Quite frankly, prior to writing this article, I hadn’t given the Earth or Earth Day much thought. As I began to think about Earth Day, however, it occurred to me that Earth Day is not a celebration, but a reminder. It is a reminder of how precious this Earth and Earth Day the natural flora and fauna of By Elizabeth Careaga the Earth are. It is also a reminder that long before Earth Day, annually celebrated human beings had claimed on April 22nd, was established this planet as their home, it by Senator Nelson in 1970 for was a dwelling to many of the everyone in the world to birds and trees that are develop their inner “green sighted through the windows thumb” for at least one day in of our houses. A plan is in effect to plant 7.8 billion trees by Earth Day’s 50th in 2020. That means one tree for every person on the planet! To celebrate the occasion of Good Shepherd’s first year as a Catholic Academy as well as to promote environmental awareness throughout the academy, a prayer service will take place along with the planting of a tree. Earth Day is a day to reflect on our planet, our environment, and what we can do to help keep it healthy! 1 The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Song By Alexa Lankford, Kylie Powers, and Reagan Murphy Teach your family and friends this song and encourage them to keep the Earth safe too! By Thomas O’Neill The New York Mets 2016 starting pitchers are Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Jacob DeGrom, Steve Matz, Bartolo Colon and coming back from Tommy John surgery is Zack Wheele r. Last season, the Mets pitching staff got the team to a National League Pennant and also to the World Series. Unfortunately, they lost to the Kansas City Royals. The average fastball for the Mets starters in the postseason was 96 MPH. The average fastball for the rest of the MLB was 92 MPH. Last year on Noah Syndergaard’s debut he pitched a 97.1 MPH fastball. He is now throwing a 95 MPH slider which is amazing! Picture that coming at you! Jacob DeGrom’s fastball is 94 MPH and his slider is 89.7 MPH. These pitchers really throw heat! Good Shepherd Swim Season By: Sophia Garomo The boys and girls swim season has come to an end. Both exciting and sad events took place. This year the boys had a very successful season. They won all but one meet. Also they came in a close 3rd in the championships. The team in second was Olan, and in first was St.Sebastian. They are two of the most competitive teams.Overall the swim season for the boys did their best and worked very hard. The girls were also very successful this season. They won the majority of their meets and came in 5th in the championships. Even though we came in 5th, we all did our best, and tried our hardest. But earlier in the season we heard sad news. Our head coach, Mary Burns, was going to retire from the swim team, after coaching for over 25 years. We know that our other coaches will take over, but it is still sad hearing our head coach was leaving. She will most certainly be missed. Our swim season was once again very exciting and at some points sad, but all that really mattered is that we did our best. Guess The Teacher By Jacqueline Cox What is your favorite color? RollnRoaster Known as the Sheepshead Bay legend, RollnRoaster has been the home of the classic roast beef sandwich since 1970. Along with the roast beef sandwich, their specialty dishes include the RollnRoaster turkey sandwich, the corn fritters, and of course...the friesncheez. RollnRoaster even has a sign to remind their customers that “You can have cheez on anything you pleez.” The president\owner, Buddy Lamonica, claimed this deserted area in Sheepshead Bay due to a bet! After four expansions and over 17,000,000 roast beef sandwiches later, RollnRoaster still holds the title as the original “fastfood” joint of Brooklyn. Travels of a Young Italian Foodie By Alessandra Depaulis No ma倁er what na厯䥏onality you are, everyone loves Italian food! My first stop was Frank’s Pizza on the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Quen厯䥏n Road in Marine Park. I’ve been there many 厯䥏mes. I always order a regular slice and a salad. Their slices always taste the same – scrump厯䥏ous! The mozzarella cheese stays on the slice when I fold it. It has just the right amount of sauce and it’s cooked un厯䥏l it’s nice and crispy. My favorite part of the salad is the dressing. It clings to the le倁uce, tomatoes and cucumbers. It’s a chunky roasted pepper type of dressing. Then comes dessert. I order a tortoni, which Is a small cup of vanilla ice cream with almond dust and a cherry in the middle. Can’t wait to go back. When my family and I are Coney Island, we can’t forget to stop at Gargiulo’s which is a block away from Luna Park. It’s family owned and has been since 1907! While I wait for my food, I like to look at the pre倁y tropical fish tank. We usually start off our meal with some freshly baked focaccia bread. It comes to you piping hot with fresh tomatoes on top. Then my favorite pasta dish, penne with file倁o di pomodoro sauce is being served. I usually eat the whole por厯䥏on and I love to dip the focaccia bread in the delicious sauce. It’s finally 厯䥏me for dessert – they are known for their cannoli cake which I love to devour. Last but not least, my favorite restaurant on Long Island ‐ Gino’s Pizzeria & Tra倁oria of New Hyde Park. They have an enormous counter with all types of pizza slices. To name a few: Marinara, Buffalo Chicken Slice, Garlic Knot Slice, Salad Slice, Chicken Marsala, Ravioli Vodka slice and many many more. My favorite pie to order is a Margarita Personal Pie – fresh mozzarella, crushed tomatoes and fresh basil. I usually follow this with an order of penne with vodka sauce. This vodka sauce is one of a kind. I cannot leave without some sweet and fluffy homemade zeppoles sprinkled with powdered sugar. If you’re a chocolate lover, you can have it served with a cup of Nutella for dipping. I wish this Gino’s was in Brooklyn so that I could go to eat there with my Good Shepherd friends and see my dad more o閵뮌en. Ireland By Tommy Byrnes One of my favorite places to visit in the world is Ireland. I have a lot of cousins over there and it’s a beautiful country. Ireland is 3,000 miles from NY and takes about 6 hours to get to by plane. It is an island in the North Atlantic. Once it was completely owned by England, but today only 6 counties are still under English Rule, and it is known as “Northern Ireland”. The other 32 counties are in the “Republic of Ireland”. The language of Ireland is Gaelic, but it’s most popular language is English. The symbol of Ireland is the shamrock, which St. Patrick used to teach people about the Holy Trinity. The same way a shamrock has 3 leaves as part of one stem, there are 3 Persons in one God. Some fun facts about Ireland: Two of Ireland's biggest sports are Football, which is similar to our version of soccer and Hurling, which is similar to lacrosse. They call French Fries “Chips” They call potato chips “Crisps”
Ireland is covered with beautiful green ကields and has stone walls all over the country that have been there for hundreds of years. I was rudely awoken by the sound of screaming and the smell of smoke, sensing something amiss in the air. I quickly tumble out of my bed, not bothering to put on shoes. I run out of my room,in hopes of finding my mother, father, and twin brother but come to an abrupt stop, when I see women with their children trying to find safety and pack warriors brawling off attackers and trying to put out the fires. Next thing you know something, well more like someone comes flying into me.I turn around and swiftly move my head just in time to dodge a strike from an attacker. The attackers consist of rogues, vampires, and witches.(yup you heard me,I live a life of fairytales)before the attacker can strike another blow at me, he goes flying out of the window.I look up and see my brother Ethan. He grabs me and starts running off toward our secret chamber.Waiting inside is our mother and father with worried faces. The Bond Between Two By Katherine Celentano The Day My Cat Talked By Sophia Fortuna Once upon a time there was a girl named Hailey. She has always dreamed about having a dog… but not just any kind of dog, a golden retriever. She believes golden retrievers have so much intelligence, independence, and they are very loyal. On December 20th, Hailey went to go to the pet store to buy new supplies for her Guinea Pig. After getting everything she needed, she went to go look at the dogs. Then, she saw the dog she had been dreaming of ever since she was two. Hailey really wanted to get the dog right there but she didn’t have enough money to get it. She went home and asked her mom for money to pay for the dog, but her mother told her she would have to work for her to earn money to buy herself a dog. The next day, Hailey started to get to work! She set up a lemonade stand and earned $10.00. Then the following day she set up a bake sale and earned $5.00. The day after that she sang songs in the street for money and earned another $10.00. Everything was great until Christmas Eve. That day, Hailey earned enough money to buy her dream dog. But when she reached the pet store, the dog she wanted was not there. She saw a sign on the cage saying “I’ve been adopted”. As Hailey walked away slowly a tear fell from her eyes…… TO BE CONTINUED….. Chapter 1 “I’m so bored!” I complained to my cat, Shadow. “Meow” he responded. “I wish you could talk, I said.” “Sophia,” my mom called, “time for bed.” “Ok,” I yelled back. “Come here, Shadow,” I said. He came to me and hopped into bed with me. I pet him as I drifted off into a dreamland. Chapter 2 I was laying in my bed with Shadow. He was on top of me. Then he talked! And it wasn’t in his little cat voice. “Hi, Sophia,” he said. I jumped up and screamed, “How can you talk?!” “I’ve always been able to. But cats don’t tell people about it,” he explained. “I promise I won’t tell anyone,” I said. “Good,” he said. Then I woke up. “Can you still talk?” “Yes,” he answered. It is dark and I think to myself How long have I been knocked out . James is wide awake giving me s ignals to be quiet and then I s ee we are accompanied by three other men two of them look tall and weaker than the other, the third is stronger looking than the other two and s horter by a few inches. We are in the pharmacy adjacent to the convenience s tore and I knew this because I had been in there many times before with by mother and father before the whole world was torn apart. I could feel the twine on my hand was loose s o I looked around to see if anyone was watching then I s tarted to untie the knot. When I s tart to untie the knot the tall men realize James and I are awake and s tart to walk towards us. They s top right in front of me and ask “Why were you in this part of Brooklyn?”. At first I am hesitant to answer, then the other tall man asks again with a more harsh tone to his voice as if to say, or else. James gives me a look to tell me it was alright, s o i tell him we were here to get things for our group. The me look confused and call the third man over. They s peak for a moment then the third man comes over to us, with a knife and I’m s cared they will s tab me or James but he cut the twine and s ays “We are s orry for the confusion we thought you were part of Lucifer’s loyalists.” The first man s ays “I’m Patrick, pleased to meet you.” and holds out his hand for me to s hake. The s econd s ays “I hope you can forgive me, my name is Benjamin.” and the third s ays “I am Tyler, can we be of any assistance on your journey?”. James asks me for the list I pull it out of my back pocket and hand it to him. He reads the list to Patrick, Benjamin and Tyler and they go off to find the items on my list. They come back in minutes with everything we need and helped us to carry it back to the camp. My mother greets me at the gate and asks what took s o long. Tyler kindly explained what happened and put the things we found away with me and James. After everyone in camp was going into their cabins to go to sleep my mom offered the shelter, they kindly declined and left. To be continued...
