WELCOME TO THE SAUSALITO LOCALS’ GUIDE
WELCOME TO THE LOCALS’ GUIDE TO SAUSALITO
Not only will you find a comprehensive listing of retail businesses and services but
you can use this as your personal guide about town – all brought to you by the
Sausalito Chamber of Commerce. Why leave town, drive that car and pay for gas,
when almost everything you need is here in town? Support your local economy –
it supports you!
With this directory you are about to embark on a guided tour of Sausalito, a
journey through our waterfront community. You’ll find that this reference book is a
tremendous resource.
> How can I volunteer to help support and promote our great community?
> What is there to do in Sausalito to entertain out of town guests?
> What number do I call if my power goes out?
> What time does the ferry leave?
We strive to keep the Guide fresh and interesting, so this year we have
updated and added new information on topics such as:
> Special Events and Weddings – Sausalito is the perfect location for hosting your next special event!
> Why it is important that we as local residents support our local businesses!
> Green Waste and Recycling “How-To’s” for residents and businesses
> Highlight on Lycée Français School
We hope you find this Guide useful and informative and we encourage you to keep
it by the phone, in your car or purse – before you drive out of town, see if you really
need to do so.
With this Guide you have all the essential data you need to Think Local. Buy
Local. Stay Local. If there is something you CAN’T find in the following pages,
or if you want to get additional copies, we encourage you to visit the Chamber
of Commerce website at www.sausalito.org or call us at 415-331-7262.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEEDS COMMUNITY SUPPORT
A STRONG LOCAL BUSINESS
ECONOMY BENEFITS RESIDENTS
There is a reason we say: Think Local, Buy Local, Stay
Local. For every $100 spent locally, $68 goes back to the
community. Our local businesses – the hotels, restaurants
and retail shops as well as the service industries and B2B
businesses in town (accountants, attorneys, ad agencies,
etc.) generate more than 50% of the City’s operational
budget. In other words, without a strong, sustainable economy, our City
would struggle – the programs and services the city provides would be at
risk, whether it’s parks, public safety, the library, or operational infrastructure
such as street repair and waterfront maintenance.
There is plenty of data to prove that a strong, sustainable local economy
enhances the residential quality of life in a City. So support your local
businesses! Did you know:
>There are 30+ fine dining establishments walking distance from the
center of town; 5 new restaurants have opened in the past year alone.
>There are 9 early morning coffee cafes to choose from in town – all
loaded with character and characters (as well as espresso!)
>Whether you are looking for menswear, women’s or children’s clothing,
jewelry, toys, fine art, or household items, there are over 50 small,
independently-owned shops & galleries offering personalized service.
>You’ll never be left in the lurch looking for gifts no matter what the
holiday or special event. Beautiful, unique gifts from around the world
can be found in our wonderful boutiques.
>Need flowers, food, fine wine and deli delights? Sausalito has it all.
In other words, why leave town? Downtown parking is not a big issue–every
resident gets three FREE hours of parking in the downtown lots and there is
ample street parking in other business neighborhoods. We pride ourselves
on being a “no-chain-store, no- big-box-store” town ... but the charming
boutiques and small businesses need our support to survive.
Also don’t forget or underestimate the value of our out of town visitors –
the hospitality and tourism industries are critical to the health of our local
economy. Be nice to our visitors; they are ambassadors for us throughout the
world and they fuel our local economy with an estimated $82 million a year.
8
SAUSALITO CHAMBER | 415-331-7262 | SAUSALITO.ORG
LOCAL BUSINESS NEEDS COMMUNITY SUPPORT
In addition to supporting our retail merchants,
service providers, and the hospitality sectors
in town, the Chamber works closely with
civic leaders to ensure a diversified mix of
other businesses in Sausalito that are lowimpact and environmentally conscientious,
always striving to preserve our small-town,
marine-oriented character. Empty storefronts,
poorly-utilized space and blighted areas do
nothing for our economy or the complexion
of our town. Every business has what is
called a “multiplier effect”. If a new graphic
design agency generates $1M in revenue, it
is calculated that this growth will generate 14
new jobs, $510k in business revenue at other
local businesses and $240k in businessrelated tax revenues. The “visitors” who work
here on a daily basis are also an important
part of our economy–they, too, stay, shop and
dine locally. Clearly it behooves us to be a
“business-friendly” community.
To learn more about what your Chamber does
to support economic development, access
a copy of the 2011 & 2013 “Economic
& Community Development Report”
prepared by the Marin Economic Forum
report from the City or Chamber websites.
You may also access the “Business StartUp Guide” on either website, as well as
information and meeting minutes from the
City’s Business Advisory Committee
(BAC) on which Chamber, business and
community representatives serve. The BAC is
tasked with ensuring a sustainable economic
future in Sausalito; meetings are usually held
the third Thursday of every month and are
open to the public.

GREEN WASTE, RECYCLING & TRASH GUIDELINES
Bay Cities Refuse Service and the Sausalito Sustainability Commission
are pleased to announce the Green Waste and Recycling “How-To’s”
for Residents and Businesses.
Sausalito has joined the rest of Marin County in having a food scrap recycling program
included in your weekly collection service. This means green waste/compostables
are now picked up on a weekly basis, same as your regular garbage and recycling
service.
The GREEN cart is to be used for your household “green waste” and compostable
food scraps. See below for guidelines on what is compostable and what is garbage.
We encourage you to utilize the cart weekly on your regular collection day.
The BLUE cart is to be used for your “commingled” recycling. All glass, aluminum,
tin, newspaper, junk mail, magazines, etc. is to be placed in this cart and placed at the
curb every week. No need to separate, place it all in the cart.
If you are a business owner or multi-family dwelling that would like to set up your
green waste and recycling program or would like to explore how these services work
best for you, please contact Bay Cities Refuse at 332-3646.
Be sure to keep this guide handy for future reference!

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHT
LYCÉE FRANÇAIS DE SAN FRANCISCO
Lycée Français de San Francisco is the only exclusively
French immersion school in the Bay Area. We offer a unique
opportunity for young children to learn about and share cultural
and linguistic perspectives; to grow as curious, motivated
learners; to become fluent French speakers and scholars; to
thrive as tomorrow’s global citizens. Our program is based on the prestigious
French national curriculum and is enriched by core college-preparatory courses
taught in English. These dual credentials allow our students to distinguish
themselves from their peers as they apply for admission to the finest colleges and
universities in the world. Our new campus in Sausalito welcomes students in PreSchool – Grade 5, as does our San Francisco Lower School campus, while our
San Francisco Upper School campus welcomes students Grades 6 – 12.
Founded in 1967, we currently have more than 1,000 students enrolled on three
campuses. Our school is accredited by the Western Association of Independent
Schools (WASC), the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), and
the French Ministry of Education. We are members of the National Association of
Independent Schools (NAIS).
In the fall of 2013, LFSF moved its Marin Lower School campus to Sausalito,
adjacent to MLK Park. The campus opened with 240 students attending classes
from Pre-school through Grade 5.
LFSF is proud to be one of
your Sausalito neighbors and a
member of the Sausalito Chamber
of Commerce. One our current
fundraising projects is a campaign
to construct a playground which
will be open to the Sausalito
public during after-school hours.

SCHOOLS
SAUSALITO/MARIN CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT (SMCSD):
The District is composed of three schools: Bayside Elementary (K-5); Martin
Luther King Jr. Academy (middle school, Grades 6,7,8); and Willow Creek
Academy (K-8). For all schools, small classes are the rule rather than the
exception.
Bayside Elementary/MLK Jr. Academy is located on a sunny 11-acre
site in Marin City. Our Sausalito Marin City School District welcomes Bayside
Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, where parents are partners. The new public
K-8 school located at 200 Phillips Drive in Marin City serves as the roots to
support a community-based school model to promote student success through
the development of deep connections within our community in order to serve
as a model for schools beyond our district.
Willow Creek Academy (WCA), a public charter
school, was founded by a group of dedicated parents
and community members, and opened its doors in
September, 2001. Starting with 37 students, Willow
Creek has grown to a population of 350 students
in grades K-8 representing over three quarters of
the Sausalito Marin City School District’s overall
enrollment. Willow Creek was ranked #6 out of all
809 public charter schools in the state! In 2010, WCA
received a California Distinguished School Award from
the California State Board of Education. The school
is proud to have a very active Board of Directors
and a dedicated Parents Council. WCA offers an
engaging, project-based, student-centered approach
to education that deeply values input from our parents. Enrollment at Willow
Creek is open to all, with preference given to students living in the District.
