Several performers will take the stage including St.

Doll-Making Workshop with Susan Clinard
In conjunction with the exhibition Doll-Like at the
John Slade Ely House, the Arts Council of Greater
New Haven presents:
A doll-making workshop with sculptor Susan
Clinard
Sunday, June 8th at 3pm.
At the John Slade Ely House, 51 Trumbull Street,
New Haven
Free and open to the public.
The exhibition, curated by Debbie Hesse and Paul
Clabby features artwork by T. Foley, Cara
DeAngelis, Joesph Saccio, Margaret Roleke, Susan
Clinard, Tine Kindermann, Kimberly Mikenis, Lani
Asuncion, Silas Finch, Laura Marsh and Mary Giehl.
The featured artists will show videos, paintings and
sculptures based on the idea of dolls which Hesse
says, “will expand your thinking about dolls.”
Also: The Doll Collection Room Featuring Unique, Handmade Dolls by LS Auth, Carole
Dubiell, Elizabeth Flournoy, Carolyn Jenkins, Najah Josie, Nancy MacBride, Fethi
Meghelli, Elaine Peters, Ruth Sack, Rashmi Talpade and more!
The inspiration for Doll-Like came over 10 years ago when Debbie Hesse travelled
through South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. “Dolls are concrete representations of our
humanness” Hesse said in article for the June Arts Paper, “They are universal icons which
offer social, political, historical context to explore issues about personal and cultural
identity, gender roles, play, heritage, magic, ritual, childhood, and memory.” To expand on
this idea the public is invited to participate by dropping off their favorite cherished,
handmade or collected dolls during gallery hours through July 2nd.

the day of her birthday two years ago, he has retired from teaching and instead he spends
his time brooding at their island beach house, trying to connect with Gillian's spirit. His
love for her and his inability to cope with her loss blinds him to the increasing strain on his
relationship with his daughter, and her need for his love and guidance. As Labor Day
approaches, David's sister-in-law Esther and her husband Paul come to visit, bringing with
them a woman named Kevin as a blind date for David. Tensions rise as the family tries to
finally deal with their grief and find a way to move on.

New Haven 06510
Class Description:
Each of us has experienced heightened states of being through contact improvisation—
times when we felt fearless and alive. There are no recipes to create these moments, but
training can lay the foundation for physical and emotional breakthroughs. In this workshop
we are specifically interested in developing our reflexes, our coordination, and the
capacity to continually recycle our mental, emotional and physical energies back into the
dancing. At the core is our commitment to staying with the modulation of tone and weight
in the body—so that the touch remains alive and sensitive. We are also committed to the
creation of a workshop container that is both playful and focused.
The practice of contact improvisation includes the ability to move with ease and efficiency,
the integration of the head, spine and limbs, and the ability to motivate movement from
multiple centers within the body. Students in the workshop will learn specific technical
skills, somatic techniques, and principles of awareness and improvisation.
Contact improvisation is a dance form which involves the practice of improvising while
maintaining some form of physical contact. This can include weight sharing, balancing,
and counterbalancing. The form allows partners to experiment with supporting one
another while falling, flying and tumbling. The emphasis is on personal and physical safety
through bio-mechanically sound techniques and through the practice of physical and
psychological boundaries. We have many years of experience teaching the form and have
worked regularly with its founders.
Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser, master practitioners of contact improvisation and
professors at Smith College, have been making work together for over 10 years. They are
know both for their highly physical skills as dancers and their ability to access the poetics
of contemporary dance performance.

Kehler Liddell Gallery presents Fragments: Tragedy and Hope, two member artist shows
featuring painter/collagist/sculptor Fethi Meghelli and sculptor Joseph Saccio, from
Thursday, May 29 - Sunday, June 29.
At the intersection of tragedy and hope there exists a kind of magic realism that compels
these two artists to find laughter among the tears, joy amidst the suffering, and beauty in
the contradictions. A variety of media are presented in these distinct shows that narrate
the journeys of two artists in fragments of memories, stories, and dreams.
For FRAGMENTS, North Haven artist Joe Saccio is inspired by his extensive collection of
natural and synthetic materials. Observation of the natural world and modifications of
biologic forms drive his work. Working primarily with wood and found objects, his
sculptures come together in a primitive, raw manner that expresses his impressions of
myth and ritual, loss and birth. “For me this is analogous to the literary tradition of magic
realism,” he explains. “There is humor in some of the sculptures, as the fragments of
materials and forms are brought together to express the polarities and contradictions of
tragedy and hope in our perilous world.”
New Haven artist Fethi Meghelli presents a selection of works from different periods of
time that demonstrates the transitions in his artistic life. “This is the work of the artist,” he
explains. “What you see in this collection shows a natural progression of a life’s work.” For
Meghelli, that includes a variety of media—paint, collage, prints, sculpture, installation—
and the imagination to explore the imagery and themes that drive him: “all of the magic
and stories, all the laughs and tears, all the sorrows of poverty and war, the music and
beauty, the memories and dreams.”
Saccio and Meghelli are two of 25 member artists at the Kehler Liddel Gallery. Founded in
2003, the Gallery has grown to represent some of Connecticut's highest achieving midcareer and emerging artists in a full range of media, from painting, printmaking and works
on paper, to photography and sculpture.

"Value Systems" at the New Haven Museum
Laura Watt, Sound System Study 4
New Haven has always been known for inspired collaborations. On Thursday, June 12,
2014, from 5 to 8 p.m., the trend continues as the New Haven Museum opens “Value
Systems,” a thought-provoking new exhibition in partnership with Artspace New Haven.
The exhibition will run through November 2, 2014.
“Value Systems” curator and New Haven Museum Director of Photo Archives Jason
Bischoff-Wurstle makes intriguing connections between several of the museum’s archival
images and manuscripts and contemporary works by a dozen Artspace artist members.
Inspired by New Haven’s infrastructure and events that shaped the community, BischoffWurstle explored the Artspace “Flatfile” collection of contemporary art and the New Haven
Museum’s archives in an effort to create links that collectively inform the city’s civic
consciousness.
In one such connection, Bischoff-Wurstle pairs the museum’s images of an 1890’s
telephone directory (the first in the world) and a drawing of the first commercial telephone
switchboard (also a New Haven first) with a work entitled “Sound Systems,” created in
2013 by artist Laura Watt.
“Value Systems” features the work of 12 artists: Aspasia Patti Anos, Louise Barry, Gary
Duehr, Julian Gilbert-Davis, Andrew Hogan, Janne Höltermann, Keith Johnson, Aurora
Pellizzi, Amy Pryor, Kirsten Rae Simonsen, Paul Theriault, and Laura Watt.
This is the first time works from the Artspace Flatfile collection have been shown in a
museum context, and is one of the first projects for expanding the Flatfile’s presence in
the community through extra-gallery programming. The Flatfile is Artspace New Haven's
changing collection of works on paper by over 200 artists. It is accessed by collectors,
curators and the public in their galleries, and forms the basis of an active roster of
exhibitions throughout the year. This exhibition also marks the debut of FOLD, a speciallycommissioned portable exhibition kiosk designed to showcase works from the Flatfile
when they travel from the Artspace gallery.
As part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, Bischoff-Wurstle and Artspace
Education Curator Martha Lewis will lead a special curatorial tour of the “Value
Systems” exhibition on June 17 at 1:30 p.m.
