FH-DCE Newsletter
2016 -2 FH-DCE Newsletter ‘ Ulf Jensen Federation Harley-Davidson Clubs FH-DCE Newsletter March 2016 Europe 3/19/2016 At the 2015 President Meeting I've learned...... Why Europe is so complicated. FH-DCE. An organization to love –but sometimes hard to understand. Last week I had a letter from Ron, Secretary of H-DC Twente, writing some wise words: Hi Ulf, Is there some news about this issue between de H-DC Turkey and the French Clubs? Are they on speaking terms now? I hope so! Because we (H-DCT Twente) are fully convinced that the Turkish brothers must join the Federation. Otherwise we have the same non-discussion as last year Greetz Ron This letter is representative about the response I today frequently receive from FH-DCE members and the politic in Europe is more and more turning the FH-DCE into a closed society. Some European countries now again wish to build walls to close Europe and some clubs in the Federation have a wish to build a wall around ourselves even if it means that they are putting our good working rules to the side. But undermining hate and prejudice does not always work. The 2015 President meeting is a clear proof of this. But it is quite a difference running a federation. Sorry to say there are obvious similarities between those to represent European countries today and the debate in FH-DCE. Mostly when it comes to the fact of using other members anger and hate against other groups of Harley riders. We in the FH-DCE are not politicians and would never lower ourselves to the fact of build a wall around our organization, and mostly not upon non-valid reasons as on the last Presidents meeting. You might think that I brought this up in the last Newsletter already but for me as Secretary and the person who can see the Federation in one whole perspective and, perhaps mostly, the person that you have put in charge to see that you follow your own written rules and statues to avoid chaos, this is very important. FH-DCE Newsletter March 2016 Today a small chaos is to be found in our European Harley federation and many questions are around from the member clubs today. What will happen if Europe is falling apart? What will happen if England goes out of the European Union? Can we (the English, Scottish, and Ireland) club still be members of the federation? What happens if the Federation says no to the UK can we in Norway and Switzerland still be members? What is happening today in the FH-DCE can easily split up the federation in different ways. We do not need a stronger federation but a more united one and it is only the presidents of the FH-DCE who have the ability to point out the direction that is best for the federation. The good co-operation has just stopped and (as I see this) there are nobody left at the company who now knows the agreement that exists between Harley-Davidson and the FH-DCE. Nigel has done his best to introduce us to the new management and my calls are left unattended with no answer. But I hope to share some good news with you in the next newsletter. Hippy Chris, President HDRCGB on Tour Hi everyone I was just talking to some friends the other day about a road trip I did a few years ago to Norway/Sweden [my 2 favourite biking countries] It all started when I was looking at a Winter Harleyquin [HDRCGB,club magazine] back in 2004 and I saw a flyer for the Swedish clubs 35th International rally at Mora. Well I got the old google map up and checked out the location I could see a plan coming together for a nice little roadtrip.I spoke to my other half who liked the idea and that was it, we were going. Well another couple we know asked if they could tag along on our road trip, so know there was 4 of us. Well we booked our ferries through Wurzel our esteemed touring secretary who got us %10 discounts through our club's discount scheme with DFDS. Day 1 Well the trip started at our usual meeting point Tebay services, just off the M6 in Cumbria northwest England. There was myself and my other half on a 99 Twincam Dyna and Carl and Sue on a 2004 Night train. After breakfast we set off for the city of Newcastle and the ferry port of North shields crossing the Pennines via the A66 and up the A1 and the Tyne Tunnel. Once on board our ship to Kristiansand in Norway, we settled down to a nice meal and a pleasant evening in the bar looking forward to our Road trip. We had chosen to go to Mora via the western side of the Hardangervidda national park and then to head east towards Sweden. Day 2 Well after a nice breakfast we docked at the port of Kristiansand in glorious weather on the Tuesday FH-DCE Newsletter March 2016 before the rally. We joined the other bikes waiting to clear customs only for us to be stopped and asked what were we doing in Norway, where were we going and what club did we belong to. I replied "were going to the Swedish International Rally and were in the Riders club of Great Britain" well that seemed to do the trick we were let in for a moment I thought I was going to have to give him some cash lol. We set off on route 9, the road was fantastic, the weather was great, the sun was shining in my face, you could smell the pine trees, I ‘am on Holiday, I ‘am on my Harley, things don’t get much better in life. We stopped at Haukeli for a lunchtime coffee before following the signs for Odda which is on the Hardangerfjord. We had been warned the Norway is not only the home of the Trolls but also the home of the Tunnel and boy did we go through some long ones. Will filled with petrol at Odda and bought a few beers, boy is Norway expensive but hey I ‘am on m y Holidays and I ‘am rather found to a beer or 2. We found a great campsite about 12km north of Odda at a little place called Loftus, were we hired a Hutte [small wooden cabins] there on every campsite in Norway and Sweden and they’re very good value. We rode down to a little restaurant and had a lovely meal, I asked for a beer only to be told by the girl you can't drink you’re driving, we I only ever have 1 beer when driving but the limit in Scandinavia is a lot lower than the uk , you have been warned., so it was back to the Huttes and get the beers out and sit in the sunshine looking across the Fjord , good company, good beer, hell we were in Heaven. Day 3 Rest day Carl has a few medical issues so it was decided before the holiday that we would a rest day on the Wednesday, well the weather was fantastic in fact maybe a touch to hot. We decided to ride back to Odda have a walk up to the glazier ,we Karen and myself got almost to the top before my knee started playing up. Carl and Sue had waited half way up, did I say it was hot, bloody hot. We got back down the mountain when I decided I wanted to have a drink out of a river that had come straight off a glazier. It tasted great. I decided that me and carl should have a paddle in the river and for Karen to photograph us, when we got back ,Karen’s photo showed me and carl stood side by FH-DCE Newsletter March 2016 side but not showing us in the river, We had a pizza in Odda before heading back to Loftus for a few more beers outside our Hutte. Day 4 Thursday or should I say Thor's day seeing as were in Norway We woke up to the sound of rain, the sort of rain that you get in the north of England i.e. it was pissing down . Carl led the way, they had wanted to visit the valley of the Trolls, I had said before the trip I don’t care where we go so long as we get to the rally by lunchtime Friday to watch the bikes coming in. Well we rode and we rode, you could not see a thing it was foggy all day and the rain was relentless. I saw a sign for Jotunheinen national park; I was getting a little worried as we seemed to be way of track. Eventually I pulled over this was about 6pm and I said, ”I don’t care what it costs I ‘am stopping at the next hotel as I was piss wet through" Well we came across an oasis a skying hotel, it was not cheap but the girl who ran it was very friendly, she was quite dark for a Norwegian, turns out she was German from Celle, I told her I use to live in Hannover. Well after a nice warm shower, a meal and a beer in hand I decided to have a look at my map, were were miles away from the rally, so I was not too happy. Day 5 I’m awake early, I wanted to get the others motivated and away as soon as we could. Well we rode and were rode through vagamo, otta, koppang, crossing into Sweden near Drevsjo, it was warm again and thankfully dry but we seemed to be riding all the time with little time for stops. Well lunchtime passed, I was not going to get to the rally on time, the afternoon turned into early evening, Sue and Carl wanted to stop at a Hutte, I just sain.i'am going to the rally, I held it at a steady speed arriving at 10pm, 10 hours late so I was not too happy, there was no food everything had been sold, so after putting my tent up what I needed most was a beer. Well the beer has never tasted as good, after 30 mins I was being invited to put our tents up in this couples garden in Stockholm after the rally, friendly people these Vikings. FH-DCE Newsletter March 2016 Day 6 I’m a little tired so we don’t go on the ride out, we just wander into town, have a bite to eat and watch the world go by talking about bikes. Sat night we end up getting pissed with 3 Swedish couples one of the guys turns out to be Norwegian, I thank him for the Christmas Tree, well I ‘am suddenly his best friend, Norwegians have long memories and the always send a Christmas Tree to Britain every year. Sunday Day 6 The rally is over and it’s always a little sad to see a little community of friends depart. We decide to spend another day on site, so we go for a ride around the Lake, we stop off at a museum, how Scandinavian farmers use to live 200 years ago, they have a saw dust toilet so I decide it would be only right and fitting to try the toilet out, I know a little too much information but I felt a whole lot better afterwards lol. We popped into Mora for another pizza and a beer before having an early night as we hoped to head to Stockholm in the morning and I wanted to try and find Anette to see if she would be my dancing queen, well I’ve always had a thing for blondes, must be why I picked my other half her being blonde Hippy Chris President HDRCGB End of part 1.
