1932 complete parcel tag in lead sheath with extraordinary and exceptional franking of Kangaroos Third Watermark
Est $A
£1 grey & Small Multiple Watermark 2/- 10/- & £2 plus 1/- Large Lyrebird & Sydney Harbour Bridge 5/- green
(small surface blemish at upper-right) & 3d blue all neatly cancelled with 'REGISTERED/20JL32B/SYDNEY NSW'
cds, a paper address label to England affixed to the reverse with Sydney registration label & sender's handstamp
'GARRETT & DAVIDSON LTD'. The address label is rather aged & soiled but the tag & stamps are remarkably fine.
Probably the foremost Australian stamp usage item - we can't think of anything that comes even close - and
certainly the only postal "entire" known to us bearing this combination of the four highest available
denominations, or the "Five Bob Bridge" (presumably used here because the mailroom or GPO counter clerk was
temporarily out of 5/- Roos).
At this time, a "parcel" was limited to 11 lbs (pounds) in weight. As per the Post Office "Guide" (1936) an 11 lb parcel
to UK would have cost 6/4d. It is widely believed that above this weight, the letter rate had to be paid. However,
"letters" were restricted to 4½ lbs in weight. At this time, the only relevant airmail services were across Australia & the
accelerated Karachi-London sector, for which the rate per ounce was 2d Empire letter rate + 6d internal airmail + 1/Karachi-London. And this solves our rate conundrum: 1/8d x46 for a parcel weighing 2 lb 14oz + 1/6d for the
maximum postal insurance fee (for £48 to £50 value) + 3d registration = £3/18/3d.
The ACSC prices the Third Wmk £1 at $5000 on cover but the only envelope known to us sold at retail for $9000
several years ago. The 10/- & £2 are unpriced on cover. Kevin Nelson's large philatelic cover with the then only
recorded usage of the 10/- sold at the Prestige auction of 27/11/2010 for $8337. His 1932 unaddressed parcel tag
with the £2 & Third Wmk £1 grey - both crossed by a blue pencil line - sold for $13,225. The only articles known to us
with a 5/- Bridge are a few parcel labels, at least one of which is a fake. However, Gary Watson vividly remembers
c.1980 Rodney Perry - yes "Mr Usage"!! - wieldng a razor blade to excise a 5/- Bridge from an entire parcel wrapping,
which was then tossed in the bin!
Parcel tags such as this are almost always from gold bullion sendings to the United States. This is remarkable for
being addressed to England. It is also most likely to have been used for sending bullion. The addressee, Johnson
Matthey & Co, was based in Sheffield where they were suppliers to the many silver & jewellery manufacturers. In
Australia, Johnson Matthey is still a manufacturer of precious metal products. Garrett & Davidson were metallurgists
& engineers.
