Building Blocks 2016
with Kate Joyce
Building Blocks is a skill building workshop that has
students knitting a different 12″ block every month that can
be pieced together to create a lovely sampler
afghan. The emphasis of this class is EDUCATION.
Students are guided through the various stitches and
techniques each month as their knitting knowledge is
increased. With a different skill focus each month there is
something new to learn at each class. Topics such as
gauge, cast ons, bind offs, cables, increases, decreases, lace,
pattern reading and more are covered. Join in the fun!
1st Wednesday of every month, 5 - 6:30 p.m
Building in Color 2016
with June Sorensen
Building in Color is a workshop that has students working
with color. Ten strips go together to make an afghan. Each
months students will work on a different strip and learn a
new technique. The last two months are for finishing and
putting on the border.
1st Monday of every month, 6:30 - 8 p.m.
$10/month or $100/year
$100 for all 12 months

Finished Sizes: Small/Large, 8” tall, approximately

Beginning Knitting
During the first 2 classes, you will learn to cast on, knit,
purl, increase, decrease & cast off. On the 3rd class
session, you will pick out an easy project, learn to read
knitting instructions & work on your chosen project for
the remainder of the course. Fee: $78/4 week class.

students get a 10% discount on class supplies! Beginning Knitting can be taken only two times and
then you must move up to Intermediate Knitting:)

You will learn more advanced techniques of your
choice. For example, you can choose a simple
cabled sweater pattern, a fair isle pattern, an intarsia
pattern - the choice is yours! This class can be taken
over and over and over and over….

Technique Classes
Continental Knitting (& Purling) with Darlene Joyce
Learning continental
knitting, sometimes
called picking, can help
give you options while
knitting. Some knitters
find that they can knit
more evenly and quickly
with this method. Students will learn both
knit and purl stitch. Additional practice is advised to become proficient.

Choosing the Right Yarn & Blocking with Darlene Joyce
Learn how to choose the right yarn
for any project. Students will learn
how to read yarn labels, how different fibers behave, how to substitute
yarns, how to determine yardage
needed and how to make a measureable gauge swatch. Students will also
learn the basics of blocking, including wet blocking, mist blocking and
steam blocking and when to use each
technique.

Learn the very interesting
cross stitch pattern while
knitting a scarf in your
favorite Koigu color.

Basic Socks with Darlene Joyce
Knit a basic sock using fine needles and
special sock yarn. You will learn to use
double pointed needles, turn a heel and
create a gusset. The instructor will discuss ways to ensure a proper fitting sock.

Learn the basics of true Bavarian knitting, including a brief history, how
to read Bavarian charts (words

Bavarian Fingerless Mitts with Georg L uxton
Learn some Bavarian basics while working on a
fingerless mitt. You can
use your favorite technique for
knitting small circumferences in
the round (i.e. double points,
two circular needles or magic
loop).
Basically Bavarian Cowl with Darlene Joyce
No Bavarian knitting
experience required.
Darlene designed this
cowl for the retreat for those
students who wanted an
“easier” project. One skein of
HiKoo Simpliworsted and 24”
circular needle in size US 8.

Sedum Trail Scarf/Wrap with Darlene Joyce
“Sedum Trail beautifully welcomes a full dose of delicate
Evening Glory lace, rows of simple leaves and eyelets creating a
unique piece framed with a picot
edging.” Both written and charted. Lace knitting happens on both
the right and wrongs sides. Yarns
can be from fingering to worsted.
Darlene’s sample is in HiKoo’s
Rylie. Designed by Monika Sirna.
My First Sweater (That Fits) with Darlene Joyce
Use Ann Budd’s book, The
Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns and the yarn of your
choice to make a basic pullover sweater or cardigan in
any size. The set-in-sleeve is
flattering to almost all body
types. Couture techniques are
taught to refine your knitting
repertoire, including measuring your body, adjusting the
pattern, paired increases/
decreases, selvedge edges,
sloped
bind off,
seaming,
and picking up stitches. In order to allow
for knitting time, this class skips
some weeks and due to popular
opinion, has been extended to be
a 5 week class.

Bavarian knitting skills to use.

Socks from the Toe Up with Courtney Buckalew
With the yarn of your choice &
some basic foot measurements,
Courtney will guide you through
the basic calculations & techniques
for knitting a sock. The Turkish
Toe does not use short rows like
the German method and many knitters find it easier to execute. Students can opt to use double points
or two circular needles.

Beginning/ Intermediate Crochet
This class is for crocheters of any skill level. It is tailored around what you know and
what you'd like to learn. If you're new to
crochet, you'll get started with chain, single,
and double crochet stitches. Already know
the basics? Then learn to read patterns and
stitch diagrams. If you want to learn classics like granny
squares, doilies, motifs, or filet crochet, only your imagination is the limit! Come prepared with a project of your
choosing, and let's get started.

mitten with a beautiful trellis center. The mitten starts

shawl for the 2015 Chicago Yarn Crawl. Students will learn how to
construct a side to side
shawl with a pointed lace
edge on one side and an I

Class Policies
Class Materials: Except when noted, yar ns must be
purchased from Mosaic Yarn Studio. Come in as soon as
possible to pick out your supplies in case we need to order
something. Students receive a 10% discount on all class
materials! Please come to class with any gadgets you might
need!

Pre-Registration: Pr e-registration is required for all classes.
You may register by phone via Visa/Mastercard or you can send
in the class registration form above. Of course, you can always
register in person!
Loosely cast on 36 sts. Join in the round and, knit 2
rounds, purl 1 round, k2 rounds, purl 1 round. Continue knitting in the round (St st) until piece
measures 4 1/2” from cast on.
Minimum: A minimum of three students is required in order
for a class to run. You will be notified one week in advance if
the minimum is not met and your deposit will be refunded.
Thumb Round: K19 (K11), drop yarn, with a scrap
yarn k6, slip these 6 sts back onto the left hand needle, pick up dropped yarn and knit to end of the
round. Continue knitting in the round until pieces
measures 6” from the cast on edge, purl 1 round, k2
rounds, p1 round, k1 round, bind off knitwise.
Thumb: Take out scrap yarn, catching 6 sts on the
bottom and 5 sts on the top. Picking up 2 sts at each
corner to bring the number to 15 sts, knit in the
round until thumb is 1” from base, purl 1 round, k2
rounds, purl 1 round, bind off knitwise. Enjoy!
