Welcome to our 26th Season!
We are excited to present a dynamic offering of programs reflecting—and
reflecting upon—the world around us.
This season, we bring you fiery music from Spain and Brazil; provocative
performances in unlikely places—including a parking lot and a boxing ring;
shows exploring hot topics from gender to gun violence; and a multimedia
event sure to capture the hearts and imaginations of all. We are also proud
to launch our new creative space—the Live Arts Lab—which will be home to
conversations, showcases, open mics, workshops, and more.

Nora Chipaumire’s
portrait of myself
as my father
A dance performance that celebrates and critiques masculinity—
the black African male in particular—all within the confines of a
boxing ring.
Bessie Award-winning dancer/choreographer and former Urban
Bush Women star Nora Chipaumire continues her examination of
race and gender in this profound and highly-personal work, which
considers the African male (and the father she never knew) through
the lens of colonialism, Christianity and liberation struggles.
Tethered together in a boxing ring, she and Senegalese dancer
Pape Ibrahima Ndiaye dance, struggle, and fight against prejudices,
pressures, and the weight of traditions and history, as Jamaicanborn, Brooklyn-based dancer Shamar Watt cheers and coaches
from the corner.

Steve Parker’s
Traffic Jam
On the heels (wheels) of our epic Acoustic Bicycle Tour
presentation comes another transit-considering, communityengaging, music-making performance piece in motion.
Highlighting a hot topic in Miami—ranked 7th worst gridlock in
the nation—Traffic Jam is a quirky and thoughtful project that
engages community to create compositions for an ensemble of
cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and conventional instruments.
A series of workshops with local artists will explore composition,
improvisation, and unconventional music making, and culminate
in a free, interactive public performance where audience members,
too, can “play” their vehicles.
“Music in a traditional auditorium is well and good,
but if we’ve learned one thing from Steve Parker, it’s
that all the world’s a concert hall. His boldness and
fervor inspire us and carloads of other music lovers
to go off-roading with him at every opportunity.” —The Austin Chronicle

Tomatito
Direct from Spain—an evening with the world’s greatest living
flamenco guitarist!
Born in Andalucia into a family of flamenco guitarists, José
Fernández Torres, better known as “Tomatito”, was discovered as
a child prodigy and mentored by the late great Paco De Lucía.
For years, he was the exclusive accompanist of the legendary
singer Camarón de la Isla (“it´s easy to understand that a genius
like Camarón could only talk musically to a genius like Tomatito”
—Miami Herald). Now, with the recent passing of both his mentor
and his musical partner, Tomatito honors their legacies and stands
as the leading purveyor of Spain’s most celebrated tradition.
He will be joined by the electrifying dancer José Maya, who has
collaborated with many of the most renowned flamenco artists
including Farruquito, El Güito, Manolete, Estrella Morente, Gerardo
Núñez and Diego El Cigala, and has opened for pop stars Marc
Anthony, Beyoncé and Björk.

Maria Rita
Brazilian samba sensation, daughter of the legendary Elis
Regina, returns to Miami for the first time in nine years!
Her talent may be genetic, but Maria Rita has made her own mark
on the Brazilian music scene, taking the MPB (Musica Popular
Brasileira) world by storm since her debut album in 2003 and
refusing to cover any of her mother’s songs until a decade into
her career. Her warm and flirtatious manner, beautiful timbre
and tremendous range allow for heart-tugging and jaw-dropping
interpretations of Brazil’s beloved genre: samba.

Scott TURNER Schofield’s
Becoming a Man
in 127 Easy Steps
An irreverent and dynamic one-person show that provokes
both the deep questions and the locker-room jokes about
what it means to become a man.
Moving beyond the transgender narrative that focuses on
the experience of transition, Schofield’s stories explore the
drama and hilarity of living a new life in the “opposite” gender,
asking: “I changed my sex. Now what?” His playful storytelling,
silk fabric acrobatics, and audience participation format
(which invites viewers to decide—live—which stories they
will hear during each performance) reveal just a few of the
127 stories that compose the life of a guy who just happens to
have been born a girl.

Byron Au Yong’s
Trigger
A riveting oratorio about coming of age in the age of guns.
Originally inspired by the Virginia Tech Massacre, and now echoing
more recent incidents, Trigger tackles themes surrounding gun
violence in America by incorporating community perspectives
into a theatrical choral project. As debates pingpong around
gun control, the Second Amendment, and civil liberties, voices
both murmur and soar in this initiative about belonging and
isolation. With listening and empathy as core experiences of
this musical work, Trigger strives to encourage, rather than
silence, numerous voices.

Montreal-based scratch DJ and music producer Kid Koala.

The story of a headphones-sporting robot on the verge of
obsolescence and infatuated with a winsome office drone
unfolds live via real-time filming/editing/projection of more than
a dozen miniature stages and a cast of puppets. The elaborate
action is directed by K.K. Barrett, recently Oscar-nominated for
Her. DJ Kid Koala and the dynamic Afiara Quartet provide the
live score for this silent film.

backdrop to backdrop and watching the ingenuity of the
perspective and the minuscule gestures that translate
