NEWS FROM THE
HEALTH ROOM
The beginning of the year has been a
busy one in the health room! We are already seeing numerous sicknesses such
as fevers, cough, vomiting, strep, pneumonia, pertussis and multiple seasonal
allergies.
That being the case this is a great reminder to PLEASE keep your child
home if they are not feeling well. Students who are ill should remain home
until symptom free for
24 hours, and the school
nurse should be informed of any communicable diseases
(influenza, chicken pox,
strep throat, pink eye,
head lice, etc.). Students should be free of fever (100 degrees or higher) for 24 hours and free of
vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24
hours………..THANK YOU!

Bully Prevention Week
“A Chain Reaction of Kindness”
(Encouraged by Rachel’s Challenge)
October 7-10, 2013
In February 2011, it was resolved by the State Board
of Education to declare the first full week in October
“Bully Prevention Week” as a symbol of the commitment to ensure safe and nurturing school environments.
Brougham will be celebrating
this week with several different
activities!
THE WEEK BEFORE Bully
Prevention Week, Thursday, October 3rd,
Trisha Madsen will come to present to second through fifth graders about how they
can stand up for themselves and each other.
Rachel’s Challenge
On September 17, our fifth grade students had
the opportunity to attend a kindness and compassion assembly at Frontier Trail called
Rachel’s Challenge. The Rachel’s Challenge program is based on the concept that kindness and
compassion can be taught and recognized by all
of us; students, parents, and faculty included.
Also, counselor guidance lessons will be focused on bully prevention in all grades.
In the MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS each
day during this week we will ask a question
related to Rachel’s Challenge, and students
will write their short answer on a color postit note: When students go to lunch, they will
stick their post-it answer onto a poster in the
hallway by the lunch room.
Rachel Scott, the young lady the program is
named for, believed that she could start a chain
reaction of kindness and compassion that would
affect the world in an amazing way. She
strongly believed that one person can make a
huge difference.
KINDNESS CHAIN: Each grade level will be
A special thank you to Olathe Public Schools
Foundation for funding and providing this opportunity for our students!
Fourth and Fifth graders will sign this ban-
creating kindness chains to display. When
students see an act of kindness, they will add
it to their grade level chain!

ner displayed in the 4th & 5th grade hallway
accepting Rachel’s challenge!
Spanish Happenings:
.Kindergarten and 1st grade: We are singing,
dancing and learning Spanish in a whole new
way! We are working on counting 1-10,
learning parts of the body, and some new
action words. Your child should have
brought home our first project; a picture
of el mar, el pez and el sol. Ask them if they
can tell you what they are!
2nd grade and 3rd grade: We reviewed classroom objects, and now we are talking about
months of the year, seasons, and weather.
4th grade: Talking about school subjects
and counting by 10s.
5th grade: Reviewing furniture and appliances. Counting by 10s and 100s.
Breakfast and Books
Rise and Shine! Preschool and
Kindergarten families wake up
with “Breakfast and Books” on
Friday, October 4th. If you are
able to attend please call 780-7357

browsing and reading in the
Brougham Library. Day care is not

Brougham Students
“Walked Like a Panther”
The Brougham Walk-A-Thon was a huge success this year! Students enjoyed
walking laps at Brougham park. Students set individual & classroom goals but
also tried to meet the all school goal of “walking across Kansas” or 423 miles.
Well, it was no surprise that the wonderful students of Brougham surpassed
that goal by walking a total of 519.5 miles. They were also successful in raising
close to $15,000 for our PTO.
A special thank you to Jennifer Pollard, Kim Kuntz, Krista Bermudez, Lisa
Gillam, Tonya Tavernaro, Kellie Wheatley, Maureen Gray, Kathleen Howard,
Tasha Cain, Lisa Circle, Becky Sears, John Balmer, Lisa Balmer,
and Kristin McBride for all their work on the Walk-a-thon committee this year and for making the event, anniversary party,
and bonus color run a success. The money raised from the Walka-thon will help fund the PTO’s annual budget approved at the
September meeting.

Planning Begins for Elementary Construction Projects
Thanks to the successful passing of the June 2013 bond by voters in the Olathe Public Schools, district staff are
hard at work planning for construction projects at elementary schools across the district. Staff are meeting with
architects and design work is beginning on the projects that include transitioning the district’s
final set of elementary school classrooms without doors to classrooms with doors and the reconfiguring of front entrances to feature pinch points. A detailed plan for each building and communication about construction will be forthcoming as final details are determined. It is anticipated that
the majority of these projects will begin this winter and are expected to be complete by next fall.
