blood. Summer marks the height of “trauma
season,” the busiest time of the year for emergency rooms and trauma centers nationwide.
The New York Blood Center is asking the
Harborfields community to remember your
neighbors and make plans to donate blood.
Your donation will help save up to three lives!
Please share this lifesaving gift. Call the Reference Desk to
make an appointment. For questions concerning medical eligibility, call 1-800-688-0900. To be eligible to donate, you must
bring a photo ID, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be between
16 - 75 (16 with parental permission, and anyone over 75 must
provide a doctor’s note), no tattoos for the past 12 months, eat
well and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating.

Join us as we listen to this old-time favorite nursery song
and other summer stories and create an Itsy Bitsy craft. Online

Spend 20-minutes reading to a teen volunteer or listening to
stories read by a teen volunteer. This is a great opportunity for
children to practice their reading in a comfortable setting with
the help of a teen volunteer or just enjoy listening to their favorite stories. Please call the Children’s Room to register.

“Super” Stories under the Stars
Join us as we read This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen. Take
home an art–literature–based craft inspired by this book. Registration begins on Wednesday, August 5th. Siblings are welcome.

Reading Club Bowling Party

least eight books in the 2015 Young Adult Summer Reading
Club are invited to celebrate their successful summer of reading at our end-of-the-summer bowling party at Larkfield Lanes
in East Northport. Meet us at the bowling alley at 4 PM for a
fun afternoon of pizza, soft drinks, goody bags, prizes and of

the benefit from experiencing the structure and timing of the
new test prior to entering their actual Test Day. Results from
the test will be e-mailed home three weeks following the
exam and will provide students with a comprehensive analysis of their performance on the test, detailing their individual

Photo Composition & Lighting
Sage Leaf Pendant
Good photos are a result of determining the best shooting
criteria, following photographic rules such as considering the rule
of thirds, subject space, color, contrast and sometimes breaking the rules. John Spoltore will teach you how to evaluate the
scene, compose your image, determine lighting conditions and
adjust your camera settings for professional-looking photos.
Please register.
Using non-toxic copper clay, jewelry artisan Jo Ann Wadler
will show you how to create a hand-crafted pendant. Each sage
leaf pendant will be uniquely your creation. There is a $10 fee.
In-person registration is accepted at the Reference Desk. The
instructor will fire your pendant and you may pick it up at the
Library on or after August 12th.

Join us for a delicious BBQ dinner
at the Library. Competitive Pit Master
Brian Collins will bring his 10-foot smoker to the Library to demonstrate and
prepare your dinner. Weather permitting, you will be able to watch him as he
prepares a variety of BBQ items. Then,
while you enjoy your dinner indoors, he
will discuss all things BBQ, including
cuts of meat, setting up your grill for
indirect cooking, and more. There is a
$10 per person fee which includes dinner. In-person registration
at the Reference Desk, by August 3rd is required.

Maria was born in Croatia and lived in Paris, France until
she moved to the United States and settled on Long Island.
She has studied in Paris, and with a variety of professional
artists at the Art League of Long Island. The inspiration
for her paintings comes from the three countries she calls
home. In this exhibition, she portrays her passion for art in
the memories of her past.

bring your own prepared food.)
• BLONDIE’S BAKE SHOP & LILY’S BREAD BOX will have
a delicious array of desserts and coffee for purchase after
dinner.
• Relax and socialize around the firepit in the “Under the Stars
Lounge” provided by VALUE DRUGS.
• RESERVE YOUR TABLE NOW, ($20 per person) and start
planning your table theme and decorations for a chance to win,
the “Best Dressed” table.

Harborfields Public Library cardholders can book a oneon-one, 45-minute technology training session
with Reference Librarian Brian Adams. You
should have a clear goal of what you would
like to learn during your training session such
as how to:
• Download eBooks or audiobooks
to a device.
• Set up an email account.
•Set up a Facebook account.
•Learn to use Library databases for research.
•Use the Library Catalog from home to reserve
and renew materials.
Librarians are instructors, not tech support, and cannot troubleshoot or fix malfunctioning laptops, devices or
software. Sessions are available at various times during the
week. For more information, or to schedule an appointment,

Plan Your Summer Activities
and Museum Trips !
The Harborfields Public Library now has 15
museum passes available to borrow for your summer enjoyment. Museum passes may be reserved
up to 60 days in advance from the Library Website
or through the Reference Desk. You also may
purchase discount admission tickets or vouchers to the following venues: American Museum of Natural History, Long
Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center, The Long Island Game
Farm and the Bronx Zoo, at the Circulation Desk. Passes
and vouchers are available to adult Harborfields Public
Library cardholders only.
Look for this sign in the window of participating
businesses and present your Harborfields Public
Library card to receive a discount.
