The Oct. 28 editorial about Montgomery County candidates called
the Purple Line a "much-needed project." Can The Post cite one
credible research study of the potential ridership of the proposed
Metrorail line to support that statement?
Bent Flyvbjerg of Aalborg University in Denmark has studied
many light-rail projects around the world and discovered that on
average the ridership is half the projected amount and the costs
are much higher than the estimated amount, for a negative rate of
return. In addition, he found that large annual losses continue
forever and that operations must be supported by local taxes.

You will come back
appreciative of the wonderful system we have. Metro riders
should let the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
know how much we appreciate security and safety; kiosk
managers who provide directions and who address problems and
concerns; and stations that are clean, that are relatively well
cooled and heated, and that have good signage and escalators
(whether or not they work all the time).
