PAID SICK LEAVE PROVISIONS
California’s Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 requires employers to provide a set amount of paid sick leave (PSL) to employees working
in California. Although the Act establishes minimum requirements, employers have the option to provide more time off than the minimum required under the
Act.
Some cities have also taken on the issue of Paid Sick Leave (PSL). For example, the cities of San Diego and Los Angeles recently enacted new PSL ordinances that are effective this July, and these ordinances contain different provisions than the statewide PSL law. Other jurisdictions, such as San Francisco,
Oakland and Emeryville, have had PSL ordinances on the books for a while.
If you have employees working in a city with a local PSL ordinance, you will need to comply with both the state and the local law. Eligibility for PSL may vary
from city to city. For each provision, protection or benefit, employers will need to provide employees whichever is more generous to the employee.
For example, under state law, no matter how much PSL an employee has accrued in his/her leave bank, an employer can limit the employee’s use of accrued
PSL to three days or 24 hours per year.
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to anticipate every possible scenario that California employers might be presented with when trying to make sure their own customized policies comply with local and state PSL laws. Keep in mind that if you are a national company, PSL laws outside of California also may apply to you.

•
Check if any local ordinances may affect how you pay, provide benefits to or otherwise treat your employees.
•
If you have employees working in a city with a local PSL ordinance, review your existing policies to make sure they comply.
•
Consult legal counsel to develop a plan for complying with PSL laws in other localities.

Save a Life While Supporting Your
Community
The fourth annual Nine Cities Blood Drive Challenge returns this
month with Palm Desert competing against eight other Coachella
Valley communities to see who can inspire the most blood donations.
Mark your calendar, ask your neighbors to do the same, and
show your community spirit by giving blood on Saturday, July 16,
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Center.
Your donation will support your community and could save a life.
After placing first in 2014 with 138 donated units of blood, Palm
Desert fell to fifth place last year. We hope to reclaim the champion
title this year and once again be number one in life saving donations.
Donors must be at least 15 years of age (ages 15-16 need a signed
parental consent form), be in general good health, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.
All donors will receive a free, single-day admission ticket ($38.99 value) to Wet ‘n’ Wild Palm Springs,
valid through the 2016 season.

Someone Filed a Tax Return Using

In many cases, when someone
files a tax return using your Social Security number, you won’t
find out until after the second
return is filed. The second return
could be from you or the person
who has stolen your information.
When the IRS receives two
different returns with the same
Social Security number, the second return filed will be rejected.
IRS Form 14039
When you discover another a
tax return has been filed with
your Social Security number,
you’ll use IRS Form 14039 to
alert the IRS. When you complete this form, you’ll indicate
that someone has stolen your
identity and it has affected your
tax account since they have
filed a return using your identifying information.
You’ll also provide information
about the tax year affected and
the last return you filed prior to
the identity theft.
Additional precautions
When someone has enough of
your personal information to
file a fraudulent tax return, they
can use your identity to commit other crimes. In addition
to alerting the IRS, you should
place a freeze on your credit
report file with all three credit
bureaus to prevent unauthorized
accounts from being opened.

Attention Coachella
Valley
Leadership Coachella Valley (LCV) is currently accepting applications for its 20162017 class. Students meet and interact with community leaders and experts in forum
and group discussions monthly from September-June. The program fosters involvement
in valley-wide needs and concerns by providing perspective and information. Up to 40
applicants will be chosen for the LCV program that is designed to identify, motivate and
develop future community leaders.
The Leadership Coachella Valley student selection process is based upon current or leadership potential, passion for community commitment and/or involvement and future leadership desire. Candidates
must be 18 years of age and have lived or worked in the Coachella Valley for at least one year.
The incoming Board of Directors for the 2016-17 year include: Chairman Greg Grub (’13), Stewart
Title Guaranty Company; Anna Frost (’11), Spectrum Reach; Alexis Ortega (’14), Desert AIDS Project;

booths for attendees to visit and learn about the
different services, programs and goods available in
the area. Last year over 2000 attended the Business
Expo.
With no time to waste, planning is already underway for the 52nd Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart
Parade, October 30, on El Paseo. Past Board of
Director and 20 year Golf Cart Parade committee
member Mike Hardin, owner of the Lock Shop, has
graciously volunteered to serve as the chair of the
Golf Cart Parade Committee. If you would like to
assist in planning this year’s event, please contact
Mike. I’m sure he would appreciate the help! This
year’s theme is “Golf Carts, Ghosts and Glitter.”
Finally, I would like to take a moment to give an
update on some of the new exciting programs we
are looking to put into place for PDACC’s new fiscal
year. This fall be sure to watch for a two-day conference, workshops, and our popular and feel good
event, Peace Officer and Public Safety Officers
Award Luncheon. As if that is not enough, the spring
season will bring a new quality of life event that will
be prosperous to the Valley’s businesses and fun for
the residents.
In the coming months as planning moves forward,
watch for more exciting news to unfold from your
only 5 Star Accredited Chamber in the valley to keep
you on the cutting edge and in the know.
