A company called "Humustar" used this peat bog in
Puy-de-Dôme from 1989 to 2002 for horticultural
products. Since then, the council has developed the
site into a tourist and educational attraction.
Restoration work has been done on the site: redoing
the profile of the faces and drainage ditches and
replenishing with water. The council has developed
the educational side in partnership with the Parc
Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne nature
reserve and Humustar to recreate the history of
working the site, its restoration and development.
Various kinds of scientific monitoring are being
carried out to measure the impact of this restoration
on the environment.
In summer, the peat bog is surrounded by Rose Bay
Willow Herb and rushes are everywhere. The Sancy
range stands out in the background. The ground is
covered with grass or made up of fine gravel around
the peat bog.
The peat bog is 900 m long and less than 400 m
wide. The area around it covers about 4000 m2.
The extensive, open landscape means the sun is
present all day long.
