2012 Water Quality Volunteer Milestones
20 Year Award Recipients
Erno Bonebakker
Water Quality Site: Chebeague Stone Pier ~ Chebeague Island
Erno moved to Portland in 1988 to be close to Casco Bay. When offered
the opportunity to do water sampling for Friends of Casco Bay, he
integrated it with his passion for boating by sampling from his sailboat in
the channel between Little Chebeague and Long islands for several years.
Later on, he sampled at Southport Marine and is currently sampling at the
Stone Pier on Chebeague where his family has a seasonal cottage. In the
“post-career” phase of his professional life, Erno enjoys working on Little
Chebeague Island in the summer and taking calls at L.L.Bean in the fall.
Walter (Doc) Phillips
Water Quality Site: Jordan Point ~ Harpswell
Doc and Joan Phillips have loved living on the coast of North Harpswell
for 31 years. Doc enjoys water monitoring and recognizes the “continuing
diligence of Peter Milholland and Mike Doan to make the program work
so perfectly.” He enjoys sailing his 23' Compac sailboat. A longtime sailor,
in the '60s he constructed an 18' kayak (foldboat) and a 10' sailing dinghy.
Along with his family, he spends as much time as possible on Casco Bay
and greatly appreciates what Friends of Casco Bay accomplishes through
its ongoing efforts to protect and improve the Bay. On land, he enjoys
raising berries and beekeeping. He also participates in Maine's Tree
Growth program and Harpswell Heritage Land Trust.
10 Year Award Recipient
Dick Stevens
Water Quality Site: Portland Yacht Club ~ Falmouth
Dick and his wife Penny moved to Portland upon their retirement in 2000.
They belong to the Portland Yacht Club and frequently go sailing on
Honalee, a Sabre 34 they bought shortly after moving to Maine. They also
spend many hours paddling in Casco Bay in a tandem kayak, which gives
them an up close view of the water. Dick is very concerned about the
environment in general and Casco Bay in particular. He feels that his
efforts to analyze the water for Friends of Casco Bay at the Portland Yacht
Club make a small contribution toward the preservation of a clean and
healthy environment along our shoreline.

5 Year Award Recipients
Sheila McDonald
Water Quality Sites: Mere Point ~ Brunswick
& Lookout Point ~ Harpswell
Sheila McDonald, a Montana native, has worked for over three decades in the
preservation, interpretation, and research of Maine history. She is currently the
Deputy Director of the Maine State Museum in Augusta. There, she
particularly enjoys working to fulfill the museum’s educational mission of
collecting and exhibiting artifacts and specimens from Maine’s natural and
cultural past.
Debora Price
Water Quality Sites: Mere Point ~ Brunswick
& Lookout Point ~ Harpswell
Now that Debora Price is no longer a teacher and a small business owner, she
spends her time volunteering and tutoring while house mending, gardening,
and moving a lot of firewood. For 30 years, she has been discovering her place
on Mere Point in Brunswick. But, she says, nothing matches the thrill of
greeting Casco Bay with a bucket at first light on Saturday mornings.
Ansel Critchfield
Water Quality Site: Walton Park ~ Falmouth
Ansel is a 15 year old from Casco who has been a Water Quality monitor since
he was 10. He has especially enjoyed the Dissolved Oxygen test, basking in
the sun, watching the ospreys fish, and sliding down the rail on the ramp when
the tide is low. Ansel is currently in the Junior Ski Patrol Program at Shawnee
Peak, and is also involved in the Civil Air Patrol. He is in a 4-H program
called Laker Youth Community Action, where he has worked on detection
and abatement of milfoil in Sebago lake and the Songo River. He also plays
the trumpet.
Lisa Willey-Critchfield
Water Quality Site: Walton Park ~ Falmouth
Lisa lives inland, in Casco, where she has been a homeschooling parent to Sky,
Maya and Ansel and is married to Bob Critchfield, her water quality partner.
Lisa currently works at L.L.Bean as seasonal staff in Alterations. She has
taught science to many homeschoolers and has even brought students to help
with water testing. She coordinates the compost and recycling tent at the
Common Ground Country Fair. She loves learning all she can about nature and
science and sharing it with others. Lisa would like to thank Bob for helping
nearly every test day, especially when the tide
was low and the ramp was steep!
