We know that good communication between school and
parents contributes to student success. Therefore I am
very pleased to let you know that access to the “Parent
Portal” of the student management system is now open.
This allows parents and caregivers to check our calendar to
see what's coming up and to see information about their
son or daughter’s attendance record, timetable, NCEA results and how they are
going in assignments and tests. An insert in your child’s report pack will show
you how to use the Parent Portal. From your smart phone, tablet or a computer
simply follow the web address provided and once logged on you will be able to
quickly and easily select the information you need from a number of pages.
On a personal note, we extend a warm welcome to Jeffrey Nepe who joins us in
the position of HOD Te Reo Maori, and to the international students from Korea,
Thailand, Japan and China who have started with us this term. We trust you will
enjoy your time at Edgewater College.

Congratulations
Making it count
Congratulations to the school Niuean
and Kapa Haka cultural groups on
their placings at Polyfest 2015. This
is a great festival and a fabulous
experience for all involved.
In early April a team of very talented boys represented Edgewater College
at the Auckland Ultimate Frisbee Championship.
Congratulations to the Kapa Haka
Group on placing 9th in 2nd Division.
This is a small team with new
members and they performed well.
Congratulations to the Niuean Group
for placing 2nd Overall with additional
awards presented to Salle Tamatoa
(Best Boy Leader), Sophia
Ta’akimoeaka (3rd Best Girl Leader).
The group also placed 2nd for
Costume.
We extend our thanks to Mrs
Tamatoa and the Tamatoa family for
the time they have given to manage
the Niuean Group toward success.
This is the last year the family will be
involved and we are extremely
grateful for their commitment to the
group, and for all the years they have
supported the school. Thank you.
Congratulations to ex-students
Courtney Bennett and Whare Kaihau
who are now competing at the
highest level of Kapa Haka for Te Iti
Kahurangi, a Waikato based team,
which successfully competed at Te
Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival
in March. Courtney and Whare were
both founding members of the
Edgewater College Te Tahawai Kapa
Haka group.

Daunting was the word as the semi-final play began against Westlake Boys
who started with fancy formations and clinical plays that derived from
hours of practiced set plays. Our boys dropped a point early and looked
stunned in their inzone. So what did they do – well, they just started to do
what they know best; which was to throw out the playbook and run some
trick shots! Ropati Naseri threw like his life depended on it; boomerangs
that landed perfectly in the opposition inzone every time!
Quinlyn Cunningham made all his throws count with catch after catch
alongside 40 minutes of sprinting for defensive purposes. The full time
horn went and we found ourselves at 5-5 in a next point wins situation.
Westlake Boys took a catch that was marginally out of play and a call was
made that kept our boys in the game. Enter Angus Grainger and his
superb tomahawk throw which successfully found Quinlyn in the zone for
the win!
Celebrations were brief as our team headed straight in to the final against
Auckland Boys Grammar (the favourites). Enter Elbert Swartz whose
parents made the trip to the North Shore to watch their son pluck Frisbees
out of the sky like it was his sole purpose on earth. Once again Ropati
used his golden arm to distribute insane upside down discs to anyone who
put their hand up. The score board swapped leads the entire time and we
found ourselves 7-6 up with 2 minutes to play.
Our team were on the defensive back foot until Auckland Boys lost control
and the disc went to ground. We causally placed the disc down at the
other end and heard the horn go for full time. We thought that was the
game... until Auckland Boys picked the disc up and made one final full
length throw to the inzone to land a final point. Luckily the head of
Ultimate NZ was on the scene to rule out the throw as the horn had
already gone.
The celebrations began again, smiles from ear to ear, hugs all around,
emotions were running high. These boys are now the Auckland Ultimate
Frisbee Champions 2015!

Art Fair 2015
We are hosting an Art Fair on 13 and
14 May. This fundraising event is a
first for Edgewater College. It aims to
support teaching and learning and it
will give students an opportunity to
experience art in a commercial
context.
In essence this event will link the
work of the Art Department and the
NZ Curriculum to Careers in the
industry by developing skills for the
creative industries.
Exceptional national and
international renowned artists are
supporting and exhibiting:
Nigel Brown, Tyrone Layne
Robyn Kahukiwa, Fatu Feu'u,
Justin Summerton, Aaron Waghorn
Amy Melchior, Mark Wooller,
Dame Louise Henderson,
Keith Patterson, Sian Jenson-Jones
Graham Stewart, Kasia Marcisz,
Matthew Dowman and Paul Kim
We are also exhibiting student’s work
and you will be able to vote for the
top art student from each year level.
The winners will receive a prize
generously donated by the event
sponsors AUT, Te Tuhi, Gordon Harris
Art Supplies and National Art
Supplies.
The exhibition opening night will
start with a welcome by the Niuean
Group.
Art works will be on sale and there
will be a raffle for a food hamper
kindly donated by Farro’s.
Come along and enjoy a great event
and support our students and the
school. See you there!
Senior School Ball 2015
This year’s senior ball will take place on 20 June at The Ellerslie
Convention Centre at the Ellerslie Race Course.
The theme for the ball is Une Soirée d’Hiver (A Winter Evening).
Ticket cost is $100 payable in full by Thursday 11 June. A deposit
of $25 is required by Friday 8 May.
We look forward to a glittering occasion!
Uniform matters
Now that the weather is getting cooler, all students must have at
least one warm garment for the winter terms – a school jersey
and/or jacket. Please ensure that uniform is in good, clean
condition and worn properly. All garments should be labelled with
your child’s name.
Winter Shoes: plain, secure, black, leather school shoes are to be
worn during Terms 2 and 3. No sandals, no canvas shoes, no hightop boots.
Girls Socks/Stockings: white socks or black stockings are to be
worn with winter shoes. No knee-high stockings.
Now is also a good time to check out the UniformMe website to
organise second-hand uniform. All you need is an internet
connection and you are away! The service is free to use and lets you
list surplus uniform items so that other parents in our school can
buy them. You can also donate the proceeds to the school if you
wish. To start using this new system:
1. Go to www.uniformme.co.nz
2. Register (all you need is an email address)
3. Start buying and selling second-hand uniform

A career experience
Edgewater Community Education
During the holidays, I was grateful to
experience something that only a few
people discover.
Our Term 2 courses are starting but still have limited
spaces available. We have a large variety of short courses
to choose from including Cooking and Cake Decorating,
Café Barista Training, Music, Sewing and ESOL English for
Migrants.
Hidden in a small town called Bell Block
near New Plymouth, is a small
institution called PIHMS (Pacific
International Hotel Management
School).
Myself and 17 other people from
around New Zealand and one girl from
Japan, travelled to the institute for a
four-day course. We had no idea what
we were in for! We learnt what they
do; experiencing campus life, having
some fun in and around the city but
mainly learning what happens in the
hotel industry and the vital information
that we needed to know.
It turned out to be the most amazing
experience I have ever had, and I was
able to practice what I possibly could be
doing as a career next year.
And I met, bonded and talked with
people either lecturing or studying on
campus. It helped me gain some real
insight into all aspects of hotel
management and what it’s like to work
in the industry.
Our Arts and Crafts classes start during May and June and
we have lots of different things to offer. Why not start a
new craft project this coming winter? We have something
for everyone! Try out our Stained Glass and Lead-lighting
course, Intro to Woodwork or Flower Arranging for Home
and Church, and Mosaics.
For further details please contact us on our website
www.shortcoursesandworkshops.co.nz or visit our Office at
Edgewater College. Hours are Monday to Friday 9:00am to
3:30pm.

I couldn’t have done all this without
help from the school and the Gateway
program. They helped fund me to
travel and stay on site where I
developed skills and gained information
for my further studies.
Thank you to Mrs. Bayley and Mrs Blasé
for introducing me to the course and for
organising my transport and
accommodation.
I recommend as many students as
possible go and experience this
institute. You can gain a lot more than
just hotel management from it.
