Dear Friend,
What you have in your hands represents a year of neighbors helping neighbors in Dane County.
The statistics in this annual report reflect the lived experience of real people who, when suffering the
effects of poverty, got a little help through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, the work of a great staff
and, most importantly, the generosity of people like you.
It may be hard to visualize all those who benefited from receiving more than $2.6 million in assistance
from us last year. But I invite you to stretch your imagination even further to see the good the Society of
St. Vincent de Paul has done during the 90 years it has been at work here in Madison.
It was in 1925 that a group of concerned Madisonians invited members of the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul from Milwaukee to come and help them organize in two Catholic parishes, Holy Redeemer and St.
Bernard. Since those early years, Madison has been blessed with many dedicated St. Vincent de Paul
members, volunteers and supporters – now mostly forgotten – who were good friends of the poor. It was the president of the Society in Milwaukee, Val Blatz (of the beer-brewing family), who came to
Madison to help us start a store just after the Great Depression. Mathias Karls was one of those
dedicated early local members to whom we owe a great debt of gratitude. He owned a market on
Williamson Street and was completely committed to the success of our thrift store from its beginning.
Matt managed to talk the Milwaukee people into a $1,000 gift when we eventually purchased a
storefront on Baldwin Street. That space is still part of what long ago became our Willy Street store. Hundreds of dedicated volunteers have provided us a rich history. We have had great leadership from
presidents such as Franz Haas, who during the time he served was also Dane County sheriff. Many of us
remember John Keyes, who founded our Port St. Vincent de Paul in 1977. Fondly called the “Mayor of
the East Side,” John had a tremendous heart for the poor. When women were finally “allowed” to join
the Society in the 1970s, Elizabeth Erbe was there, as were John Keyes’ sisters Alice and Shelly. Often
the Society struggled just like the people we serve. Longtime member Norb Zeier recounted to me a day
when the next week’s payroll was unfunded and members made personal loans just to pay store staff.
These folks from our past couldn’t have imagined that St. Vincent de PaulMadison would someday operate a charitable pharmacy, housing programs
for men and women, a grocery-store-like food pantry and seven thrift
stores. Unfortunately, poverty is not a thing of the past here. Needs may
change, but it seems that they also continue to increase as our community
grows. Our challenge is to keep a strong safety net in place to assist our
neighbors when they find themselves struggling with poverty. Thank you for participating in our continuing effort to meet the needs of
people today. Please continue to give us the support required for us to build
on this local history of care and compassion for our neighbors in need.

A history of serving in hope
S
ince 1925, members of the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul in Madison,
Wis., have been offering direct, personto-person help to their neighbors struggling with poverty and other forms of
suffering. Beginning at two of the city’s
Catholic parishes 90 years ago, the local
work of our international Society had
its roots in neighbors organizing to help
their neighbors in need.
In an account he wrote years ago, late
local member Norbert Zeier offered a
feel for the Society’s hope-filled beginning efforts here in Madison:
“In those early days one requirement
of the meeting (of local Society members) called for a report from the ‘keeper
of the clothes room.’ Clothing and other
donations were stored in homes or parish storerooms. As these supplies expanded and membership grew, it was
agreed that a central building was needed. This was 1936 in the depth of the

were few, and families were losing their

Through efforts of early members motivated to offer neighbors in need what
help they could, a Madison thrift store
was opened in 1941. The store supplied
revenue to support the Society’s charitable-aid mission through sale of donated goods, and it also allowed members
to give goods directly to people in need.

I
n 2005 we moved what had been
Dane County’s busiest food pantry
from the 800 square feet it occupied in
our Williamson Street complex to a former auto-radiator repair shop on Culmen Street. There, ours became the
first local pantry to implement a “customer-choice” model of operation. This
model honors the dignity of clients and
all involved in the distribution of free
food to people who need it. Our model
also helps minimize waste and accommodates personal and ethnic preferences by allowing clients to use “points”
to shop a store-like environment for
food their families prefer and will eat.
In 2009 – at 2033 Fish Hatchery Road,
adjacent to our temporary pantry – we
built the Center for Vincentian Charity
(above) to house our food pantry & service center. We then replaced the old
radiator shop with a well-equipped
warehouse to meet growing need for
food aid among local households experiencing the impacts of recession. As the
charts below show, creation of this large
facility dramatically expanded the value
of the help we’ve been able to deliver.
During 2014, we provided food valued
at a record $1.48 million to 21,205 Dane
County households. This helped feed
clients in 64,323 instances; among these
individuals were 28,211 children.
Our pantry serves 60 to 160 households per day five days a week. Six days
per week, our center offers hours for a
range of other aid we provide, as the
second chart below notes. Last year the
value of help we supplied (including
food) through our center exceeded
$2.41 million, and we assisted about
28,500 households with 81,000-plus individuals, including over 35,100 kids.

Prescription for hope
I
n April 2013 within our Madison service center, we opened the St. Vincent
de Paul Charitable Pharmacy. This licensed operation, overseen by an on-staff managing pharmacist and a technician/
trainer, greatly expanded our program of
medication aid – previously offered
through vouchers for a nearby pharmacy.
The first and still only such standalone charity pharmacy (i.e., one that’s
not health-network-affiliated) in Wisconsin, our facility engages dozens of
volunteers in helping serve low-income,
uninsured adults who can’t afford medications prescribed to treat their chronic
or acute health conditions. Faculty and
students from the UW-Madison School
of Pharmacy provide much assistance.
During 2014, in 556 patient encounters, our pharmacy dispensed 5,508 prescriptions, all free-of-charge. These
medications were purchased by us, donated by manufacturers, or provided by
the “Dispensary of Hope” program that
supplies charity pharmacies. The value
of medications our pharmacy gave away
during 2014 exceeded $358,000.

The work the Society of St. Vincent de Paul did last year to help Dane County neighbors in need was only possible
because thousands of individuals and organizations generously entrusted us with the resources we used to provide our aid.
We are grateful for this trust; it supported our members, volunteers and staff as they offered direct, person-to-person
assistance to local people struggling with poverty. Direct financial contributions and major in-kind donations are crucial to
our ability to conduct this mission of helping neighbors in need. St. Vincent de Paul receives only a small fraction of income
from grants; we are not a United Way agency and are not funded directly by either the government or the Church.

Volunteers & members offer time
V
oluntary efforts by several hundred dedicated individuals across
Dane County are the primary means
through which St. Vincent de Paul
serves local people in need. Supported
by a small core staff, members and
other volunteers provide the basicneeds aid we offer.
A nonprofit Catholic lay organization,
our Society works through members
joining together to grow spiritually by
providing person-to-person service to
people in need. Non-Catholic members
are welcome, and all our services are
provided without regard to the religious
beliefs, race or gender of those we assist.
In Dane County last year, 425 Vincentians – St. Vincent de Paul Society members and associate members – dedicated
more than 14,500 hours toward helping
their neighbors in need. Through 18
member groups, these Vincentians conducted hundreds of home visits with
people who sought assistance. Members
also volunteered at our food pantry and
in our other programs of service, and
they worked on special charity projects
in their parishes and neighborhoods.
In addition to our members, we rely on
the efforts of hundreds of other volunteers. At our Madison food pantry alone,
1,509 persons offered 26,600+ hours to
host, stock and perform intake duties.
Still others among our friends cooked at
Port St. Vincent, staffed our pharmacy,
tended our Lacy Garden, and served on

The work of members
St. Vincent de Paul member groups
are known as “conferences,” and 18 of
them – listed below with their locations
and founding dates – work on behalf of Dane County neighbors in need. Our
conferences conduct home visits and
other acts of charity. In addition to these
groups, our county-wide Youth Service
Council began engaging high school students in charitable action during 2014.

winners in November. Honoring dedicated
efforts to help neighbors in need, our awards
were made to (clockwise, from above): the
Oscar Mayer R.E.A.D.I. group, including

Dobbins, for leadership of our member group at

Hope through housing
E
ach night, about five dozen people
– men, women and children – call
housing provided by St. Vincent de Paul in Madison “home.” They reside either
in Port St. Vincent de Paul, our program
for low-income men, or St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton House, our program for
women and their kids.
Port St. Vincent de Paul provides a
mix of transitional, supportive and emergency housing for men. Founded by the
late John Keyes (depicted with his dog,
Oso, on this report’s cover) nearly four decades ago, the Port has ever since welcomed men who may have seen hope
reach a low ebb. At the Port, they find a
stable place that supports their capacity
to begin again. Staffed 24 hours a day by
a team led by Director Peter Lewandowski, the Port is home for as many as
38 men at a time. Residents’ needs for
meals, hygiene items, clothing, employment and service resources, case management, and more are addressed as
part of the Port’s program. Over the
course of 2014, 83 men were served
through Port St. Vincent.
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton House
program offers transitional housing for
women and their children. Founded in
1990 and named for the first canonized
U.S.-born Catholic saint, Seton House
assists women and kids transitioning
from homelessness. Some single women
transitioning from prison also take part
in the program. The women Seton
House serves work on plans for securing
permanent housing. Program participants reside in apartments in one of four
Seton House buildings and participate
in weekly activities focused on achieving goals. The women have frequent
contact with Elizabeth Hogensen, who
directs Seton House and offers support
that participants rely on for working toward their goals. Last year, the Seton
House program provided a place to call
home for 68 women and children.
During 2014, the Port and Seton
House supplied about 20,000 nights of
housing. As they are able, residents pay
program fees, but donors provided program subsidies exceeding $210,000.
Our first Seton House building (left) was acquired in 1989 and is now one of four that
serve as home for those taking part in our women’s transitional housing program. Started in
1977, Port St. Vincent (right) is Madison’s longest-serving current program of housing for
low-income men; the Port occupies what had been a railroad hotel in Madison’s isthmus.

Direct charity from seven stores
W
e hope our stores are one reason
you know us. Since we opened
our newest and now largest “St. Vinny’s”
store and drive-through donation center in a former Sun Prairie supermarket
late last year, we now operate seven great
thrift stores here in Dane County.
For many people, our stores are our
public face. We don’t run our stores for
their own sake, however. We run stores
selling donated goods to supply revenue
we rely on to conduct our mission of
providing charitable assistance to local
people in need. And we run stores to
help supply basic-goods assistance directly to the low-income people who
seek our help. This was true when we
opened our first Madison store in 1941.
It’s true today.
When visiting Dane County households seeking help, St. Vincent de Paul
members often encounter families living
in real poverty. Our stores are one way
members bring community resources to
bear on meeting basic needs. During
2014, we issued thousands of vouchers
local low-income households used at our
stores to obtain furniture and bedding
valued at more than $232,600. Items we
supplied included sofas, tables, chairs
and blankets, as well as new self-inflating
air mattresses and portable cribs.
Through vouchers used during 2014, we
also gave away directly from store inventory clothing valued at over $236,500.
We’ve been working lately to expand
our Odana Road store, and late last
year we added docks to the Processing
Center where we sort, price and distribute donated goods to our stores.
These moves offer customers even better shopping, of course, but our growth
also allows us to improve how we serve
neighbors in need – through more locations and with increased resources.

Since 1941, a store has been part of how we help
S
t. Vincent de Paul members started a
thrift store on Madison’s Baldwin
Street in 1941. That space, which would
become part of what is still our Williamson Street store, provided local Vincentians with: 1) revenue to support their
charitable-aid mission, 2) a place for
people of all means to shop for bargains,
and 3) a way of offering people in need
help in the form of basic goods. Those
roles are still served by our seven Dane
County stores today. The 1940s poster
at right sought donations of goods that
remain among our thrift stock-in-trade
(but please just put the magazines and
newspapers in your recycling bin).
“1970’s Vision” reads the art above, at the
corner of Few and Williamson streets in
Madison and just a block from our Willy Street
store. You can see from the mural at left how
our store has long been a neighborhood fixture.
