Late season construction, maintaining homeowner access for residents and access to a city park all combined to present a unique
challenge. Florence Cement was ready for the challenge and
constructed the new road while providing the community with a
new sledding hill all within the project limits.
The construction of Stephens Road between N.B. Kelly to 1-94 in
the City of Eastpointe was completed in two phases starting with the
north half or westbound lanes. Florence used a GOMACO 2600 to
pave the mainline pavement. Side street approach work occurred
prior to mainline curb, with approval to access approaches through
back side streets. The second phase was completed at the very end
of the 2014 construction season.
When the weather got tough Florence Cement utilized cold weather
protection to keep the project moving forward and completed the
paving work in a timely manner. Some restoration and sealing work
were completed in the spring. Traffic was maintained for the residents throughout the project. The City was particularly concerned
about maintaining access to Spindler Park on the east side of the
project, and Florence was able to accommodate this request. Florence Cement was able to complete the project timely and accommodate special requests resulting in a new, long lasting concrete
pavement and enhanced family fun options for the residents of
Eastpointe.
