Shackman Electrostatic Loudspeakers and Amplifiers 6 Shackman-reromanus Listing of Shackman Electrostatic Speakers Products Shackman ESL amplifier V-Type-WR on PCB, variable polarisation power supply INTRODUCTION: Understanding the Shackman ESL products nomenclatura General info on Shackman ESL products Shackman products range from bare ESL panels, passive step up transformer types, to ESL high voltage driving amplifiers as tubeor transistor version up to complete units, consisting of ESL panels and driving items. The variety of types is allowing the DIY project to combine a product palette which is able to fit fully all wishes, dreams and needs of an enthusiastic ESL DIYer. The driving units are available as fully assembled parts or as DIY kits for people with good knowledge in electronics and soldering. They can be used either for driving the Shackman ESL panels or for any other appropriate ESL speaker including ESL head-phones. Also complete loudspeakers as two-way hybrids are available. The applied bass driver is always a Podszus-Görlich TT200/25 in either a closed box system (SymphonicA) or, as 2020/37 version, in a bass horn cabinet (Römer ESL-Horn) © reromanus.net 7 Shackman-reromanus Shackman ESL Types nomenclatura by band width As ESL types concerning the frequency range, there are the MHT-type and the WR-type. The first is a tweeter working down to 1kHz with recommended xover at 1,5 kHz, the latter is a mid-tweeter working down to 400Hz, with recommended xover of 700 Hz for full SPLmax . Shackman panels can be stacked up to five panels per stack, which results in a doubling of Pmax and lowering Fx to half an octave per unit. Also THD is affected in a potential region. Additionally the five units can be internally connected following the Barker Code for vertical line arrays. So listed by types there are for example WR-P, and WR-V, MHT-P, MHT-T, MHT-P Shackman ESL types nomenclatura by mechanical construction principles The original standard version is the classical type with metal stators, as used since the early 40s and known under the brand of Dynastat with the panel type MHT85. This type is obsolete and is only sold as long as stock lasts. The new modern type is called the ESLAB. This type is built with CNC produced PCB card board material, earlier introduced by Bowers + Wilkins and QUAD. There is the Standard version and the elitary ESLAB BARKER version. The latter is a special high end solution using the Barker Code as special line source application in radar technology for improving the directional pattern of the ESL. The stators are multiply segmented and driven separately following the Barker Code laws. Shackman ESL types nomenclatura by appplied electrical construction principles As ESL electro-acoustical construction principle there is generally used the standard Constant Charge (CC) solution. But since a couple of years there is also the Inverted (Inv) type available for the ESLAB type panels, corresponding to a single-ended solution of amplification, hence resulting in successfully reducing distortion and enhancing sensivity/SPL. Shackman products by different ESL driving types As driving unit types concerning driving principle there are the UE-type (transformer), the V-Type (valve/tube) and the T-Type (transistor). The first one is a standard passive step-up transformer version, the second is an active tube amplifier solution, where there are the WR-version (wide range, working down to 100 Hz, 4 x EL84, 2 x ECC83) and the MHT-version (working down to 500Hz, 2 x EL84, © reromanus.net 8 Shackman-reromanus 1 x ECC83).
