In the Tenshō-Era (1573–1592), Rikyū, the Japanese tea master, was involved with the
construction of the Jurakudai palace in Kyōto and had a tile-maker, named Chōjirō, produce
hand-moulded tea bowls for a special tea ceremony that was his ideal. The resulting tea bowls
made by Chōjirō were the first raku ceramics, and later his son Jokei produced the Jurakudai
palace‘s roof tiles in this technique. For his works he was granted a seal that bore the Chinese
character for raku.[楽]. Raku means 'enjoyment', 'comfort' and is derived from Jurakudai, the
name of the palace.
Raku then became the name of his family that produced the wares. Both the name and the
ceramic style have been passed down through the family dynastie.
Raku is typically made from a stoneware clay body, bisque fired at 900 °C (1,650 °F) and
glaze fired (the final firing) between 800–1000 °C (1472–1832 °F)
It is raku’s unpredictable results and intense color that attract modern potters. These patterns
and color result from the harsh cooling process and the amount of oxygen that is allowed to
reach the pottery. Depending on what effect the artist wants, the pottery is cooled in a barrel
filled with combustible material, such as straw. The combustible material results in smoke,
which stains the unglazed portions of the pottery black. The amount of oxygen that is allowed
during the firing and cooling process affects the resulting color of the glaze and the amount of
crackle.

Pendant l’ère Tenshō (1573–1592), lors de la construction du palais Jurakudai a Kyōto, le
maître du thé japonais Rikyū ordonna à Chōjirō, l’artisan chargé de produire les tuiles, de créer
des bols à thé destinés à la cérémonie du thé. Chōjirō produisit des bols d‘aspect simple et
sans décoration, qui reflétaient les idéaux de beauté dans la simplicité. La technique crée par
Chōjirō donna vie aux premières céramiques Raku et plus tard, son fils, également potier et
perpétuant le travail de son père, construisit toutes les tuiles du toit du palais Jurakudai en
employant cette technique original. Pour son travail, le fils de Chōjirō reçut un sceau portant
l’idéogramme de Raku [楽]. Raku fut rajouté aussi à son nom de famille. Chōjirō devint ainsi le
fondateur de la poterie Raku et de la dynastie Raku qui est toujours active au Japon.
Raku peut être traduit par 'plaisir' ou 'confort'. Il représente la simplicité et la sobriété dans la
beauté mais aussi la tradition qui passe de génération en génération.
La technique Raku est une technique de fabrication en cuisson rapide. Les pièces émaillées
sont cuite à deux reprises à 800–1000 °C et elles sont sorties du four encore incandescent, à
environ 1000°C
La particularité de la poterie Raku réside dans ses couleurs intenses, obtenue grâce au
processus de la réduction d’oxygène, appelée réaction d‘oxydo-réduction. Ce processus
consiste à recouvrir les pièces de matières inflammables naturelles comme de la sciure de bois
ou de la paille afin d‘en empêcher la combustion en limitant l‘apport d‘oxygène au contact de
l‘émail en fusion. Au cours de cette phase d‘oxydo-réduction apparaissent les couleurs plus ou
moins métallisées, les craquelures ainsi que l‘effet d‘enfumage de la terre laissée brute qui
forment les principales caractéristiques de ce type de céramique.
