February
National Heart Health Month
Stewardship is not just about taking care of others or of other’s belongings, it can also be about taking
care of ourselves, our family and our health. Since February is National Heart Health Month what a
great time to practice stewardship on ourselves. When was the last time you slowed down to think
about what you or your family eat for every meal of the day, how much exercise each of you get on a
daily basis, or even how much down time you
have to decompress from your very busy life?
Try A Heart Healthy Recipe!
Having the right strategy now, can pay off
for the rest of your life.
Strategies for Better Heart
Health & Knowledge
Choose a healthy eating plan. The food you
eat can decrease your risk of heart disease
and stroke.
Be physically active. Start slowly and work
up to the cardio and resistance your doctor
recommends for you.
Learn the warning signs of a heart attack
and stroke. Not everyone experiences sudden
numbness with a stroke or severe chest pain
with a heart attack. And heart attack symptoms
in women can be different than men.

National Wear Red Day
In 2003, the American Heart Association and the National heart, Lung and Blood Institute took action against a disease that was claiming the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year–a
disease that women weren’t paying attention to. A disease they truly believed, and many still believe to this day, affects more men than women. Stemming from that action, National Wear Red
Day was born. It’s held on the first Friday in February every year to raise awareness about heart
disease being the No. 1 killer of women. Information provided by www.goredforwomen.org.
Join your fellow District employees and wear red on Friday, February 5th.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT…
Colleen Weill ~ Customer Service ~ Representative
Where were you born & raised? I was born in Queens, New York, and I graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in 1977. What was special about where you were from? I lived in an apartment complex,
where everyone knew everyone. I always felt safe and the neighborhood was always friendly. Hobbies?
Favorite activities? I love biking. My husband and I both have custom made recumbent trikes. I just biked
my personal fastest speed this past weekend at 16.1 mph for 40+ miles. We ride on the rails to trails in
Florida and we ride with other recumbent riders and enjoy local trips and away trips. I also enjoy cooking/
baking and dining out at new restaurants. Tell us about your family, people (including pets!) in your
life…I have been married for 35 years to the most wonderful man, Charlie. After being married for a year,
we relocated to New Jersey. We moved to The Villages in 2006. We have no children but we do have a Burmese cat, named Dom. Who has
been the most influential person in your life and why? My husband. He has helped me be the person I am today: stronger, more outgoing,
willing to try new adventures. What’s the best advice you ever received? Treat people the way you would want to be treated. What is the career & training path that led you to the Districts? My career was spent in Project Management at various Investment Banks in New York City.
After settling into The Villages, I worked for Recreation for a total of 7 years in different positions: Fitness Assistant; Facilities Specialist and RSR.
When the opportunity arose to transfer to Customer Service as a Representative, I jumped on it! I truly believe I found my niche. Can you tell us
about your day-today responsibilities? Assisting residents with questions on a wide array of subjects; purchase of veterans bricks; gate cards;
resident and non-owner ID cards; guest cards and trail fees. What is your favorite aspect of working for the Districts? Interacting with residents and co-workers. It is such a great place to come to work every day. I work with and for the nicest people I know. I feel very blessed. What
is the most interesting thing you have ever seen? The Grand Canyon. Sorry I waited so long. It was truly amazing and breathtaking.
My favorites…. Movie: An Officer and a Gentleman Television Show: Big Bang Theory Sports Team: NY Yankees
Vacation Spot: Bora Bora Restaurant: Victoria and Albert’s In Orlando Food: I have not met a food I didn’t like! But I love seafood
best of all. Dessert: Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
Paul Ard ~ Recreation ~ Supervisor, Bacall Recreation Center
Where were you born & raised and went to school? I was born in Detroit, Michigan but moved at a
young age to Atlantic Beach, Florida (right outside of Jacksonville). Growing up at the beach all my
schools were only blocks from the ocean; which made for some fun times. After graduating high school
I attended Santa Fe CC in Gainesville and the University of Florida. What was special about where
you were from? The BEACH! I grew up a house away from the ocean. We were always doing something there: swimming, surfing, or fishing. At the time, it was a smaller beach community and it had a
friendly, laid back atmosphere. You always saw someone you knew around the beaches. Tell us about
your family, people (including pets!) in your life… In my immediate family there is my wife Heather,
my son Paul (7), my daughter Ella (almost (4) and my son Joey (2). There is never a dull moment around our house. Someone always has
something going on and it keeps us all vey busy. Hobbies? Favorite Activities? When I can, I like to take the kids fishing. We have a cane pole
that really makes it exciting for them. I also enjoy going with my family to the park or to a special, fun event and watching the kids have a blast.
Who has been the most influential person in your life and why? My wife Heather has been the most influential person in my life. She has
always been there for support, guidance and advice. She is a very strong person that helps me stay focused when life gives us a challenge. She
helps make me a better person, husband and father. What’s the best advice you ever received? To always try and see others’ perspectives
on things and not get blinded by your own. It’s being able to see outside your personal “window” and try to see things how someone else may see
them. It allows you to gain more understanding and perspective in your situation. What is the career & training path that led you to the Districts? Most recently I worked in the Theme Park industry here in Central Florida. I was at Universal Resort for seven years and Legoland Florida for almost four. At the parks I managed Food & Beverage Restaurant Areas, supervised in Guest Service and in Admission Operations. I also
participated in facilitating major events such as Mardi Gras & Halloween Horror Nights at Universal. At Legoland, I was part of the F&B team
responsible for the planning and opening of both the park and waterpark. Can you tell us about your day-to-day responsibilities? I supervise
the Bacall Recreation Center and three Neighborhood Pools. My responsibilities include overseeing the maintenance, supplying and general
upkeep of the centers. The Bacall Center is almost always busy with groups and activities and I help facilitate the smooth running of the center’s
busy schedule. I’m assisted with it all, in big part, by my six awesome Recreation Assistants. They are the reason Bacall has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere and why residents enjoy our facility so much. What is your favorite aspect of working for the Districts? I like working with
the residents and seeing them enjoy their lifestyle. I also enjoy being involved with all the different special events and activities that the Recreation Department offers. Most of all I enjoy being a part fo the Recreation Department Family. We have a great team and a lot of great people.
What is the most interesting thing you have ever seen? One of the most interesting things has to be Graceland. My mom was a huge Elvis
fan when I was growing up, so I grew up being a fan too. It was wild to see how Graceland was like a time capsule from the 70’s.
My favorites: Movie: Vacation...Television Show: Modern Family… Sports Team: Florida Gators & Chicago Cubs…
Vacation Spot: Anyplace that has a beach… Restaurant: Gators Dockside...Food: Pizza...Dessert: Any Ice Cream…

Notice to all Full Time Employees
In the month of February you can expect to receive a personalized benefit
statement. Your employee benefits
contribute greatly to your annual compensation and to your personal wellbeing. Your statement will not only give you a brief summary of
your benefits, but also provides “costs of benefits” information, which is important when considering your total compensation. Most importantly, your statement will give you
information about you – about your earnings, your benefit
Healthy Heart Choices!
You can make healthy choices to lower your risk of developing heart disease, for example….
Watch your weight
Quit smoking and stay way from secondhand smoke
Control your cholesterol and blood pressure
If you drink alcohol, only drink it in moderation
Stay as active as your doctor recommends
Happy February! Holidays are over, decorations are packed away, relatives have returned home and now it’s time for some relaxing. The weather is chilly, so it’s a great
time for an outdoor fire. Marshmallows and beverages for all; maybe the children are
making s’mores or you’re just snuggling without children. Not everyone can have the
fire department on alert during this peaceful romantic evening in the event of fire flareups so here are some tips from This Old House magazine.
Remember in the event of a fire emergency call 911 sooner than later,
keep calm and protect yourself.
Submitted by Fire Marshal Daniel Hickey, The Villages Public Safety Department.
Fire Pit Safety
What to do when your outdoor hearth gets too hot to handle
BY NATALIE RODRIGUEZ THIS OLD HOUSE MAGAZINE
A blazing fire pit is a delightful comfort on cool nights—unless the fire
flares out of control. For safety's sake, take these precautions before striking the match. Never place a pit closer than 10 feet from anything flammable, including your house and overhead tree branches. With gas pits,
make sure all vents are clear to avoid smoky flare-ups. And only use the
fuel that the pit is built to burn. For traditional wood-burning pits, that
means using dry, well-seasoned sticks. Also, don't load in so many that
there's a danger of some falling out. Once the pit is lit, keep the following
close at hand, just in case your merry bonfire suddenly starts burning a
little too bright.
Water or sand. Extinguishing a flare-up might be as simple as keeping
your garden hose nearby, with the water turned on and the nozzle set to
"spray." (A focused stream of water could spread burning embers.)
Check ahead of time to see if your pit can withstand a dousing; water can
crack
ceramic pits and even some metal ones. If it can't get wet, or if
you're not sure, keep a bucket of dry sand nearby to dump on the flames.
For a gas or propane pit, turn off the supply before attempting to extinguish any fire.
Fire extinguisher. It should be a dry-chemical extinguisher with a Class B and C or multipurpose rating, such as the one
you have in your kitchen. Be ready to follow the PASS procedure: Pull the pin; Aim at the base of the fire; Squeeze the
trigger slowly; Sweep the nozzle from side to side. Remember that most portable fire extinguishers have a range of just
6 to 10 feet and last for 8 to 10 seconds.
Portable phone. If fire spreads beyond the confines of the pit or flares above your head, or prevents you from switching
off the propane tank or natural-gas valve, calmly evacuate everyone from the area and call your local fire department .
February is National
Pet Dental Month!
February is pet dental health
awareness month. When was the
last time you checked Max or
Fluffy’s pearly (or not-so-pearly)
whites…or took them to the veterinarian for a dental exam? It’s
estimated that 85 percent of all
pets have periodontal disease by
the time they are 3 years of age.
If a dental cleaning is needed and has
been performed, you can then take a
number of steps at home to keep
your pet’s teeth clean and lengthen
the intervals between dental cleanings.
Contact your pet’s Vet to get advice
on Dental Cleaning and Care for
their teeth.

Congratulations to

District Employees
Caught in the Act!
Lt. Jason Weis, Firefighter/EMT Brandon Ickes, and Firefighter/EMT Keith Norris recently
received a letter of praise from a resident, stating
they were extremely professional and competent.
“I had asked for assistance in replacing the
smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my
house-they arrived, were courteous, focused and
highly competent…..the additional service provided by the Fire Department is unbelievable!”
Community Watch received a call from a resident wishing to thank the Dispatcher who saved
her life by conferencing her call to 911 on Christmas morning. The resident was diagnosed with a
severe case of pneumonia. She was recently released from the hospital and wanted to convey
her deepest gratitude to Dispatcher Nancy
Brennen for recognizing that she was in distress
and needed assistance.
Jacqueline McCarthy, Finance Customer Service Representative, received a letter of thanks
and commendation from a resident for her efforts
and taking the time to resolve a billing issue.
A resident sent an e-mail to Chief Cain commending Community Watch Dispatcher Doris
“DJ” May on being “polite, very professional, ...
pleasant, understanding and helpful” when she
called at 3:30 in the morning to get some nonemergency numbers to receive help on stopping
her smoke alarm from chirping even after the batteries were taken out.

Right: Nancy Gibson, Eisenhower RSR , on safari with
Safari Leader at the Kruger National Park of South Africa. Nancy
spotted the Big Five: Lion, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard and
Rhinoceros. The term “Big Five”
refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. “No,
I did not shoot any animals. I just
enjoyed watching them interact in
their natural environment.”

DISTRICT UNIVERSITY: UPCOMING TRAINING
Does the thought of hitting the books again make you cringe? Studying for a test make your
palms sweat? Not to worry! Whether you are attending a mandatory class (i.e., New Hire Orientation, CPR, CDD Orientation, Built To Last,, etc. ) or skills-based training (i.e. Business Writing,
Word, Excel, Supervisor training, etc. ), the ultimate goal of the District University is to provide
you with useful and ongoing training to make your daily responsibilities easier. We have taken
your past suggestions and comments from prior class surveys, and have a some new things planned for 2016, including web-based
training. Some of those classes may fit our needs perfectly, others no so much - so we will need your ongoing feedback to help us
fine tune and create the best training program possible for our organization. The classes listed below are a small sampler of what is
upcoming for February and March. Each month Melenie Mancauskas, our Training & Special Projects Generalist, will be sending
out flyers of what is upcoming, as well as monthly calendars and you will also see classes posted here in our newsletter. How do you
sign up? Some classes you will automatically be registered for by your department. Meaning no action required by you except to attend. Some classes you will have a choice to attend, and those will require you to register. Each class will indicate what you will need
(or not need) to do to attend. Questions? Feel free to contact Melenie Mancauskas ([email protected]) or me Deb Franklin - and we will be happy to help you. So polish an apple, get some new school clothes, and we hope to see you in class
soon!
