Why are the heritage chicks sold as mixed sex? The genetics lines of these birds dates back to as far as 1918 and hasn't changed since
then. In modern chickens, they have selected for a trait in females for faster growing feathers so you can tell if a day-old chick is male or
female by looking at the lengh of the wing feathers. The heritage chickens do not have this trait so it is impossible to tell if they are male
or females until they reach sexual maturity. The good news is that, as our grandparents did in the past, roosters make for good eating or
can be sold to other poultry owners for breeding stock.
Last year, Peavey Mart joined the efforts to save this rare collection of heritage chickens and sold the heritage chicks through their stores.
During 2016 Chick Days, Peavey Mart’s partners, Kane Veterinary Supplies and Vetoquinol, will offer deals on poultry supplies
