Participants highlighted the professionalism of the organization, the work of the volunteers, and the friendly and close relationship. Of course, they are also surprised by the beauty of the routes in Alava. And besides, they are hooked by the last stage of the event, which runs through an entire city turned over to give encouragement and warmth to triathletes. This is how we are punctuated by triathletes who discover this modest competition, with an unique nature and strength, because once you taste its experience, you won’t fail in coming yearly to our annual event. We have already had ten editions and an assessment that make us being rated with a ten, because what started as a dream has become a major sporting event with a view on other European and international competitions that have little to envy the big event today day has become the Triathlon of Vitoria. This we know, year after year, all those triinternational athletes, marveling at what here are, repeated and increasingly attract foreign participants, including some of the largest, reaching double the number of last year. This great event, the biggest sporting event that envolves the citizens of Vitoria, has the great virtue of, in addition to strengthening sport and placing Vitoria as city of reference in the long distance triathlon, placing the city and Alava on the international map with all its tourist potential and services and provide a direct economic return over 5 million euros. The Vitoria-Gasteiz International Triathlon has a major impact in local, national and international print media, television, radio and the Internet, with a national audience alone of over 38 million and a forecast of €1,276,587, according to 2015 data offered by Kantar Media. Moreover, to the extent that foreign participation is increasing every year and that it already represents 13.5% of total participants (double the 2015 event), international television stations and other media increasingly broadcast the event, and specialised professionals from the United Kingdom, Portugal, France, USA and Canada visit the city to make sure they don’t miss the event and can cover it live, annually. The Vitoria-Gasteiz International Triathlon, in addition to being a first class sports event, offers incalculable value to the city and its brand, as well as to the province and country, given that the event has major economic and media impact that goes beyond sports. The race contributes may values to the city and its people, some of which are tangible and can be measured through economic indicators, yet others are more difficult to measure and are intangible, but no less important. The direct impact, after calculating the expenditure by the 2296 participants (local and foreign) and their companions who will go to the city in the days before the event, is estimated to be nearly 1.9 million euros. We therefore conclude that this year every euro invested by public institutions will be multiplied by 26.6 euros. A recent survey of the participating triathletes* has verified that the average overnight stay in Vitoria is 2.25 nights per person, which is far higher than the annual average by visitors to the province. Moreover, every triathlete is accompanied by an average of 4 people, given that the race is a challenge in which the whole family and friends participate. These data represent a total of 26,352 expected overnight stays, which means 100% hotel occupancy in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in addition to the need for lodging in other hotels of the province and in Miranda de Ebro. The Vitoria-Gasteiz Triathlon is already one of the best in the world, due to both its comprehensive organisation, including the participation of numerous associations, and due to the fact that the city’s population gives its best as a participant, as a volunteer and as a public, therefore getting involved and becoming the heart of the event. An epic event is thus created, with a festive, passionate and enthusiastic atmosphere without comparison in other races. * Estudio de Satisfacción y Posicionamiento de Triathlon Vitoria-Gasteiz. Universitat Oberta de Catalunya http://www.triathlonvitoria.com/galeria/EXTRACTO%20DE%20MEMORIA_PARA%20PRESENTACION.pdf 75% of the indirect impact in the province derived from organising the event is passed on to local suppliers. Furthermore, the induced impact derived from preparing for this sporting event by triathletes of the province of Álava throughout the entire year amounts to 969,680 euros. With these data in hand from the 2015 event, we can confirm that in this year’s event we’ll succeed in turning every euro invested in the event by the Historical Province of Álava into 26.6 euros.
