soFANDA BEATIN
One day a friend asked me if I wanted to go see a roller derby game with her. I was like… OMG there is ROLLER
DERBY??? FOR SURE I’ll go to a game!!! I loved watching Roller Derby on TV when I was a kid. Once I had seen the
game I was hooked! Over the next two years I kept bumping into people who were involved in derby, they kept
pressuring me to join. On Jan 4th 2010, I DID! I still have much more learning to do but, for not being able to
hardly stand in skates just 3 years ago, to making a home team in 3 months, then to making the travel team last
year, captaining the travel team for 2013, joining the training committee and becoming a sponsored Skater with
Jackson Roller, I feel like I have accomplished more than I expected to already. I never thought that I would be
the captain of the travel team, or be at the point to teach what I have learned about derby, even though it was
something I aspired to do in my future.I love the fact that Derby is the most challenging sport I have ever played
in my life. It challenges my mind and my body, I love it. This sport has allowed me to reach levels of fitness I have
craved, for a very long time.

roller derby before she even put on skates. Hanna was never involved in any team sports prior to derby but now

I’m 32 years old and I play for the Rideau Valley Roller Girls from Ottawa. My love for derby started when I was 6
years old. It was the only sport I ever really wanted to play. I played volley-ball, soccer, baseball, hockey, I was an avid
skier yet nothing could ever compare to roller derby. I finally got into roller derby years later after meeting three very
badass derby girls at a house party (Pretty Sketchy/Drunky Brewster/Hanna Murphy). After that chance encounter
I went to the next practice with the Rideau Valley Roller Girls and skated the entire practice with skates 2 sizes too
big. Shortly thereafter I had my own skates. Since then I’ve played with the Slaughter Daughters(RVRG), Vixens(
travel team RVRG) and Team Canada. I like to be challenged on and off the track. My off skate training is designed
specifically for derby to increase my strength, speed, agility and endurance. I’m co-head of RVRG’s training committee.

“In my mind Oakbank, Manitoba will always be my hometown even though I’ve been living in Ontario
for over 10 years. I am finally realizing my dream of becoming a high school teacher this summer as
I graduate with my Bachelor of Education. Roller derby was a hobby that became, with the support
of my husband, a lifestyle. I was with the Tri-City Roller Girls since its start in 2008 and just moved to
Toronto this past year where I am proud to be a part of an amazingly competitive and supportive team:
CN Power. I was also privileged to have been on Team Canada for the first ever roller derby World Cup. I
am so excited and grateful to be representing the Canadian derby community and Jackson Skates!”

Position: Blocker
Playing Derby: 6 Years
Hometown: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
I am 35 years old and currently play for the Calgary Roller Derby Association (CRDA) All Stars and for
one of our three home teams, the B52 Bellas. My love for derby started the first day I skated in a practice. I’ve played sports all of my life, but no sport has ever been so dang fun! Derby combines all of the
things I like in other sports into one giant pile of amazingness.
SIN-E-STAR
I started my derby career in 2008 in Kitchener, Ontario with the Tri-City Roller Girls and as a league, we
grew up and made it to the big leagues – achieving full WFTDA member status in 2011. Over the years,
I’ve had the privilege of playing with Tri-City’s Venus Fly Tramps, Vicious Dishes and the All Star Travel
Team, Tri-City Thunder. Since relocating to Calgary, I’ve the privilege of playing with CRDAs B52 Bellas
and the All Stars and also with Team Alberta.
I love training and am a member of CRDAs training committee as well as a member of our WFTDA committee. CRDA is currently a WFTDA Apprentice
member and we look forward to gaining full membership status soon.
Finally, and most importantly, I met my beautiful wife through derby, so if nothing else, derby brought me a life-time of love and joy. No big deal.

I’m 36 years old and I a member of the Calgary Roller Derby Association (CRDA). I have skated for as
long as I can remember. And I played competitive sports most of my life...figure skating, broomball,
ball hockey, softball, soccer and rugby. After watching the A&E series Roller Girls I knew I had to play
derby. One day while hanging at the tattoo shop a few gals started talking about starting a roller derby
league and then we chatted with a few more gals and those gals chatted with a few more gals and
well the rest is history. Since 2008 I have had the privilege of being a member of two different leagues
and skating with countless amazing women. From 2008-2012 I was a member of Tri-City Roller Girls.
I skated with The Vicious Dishes (Home Team) and Tri-City Thunder (Travel Team). While with TCRG I
helped captain, coach and train league and fresh meat skaters. Since September of 2012, i have been
a member of the Calgary Roller Derby Association. I skate with The B52 Bellas (Home Team) and a cocaptain of The Calgary All Stars (Travel Team). As a member of CRDA I help train league, smash squad
and fresh meat skaters. Over the years I have also had an opportunity to play for other teams including: Clam Diggers (2009-Toronto Pride), Vagine Regime Canada (2010-Toronto Pride), Super Sweet
(2010), Team Alberta (2013).
I love roller derby. FACT! I love the athleticism, comradery, competitive play and sportswomanship. I love how roller derby is ever evolving and revolutionizing women’s sports around the world. From the first day I heard about WFTDA I wanted to be a member and play at the highest and most
competitive level of derby. In 2011 that dream came true when Tri-City became full WFTDA members. I played two amazing seasons skating with
and against some of the best derby players in the world. This year CRDA applied and was accepted into the WFTDA Apprenticeship program. I am
so excited for what the future holds. And last but certainly not least, I love roller derby because I met my wife in roller derby. It was literally love at
first site. Who could blame me...she is beautiful and an amazing derby player. Within in moments of meeting sin-e-star, I asked her to be my derby
wife and a few years later I asked her to be my for realsie wife.
Likes: Roller derby (obviously), traveling, tattoos, cheesey sports movies, pedicures, spending time with family and friends, coffee, my 2 cats, facts,
genuine people... Dislikes: Bullies, drama, all things cold, autocorrect.
