Fall is in the air, and so is cooler weather. Remember that we go out for recess each day
unless there is rain or the temperature is below 20 degrees. Please send students
dressed appropriately. We have just wrapped up our Walk-a-Thon for the year. As of
today we have raised $13,000.00! That is a fantastic amount of money! Thanks to
local businesses for donating $1750.00 of that amount. Our Rocket Boosters have again
worked very hard organizing, counting money, and securing outside sponsors to pay for
prizes. Thanks for all your effort in helping your child raise money for Schmitt Elementary. We are looking at increasing our supply of Smartboards and other technology for
the classrooms. We have been in school nearly a full nine weeks. Time has flown by
quickly! It is time to allow students to walk to class by themselves. Monday, Oct. 10 will
be Schmitt’s “Independence Day”. That will give you time to practice with your child so
they can demonstrate to you that they are independent and can walk to class by themselves. This is also a reminder to not walk your child across California Street. If there
is a reason you need to come into the building, please park on 27th Street. This year we
are planning our Fall Parent/Teacher conferences for the week of Nov. 7. Your child’s
teacher will be contacting you to set a time to meet and discuss academic progress. We
will make all attempts to coordinate siblings’ conference times. Please be watching for
the conference notes to come home. We are still in need of volunteers for Minds on Math
and Book Buddies. If you have an hour to spare a week, let us know and we will get you
signed up! Enjoy your Fall Break on Oct. 20 and 21.

It is that time of year again to think about collecting and sending in Box Tops for
Education. The easiest way to send in Box Tops is to put them in a Ziploc baggie
or envelope. We will be having a contest; the class that has the highest percentage
of participation in the Box Tops Program will receive an ice cream party in April.
Please place your box tops in a baggie or envelope and write your child’s name,
their teacher’s name, and their grade on the baggie/envelope. If you prefer to use a
collection sheets, they will be available outside office. We will continue collecting
box tops all year. We have a goal of at least $1500.00 for the 2011-2012 school
year so please help us again this year!
Please submit your answers to Mrs. Dickinson by October 20st, 2011. All correct
answers will be eligible for a prize drawing.

Do you know when to change the batteries in
your smoke alarms? To ensure your smoke
alarms work when you need them, change your
batteries at least once a year. Install a new battery of the proper type and never use rechargeable batteries. On Sunday, November 6, we will
be moving our clocks back. As a reminder, when
you change your clock, change your batteries
too. It could save you and your family.
