Park Sookeun (Korean 1914-1965)
A Seated Woman Signed in Hangul, Oil and Mixed
Media on Board, Retains the original frame, 10
1/2" X 8 1/2". Dated 1956 verso and retains
original paper label. Provenance: Howard A. Rusk
(1901-1989), known as the father of rehabilitation
medicine originally from Brookfield, Mississippi
joined the Army Air Corp in 1942 and retired as a
Brigadier General. In the early 1950’s Dr. Rusk founded the Institute
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, New York University Medical
Center, In 1984 the center was renamed Howard H. Rusk Institute of
Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Rusk and his wife traveled to Korea on
several medical missions between 1953-1967. He was also elected
president of the American Korean Foundation (1954). Dr. Rusk was
supported by several prominent individuals for his humanitarian
efforts. A major supporter was Bernard and Alva Gimbel. Mrs.
Gimbel had assisted Dr. Rusk on one of his trips to Seoul, Korea where
she acquired a painting by the artist Park Sookeun. This painting has
been consigned from a family member and has never been out of the
family since it was acquired in the 1950’s.
