INQUIRE ABOUT RESERVING SUSANIN’S FACILITY FOR
LUNCHEONS, LECTURES, MEETINGS AND EVENTS
Conditions of Sale
Bidding on items indicates acceptance of the following terms:
• A 25% buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price on each lot sold on a house paddle; 28% will be added to lots purchased online.
• All lots are sold “AS IS” and all sales are final. Neither we, nor the consignor are responsible for the correctness of any statement of any kind
concerning any lot, whether written or oral, nor for any other errors or omissions in description or for any faults or defects in any lot. Neither
the seller, ourselves, our officers, employees or agents, give any representation, warranty or guarantee or assume any liability of any kind in
respect of any lot with regard to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, description, size, quality, condition, attribution, authenticity,
rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibition history, literature or historical relevance. Except as required by local law any warranty of
any kind whatsoever is excluded by this paragraph.
• The auctioneer has the sole right to settle disputed bids and decide whether or not to reoffer the lot.
• The record of sale kept by the auction house will be taken as final in the event of any dispute.
• The purchaser assumes complete responsibility for items at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer. SUSANIN’S claims no liabilities as to the
conditions of lots past this point.
• Some lots carry reserves. This is a confidential minimum set by the consignor and the auction house below which a lot will not sell. The
reserve will not exceedthe low estimate.
• Absentee bids will be executed when possible as a convenience to our clients. SUSANIN’S will not be held responsible for any errors or
failures to execute bids.
• Payment is due upon receipt of invoice. SUSANIN’S does NOT provide shipping services. Contact information for independent local
• shipping firms can be provided upon request. Obtaining a pre-auction shipping estimate is strongly recommended to potential bidders prior
to sale date.
• Items may be withdrawn at any time prior to the offering of each lot for a fee of 20% of the median of the catalogued estimate.
• The auctioneer reserves the right to reject an opening bid that, in his or her opinion, is not commensurate with the value of the lot.
• SUSANIN’S requires a valid Visa or MasterCard on file in the bidder’s name to complete registration for each auction. Payment must be
• made at the end of the sale unless prior arrangements have been made. SUSANIN’S accepts cash, certified checks and money orders.
Personal checks may be accepted if credit has been established with us prior to sale date. We also accept Visa or MasterCard for invoices
totaling under $5,000. Credit card transactions will not be accepted for international clients.
• All purchases must be paid for within three business days after an auction; items must be picked up within seven business days after an
auction. Property which is not paid for within the three day period will be charged to the purchaser’s credit card. If property is paid for but
• not removed within seven business days after the auction, it may be sent to a storage facility, the cost of which is assumed solely by the
purchaser. SUSANIN’S reserves the right to decide how property may be disposed after seven business days.
Buyer Credits* (Including Gift Certificates) will expire at one year from their application unless otherwise specified.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How can I get information on SUSANIN’S upcoming auctions?
Details about upcoming auctions are available at www.susanins.com, or by phone
at 312-832-9800
Where can I get an auction catalogue?
SUSANIN’S offers a fully illustrated catalogue for $5.00 which can be purchased at the front
desk during auctions and exhibitions. Each catalogue is also viewable and can be downloaded
at www.susanins.com.
Can I see the items prior to the auction?
Yes, and we recommend that you view pieces before placing bids. Viewing is an opportunity
to evaluate pieces first hand. Auction preview begins the Monday prior to the auction from
and remains open throughout the week from 10am-5pm. Extended viewing hours are offered
on the Thursday prior to auction day from 10am-7pm, and Saturday morning from 9am-12pm.
Where does the bidding start?
Bidding generally starts at half of the low estimate of a lot and is at the discretion of the
auctioneer. The estimated price range for each lot is printed in the catalogue.
How do I make an absentee bid, and does it cost anything?
For those who cannot attend the auction, absentee bidding prior to the auction can be placed
and monitored at www.susanins.com. There is no fee to place an absentee bid. The absentee
bid you place indicates only the upper limit which you are prepared to pay. The auctioneer will
bid on your behalf considering competing bids and the reserve. If your bid is successful, you
will also need to pay the customary 25% buyer’s premium along with any applicable sales tax.
It is your responsibility to ascertain if your bids were successful and to make sure they are
paid for within three business days of the sale and picked up within seven business days of
the sale. SUSANIN’S will also notify you of successful bids by mailing an invoice to the address in your records.
If I place an absentee bid, is that the amount I will have to pay?
The absentee bid you make indicates only the upper limit which you are prepared to pay. If you
are not actually outbid on the piece, the chances are you may purchase the lot for less than
your top amount. If you place or monitor your bids online, you will see that at any time you

GLOSSARY
Absentee Bid
A chance to bid on a lot without actually attending the auction. To make an absentee bid,
go online and visit our absentee bid page. Monitor your bids and see exactly where you
stand prior to the live auction. Alternately, fill in an ‘Absentee Bid Form’ (found in the back of
our catalogues) with the name and lot number of the piece and your price limit, and return
the form to SUSANIN’S.
Increment
The amount by which the current high bid is raised each time a higher bid is placed.
Lot
An individual item or group of items that is sold as one unit at an auction.
Paddle/Bidder#
A permanent number assigned to a bidder in order to participate in an auction. SUSANIN’S
Appraisal
bidder numbers can be used for any auction.
For an additional fee, a formal written appraisal can be provided for either fair market value
or for insurance purposes. Fair market value represents what we believe an item will bring at
auction. Insurance values reflect what we believe is the replacement value for a particular item. Pre-Sale Estimate
The price range in which an item is expected to sell at auction. This estimate is based on our
Formal written appraisals are not necessary to determine a presale auction estimate. If you are examination of the item and our knowledge of the prices achieved by similar objects sold
interested in selling an item at auction,SUSANIN’S offers complimentary auction estimates to previously. The pre-sale estimate provides prospective buyers with an important preliminary
guide to value. Unlike formal written appraisals, pre-sale estimates are based on our best

that an item will sell within the estimate at auction.
As Is
Property is sold with all existing faults and imperfections. Potential buyers are encouraged to
inspect each item carefully before bidding.
Bought In
If a lot fails to acquire a bid at or above the minimum sale price (see Reserve Price) set by the
owner. The piece remains the property of the owner. Synonyms included ‘withdrawn,’
‘returned to owner,’ and ‘passed.’
Buyer’s Premium
A commission paid by the buyer that is added to every lot purchased at auction. In-house
buyer’s premium is 25%; online buyer’s premium is 28%.
Conditions of Sale
The terms under which SUSANIN’S and the consignor agree to sell a
lot to the purchaser.
Price List
A list recording the final sale price of each lot. Price lists are available at www.susanins.com
under the ‘Results’ tab.
Provenance
The history of ownership of the property being sold. Provenance is an important part of
the authentication process as it can establish the chain of ownership back to the time a
piece was created.
Reserve Price
The reserve is the confidential minimum price agreed to between the consignor and
SUSANIN’S, below which the property will not ordinarily be sold. If bidding at auction fails
to reach the reserve, the piece is ‘bought in’ and returned to its original owner. To protect the
consignor’s interests, SUSANIN’S keeps reserves confidential.
Consignment
The physical transfer of property (not ownership) to SUSANIN’S for sale at auction.
SUSANIN’S acts as the agent for the consignor.
Sale Number
Every auction at SUSANIN’S is given an individual sale number to distinguish it from
previous and subsequent sales. It is important to have this information when contacting
SUSANIN’S regarding specific lots and when searching catalogues on our website.
Fair Warning
A warning given by the auctioneer that a lot is about to be sold. The fair warning gives
bidders a final chance to increase the bidding. If there are no subsequent bids, the
auctioneer’s hammer falls and the sale is completed.
Phone Bidding
SUSANIN’S will accept phone bids from bidders for lots with low estimates of $500 or greater.
An auctioneer’s assistant in the auction room will relay the bidding information during the
live auction.
Hammer Price
The final bid made before the hammer falls and closes the sale of a lot. The hammer price is
distinct from the final purchase price as it does not include buyer’s premium or any applicable
taxes.
Internet Bidding
SUSANIN’S offers the option of bidding in an auction live through an online bidding platform,
LiveAuctioneers.com. Bidding live on LiveAuctioneers.com allows bidders the ability to bid
during an auction anonymously and from outside the actual auction room. Online buyer’s
premium is 28%.

days following the auction. Unless I make other arrangements, I understand that my credit card will be charged for the full amount of my purchase and if I fail to pick up
within 3 business days, shipping and/ or storage charges will be added.
I UNDERSTAND THAT ALL LOTS ARE SOLD ‘AS IS’, ALL SALES ARE FINAL, AND NO RETURNS ARE ALLOWED.
