An Eastern Shore native
was tapped to provide the keynote speech at Northampton
County Community Unity Day
events Monday in Eastville,
commemorating Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr..
Toriano A. Giddens was
raised in Weirwood and educated in Northampton County Public Schools. Former
Northampton County School
Superintendent Dr. Dawn
Goldstine introduced Giddens,
citing his unwavering dedication to education, first as a
student and later as a teacher
and administrator.
Following college, Giddens
returned to Northampton County to teach at the TECH Center,
the school system’s alternative
education site. Giddens soon
found himself a coach and administrator at his alma mater,
Northampton High School.
After earning his master’s
degree, Giddens accepted a
position as an administrator
in Dover, Del., where he now
serves as principal of William
Harrison Middle School.
Addressing those gathered
for the Community Unity
Day events, Giddens urged
everyone to think of an unfulfilled dream and reminded
them that each individual is
responsible for making his or
her dream a reality. “Don’t let
your dream be deferred,” he
said. “Once you let a dream go,
it will be hard to get it back.
Work for your dream to become
a reality. Expect to be better
than you are, greater than you
Giddens
are. Take on obstacles and be
willing to take on challenges.”
In closing, Giddens reminded all to stay the course. “Overcome your challenges and press
ahead to make your dream a
reality,” he said. “Your dream
may be the one that puts your
name in the history books.”
Northampton County Board
of Supervisors Vice Chairman
Oliver Bennett noted that he
was humbled to speak to the
gathering. Bennett, a lifelong
educator for Northampton
County, spoke of the need to offer education to everyone. He
added that every parent is responsible for seeing that their
children take advantage of the
opportunity.
Bennett closed by noting his
desire to attract businesses to
the county as a way to provide
job opportunities.
Following the Unity Breakfast, many of those in attendance marched from the
high school to the Courthouse
Green where they concluded
the day’s events with songs
and prayers.

Church Fire Not Arson;
Two Other Blazes Are
Story and photo by Linda Cicoira
Investigators have determined that
a fire that destroyed Adams United
Methodist Church on Lee Mont Road
in Whitesville Wednesday morning was
not set intentionally.
Two other fires that occurred Sunday were added to the list of about 40
arsons reported in Accomack County
since November, according to a State
Police report.
“We almost immediately went into
a defensive mode,” Jimmy Rowley,
public information officer with Parksley Volunteer Fire Company, said of
the church fire. That means the fire
was fought from the outside because
“it was not safe to be on the inside,” he
explained. It took about two hours to
control the inferno.
Rowley said the “biggest drawback”
was that the fire was below the steeple.
“Above our head was a 1,000-pound
bell” and the floor under it was burning. It eventually fell, along with the
roof, destroying the sanctuary. The
stained-glass windows were blown
out. The social hall has smoke and water damage, he added.
In addition, frigid temperatures
worked against the approximately
55 firefighters who responded. Turn-
out gear — including coats, gloves
and boots — was freezing from water
spray from fire hoses. “It was so cold,”
said Rowley. “One firefighter slipped
on the ice but was not injured.”
Volunteer firefighters from Parksley, Bloxom, Atlantic, Onley, Onanock
and Tasley and Accomack Department of Public Safety responded to
the call that came in at around 8:45
a.m. Parksley and Bloxom units also
brought ambulances to the scene as
a precaution. Their firefighters were
on the scene from about 8:50 a.m. to
1:30 p.m.
Rev. Carl Perez, the church pastor, stood in the snow near the ruins
Thursday morning, expressing sorrow
for his flock of nearly 50. The historic
building was initially Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church South. It later
served as a school, was dismantled
and housed Hopkins’ store. It became
Adams U.M. Church in 1928.
On the bright side, the building
was insured, the church bell and two
stained-glass windows will be salvaged and services can be held at
sister church, Metropolitan United
Methodist Church at Bayside.
State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya
said arson investigators from the

Chesapeake Field Office responded to
the church fire.
The investigators also probed a
structure fire on Nelsonia Road in Nelsonia on Jan. 20. The property was listed as residential. The wall of a storage
shed was damaged in the blaze.
“Preliminary investigation believes
that this fire is related to the ongoing
series of structure fires in Accomack
County,” said Anaya.
Investigators also were called to “a
brush and tire fire” on Coastal Bou-
levard in Onley, she added. That fire,
near F&G Automotive, has been listed
as arson.
The incidents broke a four-week
hiatus from suspicious fires since a
Christmas Eve blaze at a barn on Nelsonia Road.
A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to the
arrest of the arsonist(s). Call the state
police toll-free at 1-800-582-8350 or

our first
full week of General
Assembly
work on Friday,
Jan. 18. It was a
hectic first week
during a short
General Assembly Session.
I was very pleased to have visitors
from Eastern Shore Community College. It is always great to hear their
stories of making use of this great resource in our community. We are looking forward to many more visitors before the General Assembly adjourns on
Feb. 23.
It has been Seafood Week at the
General Assembly, highlighting various seafood products, and commemorating Virginia Waterman’s Day.
Approximately seven of my bills already have worked their way through
sub-committee, committee or the full
House. We ended up introducing 13
pieces of legislation. As is typical, a
couple of potential bills had to be put
off at the end and were not ready to be
considered by the Assembly this session. A bill which I have sponsored to
eventually help facilitate and promote
the construction of natural gas infrastructure on Virginia’s Eastern Shore
has passed the full House and will be
considered by the Senate. In addition,
my bill requiring the exchange of in-
W
formation between the Department of
Corrections and the Virginia Department of Social Services to coordinate
and verify the eligibility of inmates
for Social Services Benefits passed
the full House unanimously. My bill
allowing retired police officers to work
as security guards for school systems
without negatively impacting Virginia
Retirement is waiting to be heard. In
addition, we hopefully will have golf
carts soon for Wachapreague.
Next week, the pace at the Assembly
will increase as we work to complete
our work on all House bills by Feb. 5,
“Crossover,” which is the date by which
each House must complete work on
the bills filed by its members. I serve
on four committees, three of which —
Finance, Commerce and Labor, and
Agriculture — have heavy dockets. In
addition, I am on six subcommittees of
those full committees as well, so the
days leading to Crossover are the most
hectic of the entire session. Failure of
a bill to be dealt with by Crossover
means it is dead.
Please feel free to contact me on any
of the issues which concern you. Bills
and legislative activity can be monitored on the Virginia General Assembly
website at www.virginiaassembly.gov
Please take time to fill out my Legislative Survey. If you do not receive one

Accomack Schools Asking for More Money
By Linda Cicoira
Nearly $500,000 will be needed to
balance the $43 million fiscal 2013-14
budget proposed by Accomack Schools’
Superintendent Dr. Bruce Benson, according to a letter posted on the division’s website. A public hearing on the
plan will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
at Arcadia High School.
“Our staff is the most significant factor in our success,” Benson said. “This …
request places particular emphasis on
funding support for … recruiting, developing, and retaining high-quality teachers, administrators and support staff.”
Though Gov. Bob McDonnell has asked
the General Assembly to fund the state’s
share of a 2-percent raise for teachers, as
well as incentives for some others, Benson says the governor’s proposal pertains
only to Standards of Quality (SOQ) instructional positions and requires a local
match. It does not include raises for other
school employees. In order for all workers
to get the hike, Benson said $630,707 is
needed. About $350,280 in local money
would be needed to keep the school operating plan intact.
The superintendent contends the salary increases would “not begin to address inequities within our compensation
model.” Accomack schools were compared
to those in Botetourt, Caroline, Isle of
Wight, King George, Orange, Powhatan,
Shenandoah and Warren counties.
“An analysis of teacher compensation
at various years of experience across
these divisions shows that while our
teacher salaries are within the range of
the other divisions above 30 years of experience, they are out of range at other
years of experience with gap variability
ranging from 0.67 to 9.32 percent.”
He said that gap should be closed
“to begin to move teachers at various
years of experience toward the target
level of compensation.” Benson also
complains that “all of the school divisions in our comparison group issue
200-day teacher contracts” while Accomack offers 190-day contracts.
“The budget process will also focus
on professional development in fiscal
year 2014 on strategies already identified to support the implementation
of a challenging curriculum and the
delivery of instruction that provides
authentic connections to engage students.” In fiscal 2015, “we will expand
opportunities for students in workforce
and college readiness,” he says.
Budget estimates show a salary
lapse of $154,435, an increase in state
revenues of $504,469, compensation
equity of $250,000, a “collapse of four
teaching assistant scales into one for
$27,975, a school nurse equity adjustment of $120,765 and substitute teacher compensation of $102,125.”
State funding is based on the locality’s ability to pay. “The composite index
is calculated so that the state’s aggregate
share of SOQ costs after deduction of the
state sales is about 55 percent, but the
actual percentage of funding the locality
receives may vary … Accomack County
currently receives funding to cover 62.47
percent of the SOQ costs … the 20122014 Composite Index will result in 62.81
percent of SOQ costs being paid for by
the commonwealth. This represents an
increase in state revenues to the School
Division of just under $100,000.”
Localities may fund education operating costs at levels above their minimum requirements and the state may
also do so as a matter of policy choice,
according to Benson.
“We may be challenged by slow
economic recovery, but we know that
strong K-12 public schools are directly
linked to economic prosperity,” he adds.
Body Found in Water;
Likely No Foul Play
By Linda Cicoira
No foul play is suspected regarding the body of a North Carolina man
found floating in frigid water just north
of the Chincoteague drawbridge early
Wednesday morning, according to Chincoteague Police Chief Eddie Lewis.
Carl Douglas Lewis, 56, of Buford
(no relation to the chief) was an employee of the 40-foot fishing vessel Susan Rose and is believed to have fallen
overboard. His plan had been to spend
the night on board.
The chief said the fisherman was
last seen between 10 and 10:30 p.m.
Monday leaving Don’s Seafood. The
vessel was docked near Robert Reed
Park. A ruling has not been made, but
preliminary autopsy findings indicate
the man drowned, the chief added.

Court Postings Northampton School Board Welcomes Input on Budget
By Linda Cicoira
Accomack Circuit Court
After deliberating for about 20
minutes Tuesday, an Accomack Circuit Court jury acquitted Michael Anthony Press, 44, of Fleming Road in
Horntown of shooting at an occupied
dwelling.
Two of the defendant’s friends, Marcus Cropper and Kenneth Davis, said
Press was with them when the incident allegedly occurred on Aug. 29,
2011. Press also was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. That allegation was not part of this trial.
The proceeding began on Thursday,
Jan. 17, and continued on Tuesday because of the four-day holiday weekend.

The Northampton County School
Board heard suggestions for the FY
2014 budget from members of the community last Wednesday.
David Farlow, a junior varsity coach
at Northampton High School, urged
the board to provide funding for an additional physical education instructor
to help in the weight room during the
school day. Farlow stressed the need for
students to be monitored while working out, as well as someone who would
help them develop healthy eating habits. Farlow also spoke of the need for a
middle school rather than the present
situation where Grade 6 students are
housed at the county’s two elementary
schools and Grade 7 and 8 students attend the high school.
Bus driver Bill Taylor pressed the
board to find a way to include the drivers in the Virginia State Retirement
System (VRS). He said that while the
school system considers the drivers to
be part-time employees, the nature of
their work requires them to be avail-
able full-time. Added Taylor, “There
are no people standing in line to become bus drivers if four or five retire
at the end of this year. It’s an insult for
bus drivers to be called part-time, not
a full-time employee.”
Parent Stephanie Hadden again
pressed the board to find funding to
support the Talented and Gifted (TAG)
program. “It’s ridiculous that I’ve had
to be here for a third time asking for
the same thing,” she said. “You are still
not doing anything for the program.
It’s not acceptable to wait until the
next school year.”
A public hearing on the proposed FY
2014 budget will be held this spring.
Bert Schmidt, president and CEO
for WHRO in Norfolk, spoke of the
benefits for the school system as part
owner of the network. Northampton County Public Schools receive
$667,840 from WHRO in the form of
classroom instruction videos, teacher
training programs, and a multitude of
online classroom offerings.

Clemons reported that the school
enrollment stands at 1,600 students
in grades K-12, with an additional 132
pre-K and special education students.
Clemons said a letter had been sent
to parents advising them that additional security measures are being instituted in the schools. He added that
parents are welcome in the buildings,

Fanning the SPARK of Young Curiosity Leads to Learning
Story and photo by Angie H. Crutchley
In 1998, Grace and Matt Cormons of Hopeton
started a learning program called SPARK (Shore People Advancing Readiness for Knowledge) to bring together families of all backgrounds to learn about the
environment. The program also introduces reading
comprehension and basic math and science concepts.
Fifteen years and well over 200 families later, they
have produced something of a miracle: kids and parents coming together this Saturday morning, sharing knowledge and a love of learning. The fog is thick
and the temperature in the 40s, but that doesn’t stop
26 people from meeting at the Marine Science Consortium (MSC) at Wallops Island to learn about this
month’s theme animal — the otter.
Grace explains why she began the program. “I
wanted to start a family learning program,” she says.
“One thing that makes a difference is that together
with family, you will gain a lot more long lasting results. I wanted to give families a really easy and fun
way to be with their kids.”
This day, after an educational talk about otters by
MSC Education Program Manager Anne Armstrong,
the families examine hairs from local deer, sheep,
rabbits, and other species under a microscope in the
MSC lab. The families are given a chance to draw
what they saw under the microscope and put their
thoughts to paper.
“We look at the hairs because it’s like forensic science,” says Matt Cormons. “If you are taking a walk
and find a hair, you can figure out what animal the
hair belongs to with your field guide. … You’ll be able
to appreciate how each animal has different fur to
adapt to different lifestyles.”
All of the programs are nature-based. “Matt and I
are naturalists,” adds Grace. “I think it’s something
everybody responds to. We want to raise more people
who are stewards for the environment — just to get
out and see and appreciate the area. What we hope
to pass on to the families is just how lucky we are to
live in such a beautiful place: fields, woods, beaches,
marshes, seaside, and bayside.”
The group, dressed in matching T-shirts with the
Sparky the Crab logo, then carpools to Holden’s Creek
in Jenkins Bridge for a field trip. Members are creekwatchers at Holden’s and Messongo creeks in Sanford.
Water samples are taken throughout the year.
“We wanted to see how the creek evolved over the
year,” says SPARKS volunteer Dr. Donna Satterlee, a
professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore,
a specialist in child development, and a kayak expert.
“After the hurricane (Sandy), there was a lot of erosion,
especially off Makemie Park (Holden’s Creek). We lost
a lot of the bank.”
“I’m a naturalist at heart. I actually did my dissertation on the program,” notes Satterlee. “This program works. It is a family-oriented program … and it
builds acceptance.”
The group tests for dissolved oxygen in the water, water temperature, parasites, and various plants
and anomalies in and around the creek.
The SPARK program, funded for eight years by
the Even Start Grant, Chesapeake Bay Restoration
Fund and Title 1, first started for pre-school age children and their families in Accomack County. The program runs for 12 weeks in the spring and 12 weeks
in the fall. But eventually, those kids “aged out” of
the program. The Cormonses created SPARK Nature
Detectives for the older kids. When those kids grew
too old for that, the Cormonses created the Sparkers
program for middle and high schoolers.
José Pichardo of Accomac heard other people mention the program and decided to bring his wife and
children.
“It’s very important that we learn about the sea,
ocean, animals, and ecology of the area,” says Pichardo. He and his family also pick up litter. “The kids
have to learn to clean up for the next generation,”
Pichardo says.
“One reason we pick up litter is so that it won’t
end up part of the creeks and ultimately part of the
bay,” said Cormons.
Myron and Treketta Harris of Wattsville have
been a part of the SPARK program, along with their
kids Myisha and Myron Jr., for 11 years. Treketta is
also a SPARK coordinator.
“I wanted to have a chance to do outdoor activities
with my son and when we got a flyer from school, we
decided to join,” explains Myron Sr. “This program
exposes us to all different cultures and places on the
Shore. I’ve grown up here my whole life and I’ve been
able to see new places that I’ve never been. It really
helps the kids develop. We learn so much from grass
to parasites. This knowledge will carry on throughout their lives, and knowledge is power.”
Conor Friedrich Lovett of Accomac spent this Saturday morning with his parents, Sabine Lovett and
Ralph Friedrich. The program brought the family a
sense of community.
“He was little when we first moved here from
England,” says Lovett. “We found the program and
it taught us about the Shore and exposed us to areas
that we didn’t even know existed. Conor loved getting his SPARK homework from school.”
Strange things happen when kids start learning
at 9 a.m. on a Saturday. They raise their hands to
freely answer questions about watersheds and sheep
fur. Families laugh together and clean the environment. A bald eagle even flies overhead.
Shenay Wharton began bringing her son, Kyler,
when he was 3 years old. Now almost 11 years old
and a student at Metompkin Elementary, Kyler sets
his sights on the future.
“I’d like to be a pilot or a scientist,” he says. “This
program helps me with my science at school. It also
makes me take responsibility for my actions. We

clean up where we go now.”
The SPARK Creekwatchers program is supported
through a grant from the TogetherGreen Fellowship
through June. “The TogetherGreen Fellowship focuses on grassroots conservation efforts,” explains Armstrong. Though program volunteers are looking to find
a new grant before this one runs out, they also hope
that community support will provide future programs
for these young environmentalists. To learn more

SPARK also is looking to expand its activities to
include oyster gardening and some coastal-based
work. “These kids have a strong sense of community
and I hope they maintain that sense of community
and remain open to some change,” said Armstrong.
“I’d love to see a Shore that is safe and supportive of
families and education.”

Four community meetings were held last week on a proposed new main

donated by Shore Bank was presented at the meetings. It calls for a

Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tourney a State Asset
he Virginia Saltwater Fishing
Tournament recently released
its final weekly update for 2012,
giving us an overview of the 5,555 citation fish caught or released last year.
I always have found it interesting
to see who, where and how the leading
entries were caught, as shown on the
following page.
Only two Eastern Shore residents
were among the 21 anglers recognized
for catching the largest fish for those categories that were not “release only.” They
were Ira T. Hudson of Chincoteague, who
caught a 5-pound, 14-ounce gray triggerfish at the Parking Lot off Chincoteague,
and Brenda Fields of Machipongo, who
caught a 1-pound, 12-ounce kingfish
(roundhead) in Hungars Creek.
Four state records were broken this
year. A 74-pound rockfish caught off
Virginia Beach, a 446-pound swordfish caught in the Norfolk Canyon, a
24-pound, 2-ounce tautog caught at Morgan Wreck, and a 122-pound, 1-ounce
wahoo caught off Wachapreague all were
recognized as state records.
What I find amazing is that there
were no citations for spot or gray trout
in 2012.
I have a spot citation for a one-pound
yellow belly caught in 1976 among my
five citations, which also include two
for white marlin releases, a 76-pound
black drum and a 13-pound tautog.
But I never could quite catch a
gray trout citation because the minimum weight kept increasing. When
it was 7 pounds, I would catch a 6½pound trout. Why, I caught a 10-pound,
12-ounce gray trout at Stone Rock in
the days that place looked like a fiber-
glass city, with boats lined up as far as
the eye could see. You guessed it. That
year, the minimum weight had been
raised to 11 pounds.
My son would see photos of catches my friends and I made back in the
1980s and ask where those fish are today. I gave him the standard answer
that fish have cycles and one day they
are coming back. I am beginning to
doubt that.
Imagine this. In 1973, there were
1,575 citation gray trout caught when
the minimum was 7 pounds.
In 1980, a year of my near misses,
there were 1,399 gray trout that were
registered for citations when the minimum weight was 11 pounds.
Again, in 2012, there were none
when the minimum weight was 9
pounds; alas, way too late for me. What
happened?
The plight of spot is almost as sad.
In 2004, less than 10 years ago, there
were 2,052 spot citations, with a minimum weight of 1 pound. In 1973, there
were a total of 1,045. And yet last year,
not a single spot was registered that
met the minimum weight of 1 pound.
But obviously, there are good news
stories as well.
In the years the big gray trout were
running, striped bass numbers were
so low fishing for them was banned for
much of that era. Last year, there were
689 citations issued for striped bass
catches and another 352 for releases,
accounting for over 20 percent of the
total 5,555 citations issued for the year.
Gray-trout numbers may be down,
but speckled-trout anglers enjoyed one
of the best years ever. Citations numbered 456 for speckled-trout catches,
with another 609 issued for speckledtrout releases.
The tournament has always adapt-
ed to the changes in fishery. Bluefish,
another species I recall once catching
in great numbers and up to 9 or 10
pounds, only had five citations for the
16-pound minimum weight. Blueline
tilefish, on the other hand, a fish that
was not even on the radar in the ’70s
and ’80s, had 289 citations in 2012.
The Virginia Saltwater Tournament
is regarded as one of the best of its
kind in the nation. From time to time,
politicians threaten to pull funding to
use the money for other purposes, but
the outcry from fishermen and nonfishermen always quells that idea.
The tournament awards citation
plaques or certificates to anglers who
catch or release fish in any of 35 species that meet minimum length or
weight requirements. The awards are
highly coveted by anglers up and down
the East Coast who recognize Virginia’s program as one of the best.
Visiting anglers pour millions of dollars annually into state coffers, buying
fuel, bait, tackle and licenses, and spending money in hotels and restaurants.
The VSWFT started in 1958. From
1958 to 2011, the tourney issued approximately 201,935 citations.
One of the great additions to the
tournament over the years are the citations issued for releases.
Other popular programs administered by the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament, such as the Junior
Angler Program, and the Expert and
Master Angler programs, will return
unchanged in 2013. The Junior Angler
Program challenges children younger
than 16 to catch and release six species
of saltwater fish. To qualify as an Expert Angler, a fisherman must register
fish in at least six species for citation
awards during the year. Master Angler
requirements are 25 citations (with a
maximum of one per species per year)
in at least five different species over an
unlimited period starting in 1996.
Fishery biologists consider the
tournament valuable. It partners with
the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in the state fish-tagging program
and collects volumes of data on fish
migration and growth. And the awards
themselves provide information on the
population of trophy-sized fish.
It was my pleasure to know Claude
Rogers, the personable executive director of the Virginia Saltwater Fishing
Tournament for the first 29 years of its
existence. He loved to fish Eastern Shore
waters and was a great friend of Bob
Hutchinson, who grew up in Harborton
and worked at the Eastern Shore News
for 11 years before becoming the outdoor
editor for the Virginian-Pilot for over 30
years. Bob and I share the same alma
mater, Central High School, and have
stayed in touch over the years.
Several times I shared coffee with
Bob and Claude at Stingray’s Restaurant and heard great stories from the
pair.
I have fished for red drum in the
surf with Claude Bain, Rogers’ successor, who held the position for 10 years,
and I enjoyed his company as well.
Bain and Bill Hall, one of the premier
fishermen on the Eastern Shore, were
great friends. Bain also relished fishing local waters, often with Hall.
I have not met Lewis Gillingham,
only the third director of the VSWFT
in its 55-year history, but he and Ann
Burnett, who has been with the tournament for 30 years, quickly responded to my requests for information for
this column.
The Virginia Saltwater Fishing
Tournament is a great asset to the
state and always should be preserved.

Northampton Outguns Broadwater 70-68 in Dramatic Fashion
Story and photos by Bill Sterling
Raquan Anderson scored 18 points,
including two key 3-pointers in the final quarter, to lead Northampton boy’s
hoop team to a thrilling 70-68 win over
Broadwater last Thursday night in
front of a packed Viking gym.
Five Northampton players to score
in double figures, with Jaberon Onley
tallying 14 points, Rovonte Rogers and
Shyheim Nock adding 13 each, and Zeb
Carter scoring 11.
Northampton took a 24-10 lead early in the second quarter after opening
the game with great intensity.
Broadwater fought back and held
a 47-39 lead late in the third quarter,
thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Michael Riopel early in the second half.
Following a timeout, the Jackets went
on a 11-2 run to cut the lead to 49-48
“Broadwater, to their credit, fought
back, and I told the players to maintain their poise and keep working
hard on both ends of the floor,” said
Northampton coach Wayne Bell. “I was
very proud of the guys for not giving
up when they lost the lead toward the
end of the game.”
Rogers had a key 3-pointer for the
Jackets with just under a minute in
the game, and Nock scored on a breakaway dunk before Broadwater’s Brendon Burrows nailed a 3-pointer to draw
the Vikings to within 1 point.
Broadwater had the ball with five
seconds remaining and down 2 points,
but could not get off a final shot.
“Since early in the season I have
been preaching defense wins games,”
said Coach Bell. “Our intensity on defense has been much greater as the
season goes on.”
For Broadwater, Riopel had another outstanding game, hitting 10
of 14 shots, including 3 of 3 from the
three-point line, to score a game-high
27 points. Brendan Burrows added 18
points and Matthew McCaskill added
15 points for the Vikings.
Nock had 11 rebounds for the Jackets, while Onley grabbed 10. For Broadwater, Burrows had nine rebounds and
Riopel eight.

70-68 win over Broadwater last Thursday night.

Entries Sought for Junior Duck Stamp
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge invites students in Grades K-12
in public, private, or home schools to
participate in the 2013 Junior Duck
Stamp Design Contest.
“This is an art-based educational
program that allows students to participate in a nationwide waterfowl
arts competition,” said Virginia Junior
Duck Stamp Program Coordinator,
Aubrey Hall. The process also exposes
students to the nation’s wealth of migratory waterfowl and motivates students to take active roles in conserving
these species.”
Hall also emphasized that “the program is meant to be a fun journey into
the world of waterfowl. The artistic
skill level of the students is not the focus of the contest. Not only do we want
artwork from all children, we enjoy
seeing the variety of pictures that the
students produce.”
Participants must select a bird from
a list of native North American water-
fowl. Other design guidelines include
a size of 9”x12” not exceeding ¼” in total thickness; horizontal orientation;
and the absence of lettering, words, or
signatures on the front of the design.
For more information, contact Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge staff
or explore the Federal Duck Stamp
website (www.fws.gov/juniorduck/).

Wachapreague’s Future Intact
Dear Editor:
Wachapreague has obstacles to overcome, like all
small towns, but don’t look for it to dismantle any
time soon. There have been so many positives in the
past five years that these little hiccups are just challenges to embrace.
And though the town did not sponsor its traditional
Christmas party, as correctly reported in “Wachapreague’s Future Hangs in the Balance,” Santa did arrive
by firetruck on Dec. 23 and joined two trailers full of carolers to spread love and joy before inviting children to
share their Christmas wishes with him at the firehouse.
Let’s all work together toward peace and prosperity in Wachapreague.

In Support of BT Commuter Toll
Dear Editor:
Opportunity. Webster’s definition: a favorable
juncture of circumstance , a good chance for advancement or progress.
How often do we hear people comment that we
lack opportunities here on our Eastern Shore? Unfortunately, often. I urge each of the Chesapeake
Bay Bridge and Tunnel (CBBT) commissioners to
vote in favor of a reduced commuter toll.
In 1991, I moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia
from New Jersey to start a business. I left New Jersey because of the high taxes, the dense population
and traffic. I wanted more green space and a better
quality of life.
Ten years ago, when the last commuter toll was being proposed, I was against it because I felt Accomack
and Northampton counties did not have the proper
zoning and Comprehensive Plans in place to protect us
from rapid, unrestrained growth. Through much hard
work by many folks, we now have much stronger zoning, which takes my initial concern out of the equation.
With the current state of the economy, reality has
set in and opportunities are even fewer. Many people
have had to change their way of life. Property values
have declined; taxes have not. Jobs are more scarce,
especially decent-paying jobs. The average age of our
population is increasing and our general population is
in DECLINE. What is most troubling is our young people, upon graduation, are leaving. These young adults
are our future. This trend has been happening for a
number of years and should be a major red flag to all.
Editorial
Sometimes News Seems Too BAD To Be True
S
ome conspiracy theories are compelling and
make you think. And then there are the ones
that have you running for the beach to hide
your head in the sand.
The reference is to an allegation that the recent
massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut was really a staged event set up by the current administration to further the war on weapons.
This preposterous notion started with a college
professor who apparently was trying to get his students to think. His questions have blown up into a
movement to open our eyes to the truth. He’s been
in the news trying to back up his claim.
James Tracy, a communications instructor at a
Florida university, reportedly questioned the lack
of surveillance video or still images from the scene,
the actions of the medical examiner at a news conference, timeline data and the number of bullets the
shooter was supposed to have fired.
Was he teaching his students how to debate?
Those skills are important, especially for lawyers
and politicians. Could all of Sandy Hook really be in
on such a scam? Would there be that many people
who agreed on the topic? What is that saying about
opinions?
Could an entire town population have the same
agenda? Do you know anyone with the ability to
keep quiet long enough to pull off something like
that, especially if it involved the death of children?
Most of the time when two or more people get
together, there is turmoil.
If the conspiracy started 50 years ago and aliens
from outer space were involved in the take over of the
community, one might be able to see the sense in it.
After all, isn’t Wallops Island just a giant movie
set? Isn’t that glorious sky we view every day made
by Disney? Doesn’t your neighbor hold his right
hand in a way similar to that guy who was in an
episode of the “Twilight Zone”?
Wasn’t the whole Sandy Hook tragedy really
made up to humiliate mental patients?
And why aren’t those dirty media people telling
you more about it? Tracy claims they are in on it,
too. As if even one reporter could keep his or her
mouth shut with a story like that.
Next thing you know, people will be saying there
is no graffiti in Accomack County and there weren’t
nearly 40 arsons there. Maybe a Mappsville resident wasn’t killed in his front yard this summer
and his killer really was found. Is that Northampton teacher who admitted to sexually abusing the
5-year-old girl just an actor?
Yep, it was all made up. Writers sure have great
imaginations.
RIP, Snoop - 1999-2013
The Eastern Shore Post is saddened to report that Snoop, the office
cat, died last week as the result of severe diabetes. Snoop did not respond
to emergency treatment she received
after she fell ill and we decided that it was best to
allow her to die comfortably. She and her brother,
Scoop, who died last year of feline HIV, had been
with us since the beginning of the newspaper in
1999. We are grateful for the many years of pleasure they brought all of us, keeping us company as
we worked, and greeting visitors to the office.
The commissioners have a keen understanding of
the CBBT finances. Some may say a commuter toll
would have a negative impact on money received. If
we create more opportunity to commuters, there is
more demand. In essence, $5 is better than zero and
would be a win/win for all.
It is important to be aware of what other residents
think, which is why I started a Facebook page Jan.
12 under FriendsOfCBBTCommuterToll
I ask the commissioners to take a moment to read
the comments.
In closing, I’d like to commend all of the commissioners for serving on the board and kudos to the
entire staff of the CBBT. Each trip over this magnificent span is breathtaking.

Gun Prevalence Frightening
Dear Editor:
We all fear that climate change will destroy our
planet.
But we do not fear that there are enough bullets
or rounds in the hands of gun owners that can kill
every American in the United States.
Support the president on this one.
