Parking at Church of the Rock
There are two main parking areas at Church of the
Rock located both east and west of the building. There
is ample parking, so please park in an orderly fashion without blocking any entrances or exits. Please
note: To prevent traffic congestion, at the close of each
day those in the west parking lot will be routed on to
Fennel Street, Seel Avenue to Waverley. Those in the
east parking lot will be routed on to McGillivray Blvd.
The office parking lot will be reserved as an area for
handicapped parking and for officials and guests of
Missionfest Manitoba.
Prayer Room
There is a prayer room located on the east side of the
auditorium. Please feel free to use this area as a quiet
space for personal reflection and as an oasis from the
activity of the weekend.
Nursery Facilities
Parents may wish to take advantage of our (unstaffed)
nursery facilities. The actual location of the nursery is
identified on the map, or may be found by asking one
of the Missionfest hosts.
Food Services
Coffee and snacks will be available for purchase. Also,
there are many wonderful restaurants located within a
short distance from The Church of the Rock.

If you have any questions or need directions during
the weekend, we will have an information desk located near the front entrance of the church. This is also

A special invitation
T
his is a very special year for
Missionfest Manitoba as we take
a concentrated look at the Middle
East. Our focus will not be on politics, geography, eschatology or
even prophecy. While undoubtedly
these areas will be touched upon,
they will not be the central focus.
Rather, we will discover what we as
the Body of Christ need to accomplish in the Middle East today as
presented to us by faithful servants
of the Lord who are serving Him in
this area.
At the time of this writing, there
is significant tension in the land of
the Bible and specifically, a serious
diplomatic crisis looming between
Israel and Iran. It seems appropriate
at this juncture to mention that we
will be hearing from missionaries
serving in both of these countries.
There are differing views that
Christians maintain concerning
eschatology and prophecy, especially when it comes to the land
of Israel and the nations that surround her. This, in itself, is not a
bad thing. However, if the differing views affect our fellowship and
destroy unity then we weaken the
very body of Christ rather than
to participate in building it up.
Additionally, if we become overzealous in forwarding a particular view,
we could minimize the effectiveness, or even endanger our brothers and sisters who are faithfully
serving Christ in the many nations
of the Middle East.
It is my firm belief that while the
call to missions is universal, God’s
plan for each individual is diverse
and unique. This means the Lord
is guiding each of His people to
serve Him in a specific manner in
all countries in the Middle East and
the rest of the world. While I do not
claim to understand the subtleties
of prophecy or eschatology, I am
convinced that the only solution to
Christ is building His
Church with members
who are given a diversity
of spiritual gifts and
who have been given
specific tasks which God
prepared beforehand for
them to accomplish.

I am further convinced that our
eschatological duty is found in
Matthew 24:14 (ESV) “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole
world as a testimony to all nations,
and then the end will come.” Just

to his listeners to “bring back the
King” by somehow participating in
Christ’s mandate to missions.
They will know we are
Christians by our love
So then, how do we approach
the diversity of nations that make
up the Middle East? Christ is building His Church with members who
are given a diversity of spiritual
gifts and who have been given
specific tasks which God prepared
beforehand for them to accomplish. We are required to let our

Him. Also, we will explore ways that
each of us can show Christ’s love to
those who reject Him.
My hope and prayer is that you
will discover (or be affirmed in) the
mission that the Lord has placed
on your heart. I pray you will zealously pursue the task that God has
prepared for you. And finally I pray
that we stand together in unity and
encourage those who are perhaps
called to serve in a different area of
the world.
The Father profoundly loves the
people who live in the world that
He created, and deeply desires that
each person in this troubled world
accept His Son as their Lord and
Saviour. The most mystifying and
mind-blowing thought is that the
Lord has chosen you and me to
express His love to all nations. At
Missionfest you can discover how
Christ is building His Church in
these troubled and war-torn countries. Come and see how He is loving the Middle East.

avid and Karen Davis heard
the gospel on entirely separate
occasions at the same recording
studio in New York City. But they
were both ultimately led to Christ
and set on a path to minister to
Jews and Arabs in Israel.
David is the founder and senior
pastor of Kehilat HaCarmel (Carmel
Assembly) on Mount Carmel in
Haifa, Israel, where his wife Karen
serves as worship director.
The couple has been ministering
to Jews and Arabs in Israel for more
than two decades. The circumstances of their personal conversions
and the worship centre they founded—at the very site where Elijah
confronted Baal’s false prophets (1
Kings 18) —are extraordinary.
In fact God was the furthest thing
from David’s mind in 1980 when he
was an actor on Broadway making a
name for himself. A friend took him
to a recording studio where some
unlikely events would change his
career aspirations.
“I walked into a worship service
there and I had a dramatic encounter
with Jesus. In that fellowship there
were all these different races. I felt I
had come home,” David explains.
Meanwhile, Karen, who had grown
up in a Jewish home in Detroit,
Michigan, was on a spiritual journey
of her own.
“As a musician, I was searching

for the creative spirit that moved
me so much,” she says of her reason for moving to New York. She
got involved in New Age and cult
movements in her quest for truth.
“The Lord brought a young woman into my life and she was the
one He used to introduce me to
[the gospel]. She went to the same
[recording studio] fellowship that
David had been at. The Lord was
just saving people in the performing arts,” Karen says, adding that
at the time she would not have
entered a church building.
“I was radically saved. His love
completely transformed my life,”
she says. “My heart began to break
for the Jewish people.”
Soon after becoming a believer,
David had a burden to go to Israel.
But he would not understand why
until he returned to New York and
met his wife for the first time.
“Karen is a Jew. God had broken the wall between Jews and
Gentiles,” he says.
Their new faith and Karen’s heritage led David to bring her to
Israel. He explains that while they

the principles of prophetic worship.
were there, an Arab woman told
them there was a drug problem
in Jerusalem. “We knew it was the
word of the Lord from an Arab
woman to me and my Jewish wife.”
In 1989 the couple moved to
Israel, and Karen’s Jewish background enabled them to become
citizens there.
The couple started Beit Nitzachon
(House of Victory), a Bible-based
rehabilitation center in Haifa. “We
had been sent to the down-andouters, the drug addicts, the homeless,” says David, who is ordained
with World Challenge International
Ministers’ Fellowship.
Their vision for the House
of Victory and for the Carmel
Assembly, which the the couple
founded in 1991, is Jews and Arabs
joined together as the “one new
man” described in Ephesians 2:15.
Originally, the Carmel Assembly
also met at the House of Victory,
but the Messianic congregation
kept growing. Then in the late
1990s, a British man gave the congregation land on top of Mount
Carmel where they would build their
current worship centre.
“The Lord put us strategically on
the top of Mount Carmel,” Karen
says.
“We want to restore the altar
of the Lord on Mount Carmel like
Elijah did, and we want to raise up
first century believers,” David adds.
Karen and David are also involved
in several humanitarian projects.
Seven years ago, the couple started a woman’s shelter for refugees
from Eritrea and Sudan following

“We are very aware of the sense
that we are in the last days.
We are in a time of preparing for Him. Jewish people will
welcome Him; we are working

the genocide in Darfur.
“Thirty-five thousand people were
allowed into Israel,” David says of
their God-given opportunity to further
minister to Muslims. “The government called us and we were the first
place they started sending people.”
He adds that thousands of
Muslims have turned to Jesus in
recent years.
“Jews and Arabs have come to
the Lord in Israel; they are turning
to Jesus in record numbers,” says
David, whose latest book, The Elijah
Legacy, deals with Israel, Islam and
the Church in the last days.

Iskander shares life with Muslim background believers

agdi Iskander had broken an
Islamic law and was ostracized
from his Sudanese faith community in 1982. His search for forgiveness led him to Jesus and a radical
conversion that would dramatically
change the course of his life.
Growing up as a nomadic Arab in
Sudan, Iskander had been taught to
hate Christians. But a fellow student
at university shared the gospel and
eventually led him to Jesus.
Soon after becoming a Christian,
Iskander was persecuted, jailed for
nine months and repeatedly tortured.
Two of his friends who had also converted to Christianity were executed
before his eyes, and Iskander was
also sentenced to death.
“Miraculously, God helped me
to escape,” he says of his flight
to England in 1985 aboard an
Operation Mobilization ship.
Then faced with the deportation,
he “miraculously” came to Canada in
1988 through an open-door ministry
with Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta.
He has been ministering to
Muslims both nationally and internationally ever since then.
“I have a great burden for reaching my own people. I didn’t get the
opportunity to lead my family to the
Lord. When I look at the Muslims, I
see my family,” Iskander says.
In 1991 Iskander started a Bible
college Arabic ministry. He also
planted three churches in Alberta.
Today his ministry at Al Hayat
(meaning life) Training Centre
reaches out to Arabs and Muslims
in their own communities.
“It’s to train Muslim background
believers (MBB) from all over
Canada in biblical courses,” he
explains.
Iskander brings the gospel and
the message of forgiveness to
Muslims and equips new believers
with a biblical foundation. He also
aims to enlighten churches across
Canada to help them understand
Islam and encourage them to pray
for, and reach out to, Muslims.
Iskander says the biggest barrier
to that mission is the fear instilled
by media and what’s happening in
the Middle East. “There is a lack
of vision and an ignorance about
Islam,” he says.
His work largely focuses on
strengthening MBBs by speaking to
them at conferences. “I believe 100
per cent that God has called me
to minister to Muslim background
believers.”
Iskander’s personal testimony is
a powerful witness that resonates
with other MBBs—most of whom
share similar faith experiences.
“We all have been persecuted
for declaring Jesus as God and
Saviour. Many people have died and
some are in prison,” Iskander says,
adding the majority of Muslims
have also seen Jesus in dreams
and visions in their conversion to
Christianity. “It’s a confirmation for
what we believe.”
In addition to his work nationally,
Iskander travels regularly to refugee
camps in five European countries
and is a pastor of an underground
church. His overseas work aims to
witness to Muslims and encourage
those fleeing religious persecution.
“I have a great love for the family of God,” Iskander says. “God has
saved my life and I will give my all
to Him.”

r. Hormoz Shariat has been
called “the Billy Graham of
Iran.” When asked about this, he
replies humbly.
“I’m just a regular guy—the least
likely to succeed,” he says. “But the
Lord is using [me].”
Shariat is the founder of Iran
Alive Ministries, an organization he
established in 2001 with the specific goal of bringing the gospel message to Muslims.
The ministry has grown and now
reaches people through satellite
TV, leadership development, discipleship, Internet chat, call centres,
underground church planting and
other outreach ministries.
“My number one message is to let
people know what God is doing—
let them know how Jesus himself
is ahead of us and is appearing to
Muslims through visions, dreams
and miracles,” Shariat says.
Shariat’s own faith journey began
through personal study, comparing
the Bible and the Qur’an. Born into
a Muslim family in Iran, Shariat had
grown dissatisfied with the Muslim
faith. He kept asking himself, “Is
Islam true?”
“The reason I had that question
is that I had followed Islam closely
until my teenage years, and it had
done nothing for me,” he says. “I
didn’t have peace, I didn’t have joy;
my relationships hadn’t improved.”
Reading the gospels changed everything.
“The Jesus I met in Matthew was
not the prophet Jesus I found in the
Qur’an,” he says. “He made claims,
he did things, he said things like
the Sermon on the Mount, which I
had never heard before.”
Shariat gave his life to Christ a
few months later. Soon after that,
he left a lucrative job as a research
scientist in the high tech industry
(Shariat has a PhD) to start his ministry.
Shariat says that today, a popular question young people in Iran
are asking is the very question he
asked himself as a young man: Is
Islam true?
People in Iran are open to
Christianity, he says. He points out
that the latest edition of Evangelical
reference guide Operation World
has listed Iran as the #1 fastestgrowing Evangelical population in
the world at 19.6 per cent, per year.
“Most people don’t know that Iran
is that ready” for the gospel, Shariat
says.
He adds that his prayer for
Missionfest Manitoba 2012 is
simple.
“I pray that the Lord will inspire,
encourage and hopefully call out
some of those people and ministries to join us,” he says. “So much
can be done, and I pray more
churches will wake people up to
opportunities in the Middle East,
which number one is Iran.”

How can we pray for the Church in the Middle East?
I
n Operation World, author Jason
Mandryk and his team provide
us with a considerable amount of
data so that we can pray intelligently for the nations of the
Middle East. Jason provides us
with a few general prayer points
that may be effectively incorporated into our prayer time:
The region that witnessed the
birth of the Church now sees its
rapid decline. Large-scale and
sustained emigration after centuries of tenacity has denuded

the Middle East of the bulk of its
Christian communities. For it to
have endured this long, despite
discrimination and persecution, is
remarkable. Now, the rising influence of Muslim extremists increases the pressure to marginalize and
eliminate any Christian presence
in the region. Orthodox Jewish
pressures on Messianic Jews are
also acute. Pray that the ancient
Orthodox and Catholic communities might come to new life and
vigour to become effective witnesses.
Protestant denominations are
few and small, and many struggle with nominalism. They likewise face pressure and persecution, although in a number
of countries they are growing.
Interdenominational relationships

hen Jason Mandryk speaks at
Missionfest Manitoba 2012, it
will be a homecoming. Although the
Operation World author now lives in
England, he was born in Winnipeg
and educated at Providence College.
In fact, it was his studies at
Providence that led Mandryk to
England to work with Operation
World founder Patrick Johnstone.
“As I was starting my undergrad,
I knew I had both a desire and a
calling for full-time Christian ministry but didn’t have any more specific clarity about what that would
entail,” Mandryk says. “As I studied
further I became increasingly convicted that this would be in some
as the Arabian Peninsula) and in
torrents (Iran, Iraq). Pray for:
All who have come to Christ
from such backgrounds. They
have specific spiritual, social and
personal needs that are different from Christians of other backgrounds. Pressures on them are
usually acute—from relatives,
employers and authorities—and
can range from ostracism to martyrdom. For many, emigration is
the only way out of impossible

face of opposition and for faithful-

Johnstone was one of the guest
speakers at Providence College
when Mandryk was working toward
his master of arts in Christian
Global Studies.
“I felt a pretty clear calling to join
the Operation World team and ministry,” Mandryk says of meeting
Johnstone.
Mandryk moved to England in
1994 and has worked on the past
two editions of Operation World,
initially as co-author with Johnstone
and now as author.
Billing itself as “the definitive
prayer guide to every nation,” the
book aims to inform Christians
about the work of the church
around the world through the
use of statistical data and prayer
guides.
The daily, country-by-country
guide has sold more than 2.5 million
copies in seven editions since 1974.

is great potential to communicate
the gospel through the testimony
of believers’ lifestyles, through
their work habits, through their
marriages and through family relationships. Christian homes can
demonstrate profoundly the power
and love of Christ. Pray for those
who have come out of a Muslim
background to witness with both
wisdom and fearlessness.
Trained leadership for the
churches remains a challenge.
In 2006, Christianity Today listed Operation World as one of “the
top 50 books that have shaped
Evangelicals,” calling it a “landmark title that changed the way
[Christians] think, talk, witness,
worship and live.”
During his presentation at
Missionfest, Mandryk will talk about
the work God is doing throughout
the world today.
“I want to highlight some of the
exciting trends and anecdotes
about ways the church is growing
and going from place to place in
all sorts of new and unprecedented
ways,” he says.
“I’d also like to present some of
the challenges and opportunities
that exist in making an impact on
the Muslim world with the gospel,
and sharing Jesus with Muslims
locally and globally.”
Mandryk adds that there is a
lot going on in the world, in the
Church and in mission sending.
Some of it happens in a globally
consistent pattern, and some of it is
relatively isolated or specific to certain regions of the world.

me, and I think it’s instructive
and inspiring and challenging for
Christians regardless of where they
are.”

There are few in training and few
institutions in the Middle East that
can provide it. Many of those who
study in the West find good ministry opportunities there, so few
return home. Training structures
for the underground and MBB
churches also need to be developed further to meet the demands
of these burgeoning groups.

Comedy and illusion duo reveal missions are fun for all
W
hen asked how he is doing,
Greg Wood responds, “Just living the dream.”
Wood and his wife, Oonaugh,
have been performing comedy illusions since 1993, everywhere from
the Winnipeg Fringe Festival to children’s camps in India and Fiji. Now,
they’re returning for their fifth year
as coordinators of Mini-Missionfest.
At the Mini-Missionfest program,
children (and young-at-heart adults)
will see coins appear out of thin air,
cut pieces of rope magically join
together and the famous growing
head illusion, where Wood’s face
appears to blow up like a balloon.
For Wood, effective ministry starts
with fun and laughter. These things
brought him back to church as an
adult, after years of believing it had
become boring and irrelevant.
“For me, I thought going to church
was like going to my aunt’s house
as a child,” says Wood. “She was a
maiden aunt and never had any children, so when you went to visit her,
there were no toys. And you couldn’t
touch things, because they were
breakable. So you sat there and you
had to be good. That’s sort of what
I viewed church as, and I think other
people have that same vision.”
Now the Woods work to show
those stereotypes are nothing but
an illusion. They use comedy and
sleight of hand to break down walls
and get audiences to open up their
hearts and minds again.
“The kids are locked in because
it’s a puzzle, an illusion, a mystery,”
says Wood. “They want to see how
it might be done.”
But it does not end there. For Wood,
Mini-Missionfest is an opportunity to
show kids how they can get involved
in missions, even at their age.
“I talk about the widow’s mite,”
he says. “As a matter of fact, I bring
out and show them what would
have been the widow’s mite, two
small denarii: coins from 2000
years ago. She gave so little, what
would have been enough to buy
one or two slices of bread, even in
those days, and that little bit still
made a difference.”
Wood encourages kids to put
aside one dime a week. Five dollars
is enough to send a child to camp
in India with a full year of follow-up
programming.
“There’s purpose to us being
here,” says Wood, “and that’s to
help the kids learn about missions.
Many of the great missionaries of
the past hundred years got a heart
for the Lord when they were eight
or nine years old. That is what we
try to develop in these kids.”

What I Did During My Summer Vacation
(Missionfest 2011 Revisited)

D
uring Missionfest Manitoba
2011, we focused on the Far
East, and were blessed by hearing
our five keynote speakers share a
variety of stories from various parts
of Asia. Soon after the Missionfest
weekend, it became clear that I
would have an opportunity to return
to Asia for the third time and minister in the Philippines on a shortterm mission trip with Dawn for the
Poor (a partner of OMF).
Then a thought crossed my mind,
which I believe came from the Lord.
If I am already in Asia, why not visit Cambodia! I thought it would
be terrific opportunity to personally visit the ministries that Setan
and Randa Lee told us about during Missionfest. When I spoke with
TransformAsia, not only was it possible for me to visit these ministries,
but discovered that Setan and Randa
would be in Cambodia at that very
same time. What an opportunity!
First, I would have an opportunity to
have a tour of Cambodia with Setan
as my guide and secondly, I can see,
experience and verify the moving
accounts that Setan presented during our main sessions.

I soon learned that
Setan not only told

When I hear a dramatic story,
such as Setan and Randa’s, sometimes I ask myself, “Can all of
this be true?” I soon learned that
Setan not only told the truth, but
that he understated both what
happened and what is currently
happening. Setan and Randa are
both very humble people, and I
am sure that he understated his
story so that he would ensure
that only God would receive the
glory. They know that they could
not have accomplished all of these
things on their own and by their
own strength. They know they are
needed, and continue to need His
strength on a daily basis.
The Killing Fields
Within a few hours of arriving
in Cambodia, I was in “the Killing
Fields.” I have never before come
face-to-face with such an atrocity
—man’s inhumanity to man. I
found myself in the Tuol Sleng
Genocide Museum (Security Prison
S-21). During Pol Pot’s reign
of terror, between 17,000 and
20,000 people were taken to this
prison, tortured and executed.
The crime of the little girl on the
next page was that she attended

school. That tag is not attached
to her uniform, but rather, safety-pinned to her chest. There
are only six known survivors. In
Cambodia, there are over 17,000
known mass-grave sites.
Over two million people were
killed during the Pol Pot regime.
The country is still reeling over
this genocide. And this mad man’s
legacy continues. Over 42% of the
population are under 15 years old
and 85% of the population live in
rural (or jungle) areas. According
to UNICEF, there are 630,000
orphans in Cambodia with 83,000
of these being in facilities such as
TransformAsia’s David Center. The
orphans that are fortunate enough
to get into an orphanage are not
typically there waiting for adoption. This is usually their home
until they are of age. They receive
an education and care. And, if
they are fortunate enough to be
under someone like Randa’s wing,
they receive love.
The other 550,000 or so have to
fend for themselves. No parents,
no home, no food. Sometimes
an older brother will look after a
younger sibling. The pictures (on
page 21) were taken at a feeding
centre that TransformAsia built in
the middle of the jungle—miles
from nowhere. I asked Setan, “Why
did you build this centre here, of
all places?” He replied, “My board
asked me the same question,
because it would be easier (and
cheaper) to build and maintain this
type of ministry in a city. But this is
where God told me to build it.” As
a result, 250 children turn up whenever there is food, which is around
two or three times a week. It is
on a pretty loose schedule, but the
children always seem to know when
there is food, and will file up the
hill. I was profoundly struck by the
beauty and innocence of these children—and by their earnest, sincere
and desperate prayer. Give us this
day our daily bread.
We visited five of TransformAsia’s
facilities that are being used to minister to the people of this hurting
country. Besides the orphanage
and the feeding centre, they run a
day care for the children who live at
the Phnom Penh dump, a women’s
training centre and a safe place for
girls who are rescued from the sex
trade.
One of the things that I noticed
is that, while Setan and Randa only
operate one orphanage, almost
all of their facilities have orphans

ment, this God-fearing couple will
turn no one away.
The beautiful girl above is at risk
to be kidnapped into sexual slavery. At last count, she and her
mother were facing extreme poverty. In this picture she is on a bus,
and leaving after one of my illusion
presentations and she is thanking me. I felt that I did so little for
her, and she still warmly thanked
me. It broke my heart. I pray that
the Lord keeps her safe, and that
she continues to grow in Him.

Mindset
We have a unique opportunity in Canada in that the Middle
East has come to us! However,

work with us or are our neighbours? In this workshop, Wagdi
Iskander will outline methods
to build relationships and share
Christ in a meaningful and
respectful manner which will
build bridges and demonstrate
love.
Wagdi, born into a Bedouin Arab
family, was raised as a Muslim
in the Sudan. After accepting
Jesus Christ as Lord In 1982
his life changed dramatically.
First he was persecuted and
then arrested, along with two
Christian friends, for refusing
to renounce Jesus as Lord. All
three were sentenced to die. His
friends were executed but when
they came for Wagdi, he made
a miraculous last minute escape
and went into hiding until
1985 when he flew to England.
Because of his narrow escape
from death, he has been sometimes called the “Living Martyr.”

David Davis will unlock the
identity of the two olive trees,
as they pertain to Israel, the
Church and the Nations; releasing the anointing of “the two
sons of fresh oil who stand
beside the Lord of the whole
earth” (Zech. 4:14).
David is the founder and senior pastor of Kehilat HaCarmel
(Carmel Assembly) on Mount
Carmel, Israel. The Davises
are also the founders of Beit
Nitzachon (House of Victory)
rehabilitation center in Haifa.
The vision for both of these
ministries is Jews and Arabs
joined together as the “one new
man” of Ephesians 2:15. David
is also the author of The Road
to Carmel, which chronicles his
journey from the world of show
business on Broadway to the
mountains of Israel; and The
Elijah Legacy, which deals with
Israel, Islam and the Church in
the last days.

What on earth is God
doing today?

But, in all of this turmoil, there
is still great hope! The Gospel is
advancing in leaps and bounds.
It was not that long ago when
Christians were fiercely persecuted
and maligned. The Church was
underground, and large-scale evangelism was impossible. But as
God healed the land, He also softened people’s hearts. Both the
Cambodian government and its
people recognized that Christians
were there to help and to love. In
the mid 1990s, the Church was able
to surface from being underground
and has been growing ever since.
TransformAsia alone has planted
hundreds of community churches,
with Cambodian national pastors
shepherding their people.
While these stories are not about
the Middle East, I hope that they
are still relevant for our purposes.
It was only a few years ago when
there was extreme violence and
hopelessness in Cambodia. The
few Christians that were there were
hidden and frustrated, not knowing
what to do. And yet they were
moved to love those who persecuted
them, and through this love, God
softened hearts and changed a
nation. “What does the Lord require
of you but to do justice, and to love
kindness, and to walk humbly with
your God” (Micah 6:8 ESV)

From Fiji to Israel via...Steinbach?
I
t is hard to imagine that there is a
ministry called Island Breeze located near the centre of Canada, and
about as far away from any ocean
as you can get. Nevertheless, Island
Breeze International (YWAM), which
is based in Hawaii, has a regional
discipleship training school (DTS) in
Steinbach (Island Breeze Manitoba).
Their current staff is made up
of folks from Fiji, New Zealand,
Samoa, First Nations, Manitoba and
Saskatchewan. The team will soon
be departing to minister in Israel.
The vision of Island Breeze
Manitoba is “To know the Creator
and make Him known throughout
His inherent gifts and expressions
within the nations.” This is what the
team has been doing as they minister throughout the Canadian north,
and even as far as Cuba. Their
expression of worship is through
their cultural songs and dances.
This not only affirms their goal of
“coming as who we are to God” but
it has also become a tool for evangelism.
One week after Missionfest
Manitoba, Island Breeze Manitoba
will join Roger Armbruster (Canada
Awakening) and other team members from Canada (First Nations and
Inuit) and Greenland, to journey to
Israel. This trip will have representatives of the south and the north
coming together and going to bless
and thank the nation of Israel and
to share the great privilege to be
in the land where our Saviour and
Messiah Jesus Christ walked. They
are planning to visit the Knesset,
army camps, hospitals, schools and
homes, ministering the joy of the
Lord through the dances and songs
of the South Pacific.
Those attending Missionfest
Manitoba will get a taste of these
dances and songs during the
Saturday afternoon main session (3
p.m.) as the group performs some
of the dances and songs that they
will be performing in Israel. It is
a very tangible example of how
Christians from around the world
can show Christ’s love in the Middle
East.

Is There Hope for Europe?
Y
ou do not have to watch the news
very long to become aware that
much of Europe is in an economic
crisis. But what is even more ominous is that Europe is also in a serious crisis spiritually. In fact, when it
comes to missions and evangelism,
Europe is often referred to as “The
New Dark Continent.”
As the New Dark Continent, Europe
is needy . . . not in material terms, but
morally and spiritually. Europe is spiritually adrift and in need of an anchor.
Europe is filled with churches—often
empty, abandoned or converted into
museums, restaurants and shops.
Take away the beautiful church buildings and you’ll be hard-pressed to
see any hints of Christianity. Sadly,
most Europeans don’t have a lifechanging relationship with Jesus or
know anyone who does.

In “Europe: Restoring Hope,”
author Deborah Meroff, of Operation
Mobilization, takes a hard look at
four population groups at the centre of Europe’s heart trouble: marginalized people, Muslims, youth
and nominal and secular Europeans.
She maintains that it is possible to
restore hope to this great continent
when God’s people work together. She further states that Europe
is very likely a battleground for
the future of global Christianity.

For Missionfest 2013, we will turn
our eyes toward Europe. We will
devote a significant portion of the
conference to European spiritual
issues. At the time of publication,
we have engaged two of the most
respected authorities on missions
and evangelism in Europe, Stuart
McCallister and Jeff Fountain.
Stuart McAllister currently serves
as North American Regional Director
and Vice President of Training at Ravi
Zacharias International Ministries’
(RZIM’s) international headquarters in
Atlanta. Born in Scotland, Stuart saw
his life changed by Christ at the age of
twenty. His desire to serve the Lord led
him to join Operation Mobilization in
1978. Stuart has since served as general secretary of the European Evangelical
Alliance and has been involved with the
European Lausanne Committee. He
joined RZIM in 1998 as the International
Director. Stuart speaks worldwide with
a passion for the gospel.
Jeff Fountain is director of the
Schuman Centre for European
Studies. Originally from New
Zealand, Jeff was European director
of YWAM for 20 years until two years
ago. He has been involved in the
Hope for Europe movement since
the early ‘90’s, and was organiser of
the HOPE.21 and HOPE.II congresses held in Budapest in 2002 and
2011 respectively. Jeff has written several books including “Living
as People of HOPE,” and “The Little
Town that Blessed the World.”

Ordinary Christians needed to impact Muslim lives
TORONTO, ON—Missions to the
Muslim world have changed dramatically in the past 20 years, says
‘Kevin,’ area coordinator for OM
(Operation Mobilization) in the
Middle East and North Africa.
While security concerns keep him
from sharing his full name, he is
deeply enthusiastic for the growing
opportunities for ordinary Canadians
to impact the lives of Muslims.
Kevin visited Canada this fall for
meetings with The Arabian Peninsula
Network (APN). This global network
brings together ministries from
around the world who have an interest in God’s work among the indigenous people of countries like Saudi
Arabia, Yemen and Qatar.
He explains interagency partnerships are leading to more effective
regional field collaboration for the
sake of the gospel.
“We’re looking at questions like,
‘What is God already doing? What
tools are available? How can we work
together to see the gospel go out?
How can people in Canada be a part
of that?’”
Over a dozen partners are
involved, including Open Doors,
WEC, International Teams, Frontiers,
Pioneers, TEAM, MECO and Feba.

program of Canadian Mennonite
University (CMU), creating an enriching journey of serving and learning
for high school graduates ages 17 to
22. We offer a two-semester program
with locations in Canada plus South
Africa or Guatemala, as well as a fourmonth program centering on French
Africa. Outtatown attracts students
seeking a life-changing experience of
travel, Christian study, service and
adventure, helping students to know

“Something is happening,” he
says. “More Muslims are logging into
Internet discussion sites, looking for
Bibles and watching the Jesus video.
And there are a lot of Christians
working together from around the
world to make sure people have the
opportunity to hear the gospel.”
Not only has the Internet allowed
more Muslims to safely look into
issues of faith, it has given ordinary Christians new opportunities to
engage in prayer.
“Thanks to the Internet, Christians
in Canada can now join hands with
people in Australia and Korea and
Singapore to pray for the immediate
need of an underground Christian,”
Kevin says.
“This prayer is one of those strategic things we need more people to
be a part of. It is vitally important.
There are real changes we have seen
in the lives of people in the Arabian
Peninsula today that I can trace back
to what happened when Christians
began to pray for places they’d never heard of.”
He adds one of the greatest assets
in the spread of the gospel today
are professionals who are willing to
take work in the area, in their chosen field.

“The front line of missions is the
market place,” Kevin says. “There are
a ton of good, well-paying jobs in the
region and companies that are looking to hire qualified professionals.
It’s in that market where people can
meet Muslims in a normal life situation, and have the opportunity to find
out what matters to you, what gets
you through the day, how you deal
with your family and what gives you
that peace, which is based in God.”
This year OM is celebrating 50
years of ministry in the Muslim
world. They currently have about
1,000 workers focusing on Muslims,
in 50 countries around the world.
They are looking for more professionals willing to make a career shift
to a job in the Arabian Peninsula.
Fraser Churchill, director of development for OM, says, “If somebody
has a question, it would be nice if
there was someone who identified
themselves as a Christian in their
workplace or in their neighborhood,
who they knew they could talk to.
To be that person who says, ‘I’m a
believer, if you ever want to talk.’”
Kevin adds, “You don’t necessarily need theological training to be
qualified for mission. You need to
be exactly the person God made you
to be, and be that light in someone
else’s life.”
