GLACIERS VALLEY (LA VALLÉE DES GLACIERS)
WALKING MAP
SUMMER
The natural site of les Chapieux and the Vallée des
Glaciers is a crossroads between Beaufortain, the
Mont Blanc Massif and Tarentaise, a strategic position
between France and Italy. Located on the legendary
«Tour du Mont Blanc», this route for both major hikes
and gentle walks offers magnificent scenery between
protected Alpine pastures and glacial expanses … a real
ode to escaping the world! In order to safeguard this
protected site, vehicle access is prohibited (Les Chapieux – Ville des Glaciers). Paying buses are provided
from 2 July to 26 August. They connect Bourg Saint
Maurice, Les Chapieux and the Ville des glaciers. Tickets
can be bought from the drivers or in Information Points
(open 7 days a week during July and August). The Ville
des Glaciers can be reached by the path that runs
alongside the bed of the les Glaciers mountain stream.
Return tickets Les Chapieux – Ville des Glaciers 3.50 €
Bourg Saint Maurice – Les Chapieux 6.00 €
Road closed from 9 July to 21 August from 8.30 a.m. to

PREPARATIONS
To ensure that the mountains remain a pleasure for
us all, some good habits and practices are essential.
Mountain walking cannot be improvised and using
maps or even more specific equipment (compass,
altimeter, GPS…) is recommended. This map gives a
general idea of the footpaths. You can obtain maps of
the IGN (UK = OS) type. Some routes present difficulties
related to the weather or snow coverage.

The la Balme refuge (caretaker in summer) is at the foot of the Pierra Menta. In the course of his peregrinations,
Gargantua, stumbled one day upon the Alps. In fury he kicked the mountain hard, so hard that a chip lodged on the
neighbouring ridge. And so the Pierra Menta came into being, a huge rocky molar and the Parozan breach, visible
from the end of the Combe de la Neuva (C.A.F. refuge with a caretaker and light meals). The peace of the lake and
a superb view of the Pierra Menta.
