The Chapter meets at the Macon County Heritage Center
at The Historical Cowee School on the 3rd Saturday of

In Memoriam – Bob Saturn
SEBA is proud to announce a New Chapter. We have just
added the Macon County Chapter in Franklin, North
Carolina.
After working on some planning with some wonderful
folks this chapter is now official and we are very glad to
have it in the SEBA Family. We would like to thank the
new Chapter VP Jay Baird for his dedication in getting this
chapter started. Jay may be reached at 828-200-1932. And
a special thanks for the extra efforts of folks like John Lee
and Peter Mosco, because of them this chapter was well
SEBA has lost one of it's founding members. Robert
(Bob) F. Saturn, age 74, of Tucker, Georgia, passed
away on July 2, 2014. He is survived by his cherished
wife of over 50 years, Sandy, his daughters Wendy
Batchelor and Karen Saturn, his son-in-law Larry
Batchelor, his grandson Camden Batchelor, and his
sister Margaret Jensen as well as three nieces and a
nephew and his granddog Elly Mae. Bob served his
country through the United States Naval Reserve. Bob
was an avid banjo player and loved to jam with his
fellow bluegrass musicians. He was an active member of
the Southeastern Bluegrass Association since its
founding in 1984 and served as board chairman twice:
1998-2000 and 2006-2008. Bob will be missed by many
and our sincere regards go out to his family.

FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK
Boy time seems to just fly during the Bluegrass Season, I can't believe another month has passed.
We had several events this past month and I am so glad I got to spend some time at Raccoon Creek Bluegrass
Festival with some of my bluegrass family, Wendell, Rene', Ricky and all the others that make this one of the
best festivals in the state. The band lineup was great as always and the jamming was going on all over the
campground all weekend. This is one of the best kept festival grounds on the circuit and you can tell the folks
work hard to keep it that way. I also got to eat some of that mouth watering BBQ. What more can you ask for,
Great Music, Great Food and Fun for the whole family. If you haven't been to Raccoon Creek Bluegrass
Festival before you owe it to yourself to check it out. I know if you do you will be back for the next one.
And lets all come out and support your local SEBA Chapter. Always let the Chapter VP know you appreciate
the efforts that are made by them to keep the chapter and jams open for all to enjoy. And if you can offer
some of your time to help in any way that would be great also. Invite new folks to come out to the meetings
and jam some, they might even join our bluegrass family. Remember it's your chapter to, and it takes
everyone to keep it going.
In closing I would like to remind everyone that SEBA will be celebrating our 30th anniversary at our annual
meeting and I need your ideas to help the board make this a great event. Anything you can think of that
would help us in our planning would be helpful. Food suggestions, entertainment suggestions, location
suggestions “must have kitchen”, let us know what you think. Just put them in a email and send them to
[email protected] or you can mail them to our regular address SEBA PO BOX 20286
Atlanta,Ga. 30325 “attn Dan” or you may call me if you like 770-900-7472
I greatly value every members input and hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for your attention to this
matter.

Summer Camp is Not Just for Kids—New Ways to Be a
Better Musician and/or Songwriter - by Kim Fair
the best part for him is getting to perform the last night at the
famous Station Inn venue in a band with fellow students and
teachers.
If you really want to become a better musician that can happen
in many ways--listening to bluegrass on the radio and YouTube,
online classes, books, lessons with a teacher. Festivals often
have free workshops with professional artists. Alison Brown
said she learned to play banjo in the parking lot of a Shakeys'
Pizza Palace. Consider a bluegrass camp for your next
bluegrass educational adventure—maybe even make it a
vacation for the whole family.
https://stevekaufman.worldsecuresystems.com/home.html
As folks head out for their summer vacation, some bluegrass
players are headed to “Bluegrass Camp”. The Foundation for http://nashcamp.com/
Bluegrass Music (a nonprofit group that promotes the heritage
of bluegrass music) lists over 60 camps on their website
(http://bluegrassfoundation.org/ ). There's the Aloha Bluegrass
Camp in Hawaii, and others in British Columbia, Grass Valley,
CA, Queensland, Australia, Munich, Germany and Oxfordshire,
England-- to name a few. Some camps are for one day only
like the one held every other Saturday throughout the school
year at the International Bluegrass Music Museum ( IBMM) in
Owensboro, KY conducted by the Kentucky Bluegrass All
Stars for a minimum fee. Some are for three days but most are
for a week and have offerings for beginner musicians to
“master” classes with names you know—like Missy Raines,
Jim Hurst, Alan Bibey, etc. Bluegrass Boot Camp at the Bill
Monroe Music Park in southern Indiana is just for children but
most are open to any musician aged 10 or older. There are also
special camps for aspiring songwriters such as Wood Song
Farm Songwriter Retreat led by Louisa Branscom ( “Steel
Rails” and “Dear Sister” -an IBMA nominee for this year).
When talking with Atlanta Chapter SEBA members about their
bluegrass camp experiences—the most popular seem to be
Kaufman Kamp and NashCamp. Kaufman Kamp has been held
for the last sixteen years at Maryville College in Maryville, TN.
It costs $875 for tuition, room, and board for 5 days. They have
an all-star cast of instructors and many folks I talked to about it
have gone more than once and want to go back. In the evenings
the accomplished instructors give concerts which are
considered a real highlight. There is also a nice program for
non- musical spouses that come along, making it more like a
real vacation. SEBA member, Walter Stark, said, “I want to go
back”, but he and Dobro player Mike Hughes agreed -- “you
don't go for the food.”
NashCamp is held every summer in Nashville, TN.It costs $950
for the week but banjo week is cheaper. :) Here, too, you bring
your own linens like real camp but the food is prepared by a
gourmet chef according to the website. Fiddle player John
Hunsinger has attended this camp several times and says
SEBA member and fiddler John Hunsinger with his
souvenir t-shirt from Nash Camp.

Focus On Events
In the heat of Summer not a lot is going on locally but we are getting ready for the coming fall season. The Emory bar b q and
bluegrass festival is booked and ready to go with some fine local entertainment.Other things are in the cooker. There may be
some issue with the Stone Mountain bluegrass roots festival this year. I have been promised a definite answer by the end of the
month. I will let you know ASAP.
We are trying to get together a trip to our Ballplay Alabama chapter for a meeting. They have a campground with hookups. We
are thinking about going over and spending a night. It is not too far. If you think you might be interested let me know.
Steve's live music is doing a new bluegrass band and instrument contest with cash prizes on Tuesdays. Some of our folks are
going for it. Check it out.
I know Dan has written about Raccoon Creek but I have to add I think this was the best yet. I have not been around for all 40 but
have been to enough. The entertainment was outstanding and there were more jams than you could visit for a single tune. A huge
crowd of locals came for the shows and the campground was close to full. You need to put this one on the calendar for next year.
