this issue is a composite of Bicycle Trade & Industry and Scooter Trade & Industry
industry association
surveys users
Britain’s bike riders and scooterists welcome
safety initiatives and expect governments to introduce practical measures, according to research commissioned by
the Motor Cycle Industry Association. Three-quarters of
riders said that a government that has a more positive approach to motorcycling could contribute to motorcycle
safety on the roads.
In light, of the recent launch of the National Motorcycle
Strategy, where a number of proposals to help ‘mainstream’
motorcycling are promised, bikers can hope that the new
government will continue with these positive developments.
Access to bus lanes for bikers is positively welcomed by
87%, who reckon that existing schemes in areas such as
Bristol demonstrate that bus lanes can be used by bikes
and scooters without compromising safety for other road
users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
Riders recognise that Local Authorities have a role to
play in making roads safer. Improving the conditions of
roads is considered to be the most beneficial action they
can take with 85% of respondents agreeing. On the other
hand, only 1% of riders think adding more traffic calming
measures such as speed bumps would creating a safer
riding environment.
Local Authorities are currently developing their Local
Transport Plans (LTP), a process to be completed early in
2006. With a national strategy in place and an increasing
levels of guidance and advice available, local authorities
can have no excuse for ignoring motorcycles in their transport plans. Craig Carey-Clinch, MCI’s director of public
affairs said, “ Riders are not making unrealistic demands,
what they are asking for from government are sensible and
practical measures that will provide safer roads for motorcyclists and all road-users alike”.
“These measures are closely linked with National Motorcycle Strategy and the MCI’s manifesto which is calling on
Government to implement these goals in order to develop
a sustainable future for motorcycling in the UK.”
Bikes, Barriers and Breakthroughs is the title
of the Spring Cycle Campaigns Conference being held
by CTC and CCN (The Cycle Campaign Network) on May
21 at Godalming Borough Hall, Surrey.

the key to solving
urban congestion
problems
A major survey of travel behaviour in three English
cities has revealed the huge potential for reducing traffic
and tackling congestion through relatively small and simple changes to people’s daily travel patterns. The research,
conducted by Socialdata in collaboration with Sustrans, the
UK’s leading sustainable transport charity, showed that
walking, cycling or public transport provide a practical alternative for up to 56% of local car trips.
A total of over 12,000 people in Darlington, Peterborough
and Worcester were surveyed and the results provide a
snapshot of how people travel and, importantly, the changes
that are possible to improve the quality of life for everyone.
In a typical week residents of the three towns spend an
average of one hour every day travelling, getting a distance
of around 13 miles. The greatest proportion of trips are made
for leisure reasons, with shopping and work each accounting for around one in five trips and one in ten trips are for
school or educational reasons.
Around 25% of all trips are made on foot, 8% by public
transport and 3% by bike. Nearly 2/3 of trips are in a car
with 43% as a driver and 22% as a passenger. However
around 30% of car trips in each town were no longer than 2
miles, and the majority were within the town.
But, while the evidence suggests an ongoing reliance on
the car, Sustrans’ researchers discovered that nearly all
residents are unhappy with the increased traffic and support sustainable alternatives to car travel including public
transport, cycling and walking. Nine out of ten people considered sustainable transport to be a priority for transport
planners and their policies.
Interestingly the residents of the three cities also spend
more time walking and cycling than driving for their everyday journeys - 22 minutes per day compared with just 20
minutes spent driving.
Sustrans’ Senior Projects Officer James Ryle explains the
significance of the work: “The three towns asked us to carry
out the research to inform their Sustainable Travel Towns
Programmes. The information reveals enormous potential
for people to occasionally leave their car at home, action
that will make a real difference to themselves and to the
lives of everyone living in these cities.”

Things are moving for the Lichfield distributor Greyville Enterprises with the addition of new sales staff
to help drive the 2005 season. Two new sales representatives have been appointed together with additional personnel at

The much regretted demise of a universal trade show for the industry is a

The first person I met inside the door was Eva Simms. I was in Regent Street, not so far from whirling wind turbines

today the shop sells and services bikes, trikes,
what a pity the bicycle trade has enjoyed stabbing itself in the

Simms said he had always aimed to be the Ford trader rather
than stock Ladas or Rolls Royce. “I aim to sell good quality
product that gives value to the customer and a brand that is
not hard to work with when it comes to build-up or servicing”.
A simple guide to how a day goes is that on this morning,
while mechanic Darren was working on an MBK Vetto frame
swap -”it’s a recovered insurance job, been stuffed into a wall
by the look of it” in the upstairs showroom Eva was closing a
sale for a nice little line in first time riding for a grandchild.
“That’s about the range really” Ronny said, “but if only there
was more money in selling bicycles.”
So is there a difference in the trades? “Lots of the fun has
gone out of business, too much bureaucracy is one thing but

is a place of history set off the western flank of mainland
Italy, Napoleon spent quite a bit of time there but today the
emphasis for one man is to make it a place where bicycles
are ridden and tested, talked about and design fettled.
There’s everything going for it here, a setting in the heart of
parkland where bicycles could play at being bicycles.
The start of S.Martino Testing Ground is underway, a place
where the co-ordination of a system to analyse and improve
the European bicycle will be taking place. The driving force
is Pietro Boselli, a man who has a good sense of humour
and a liking for seeing the funny side of life,. He described
this scheme as being the way forward for the European bicycle industry. “We can meet and discuss bicycles, we can
ride them and take time with the testing and evaluation. It is
an ideal place to be when doing such work”.

Twist & Go
revamp
Time doesn’t stand still and
nor does Twist & Go magazine as it
morphs into its new image and
emerges as TAG mag.
Changes in riding trends and a survey last year were partly the reason
for a change of approach to the content of TAG. Although still primarily a
scooter magazine the title has now
diversified to include more of the fun
and the lifestyle that surround riders
of not only scooters, but quads,
minimotos and light motorcycles as
well. Writing styles and page design
will change in line with the new look
and there is likely to be a few saucy
glamour shots to spice up the pages
for the readers.

July launch for the electric trip
For nearly a year Urban Mover have been developing a new all electric powered, Italian style
two seater road legal scooter - the Urban Runner UM430. Classed as a moped, needing tax, insurance
and MOT where applicable, the Urban Runner has a top speed in excess of 45 Kmph and a range of up
to 60 Km with the High discharge Sealed Lead Acid Gel battery pack. The Runner’s 48v integrated
rear hub motor requires minimal maintenance, power is from a state of the art PCM digital controller, offering the most progressive, smooth acceleration possible.
Now in the final stages of full European homologation and type approval launch date for the
UK is July, with the UM430 Urban runner with a new lightweight power pack utilising Nickel

Urban Mover hard on the development trail
New models developed to fill a gap in the current market offering and which are an answer to
the needs and wishes of their customers are in the pipeline at Urban Mover. The result will be summer sales for
retailers and their customers who appreciate the convenience of pedal power with an electric assist mode to
help when that extra effort is necessary
The company are currently at the end of the development of a new lightweight all alloy unisex town bike - the
Urban Sprite UM41. This model uses one of the latest Nickel Metal Hydride battery power units and weighs in at
a total of only 23kg with a range of 15 - 20 miles in pedal assist mode. It has a maximum assisted speed of
15mph/25kmph and comes with a revolutionary new 200 watt, torque sensing integrated hub motor on this and
all the new summer launch models. Four prototypes are currently undergoing exhaustive testing and will be
due for release in June. The UM41 will retail at a very competitive £749.
Another new model is the Urban Light UM45 concept bike using a new hybrid alloy frame. The new Lithium
polymer battery pack weighs 1kg, gives an effective range of between 14-18 miles on one charge with a top
assisted speed of 15mph/25kmph. With a Shimano Nexus five speed hub, the total weight of this new bike is
19kg, making it one of the lightest full size electric bikes in the world.

advantage Lithium
The Powabyke team have been burning the midnight oil to drive down weights and get more miles
per charge from their electric bike collection.
The effort is bearing fruit as their new alloy ride-totown bike is coming in with a 14 lbs saving - 6kgs in
modern parlance. The ‘green and clean’ Lithium battery can take some of the credit, but clearly even
chunky look alloy frames are lighter than steel in any
weather, and polished alloy does look rather smart.
Lithium’s power output characteristics suit e-bikes
rather well, too. Rather than power taper, as with some
other batteries, there’s a 100% kick right virtually
through to the end. Battery size is coming down, too,
giving the opportunity for a neater looking machine.
On a bespoke basis more batteries could be accommodated on the machine to offer a much longer
range ride, or to extend the time between recharging.
Powabyke stress the advantages that come with
their new breed of bike, the improved ride quality,
more distance between charging sessions and much
longer battery durability - taking three to four times
the number of charges yet costing only a bit more
than conventional style battteries at the onset.
Riders who already have a Powabyke can purchase
the new Lithium battery as a replacement. On the new
bikes the Lithium option is adding around £250 overall, but that’s a figure expected to drop as the system
attracts volume support. At the present time
Powabyke offer the separate battery charger, but this
is being integrated into the machine design for future
models.
Rehydration and carbo refuelling - you see it everywhere on the
streets, on the sports field and on the tv. It’s a megga-bucks business that
helps keep people out front and it’s a sure till-ringer when you dangle these
mouth watering impulse buys in front of customers.
It’s not all drinks, though, to chew on the go isn’t just a sporting activity
thing either. The healthy alternative to a dried-out sandwich is what you can
offer customers at your counter, the Torq brand has come along and that
has led to this new brand of mouth watering, foil-wrapped eat-well getting
the nod from the bike race following. Torq comes with plenty that appeals to
anyone on the move and needing to stay bright and alert. The hunger-knock
or a parched tongue can easily be avoided - so make your counter the
feeding stop!
Torq bars represent a concentrated form of carbohydrate energy, quite
like other genuine ‘energy bar’ products, but these ones differ by being moist
and easy to eat, whilst remaining very low in fat. This makes the product
unique in that it is highly effective and uncompromised in its function, but
still tastes very good. Fat is often used to moisten energy bars, usually in
the form of a chocolate coating, which
leads to an excess of the ineffective
calories. The huge advantage of the
Torq bar comes from the compact
concentration of effective calories
whilst at the same time it still holds
sufficient moisture for the bar to be
consumed on the move without any
need for extra rehydration.
For rehydation systems or out of a
drinking bottle, Torq energy is a
maltodextrin Glucose Polymer with
no other additives. The dry crystalline powder is mixed with water to
form a flavourless isotonic or hypertonic drink that offers a huge amount
of versatility and situation uses - on
the road or off-road in virtually every
leisure activity or sport or simply
when the weather is sweltering hot
and thirst is rampant. Torq energy can
also be added to food and soups as an ‘invisible calorie’, because it has no
taste. Maltodextrins are used by many professional cycling teams during
tours and stage races to ensure adequate energy balance.
The Torq ribose is said to provide amazing recovery and recuperation
properties. It works differently to carbohydrate-protein recovery mixtures
by directly re-charging the ATP within the muscle cells. Torq ribose doesn’t
represent an alternative to carbohydrate feeding, but more as a supplement
to it. Research shows that ribose supplementation boosts cellular recovery
by 300 to 400%.

CamelBak Products has inked an agreement with Bobby Julich, the
2004 US Olympic Bronze Medalist in the Athens men’s time trial event.
Bobby Julich is one of road cycling’s first to utilise a hydration system other
than the typical plastic water bottle. In both the 2004 Tour de France and
Olympics time trials, Julich wore CamelBak’s RaceVest under his skin suit
with the hose and bite valve punched through the skin suit.
In his new position with CamelBak, Bobby Julich will be a spokesperson
for the brand, meeting retailers, industry professionals and the media. He
will also provide the company with feedback on his usage and testing of the
CamelBak Hydration System and new products, and how they can best be
developed to fit a road cyclists’ needs.
Bobby Julich says he will exclusively use CamelBak’s Hydration System
in this year’s time trial events, such as in the Tour de France and Pro Tour
Team Time Trial, as well
as in his training or participation in other sports.
CamelBak says “we believe the credibility and
experience Bobby has
with the cycling community will inspire retailers
and consumers alike”.

sell scooters, will travel
Behind the success of the Sym Jet are some very happy dealers.
That the Jet model hit high peaks among Britain’s top selling scooters in 2004 is
a matter of record, but then that’s what’s expected with a machine like this. The
Jet is a pretty profitable sale, it’s a quality scooter with minimal demand for
after-sales support and then, to keep the young buyer happy, there’s that
special insurance deal incentive that helps the sale closure.
Ten Moore Large dealers also had happy times following the 2004 sales
successes - a trip that took in the San Yang base in Taiwan to see scooter
production in full flow, along with a raft of top-flight tourist delights to while away
more time. Then they adjourned to Phuket!
Thailand turned out to be just the place for the dealers to work on ideas to
ensure that Sym sales generate even greater return over the coming months,
although no one is admitting to doing anything other than having a great time just about the best incentive to be in the scooter business! Proving that wheels
aren’t just for selling, some of the party even took to a spell of riding.

Steven Walsh
back in charge
Recent trading difficulties
have resulted in Steven Walsh taking
back the majority shareholding in the
Concept Cycling Group he sold to
management in 2003. After an extended period during which the Concept Cycling Group fell short of the targets required by investors in the
buyout , the management invited
Steven Walsh to re-invest and to take
control again.
It is reported that over the past few
weeks Steven Walsh has been reviewing all options and having the full support of the Concept Board he has decided to step back into the company
as Chairman and Managing Director.
As a result of the restructuring
Robert Pollard has resigned from the
Concept Board of Directors to pursue
business interests outside of the bicycle industry.
“The Company needs to return to a
more hands-on style of management
to weather current market conditions”
said Pollard. “We can now get on with
the business of returning Concept to
profitability as soon as possible” says
Steven Walsh.
Chicken in
adidas
There’s £11million going into
cycle sport development - more than
the government grant to athletics. With
adidas sponsoringthe Great Britain
Cycling Team this will perpetuate
memories of our successful cyclists in
the Olympics. But then adidas was the
choice of the great Eddy Merckx in the
1970s, long before big time sports
sponsorship and brand awareness.
Chicken now supply the new ’05
range of adidas clothing, specifically
designed for cyclists with many purposeful features and made in well
known Clima materials. Just the stuff
to give cyclists their comfort 365 days
a year with the adidas body mapping
concept that’s reckoned to provide insulation, ventilation and evaporation
where and when it is needed most.
The cycling range underlines the
emphasis on clothing for followers of
sport like so much of the adidas 3
stripe logo leisure wear. There are
plenty of football players and fans of
the sport who spend time cycling at
the weekends. Granted they wouldn’t
call themselves racing cyclists but
when you think 1 million people turned
out to watch the Tour of Britain last
year the cross over to active leisure
cycling in adidas strip is not far away.
The wholesale acceptance of the
adidas brand by the buying public will
inevitably influence cycling across all
levels. The Brits aren’t all into cycle
racing per se but they love sport and
adidas is currently one of the strongest brand names in the marketplace.
adidas is the brand that comes from
the same group who run golf’s Taylor
Made, Salomon in the ski market and
the bike trade’s very own Mavic.

wanted - dealers with a sense of delivery
Realising this is a rewarding market, bike
supplier Mission have continued the development of
trikes for children, especially those with a disability.
Achieved by working closley with therapists and schools
they have changed styling to accommodate a rider’s
special needs. On top of Chopper Trike with 16 and 20"
wheels there’ll soon be a trike with back rest support
and flat pedals for teenagers.
Now Mission need thinking dealers who can see the
potential and work to help deliver the full package. And
deliver is the key word because a trike needs a little
more space to display and get to the customer. “Our
need is to find dealers willing to work this potential” says
Mission boss Dave Wilsher. “We already have quite a
few counties covered but there are areas where we have
no dealerships and twice in the last few days we have
had to ask a school to travel many miles to Threadgolds
of Withenshawe to collect trikes from that shop”.
“Our marketing and publicity attracts direct enquiries
from potential customers all over the country, and we
can then involve the local dealer. But when that dealer
says they can’t deliver a trike on to a disabled customer,
what can we then do? Supplying direct is not really the
option we want, and with the Disability market so huge I
know dealers are missing out. We have to consider the
right to supply direct if we can’t find a retailer who can
help these customers”.
And it’s not just with trikes that the market has a good
response - “The new Piggyback Trike is selling well, It
is terrific for kids with balance problems. A new chrome
16" Trike will be available in the summer with BMX style
parts for yougsters with disabilties, they want to look as
cool as able bodied youngsters. Also available are back
rest with harness and sensible and the easy to use self
levelling pedals. “We’ve put lots of thought into how the
product works, what we now need is an expanded and
responsive dealer network” explains Dave Wilsher.

don’t go missing the trick
The word is congestion, the feeling is rebellion, the
public simply crave an easer way to get around. Two wheels
park better than four, average sized loads are no problem to
carry home and if the customer
doesn’t want to pump the pedals
then sell them a twist and go or a
pedelec. That’s the trick!
Just tell your customers how
much they need you - and remind
them that other than walking every
-where, the lowest cost and the
easiest way of getting around
comes with two wheels, possibly
three. And it’s a clean and more
environmently friendly lifestyle into
the bargain, too.
This Trade & Industry Xtra comes with an introduction to
some new companies and lots of new product that’ll help the
specialist retailer cater for the town rider and the tourist, the
sports enthusiast and the commuter. Spring and summer is
just the time to drive home the message that our kind of travel
can be more than simply pleasant. Avoiding the steep petrol
costs is just one good argument but when you add on the
convenience of having a truly personal bit of gadabout kit
that’s quickly to hand whenever you want it, then who could
avoid being convinced?
There’s no trick about it of course, just tell them the truth.

TfL urges

A campaign is underway to
get Londoners onto their bikes this
spring and summer - the Transport for
London office has commissioned three
‘infomercials’ . The one minute films are
about different types of cyclists, with
families, young professionals and
young people declaring their positive
experiences of cycling in London.
The aim of the infomercials is to get
Londoners to dust down their bikes and
get out and about to enjoy the capital.
Recent research shows that cycling in
London is growing faster than anywhere
in the UK, but there are thousands of
unused bikes on balconies, gardens,
sheds and garages. Rose Ades, Head
of London’s Cycling Centre of Excellence, said: “Cycling is a great way to
enjoy the parks and get a fresh view of
London, particularly now that facilities
are improving and there are many more
cyclists around.
“Unfortunately there are lots of bikes
around that have not been out for a spin
in years.
TfL is committed to making London a
safe and cycle friendly city and is increasing investment in cycling by 40%
in 2005/06 to improve the safety and
convenience of cycling. More secure
cycling parking facilities are being provided, too - 5000 spaces on street, 5000
spaces at schools, all by the end of
2005/6. There is also state of the art
cycle interchange at rail and tube stations.

three of a kind to
help you sell-in
thirsty? peckish? fatigued?
then do something about it!
liquid feed helps beat fatigue - whilst energy bars
will energise the body - and your profits, too
Rehydration and carbo refuelling - you see it everywhere on the
streets, on the sports field and on the tv. It’s a megga-bucks business that
helps keep people out front and it’s a sure till-ringer when you dangle these
mouth watering impulse buys in front of customers.
It’s not all drinks, though, to chew on the go isn’t just a sporting activity
thing either. The healthy alternative to a dried-out sandwich is what you can
offer customers at your counter, the Torq brand has come along and that
has led to this new brand of mouth watering, foil-wrapped eat-well getting
the nod from the bike race following. Torq comes with plenty that appeals to
anyone on the move and needing to stay bright and alert. The hunger-knock
or a parched tongue can easily be avoided - so make your counter the
feeding stop!
Torq bars represent a concentrated form of carbohydrate energy, quite
like other genuine ‘energy bar’ products, but these ones differ by being moist
and easy to eat, whilst remaining very low in fat. This makes the product
unique in that it is highly effective and uncompromised in its function, but
still tastes very good. Fat is often used to moisten energy bars, usually in
the form of a chocolate coating, which
leads to an excess of the ineffective
calories. The huge advantage of the
Torq bar comes from the compact
concentration of effective calories
whilst at the same time it still holds
sufficient moisture for the bar to be
consumed on the move without any
need for extra rehydration.
For rehydation systems or out of a
drinking bottle, Torq energy is a
maltodextrin Glucose Polymer with
no other additives. The dry crystalline powder is mixed with water to
form a flavourless isotonic or hypertonic drink that offers a huge amount
of versatility and situation uses - on
the road or off-road in virtually every
leisure activity or sport or simply
when the weather is sweltering hot
and thirst is rampant. Torq energy can
also be added to food and soups as an ‘invisible calorie’, because it has no
taste. Maltodextrins are used by many professional cycling teams during
tours and stage races to ensure adequate energy balance.
The Torq ribose is said to provide amazing recovery and recuperation
properties. It works differently to carbohydrate-protein recovery mixtures
by directly re-charging the ATP within the muscle cells. Torq ribose doesn’t
represent an alternative to carbohydrate feeding, but more as a supplement
to it. Research shows that ribose supplementation boosts cellular recovery
by 300 to 400%.

why Xtra?
When KSA produce a Trade journal it is to bring
together market intelligence that will put people in
danger of doing business. We have a Bicycle title,
one for Outdoors and another for Scooters and
lightweight urban transport. A long time ago we
found that mixing Trade specifics alongside the
credible alternatives gave readers the chance to
broaden product awareness and open up the new
market opportunities. That’s what this composite
Xtra is about.
