coordination of reading instances as well as reading promotion,
reading comprehension and critical thinking strategies to approach diversity in the classroom. This course, based on the document Guiding
criteria for good practices in the teaching of reading developed by Fundación Leer, help teachers reflect over self- evaluation. Along the course,
teachers have the opportunity to revise their own practices and exchange ideas with their collegues. Training was provided from April through
August by specialized tutors who guided the pedagogical work, generated group activities and coordinated exchange forums. Thirty nine teachers
and six school directors from the provinces of Buenos Aires, Chaco, Chubut, Córdoba, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Formosa, La Rioja, Jujuy, Neuquén,
Río Negro, Salta, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán, participated in the course.
In alliance with Aluar Aluminio Argentina S.A.I.C., and in the framework of the program Family of
Readers, two videoconferences about children’s literature and reading promotion in kindergarten
were carried out for101 teachers and principals of Puerto Madryn’s Child Development Center.
Participants could update their teaching strategies and increase their knowledge on children’s
literature. This virtual training allowed a rich and fluid interchange between trainers and
participants. The technology allowed the inclusion of varied resources like presentations in power
point and animated videos from Internet.

“Many of us discovered that reading is not considered in our institutions in this way, a
way so deeply thought, so complete, from a full awareness of what is it that should be
revalued about reading for the benefit of our children and teachers. It is good to realize
it and to be able to initiate a debate with our teams to elaborate a plan about reading to
improve the quality of our practices, to be able to multiply the effect and become selfreflective. I believe that after this experience, none of us will have the same approach.
A change has started within us. No doubt the change will not be immediate, but it has

2. Critical reading of narrative and expositive texts
From August to December, Fundación Leer delivered in its virtual campus, a course sponsored by the Open Society Institute. Its aim was to
help fourth, fifth and sixth grade teachers improve their practices to support their students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Participants had access to reading material, activities and the possibility to exchange practices with other teachers. A tutor from Fundación Leer
guided facilitated participants’ apprehension of theoretical contents. Teachers were offered theoretical material as well as teaching strategies based
on active and cooperative learning. 168 teachers from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, México and Perú took the course.
“This course gave me the opportunity to learn new ways to approach teaching. I learnt interesting techniques to promote reading. I put the techniques
into practice and children reacted in a positive way to them as well as some
colleagues that put them in practice in their own classrooms. I received valuable contributions from my colleagues in the course; I felt I had many things
in common with many of them. I could see they taught as I did. I think that
we all learnt a lot in this course. It is wonderful to realize that some people
love their job and tries to do it in the best possible way” Words of one of the

Fundación Leer prepared the second
edition of its publication “Guiding
criteria for the improvement of
reading instruction”
With the sponsorship of The Tinker Foundation, a new edition of
Guiding criteria for the improvement of Reading Instruction was
developed during 2011. The new edition has been enriched thanks
to the suggestions of teachers, librarians, school headmistresses as
well as school supervisors nationwide. The new book will be available
both in paper and in digital form in March 2012.
Scholarships for new teachers
In the year 2011, with the support of General Electric Foundation,
Fundación Leer invited teachers in their first three years of work, who
were interested in receiving training in the field of reading promotion
to apply for scholarships. Selected teachers would participate in
a four month on line course in Fundación Leer’s Virtual Campus.
Guided by a specialized tutor, they will explore children literature
as well as reading promotion strategies to support their student’s
learning. More than 700 teachers applied for the scholarship among
which 100 of them were selected to be part of the course. In this
way, Fundación Leer will be strengthening teachers at the beginning
of their careers, giving them a conceptual framework as well as
concrete tools to help children become autonomous readers.
FARO: a program to
foster reading promotion
Faro is a program launched by Fundación Hermanos Agustín y Enrique Rocca, who have associated
with Fundación Leer for its management and implementation. It started in 2011and will last three
years. Its aim is to improve the assistance given to schools in order to prepare their students more
efficiently, so that they can develop literacy skills and enjoy good quality literature texts. It is being
carried out in Campana and has three main lines of work: teacher training, improvements in school
libraries and fostering students to read. 3,000 students from ten elementary schools, seventy
teachers and ten principals will benefit from this program. In Campana, the plan of implementation
consists in four pillars of work: Teacher’s training, improvements in school libraries, stimulation of
students to read and revaluation of reading for pleasure. The recipients of this program are 3000
children of primary level of education from 10 schools located in Campana, 70 teachers from the
selected primary schools, 10 directors from these schools, 10 representatives from the respective
cooperatives and 9000 family members of the mentioned children of Campana.

Alliances
with authorities
Agreements and joint work with Public
Authorities
During 2011, Fundación Leer deepened its strategic alliances with public
authorities of several provinces.
The Government of the City of Buenos Aires invited Fundación
Leer to participate in the annual selection of books for its program
Reading Schools: books were chosen in November. Teachers and
children literature specialists read selected and recommended
books for kindergarten, elementary and secondary schools.
The Education, Science and Technology Ministry of the province
of Catamarca and Fundación Leer continued the work started in
the province in the year 2010. In this framework, the provincial
government promoted the second and third provincial marathons.
A training program for representatives of all the elementary schools
in the Department of Capayán was delivered. As part of it, the
pedagogical and technical team of the Ministry worked together
with Fundación Leer specialists to help school supervisors replicate
the training in different sites of the province, as for example, Ancasti,
Valle Viejo, Fray Mamerto Esquiú and the Capital City. When the
training was completed a sample of ten participating schools were
visited to evaluate the improvement.

Fundación Leer
During 2011, Fundación Leer signed a cooperation agreement
with the education authorities of the province of Salta to develop
a training program for school supervisors as well as for the
pedagogical and technical team of the Ministry. The authorities,
the professional team of Fundación Leer and the participants
evaluated positively this experience. It was agreed to continue the
program in 2012.
During 2011, jointly with educational authorities of Chubut and
Pan American Energy, Fundación Leer delivered workshops for 240
teachers on Reading Comprehension and Literature in Trelew and
Comodoro Rivadavia, respectively.

Reading in the web: a site with
resources for teachers.

Reading in the
web
The site Reading in the web – a virtual place focused in the teaching
of reading- was improved during 2011 with new resources and tools
for teachers. From the site teachers have access to different articles,
participate in forums coordinated by the Fundación specialists, publish
pedagogical experiences and obtain updated information about
seminars, conferences and other events.
Registration is free. The site has 5.000 registered active users, among
whom there are teachers, principals, education authorities and different
actors of the education community.

the students in the country with this possibility of

that this Marathon 2011 was a complete success: our
children fully answered, happily and creatively, to the
message of this event we librarians have anxiously

our children a book, a story, an anecdote, giving them
every productive experience that may inspire their

the 9th National Reading Marathon
On September 30 under the motto “Routes, roads and pathways made of paper and ink: a travel through books
in Argentina” the 9th. National Reading Marathon was carried out. The participation reached 3,535,844 children
and teenagers and 254,956 adults from 13,022 institutions in 2,434 different localities in the country.
On that day, the children –together with their teachers, families, volunteers and other members of the community- got together to spend hours reading and listening to stories, to participate in puppet theatres and plays
and be part of the most different reading activities.

The Marathon had the support of education authorities, ministries, municipalities, publishing houses, mass media, civil society organizations, teachers, parents, community center leaders, physicians, health center personnel,
enterprise manager and personnel, who constantly gave their support and collaboration. Besides, there was a

The provincial Reading Marathon
in
Catamarca
For the second consecutive year and jointly with the Education, Science and Technology Ministry
of the province of Catamarca, the 2nd. and 3rd. Provincial Reading Marathons were carried out
in the framework of a cooperation agreement for training of members of the pedagogical and
technical team of the ministry and supervisors of every level and subject.
The second Marathon had as its motto “Together towards a Reading Catamarca. Our country, our
province, our history”, whereas the third used “Together towards a reading Catamarca. Knowing
and enjoying our writers”. In them, provincial schools and institutions carried out reading activities
with the participation of all the community.

The Ministry authorities as well as the supervisors of
different levels spread the word about both marathons
and collaborated registering the institutions without
internet connection. It is worth mentioning the
participation of Catamarca writers, the development
of reading cafés, puppet shows, art workshops and
discussion panels about books. The Minister of
Education, Mr. Mario Perna, together with his colleagues
and a representative from Fundación Leer visited some
of the participating institutions.
Within the framework of these marathons, Fundación
Leer made a raffle of 200 books to create a Reading
Corner.

For the second year, Fundación Leer had permanent spaces in the international websites of Global
Giving and HelpArgentina, which are used by individual donors all around the world to support
solidary projects. Thanks to the donations received, a children library with 200 specially selected
books was created and training was delivered to the School 608 “Héroes de las Malvinas”, in
Quitilipi, province of Chaco.

Argentina”
Fundación Leer and Nueva Magazine organized a contest for teachers
of kindergarten and elementary schools. An award was given to
participants who implemented creative classroom projects to foster
reading in students and their families. Teachers from all the country
sent their stories about experiences in the classroom. There were
four winners. Teachers who won the first prize received a netbook
for themselves and a Reading Corner for their school. The second
prize was 150 books for a Reading Corner at each of the winning
institutions.
It was an exclusive promotion for Supermercados La Anónima and
El Quijote. When buying different products by Johnson &Johnson
people entered into a raffle and the winners decided which schools
will be benefitted with two libraries equipped each one with 200 new
literary books for children and teenagers.

Fundación Leer and ADEPA (Argentine
Newspaper Association): “Little
journalists in action”
In this contest organized by ADEPA and Fundación Leer, teachers help
students read the newspaper. After reading newspapers during three
weeks, each participant chose one person related to the news in the
different sections and prepared the questions for one interview.
The jury evaluated children’s interviews and selected those interviews
noteworthy for its relevance and creativity of the questions and the
excellence of the writing.
The winning students had their articles published in national and regional
newspapers. They received 20 new literature books to take home and a
digital camera. Their teachers receive a portable PC and their schools,
100 new literary books for children and young people.

and Santillana Publishing House:
“Journalists for a day”
This contest was aimed at children between 9 and 12 years of age
in all the country. To enter, the children sent short audio or text
messages, summing up in ten seconds what reading means to them
and its importance. The prizes were, for each one of the five winners,
20 new books to take home from Santillana Publishing House. Their
schools libraries received 110 new literary books for children and
teenagers.

Fundación La Nación: Award to the Education
Community.
This competition organized by the abovementioned Fundación had the support of Fundación
Leer and other organizations, with the objective to highlight those initiatives in schools of all
of Argentina geared to improve quality of education provided to students socioeconomically
vulnerable. It emphasized the efforts of committed teaching teams working creatively and
collectively to improve student comprehension in exact and natural sciences, social sciences,
language and literature. The winners were: School No. 430, San Martín, Colonia Dolores, province
of Santa Fe with its project OON OOEN SISHITAQ (We also can), the school of the Agricultural
Family, Colonia Alpina, Santiago del Estero, with “Trees for my community”, the technical school
No. 3 María Sánchez de Thompson, city of Buenos Aires with “ Reaping biogas from bacteria”.

Fundación Leer promoted a meeting on training, interchange and reflection to consider proposals
about teaching of reading in schools. It proposed
to each of the institutions a day to interchange
experiences with their teachers, in a training focused
in the recovery of speech skills, reading aloud
and reading comprehension, in order to learn the
curriculum contents and obtain knowledge.
It was, no doubt, a very enriching and widely accepted
meeting for all the participants who were motivated
and interested to update their knowledge and improve
teaching practices.

Children’s day in Bunge Argentina
next to Fundación Leer
On children’ s day and taking as a motto “The child, the book and
the family”, Bunge enterprise asked Fundación Leer to develop a
complete program for its employees. It consisted of the presentation
of a backpack with books and games selected by its specialists to
incentivize reading in the family. The main objective was to promote
reading at home, a highly valuable experience.

A celebration of Children’s Day
full of books!
Fundación Leer together with Acer Brag S. A. celebrated the
Children’s Day. Fundación Leer took part in the award of a
gift that the company gave to the children of its employees.
The proposal included the delivery of 569 books for children
of different ages. Each book has a label of the company and is
handed over in personalized handbags.

African Cats: Avant premiere
The Walt Disney Company gave the avant premiere of its movie
“African Cats” in benefit of the Fundación. The performances
were at the Unicenter Hoyts movie theatre, and were very well
received by the public.

With the support and collaboration of Editorial Albatros, Fundación
Leer attended the 37th. International Book Fair. As it does every
year, the Fundación made its programs known to all the visitors.
This was a new opportunity to spread the word about its projects
and make more people to join in the objective of reaching a literate
and reading Argentina.

VIII Book Fair in Bragado

Children’s Day at Nucha
In the month of July, at the request of AcerBrag company, the
Fundación offered two training workshops during Bragado
Book Fair, one for parents and another for teachers. One of
the specialists of the Fundación presented a paper in a special
space for thought, professional updating and evaluation on the
importance of the role the parents play in establishing a reading
habit in children.
From September 30 to October 2, at the Rural in Palermo, more
than 150 not for profits organizations from all the country showed
the work they carry out, so to make aware and motivate an active
participation of the society in fields related to the social commitment
of the citizens. The Fundación was invited to participate and so
it did with a stand in which volunteers presented the activities
and programs it has been developing for the last 14 years. All the
organizations invited were carefully selected by an Honor Council.
To celebrate this day, Fundación Leer organized a “Story telling
afternoon”, at Nucha Café in Palermo Soho. There, children
discovered a magical world through stories and fantasy
characters. This event had the support of Sigmar Publishing Hous
and Sancor Products. The narrator was Marina Vázquez. All the
money collected went to the Fundación educational projects.

Little Festival
In the month of November, Fundación Leer attended Little Festival,
a weekend devoted to music, workshops, open air games and shows
for all the family in the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. On behalf
of the Fundación, a specialized narrator told stories to children 4
to 7 years old, who were able to enjoy fantastical characters and
incredible stories.

Fundación Leer
Fundación Leer, an organization associated to Reading and Writing
for Critical Thinking International Consortium, was invited to
participate in the International Conference of the CREMOLE
(Create-Motivate-Learn) project, held in November at Cluj-Napoca
(Rumania). Two members of the team attended the meeting.
During six days, teachers and leaders of NGOs from more than
30 countries in America, Europe, Africa and Asia shared talks and
workshops examining strategies to motivate adults to participate
in training sessions. The members of the team participated in the
Annual Meeting of Critical Thinking International Consortium, a
net of organizations working to promote critical thinking among
children and young people.
For he second year in a row, thanks to the support of Dietrich,
and from the magazine Mujeres al volante we keep on making
recommendations and making notes about the different special
days in the year (winter vacation, mother month, etc.) for story
telling shared with children and family at home.

When school classes began, Staples gave its support to Fundación
Leer to develop actions oriented to incentivize children literacy,
earmarking part of its proceeds to the Fundación.

“ I saw an ad in a magazine and I thought that the work of the Fundación was interesting and besides I had always been attracted by the idea of being a volunteer. I
think that the contribution of young people, in one way or other, to the promotion
of reading is a very important and satisfactory task. From then I started helping with
different things in the Fundación, in the National Reading Marathon, the Reading
Corners and even to go to some bookshop to read stories. There is nothing more
magical than seeing the children enjoy and get moved
by literary works and its characters. It makes me really
proud that young people come to give a helpful hand to a
foundation that works in favor of education, literacy and

Fifteen volunteers form CITI Argentina made possible, once more, that
a school in Florencio Varela, in the greater Buenos Aires could have a
Reading Corner with 300 new books of literature for children. During a
special day, the Corner was built up and other repair work was carried
out.
With the support of Cencosud, a group of 21 corporate volunteers
participated in the creation of a Reading Corner with 300 new
books in school No.4 “Domingo Faustino Sarmiento”, Vicente López,
province of Buenos Aires. Training was also provided by specialists of
the Fundación to its teachers.
With the cooperation of 16 volunteers from General Electric Argentina
and in the framework of Reading Buddies, a day was devoted to reading
aloud to children. This day was celebrated in three schools of the cities
of Buenos Aires and Pilar. One hundred forty five new books were
distributed.
Thanks to the work of 120 volunteers from Direct TV, eight institutions
in the greater Buenos Aires were benefitted with the program Amigos
Cuenta Cuentos. During its development, volunteers shared story
reading with students from first, second, and third grade of the
morning and afternoon shifts.
More than 25 volunteers from Duke Energy Argentina went to
Kindergarten No. 916 “Dra. Cecilia Grierson” in Carapachay to read
aloud stories to children. The institution received 125 literature books
for children.
Corporate volunteers form HSBC Argentina, in the framework of the
program Reading is fundamental Argentina, participated in three
reading meetings in each of seven institutions in the provinces of
Chaco, Mendoza, Salta, Santa Fe, greater Buenos Aires and the city
of Buenos Aires. Six hundred seventy two new literature books for
children and young people were distributed among the different
centers.
As a celebration of children´s day, corporate volunteers from Total
Especialidades Argentina S.A. visited five schools in the greater
Buenos Aires and in the provinces of Chaco, Córdoba, Santiago
del Estero and Santa Fe. Stories were read and 524 books were
distributed for the libraries of the different schools.
In relation with the program Prepared for Life, a group of volunteers
from Monsanto Argentina visited six schools in Pergamino and
Zárate to share reading stories aloud. In this way, they gave children
the opportunity to share a different day. They were benefited with
100 new books of children and teenagers literature.

Thanks to the support of 15 volunteers from American Express Argentina S.A., it was possible to
create a Reading Corner with 300 books in Kindergarten No.3 General San Martín in the province
of Buenos Aires. It was then opened, followed and evaluated.
Fundación Loma Negra actively participated in the program Reading Buddies. Volunteers made six
visits to Escuela No. 1, D.E. 04 “Alte. Brown” to read a story each time. They visited every grade in
elementary school, from first to seventh grade. The book read was given as a gift to the school and
also books were presented to 122 beneficiary children. Thus, a total of 163 new books reached the
school by means of this program.
kindergarten also received a total of 100 new books for children.
The corporate volunteers of the newspaper La Nación took part in the recording of children
books during a whole day. Afterwards, the recordings were distributed among different
institutions for the children to enjoy them.
On June 8th. within the celebration of the Solidarity Day, Santander Río celebrated a reading day
shared among 100 employees of different branches and the children attending the schools No.10
Julio Argentino Roca and No. 13 República de Chile. Besides, 100 books were distributed to those
school libraries.
Under the reading promotion program Reading Buddies
and with the collaboration of more than 20 volunteers
of Banco Macro a reading day was celebrated in
children’s day at the South-West Integrating Center in
the city of Rosario, province of Santa Fe. Books were
read and plastic activities were carried out. And a total
of 76 new literary books for children were distributed.

The resources
Perspectives
and their application
During the year ended December 31, 2011, thanks to the contributions received from private enterprises, institutions,
foundations and people, nationally and internationally, all driven by a strong commitment to education and the future
of the youngest living in all of the República Argentina, it was possible to put in the hands of 125,480 children the
amount of 93,468 new books of children literature and to give training to 1,739 teachers. Besides, in the 9th National
Reading Marathon participated 3,800,000 children, young people and adults from all around the country.
In 2012 we celebrate 15 years of uninterrupted work in our country, and we have presently an important number of projects to which
we endeavor as we are doing from the first day, and with the same conviction we will use our efforts and experience to achieve a better
promotion of reading among the children in our country.
In this same line, we will keep on reinforcing training for teachers and other mediators who act as promoters of reading, offering them
training and new resources so they could have better and wider selection of tools to bring children near the books. We will do our best to
achieve that an ever increasing number of children have access to books at school and other community spaces and also at home.
We will reinforce distance training and the projects in the pipeline because in this way we can reach the farthest points in the country,
favoring those teachers who are not able to receive training in person.
As we are well aware of the impact that new technologies have in education, and their reach they already have in the Argentine education
system, we will work in a new project that uses this mean to bring children nearer critical thinking.

use of the criteria of good practices for the teaching of reading, developed by Fundación Leer.
