ooresville Mayor Miles Atkins (right) received a treat when he opened his mail last
week — this photo, from the White House, of himself with President Barack Obama.
A White House photographer snapped the picture during the president’s late June
visit to Mooresville. A nice keepsake, indeed.
Registration open for 17th Race for the Cure
From staff reports
Mooresville-area runners and
walkers are invited to register now
for the 17th Annual Race for the Cure
in uptown Charlotte on Oct. 5, presented by Novant Health and Mecklenburg Radiology Associates.
Online registration is open through
Sept. 28. Go to Komen Charlotte’s
website at www.komencharlotte.org
to register as an individual, join a
team or to donate.
The Komen Charlotte Race for the
Cure is a Susan G. Komen for the
Cure fundraiser featuring a 5K timed
race, 5K noncompetitive run/walk,
one-mile route, 50-yard kids’ dash,
race expo and survivor’s tent. Festivities begin at 6 a.m., with the timed
run beginning at 7:15 a.m., and the
walk/run beginning at 7:50 a.m.
“It is a celebration of life where runners and walkers of all ages gather to
honor survivors who are winning the
battle against breast cancer and to
remember those who have lost their
lives to this devastating disease,”
said Lori Vaccaro, executive director
of Komen Charlotte.
“We are so thankful for all of the
sponsors who have joined us this
year, and for the team captains and
team members who are already in
full fundraising mode. We really
can’t do it without the community’s
support and dedication.”
Vaccaro said that the race committee is adding live entertainment,
food trucks and competitive racers’
and survivors’ ceremonies.
Komen Charlotte has a $1 million
goal. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds go to the local community for
breast cancer education, screenings,
diagnostic services and treatment
supporting a 13-county service area
surrounding Mecklenburg County,
including Iredell.
The remaining 25 percent of proceeds supports the Komen National
Research Grant Program, which
funds major research programs
across the country.
