FRIENDS who met at a local football club are cycling
400 miles across four countries for an ex-teammate who
has cancer.
Sam Canty, Joe Weston and Matt Wells — three of
Matt Bates’ close mates — are riding from Central Ajax
Football Club, in Warwick, to Ajax Amsterdam Football
Club, in the Netherlands, after the 26-year-old was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer.
The ride — dubbed Ajax To Ajax — will begin on
Easter Monday, 28th March, after a football match at the
Hampton Road club and ends six days later at Ajax’s
Dutch League game with Zwolle.
Along the way, the trio will also stop off at Wembley
to watch England take on the Netherlands in a Euro
2016 warm-up match.
Matt, from Whitnash, had successful surgery in
October 2014 to remove an 11cm tumour from his right
kidney as well as 11 lymph nodes.
However, six months later the cancer returned and has
since spread to his lung, spine and adrenal gland. He is
currently undergoing immunotherapy treatment called
IL-2 in Manchester.
The football match will kick off at 11am and be open
to the public with food and refreshments available,
before the trio will set off on the ride with the help of
three other friends in a support vehicle.
They are aiming to keep people up to date on their
travels via their Twitter account — @AjaxtoAjaxCycle — and Facebook page — Ajax to Ajax Cycle.
Sam, 27, said: “We wanted to fundraise in a way that
was memorable and special to everyone involved. It was
the club that brought us all together again when we
started coaching, so revolving the ride around Ajax
seemed like an obvious decision.”
Matt, a former journalist, who spent a short time
working at the Stratford Midweek and Herald, added:
“We will never stop looking for ways to beat my
cancer — whether that be in the UK or abroad — and
will try anything that can give me a half a chance.
“To have the financial support to make that possible
means a lot to both me and my family. Any money left
over at the end of my treatment will be given to charity.”

FOURTEEN dogs were microchipped for free at a recent
event at Wellesbourne Methodist Church. It was hosted
by Stratford’s dog warden Lisa Parkes, rural crime coordinator Lucy Lambert and the village’s PCSOs.
Trampoline
arena set to
create 70
new jobs
SEVENTY jobs will be created when a trampoline arena opens in Warwick later this year.
Jump In in Hermes Close on Tachbrook Park is the
company’s second site, and is expected to open in May.
The first opened in Slough last year with two more set
to open elsewhere in the country in the coming year.
As well as the trampolines for 150 people, the centre
will have party and conference facilities.
Trampoline parks have been described as the latest phenomenon to hit the UK.
Warwick’s will have 3D Dodgeball, a kids’ zone, foam
pits, tumble tracks, and a huge main court where people
can jump freely between interconnected trampolines, and
literally bounce off the walls.
Gavin Lucas, Jump In’s chief executive officer, said:
“Jumping is great fun and happens to be great for your

This picture was taken last Thursday afternoon and shows a bird’s eye view
of the full extent of the flooding that unexpectedly hit Stratford last week. It
was taken by Simon Blinkhorne, from Stratford, using a quadcopter, and
shows the boat club, cricket club, bowls club and much of the Rec and the
children’s play area under several metres of water as the Avon peaked at

AN elderly woman
had to be rescued
from her caravan on
the banks of the River
Avon in Stratford last
Thursday evening as flash
floods submerged parts of
the district.
Firefighters were called
to the caravan in Tiddington where the home of
the woman in her 80s was
surrounded by rising
water.
A specialist boat crew
was called in to pluck her
to safety. She was checked
by paramedics and booked
into a local hotel.
River levels returned to
normal over the weekend
following Tuesday night’s
heavy rain, although Stratford Racecourse had to
cancel yesterday’s preCheltenham race day.

likely to get the go ahead

advised by planning officers to approve plans for

TOMMY the tortoise was the special guest at Tysoe
Methodist Church’s third ‘Messy Church’.
He attracted a gathering of around 30 people to an
afternoon of spring-themed crafts, Mother’s Day gift
making, a talk from a local vet and outdoor play time in
the forest school at Winchcombe Farm Day Nursery in
Upper Tysoe.
The Messy Churches have been a huge success in the
village and have been organised by church and community worker Tanita Robson.
The Reverend Dawn Saunders said: “Our Messy
Churches have been very well received and we are
hoping to run at least four every year — one in each
season of the year.
“It is for everyone — young and old alike — and it’s
good to see so many people from the local community
joining us for an afternoon of messy play, fun and worship.”
Ambulance service
jobs under threat
WEST Midlands Ambulance Service has conceded
that it may have to cut staff to deal with financial
pressures it is facing.
In 2015/16 the service has been required to find
£8.8million in savings and in 2016/17 it will need
to save a further £11.7million from its budget.
No frontline staff will be affected, but compulsory redundancies elsewhere could not be ruled
out, said Chief Executive, Anthony Marsh.
He added: “We will operate within the financial
restrictions placed upon us and planning is taking
place to ensure patients continue to receive the
high standards of service we are known for.”
Mr Marsh said that consultations were
underway with trade unions.

This year’s Swimathon will take
place this weekend, 18th to 20th
March, as part of this year’s Sport
Relief.
Since being established in 1986
more than £40million has been raised
for charitable causes, with Sport
Relief the official charity partner for
2016.

Centre are offering a range of distances and challenges to suit swimmers of all fitness levels.
Individuals can choose from 1.5k,
2.5k or 5k distances. There are also
team challenge distances of 1.5k and
5k. Teams can split the distance however they choose to cater for the
strongest and weakest swimmers in
the squad.

Stratford’s new theatre to host Easter musical, Godspell
MUSICAL lovers look set to enjoy a heavenly dose of
song and dance this Easter when Stratford Musical
Theatre Company performs the hit show Godspell at
the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new studio theatre at The Other Place.
This modern twist on a timeless tale portrays Jesus’
teachings of kindness, love and tolerance using
inspiring parables from the Gospel of Matthew.
Packed with energetic games and storytelling techniques, the 13-strong cast will sing and dance their
way through Jesus’ life, up until his moving crucifixion.
This unique musical, composed by multi-award
winner Stephen Schwartz, features an eclectic mix of
songs, including Day by Day, Save the People and
Bless the Lord
The new theatre features two new rehearsal rooms, research
space and home to RSC’s 30,000-piece costume store.
It coincides with the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
Stratford Musical Theatre Company’s (SMTC) Godspell will be one of the first performances at the RSC’s
new 200-seat studio theatre, situated inside The
Other Place.
SMTC Chairman, Phil Ingle, said: “We feel privileged to produce
this show this Easter in an exciting new venue, and with such a
talented cast of existing and new members.
“This production will capture the original spirit of this important
musical, and, we hope, capture the hearts of our audience too.”
Directed by Alan Gill and choreographed by Julie BedlowHoward, with musical direction from Gary Lewis, Godspell will
run from Tuesday, 29th March, until Saturday, 2nd April.
Performances are at 7.30pm, with a matinee performance on
2nd April, at 2.30pm.

WHAT comes to mind when you think of
Easter? Church? Bunnies? Eggs?
You might find it strange that chickens' offspring have come to be associated with
the resurrection of Christ, but it actually
makes sense.
People have been celebrating spring and
the renewal of the seasons with eggs for
thousands of years, long before Christianity was an organised religion.
Eggs symbolise fertility and new life, and
the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians
and Persians all used dyed eggs in their
spring celebrations. It was only natural
that the tradition be incorporated into the
Christian holiday, which also focuses on
rebirth and renewal.
It's impossible to say who invented the
chocolate egg, but these confections
started appearing in France and Germany
in the early 19th century. The first were
solid dark chocolate eggs that tasted
grainy, coarse and bitter.
The truth is, chocolate wasn't really all that
great back then. It contained around 50
per cent fat, which made it incredibly hard
to digest.
Confectioners were forced to add various
starches and other ingredients to make
chocolate more palatable. In 1866, however, the Cadbury chocolate company
imported a revolutionary press that cut out
half the candy's fat content, making a
smoother, better-tasting form of dark
chocolate.
The press also allowed the company to
easily mould its chocolate. In 1875, Cadbury released its first line of chocolate
Easter eggs, which were hollow and filled
with sugared almonds.
It wasn't long before Cadbury's business
was booming, and by 1893, the company
had 19 different Easter patents — a lot in
those days! Easter production went into
overdrive in 1905, when Cadbury introduced milk chocolate Easter eggs.
To say they were successful would be an
understatement: The majority of chocolate
Easter eggs sold today are made from
milk chocolate.
Cadbury's eggs are still incredibly popular, but the confectioner hardly has a universal hold on the market. Today, you can
get chocolate eggs of all kinds from
countless companies, whether you like
them solid, hollow or filled with anything
from flavoured crème to expensive,
gourmet chocolate candies.
The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. Christians remember that
Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from
the dead. This miracle showed that life
could win over death.
For Christians the egg is a symbol of
Jesus' resurrection, as when they are
cracked open they stand for the empty
tomb. Eggs were always thought to be
special because although they do not
seem alive, they have life within them
especially at springtime when chicks
hatch out.
Long ago people gave gifts of eggs
carved from wood or precious stones. The
first sweet eggs that were eaten were
made in the last 100 years from sugar or
marzipan. Since then chocolate eggs
have become popular and these are
given on Easter Sunday.
In some countries parents tell their children the Easter Hare or Bunny has hidden
chocolate eggs and they race to find them
round the house or garden. Children in
other countries decorate hard-boiled
eggs at Easter time by painting or dyeing
them.
DID YOU KNOW? The word Easter is derived from Eostre, the name of a Saxon
goddess. Early Christians applied the name to the holiday in an effort to help
assimilate pagan converts into the new religion.

Not only are two new Leafcutter Ant Colonies on display in Arachnoland, but
the refurbishment of the Farm is now well under way.
There is now a new demonstration area in the Caterpillar Room where visitors
can see presentations of how pupae imports & exports are managed, see the
pupae gluing in preparation for the emerging cage, view seed and planting
presentations and take part in the popular Meet the Mini-Beast Handling
Sessions.

WHATEVER THE weather stroll through the wonderful world of an exotic
rainforest: a lush landscape of tropical blossom surrounding splashing
waterfalls and fish-filled pools.
Enjoy the unique pleasure of watching hundreds of the world's most spectacular and colourful butterflies
flying all around. You can see them feeding and flying in a wonderful tropical environment.
Our landscaped tropical greenhouse is the largest tropical butterfly display in the UK! Throughout the
year we have over 250 different species of tropical butterfly from 20 different countries. We have 1,500
free flying individual butterflies (sometimes it’s a few more, sometimes a few less).
We don't just have butterflies in the flight area! There are also a huge selection of tropical plants, not just
to make it look lovely but to feed the butterflies. Lantana is one of the most important nectar plants we
have in the butterfly farm with its heads of tightly packed blossoms rich in sugary nectar. In Asia where
Lantana comes form it is considered a weed!
Watch out ! Iguanas about
KEEP YOUR eyes peeled for our Iguana. He is a green
Iguana from South America, he was donated to us
about 6 years ago after becoming to big to be a pet. He
likes to hide up high in the trees and on top of the
heater where he can keep an eye on things.
There are quite a few birds in the flight area, they have all been chosen because
none of them are insectivorous-they like to eat seeds and fruit. We have colourful
Budgerigars, two Indian Ring Necked Parakeets, a couple of African Mousebirds, and some Chinese
Painted Quail that walk around on the floor, to name but a few.
We welcome the latest additions to the birds of the Stratford Butterfly Farm,
Mousebirds that originate in Africa. You will see these pretty birds, with their
distinctive hairstyles, flying around and playing in the trees throughout the
Flight Area.

Shakespeare Week – 14-20 March
There are lots of family activities during Shakespeare
Week – an annual national celebration giving primary school children a great first encounter with
Shakespeare. Families are invited to drop in to the
marquee at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage (*admission
applies) from 15th – 17th March between 10.00am3.00pm, where you can take part in Shakespeare and
nature-themed activities - create your own leaf
mobiles, brass rubbings and miniature cottage gardens. Also there will be free drop-in sessions after
school at the Shakespeare Centre from 3.30-5.30pm.

PDO is a material commonly used as a dissolvable surgical stitch, but when
injected in the skin of the face, neck and décolleté it stimulates the body
to naturally produce collagen thereby tightening and rejuvenating the skin.
The PDO threads are injected using fine acupuncture needles that act as a
conductor for the thread, and the stitches themselves dissolve away over several
months producing a network of collagen improving the look, lift and hold.
4D PDO threads have added anchors on them, which allows the skin to be pulled
back thereby immediately lifting the tissues, improving jowls and laxity. They are
also injected using cannulas, which limit swelling and bruising.

‘Drink-drive limit
must be lowered’
ROAD safety and breakdown organisation
GEM Motoring Assist says the UK Government must now accept that the drink drive
limit in England and Wales is too high.
GEM calls for an immediate commitment
to reducing the limit, combined with
increased police activity to enforce the law.
The demand follows the publication last
week of the new Fit to Drive report by the
Parliamentary Advisory Committee for
Transport Safety, showing that alcohol
impairment continues to be a major contributory factor to crashes.
Around 4.5 fatal collisions every week in
2013 (the most recent figures available)
were related to drink-driving.
GEM chief executive, David Williams,
MBE said: “It’s believed that reducing the
limit from 80mg/100ml to 50mg/100ml
would save around 25 lives and 95 serious
injuries every year. Additionally, there is
excellent technology available to make
simple, effective roadside breath tests a
reality. After all, it is now 11 years since
Parliament made provision for roadside evidential breath-testing, which would greatly
increase the number of tests carried out by
police officers, and reduce the vast burden
of paperwork which accompanies every
positive breath test.
“Drink driving remains a significant
threat to the safety of all road users, but
there are effective steps to help reduce this
threat. Reducing the drink drive limit
should be the number one priority, as this
would bring clear and significant road
safety benefits.
“Supporting this should be modern
alcohol testing equipment that helps police
officers do their job more efficiently.
“The government needs to take a strong
lead to help prevent the unnecessary death,
injury and misery that’s too often a consequence of someone’s irresponsible decision
to get behind the wheel after drinking
alcohol.”

THE classic motoring clubs attending last
weekend’s NEC Restoration and Classic Car
Show gave visitors more than just some shiny cars
to look at as the 120 clubs exhibiting offered
demonstrations and live working on their stands at
Birmingham’s NEC.
With 700 cars on display,
in all states of repair —
from barn find to concours — there was plenty of
inspiration for enthusiasts,
as well as hands-on advice
from specialist restorers and
industry experts.
Motoring
celebrities
including Wheeler Dealers’

Cars’ Ant Anstead; the

Perry
McCarthy, and BBC Radio

The Lancaster Insurance
Pride of Ownership saw a
close battle between the 20
finalists selected from
around 80 applicants.
An emotional Stuart
Turp, pictured on opposite
page, lifted the trophy as
showgoers voted his gold
coloured 1969 Ford Capri
the winner, with Jim Scott’s
1966 Cortina taking second
place and Martin Healey’s
1964 Saab 96 2-Stroke in
third.
It was a blue 1989 Austin
Metro City owned by James
Cribb that won the Golden
Spanner award and the title
of Restorer of the Year.
James’ late wife bought the
car back in 1995 as her first
car and James had lovingly

But it wasn’t just the
pristine cars winning
awards. Dave Whiting’s
1953 Aston Martin DB2
saloon was voted the
crowd’s favourite barn find
out of the 25 diverse cars
on display.
Silverstone
Auctions
secured more high prices in
its sale at the show on
Sunday, with 69 per cent of
the cars on offer successfully hammered away for a
total sales figure of
£1.5million.
One of the earliest Land
Rovers produced, a 1948
Series One Chassis #149,
sold for £47,250, more than
£20,000 over its lower estimate, and the highest price
for a Series One in recent
years.
A historically-important
and very rare car, a 1950
Land Rover Series I Station
Wagon with coachwork by
Tickford, sold for £38,250,
a world record price.

Town punished

convert chances
STRATFORD Town manager Carl Adams
believes his side were punished for failing to
convert their chances against Weymouth on Saturday.
Ben Thomson struck twice as Weymouth came from
behind to claim a 2-1 win at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
Despite highlighting the positives from the display,
Adams was ultimately left disappointed with his side’s
inability to convert their opportunities into goals.
“We got punished for our missed chances,” he said.
“We had enough to have won three games let alone
one, and although we put on a good performance we
have come away with nothing to show for it.
“They were more clinical in their finishing and that is
what won the game.
“It’s a hard one to take, but we will go again against
Hitchin on Tuesday.”
Town made a lively start and went ahead in the fifth
minute. Jamie Sheldon was upended by Dean Evans in
the area and Richard Gregory thumped the subsequent
spot-kick past the Weymouth goalkeeper and playermanager Jason Matthews.
The visitors missed a string of chances to double their
lead and Weymouth made them pay on 62 minutes when
they worked the ball in from the left and Ben Thomson
stabbed it past Andy Kemp from close in.
And in the 76th minute Thomson grabbed the winner
when Town failed to deal with a corner from the left and
the Weymouth striker drilled the loose ball into the net
from eight yards out.
Stratford have now taken only three points from their
last nine games.
Town take on fourth-placed Hitchin at the DCS Stadium on Tuesday night before another home game
against play-off hopefuls Hungerford Town this Saturday.
