CONVENTIONAL WISDOM SAYS: ANY STUDENT WILLING TO WORK HARD.
THE TRUTH: Students from low-income backgrounds face a daunting challenge. Nationally, just 22% enroll in 4-year colleges and universities and just 14% graduate with
degrees. Even high-achievers graduate at half the rate of more affluent peers.
At Breakthrough Miami, we say “no way.” Here, motivated students learn how to break
through the racial, cultural and economic barriers to a college education…so they can
realize their most ambitious goals in life.
At Breakthrough Miami, 92% of the Class of 2015 enrolled in 4-year college and universities.
WHAT IS BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI?
An 8-year, tuition-free enrichment program that features a 6-week Summer Institute and
school-year Saturdays of rigorous academics, stimulating electives, athletics, mentoring and
fun, led by outstanding high-school seniors and college students who serve as teachers,
mentors and role models.
WHO IS BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI? • Nearly 1,200 Scholars from under-resourced communities across Miami-Dade
• 96 outstanding high-school and college Teaching Fellows
• And hundreds of visionaries — donors, volunteers, educational leaders and families ­— who
want to close the gap in educational opportunity for the next generation.
Together, we have been changing the story in Miami-Dade County for 25 years. . . Because any student willing to work hard really DOES deserve a college degree.

students-teaching-students model to ensure that motivated,
under-resourced middle-school students have access to excellent

“You have to sacrifice for what you want to be,” says Priya,
whose family is from Trinidad and India. She’s aiming for
a career in law, as a prosecutor and a judge. “I don’t think
I would be where I am right now,” without
Breakthrough’s AmeriCorps mentors, in
particular. “They are helping us so much, giving us
inspiration to dream and achieve… It’s the best
thing to have.”

Cachay joined the program as a 6th grader, and, with the help of Breakthrough,
entered Carrollton a year later. She enjoys reading and writing and studies
Chinese. She also loves singing in her church choir. Through dedication of her
mother, the whole family has been set on an upward trajectory. Breakthrough
helped Cachay get an internship at Mercy Hospital’s maternity ward, fueling her
ambition to become a neonatal surgeon. “At Breakthrough, you’re not another
number, you are YOU! Breakthrough has a careful and precise way of singling out
every child’s weakness, strengthening it by tailoring their summer and nurturing
their success, placing them in environments that suit their needs and dreams.”

BREAKTHROUGH MIAMI @25
Breakthrough Miami is the largest of 25 affiliates that are associated with the San
Francisco-based Breakthrough Collaborative, founded as Summerbridge in 1978. The
original program model provided summer enrichment for middle-school students from
low-performing schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods, with the goal of preparing them
to enter college-prep high schools and enroll in college. Summerbridge Miami was launched
at Ransom Everglades School in 1991 with 40 students. Over the years, school-year Saturdays
programs and college-access readiness services for high school students were added. In 2007,
the program, rebranded as Breakthrough Miami, received nearly $5 million in funding from
the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Children’s Trust, to expand to new sites. Breakthrough Miami’s five sites currently serve nearly 1,200 students attending more than
100 schools across Miami-Dade County, from Miami Gardens to Homestead, from Liberty City
to Hialeah.
