This demographic profile was developed by Man-Tra-Con
Corporation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the
economic health of southern Illinois by providing services designed to
build a quality workforce. With guidance from the Chief Local Elected
Officials and the Southern Illinois Workforce Investment Board (SIWIB),
Man-Tra-Con serves Local Workforce Investment Area #25, comprised
of Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Perry, and Williamson counties. ManTra-Con also joins forces with the Workforce Investment Board for Local
Workforce Investment Area #26 in implementing special projects such as the State of
Illinois' Critical Skill Shortages Initiative (CSSI) for the Southern Economic
Development Region (SEDR).
This booklet provides current information that reflects the characteristics of
population, labor force, taxes, income, housing, utilities, education, quality of life, and
transportation in Williamson County, Illinois. Our intent is to provide investors,
entrepreneurs, and government or business administrators with information useful for
making decisions or policies on business attraction, retention, and expansion. The
information provided can also be used by individuals who currently live and work (or
plan to live and work) in the local areas to know more about Williamson County.

Williamson County, Illinois
Williamson County is one of 102 counties in the State of Illinois. Its county seat is
Marion. In 2000, the total population of Williamson County was 61,296, with a median
age of 38.8. According to U.S Census 2000, 99.0% of its population is reported as only
one race, including 95.3% of these self-reported as White and 2.5% self-reported as
African Americans. In 2005, the Per Capita Personal Income (PCPI) of Williamson
County was $27,169, ranked 49th in the state. This PCPI was 75% of the state average,
$36,264, and 79% of the national average, $34,471. Average household size and average
family size were 2.35 persons and 2.89 persons respectively.
Williamson County is located in southern Illinois, approximately 120 miles southeast
of St. Louis, Missouri and 320 miles south of Chicago. The county has a total area of
444.38 square miles, of which 423.41 square miles are land and 20.96 square miles are
water.
The major cities and villages in Williamson County include Bush, Cambria,
Carterville, Colp, Crainville, Creal Springs, Energy, Freeman Spur, Herrin, Hurst,
Johnston City, Marion, Pittsburg, Spillertown, and Whiteash.
