Press Release: December 2012
Outfitters Kauai’s New Facelift:
New Ziplines, Jaw-Dropping Views and Big Fun.
Outfitters Kauai, the company that first
introduced ziplining to the island of Kauai, is
trailblazing again. In the spirit of innovation,
Outfitters Kauai has given operations a huge
facelift and added six exhilarating lines to an
already action-packed and popular zipline
adventure experience.
The new ziplines tie into Outfitters’ existing
course, passing secluded waterfalls and offer
incredible new views as guests soar above
lush jungle valleys. The lines measure 1000
foot each, and feature two side-by-side
cables, giving guests the unique chance to
double their fun by zipping next to a friend
or family member.
Outfitters has put together a diverse zipline
course including platform-to-platform
ziplines, centerdismount, and even a Zippel,
that combines ziplining with rappelling.
The center-dismount zip, like the company’s
popular signature 1800 foot tandem zipline,
has a unique design allowing for speeds and
ride times unmatched on Kauai.
The new ziplines are intended to highlight
the spectacular scenery of Kipu Ranch,
made famous by movies like Jurassic Park,
Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, the
Descendants and more. These new lines
were built with the collaborative aid of a
professional zip line consultant, an islandbased architect, a local pole line contractor
and a Kauai helicopter company. Invasive

vine and tree species such as Cat’s Claw
and Java Plum have been removed by an
arborist to provide for view corridors, safety
clearances; making an improved environment
for Hawaiian introduced trees like the Ul’u
(breadfruit) and Kuku’i (candlenut).
Outfitters Kauai offers an unforgettable way
to experience Kauai’s natural beauty up close.
Adventure lovers of all levels can experience
the thrill of a lifetime.
Company Profile: Outfitters Kauai has been an
innovative adventure company since they
first opened doors in 1988. In 2003, Outfitters
Kauai’s owner, Rick Haviland, inspired by a
National Geographic article about canopy
tours in Costa Rica, constructed and opened
Kauai’s first zipline. Nearly 10 years and 11
ziplines later, Outfitters Kauai is pushing the
envelope again with their latest creation.
But innovation is nothing new to Outfitters
Kauai. They have been leading the market
for years, starting in 1989, when they
received the first permit in the State of
Hawaii to run guided sea kayak tours from
State facilities. Outfitters Kauai was also an
initial permitted operator of guided kayak
tours of Wailua River State Park and Na Pali
Coast, the 15-mile breathtaking coastline
on Kauai’s North Shore. And of course, the
signature Waimea Canyon Bicycle Downhill
tour started up in ‘94, an adventure unique
to the company.

Press Release: February 2012
The Newest Water Sport Craze Hits Kauai.
Outfitters Kauai’s Stand Up Paddle Board Tour is the First of its Kind in Hawaii.
Outfitters Kauai—Kauai’s innovative adventure tour leader— announces its first full
summer of the Kauai Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Board Tour. This tour, which is the first of
its kind in Hawaii, delivers “Big Fun in Beautiful Places” via the newest sensation in
watersports. The Surftech epoxy boards that are provided are floaty, stable, and fast.
This SUP tour is suitable for both the experienced paddler and the first timer— it’s a
great way to learn a new sport, or share it with friends or family and get turned on to
the coolest new thing going. Think walking on water!
Outfitters Kauai’s Kauai Stand Up Paddle Board Tour begins with a short lesson
around the calm waters of the Hule‘ia River. During the tranquil downwind cruise the
adventurers can refine their technique while enjoying the spectacular scenery of the
Hule’ia National Wildlife Refuge, ringed by the majestic Hau’pu Mountains.
This new tour also includes a one mile hike through the tropical rain forest of Kipu
Ranch, where Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park were filmed. This lovely hike
leads to the secluded Bamboo Pool, home to the crowd-pleasing WaterZip—a short zip
line into a waterfall-fed pool. Lunch is served on the sunny decks above Bamboo Pool.
Rather than paddling back to the Outfitters’ dock into often brisk tradewinds, an exotic
motorized Hawaiian-style canoe ferries the adventurers back up the river as the SUPs
are towed behind it.
It is not often that a new sport causes such a commotion like Stand Up Paddle Boarding
has in recent years. This fun activity has exploded onto the scene providing hours of
entertainment and fitness to paddlers of all ages and abilities. Now Outfitters Kauai
combines this exciting new activity with the splendor and memorable beauty of
Kauai. For seasoned and experienced travelers who have zip lined, kayaked and “been
there, done that,” Stand Up Paddle Boarding is fresh and exciting. For new visitors to
Kauai, the SUP tour is a fantastic way to experience Kauai’s natural beauty. Outfitters’
Kauai Stand Up Paddle Board Tour, open this summer to make unforgettable family
memories.
If you’d like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview with Rick Haviland please call

Paddle. Ride. Fly.
Join us for an action packed day of adventures fit for the whole family!
Start with a leisurely two mile kayak on the Hule’ia River listening to
the sounds of tropical birds and hearing the stories of ancient Hawaii.
Hike from the riverbank to swimming holes and waterfalls where you’ll
swing like Tarzan into a pristine, fresh-water pool. Climb aboard our
one-of-a-kind farm wagon and take in the spectacular views of Kipu
Ranch--made famous in films like Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean,
the Descendants and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Enjoy a hearty picnic lunch.
Marvel at the beauty as you traverse the lush rain forest on swinging
bridges that float and sway in the treetops above the wilderness floor.
Soar above a lush tropical valley on your first of two ziplines. Hike a

ride of a lifetime, our new, impossibly long, tandem, center dismount
zipline. Pair up with a friend and soar over a quarter of a mile above wild

stream-fed swimming pool. It’s the perfect place to cool off from the
day’s adventure with cliff jumps and our popular Waterzip Zipline!
When you are refreshed and ready to go, walk on down to the riverbank.

The Nui Just Got Nui-Er!
Our Zipline Trek Nui Loa was Kauai’s greatest
zipline adventure and now it’s even faster, higher,

We’ve opened up three brand new super-fun

of our original lines, amping up the adrenaline in
this already popular adventure. That brings the
Nui Nui Loa to a jaw-dropping total of nine lines.
Take in the spectacular sights from a series of
suspension bridges, aerial walkways, and an
amazing tree house.
We’ve put together a really diverse zipline
course. You’ll be riding platform-to-platform
ziplines, center-dismount, and even a zippel,
that combines ziplining with rappelling. Our
center-dismount type lines are unique, allowing
for speeds and ride times unmatched on Kauai.
And hang on for a ride that’s wild, and wet! Our
WaterZip is fun for everyone.

About Us - Company & Key Staff
Founders Rick and Julie Haviland
Rick grew up in Wisconsin in an old farmhouse at the end of a long gravel road, on a big
lake with a corn field across the road. As a boy he loved to play on the water in the summers
sailing and canoeing, and enjoyed winter sports like skiing, skating, and iceboating. He
became a lineman as a young man and was able to fulfill his boyhood dream of being an
every-day skier in the Rocky Mountains by working on the road during summers climbing
poles, and skiing everyday all winter. When he was offered a line job on Kauai in 1982 he
jumped at the chance to live near the ocean and learn about Hawaii watersports.
Julie is a Northern California girl who grew up waterskiing, riding motorcycles, and
snowmobiling. She graduated from Chico State University with a degree in Recreational
Therapy, and moved to Kauai, also in ’82, to be with friends and windsurf. She worked as a
social worker and became the Director of the Kauai Shelter for Family Violence Victims. She
and Rick were fixed up by a mutual friend on a blind date and soon were having fabulous
times together in the early days of windsurfing, kayaking, and mountain biking on Kauai. As
they discovered new places to go and new things to do, they started to dream about sharing
their wonderful experiences with island visitors, and decided to see if they could make
a go of it.
They wanted to do it right, and began to pursue acquiring governmental permits to operate
guided tours on Kauai, and in 1988, received the first permit in the State of Hawaii to run
guided sea kayak tours from State facilities. They opened Outfitters Kauai, in Poipu, in the
fall of that year, and in the ensuing years have had a great time developing fun new things
to do and making people’s vacation dreams come true. Outfitters Kauai was also an initial
permitted operator of guided kayak tours of Wailua River State Park and Na Pali Coast,

which is a 15-mile wilderness coastline on Kauai’s
North Shore. Waimea Canyon Bicycle Downhill tours
were started up in ’94. In 1999 Outfitters negotiated
land and water use agreements to enable an
innovative guided kayaking tour on Hule’ia River
that allows participants to paddle downwind
through a National Wildlife Refuge location that
was a backdrop to the film Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The tour group hikes to waterfalls located at the
famous Kipu Ranch, and returns to their private
dock by an exotic doubled- hulled motorized
Hawaiian canoe.
Rick’s past work as a pole climbing lineman and
his cable handling skills came in handy when, in
2003, he was inspired by a National Geographic
article about canopy tours in Costa Rica, and
constructed and opened Kauai’s first zipline
alongside a Kipu Ranch site used in the filming of
the movie Jurassic Park. Since then, Outfitters has
continued to innovate, bringing together more
ziplines, waterfalls, canopy walkways, treehouses,
rappelling, suspension bridges, and even waterzips
for the enjoyment of their guests. After over 25
years, Outfitters Kauai is still doing new things all
the time, and still making people’s vacation dreams
come true.
The Havilands reside at a garden home in Oma’o,
just outside the Poipu resort area, with their two
dogs and two cats. Their daughter Nalani, who
came along in 1990, is a dean’s list college studentathlete in California. And they still go kayaking
together every chance they get.

General Manager
Cesare Lucente
Cesare Lucente developed a love for travel and
adventure at a young age when he began spending
high school summers away from his hometown Kansas
City, Missouri to work for a family friend in Belize
City, Belize. After obtaining a BA in Sociology from
Regis University in Denver he set out on several years
of working vacations spent hiking, skiing and rock
climbing around the western United States and Central
America before heading back to Kansas City to help
run the family restaurant. Here he met his future wife
of part Hawaiian descent and was introduced to Kauai
on a trip to meet her family. After seeing the beauty
of Kauai the couple packed their bags and took up
permanent residence on the island in 2001.
Answering a want ad for a bicycle/kayak guide
position landed Cesare at Outfitters Kauai where he
found his true calling. Taking guests on adventure
tours around the amazing island of Kauai seemed
a job too good to be true. His tales of past rock
climbing adventures caught the ear of owner Rick
Haviland who asked him to help develop a zipline
tour program. Their diverse experiences with rope
and cable management along with a mutual passion
for adventure and innovation produced a unique
and exciting product. Over the years the two have
collaborated on many more tour development projects
and created amazing adventures for their guest to
enjoy. Cesare has moved from Quality Assurance
Manager to Operations Manager to his current role as
General Manager.
