By setting up in the Chamonix Valley, France's National
Skiing and Mountaineering School has come to the heart
of the perfect 'playground' for getting to grips
with all snowsports at all levels.
ENSA, which trains instructors, guides and
piste patrol staff is, at the heart of alpine skiing.
This Chamonix institution has been going for more
than 70 years, experiencing, accompanying and
encouraging the changes in the sport. Stéphane Deloche,
a lecturer at the school, runs the French demonstration
skiing team which takes part in Interski every four years.
"At ENSA we consider that a good skier must also be an
elegant skier, a stylist. Events like Interski* are designed
to compare, at a European level, methods, techniques
and ways of playing with the snow.
It's a really useful kind of 'teaching laboratory'."
SKIING IN ALL ITS FORMS
In the Valley, the first pair of skis
was made in… 1893, by a local craftsman.
At the time, skiing was simply a way
of getting around. Today, different forms
of skiing have developed, from the most
common to the most unusual: alpine skiing,
cross country, freestyle, telemark, skiing
for the disabled, speed riding and more…
There is a host of ways to enjoy snowsports,
on your own, with the family or with your
friends, from amateur to expert level.
* Interski: a convention that brings together all the
countries where skiing and snowboarding are practised.

If we were to show you the places where Aurélien Ducroz
goes freeriding, you just wouldn't believe us.
That's what freeride is about: you 'read' the face you're
about to descend from the valley, seeking out a route
between the couloirs, rocky outcrops and vertiginous drops,
and then you go for it, buzzing with adrenaline.
Aurélien Ducroz, 2011 World Champion in the discipline,
divides his time between 'Cham' where he was born
and Brittany where he practises another high-octane sport,
offshore yacht racing.

He tells us about his playground. "Our valley is a paradise
for freeriders.

DRENALINE RUSH
Now you can get into freeriding on special
courses where you'll learn to read the terrain,
follow the planned route and study snow science.
The Grands Montets ski area is the perfect
place for getting to grips with freeriding.
Not only are the different freeriding spots extremely
varied, but the vertical drop is often more than 2,000 m,
which gives you the time to really get into the descent.
There are plenty of outstanding faces like the Couloir
des Cosmiques and the Grand Envers, but there are also
routes such as the Pentes de l’Hôtel at Le Brévent,
which are a bit more accessible providing you have
lots of off-piste experience. But be careful: safety is
paramount in what we do."
What's more, in 2012 Chamonix-Mont Blanc
is hosting an event on the famous Freeride World Tour.
In addition, Les Houches has a snowpark designed
for freestyle addicts.

There are those who like climbing mountains and
those who prefer to look at them. Lionel Wibault,
who is both a mountain guide and an artist,
likes to combine his two passions.
THE VALLÉE BLANCHE

REMAINS AN ADVENTURE!
The Vallée Blanche is his domain, and he never gets tired
of it. "Skiing the Vallée Blanche, even when you've done
hundreds of descents, always remains an adventure…
The impressive second section of the Aiguille du Midi
cable car, the safe but exposed “arête” you have to walk
along before you can put your skis on, and of course
the never-ending descent in unique surroundings.
Anyone who can ski a red run will find this amazing
experience within their capabilities."
A High mountain guide is stongly recommended on this
glacier descent which is neither marked nor patrolled.
For the artist and guide, each descent is an opportunity to
soak up the atmosphere, the light and the experience,
so he can reproduce it on canvas.

Like his father Marcel, a well-known artist, Lionel Wibault
spends his time exploring his valley either on skis
or with paintbrush in hand. "Painting has given me
a visual memory of places which is really useful
as a mountain guide… and I also love sharing with my

Jean-Paul Pierrat is a big name in nordic skiing.
He is the only Frenchman to have won the Vasaloppet,
the legendary race that every cross-country ski racer
has in his sights.

He lives in Servoz, indulging in his passion right at the foot
of Mont Blanc.

"Nordic skiing in the Chamonix Valley is perfectly possible
and it can even be a unique experience, for addicts
and beginners alike.
Watching chamois, following fox tracks
and listening… to the silence. Snowshoeing
is the perfect way to explore the unspoilt
countryside of snow-covered orchards
and frozen lakes around Servoz.
Throughout the valley you'll find waymarked
trails at all altitudes.
From Les Houches, the Prarion gondola lift takes you up
to 1,800 m for some fantastic skiing: guaranteed snow cover
and the ideal exposition, and, not forgetting a panorama of
high-altitude mountains that is quite rare in this discipline,
where one is more used to wooded valleys…
The Bois du Bouchet and Argentière are more conventional
but offer some lovely runs which you can often link together
in the winter. Servoz and Vallorcine also have some really
accessible trails, ideal for beginners.
All in all, as for alpine skiing, there's something for every
taste and every level, with about fifty kilometres of trails!"

With a PhD in geology, Sylvain Coutterand is studying
the retreating glaciers.
Opposing preconceived ideas is part of his job.
"Yes, the glaciers are retreating; everyone can see that.
But glaciers are not static; they change. During the Bronze
Age they were smaller than they are today in our valley!"

The Chamonix Valley is home to
countless ski touring routes
lasting from one to several days.
For Sylvain, nothing beats in-situ observation.
"Even in winter, when the glaciers are less active
if you're careful you can get up close to them, and
the Chamonix Valley is one of the few valleys in Europe
where that's possible. My tip would be a snowshoeing walk
no longer than an hour and a half: the Chalets du Cerro,
with the jumble of the Glacier des Bossons towering above.
For both children and adults, seeing a glacier close-up
is an incredible experience. If you want to find out more,
come along in the summer!"

"What's this new skijoring all about?"
Actually, it's one of the oldest snowsports around.
People in Scandinavia started skiing along while being
pulled by reindeer 4,000 years ago! More recently,
there was a skijoring club in Chamonix in 1900.
SKIJORING: SKIING HELL FOR
LEATHER
Today, skijorer Pascal Berguerand, who is passionate
about this off-the-beaten-track sport, offers introductory
rides in Vallorcine. "To have a go at skijoring you don't have
to be a champion. All you have to be able to do is take
a ski tow! The same can't be said for the driver, who has
to be an experienced carriage driver. We have a special
circuit of nearly 900 metres which you can ride at a walk,
a slow ride, or at a fast gallop if you're experienced…
In skijoring everyone can enjoy themselves at their own
pace, including the horses because they love the snow."
BE A MUSHER
FOR AN HOUR!
Driving a dog team is a unique
and very accessible experience.
Skijoring is also available in Les Houches with Christophe
André, a skijoring driver and high mountain guide.
Professional mushers offer a 15-minute

He's a musician, composer, frequent figure on television,
festival organiser, keen traveller…
Where does André Manoukian get all that energy from?
The answer could well be: Chamonix. André Manoukian may
be in the media spotlight but he's far from behaving like a
'celeb'. He has chosen to settle in this valley
which his family has fallen in love with. "One day, my wife
suggested we get the children into school and come
and live here. My work is very much centered in Paris,
and I thought it would make life difficult.
But actually it's a great source of balance for me, a real
breath of fresh air. I spend as much time in the mountains
as I can. I go telemarking and cycling at my own level;
in other words I'm no good, but it suits me! Here I come
across people who surpass themselves and push
themselves to the limit, but they don't brag about it and
they've been enthusiastic about my musical projects…"
Because André Manoukian, who never keeps still, has great
plans for Chamonix. "At the moment, the town attracts
a lot of 'electro' musicians; It’s the influence of the freeride
scene and it creates a lot of nice surprises. But I think
the valley can become a big place for jazz.
There's already our summer festival 'Cosmo Jazz' in July,
featuring some great music in stunning landscapes,
but my dream is to take it further, creating for example
artists' residencies that would enable musicians from all
backgrounds to come together and create projects in these
inspiring surroundings." Feel like a jam? Come to Cham!

Until 1860 the Chamonix Valley was an integral part
of Italy's Piedmont region, and this explains the very strong
links that today still unite Chamonix with the valleys
on the other side of the Alps.
If there is one area of life that knows no borders
it is certainly gastronomy, as Pierre Carrier, the founder
of the 'Maison Carrier' who runs two famous restaurants
is fond of saying. "People often think that the local cuisine
is about no more than fondue and tartiflette.
But the first of these is from the Valais, and the second
is a fairly recent creation. The 'Mont Blanc' cuisine knows
no borders. It draws inspiration from the French side
but also from the Aosta Valley in Italy and the Valais in
Switzerland. Italian delights such as truffles and Fontina
cheese have their place on the table here, alongside
vegetables from the Arve Valley, veal and pork
and the incomparable chimney-smoked hams."

visitors to the valley. For them, it's a family tradition.
"We've been coming here to recharge our batteries
for four generations; it really is the perfect place
for a holiday and the kids love it!
In both summer and winter, it's a really pretty valley.
Our children learned to ski at the age of three…
The valley has great facilities for kids. And then there's
sledging, swimming, the museums, the skating rink or simply
walks in the snow; here, we're never short of things to do!"

When you're at the foot of Mont Blanc, you inevitably turn
towards the mountains. But, in our Valley, the roofs,
façades, windows and doors also have plenty of stories
to tell.

The valley's museums offer different approaches
to Alpine culture.
"You have to look beyond the rather stereotypical image
of the mountain chalet or Alpine farmhouse.
With the Maison de l’Alpage in Servoz, the Musée
Montagnard et Rural in Les Houches, the Musée Alpin
and the Musée du Montenvers et de la Mer de Glace in
Chamonix, you have plenty of opportunity to uncover
our treasures. The Espace Tairraz in Chamonix is now
home to the brand new mountaineering centre,
as well as the Museum of Crystals, a particularity
of the valley.
If you look closely you'll notice that all the buildings differ
considerably from one village to another. What's more,
our valley has experienced a tourism boom and the streets
bear traces of different periods: Art Nouveau, Art Deco
and neoclassicism rub shoulders with buildings from
the 1930s and 1970s which really deserve to be understood
and appreciated.
Our heritage guides offer guided tours of
the Chamonix Valley.
These days we are also rediscovering the area's historical
holiday villas, the 'extravagances' that have left us with
some little architectural gems. Learn to take your time
as you walk around: our valley deserves it!"

adventurer and explorer
The Chamonix Valley's biggest legend was born… in Paris.
Roger Frison-Roche, the legendary author of THE classic
French mountaineering book Premier de Cordée, took
a little piece of his valley with him to the furthest reaches
of the Sahara desert. His daughter Martine Charoy FrisonRoche keeps the memory of this outstanding mountaineer
alive. "My father was the first person not born in Chamonix
to get in to the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix,
which at the time was a very select group.
ROGER FRISON-ROCHE, FROM CHAMONIX
TO THE HOGGAR
His parents were from the Beaufort region and as
it happened he was born in Paris, arriving in the valley
before the 1924 Winter Olympics, for which he was the
secretary. Most French mountain enthusiasts are familiar
with Premier de Cordée and Frison-Roche's fascination
for the Hoggar Mountains in southern Algeria. But in
addition to his writing, he worked actively to encourage
'La Compagnie', which he referred to as his "second
family", to open up internationally and provide its guides
with a modern status and modern standards of protection.
Today he lives on in the hearts of everyone who knows
that a passion for mountaineering knows no borders."

"The easiest way to come here is to use the fast and
frequent coach service. What surprises visitors who
come to the Aosta Valley is both the similarities and
the differences! You are in Italy, but at school the children
are taught in French. You are 25 minutes from Chamonix,
but in the mountain restaurants you'll discover Valdostan
gastronomic specialities. Until 1860 we were part of
the same kingdom, and we remain close cousins today,
sharing the same great treasure: Mont Blanc."

"I first came to Chamonix in 1989, but it was not
until 1995 that I came to live here, working as
a hair stylist at the foot of Mont Blanc. Here,
I've learned both French and snowboarding!"
Eva was more successful than she ever dreamed,
becoming French and Swedish moguls champion.
Having achieved that, she took up freeride
snowboarding, where she picked up three
consecutive world titles at Xtreme Verbier.
The Chamonix Valley has a legendary reputation
all over the world, and every year almost
90,000 Japanese tourists come here.
"I was born in England, but my life only really
started in Chamonix. I came to live here to learn
how to climb. Contrary to what you might think,
it's a perfect place to start out because there are
routes at all levels. As a child I used to like looking
at lithographs and paintings of the Chamonix
area, and that's how I got to know the valley.
Today I combine my two passions,
painting/sculpture and climbing. It's a really
amazing place where you feel alive."
"In 2003 I fell in love with this valley,
its architecture and of course its setting.
Since then I have always come here for
the holidays, summer and winter. I stay with
a wonderful host family that I'm very close to.
Every winter I come and train in the valley in
the hope of being selected for the 2014 Winter
Olympics, which are taking place in Sochi,
my home town in Russia."
"Fitting in here is easy if you make a bit of an
effort to learn the language. Chamonix is not a
seasonal resort but a real international town, and
that changes everything!"
Hidemi Yokoyama tells his story: "Passionate
about the mountains and skiing, I arrived in
Chamonix in the 1970s once the valley had
become fashionable. I have never regretted my
decision. Every landscape here is stunning. Here,
the people are friendly and the atmosphere is
very sociable. It's a very cosmopolitan and
atypical place, and that's what gives it its charm."

A piece of advice to skiers: the 'Verte des Houches'
is not a green run but one of the fastest downhill courses
in the World Cup and the home of the legendary Kandahar.
It's two minutes of breathtaking action for the spectators
massed along the course, but above all for the racers.
One of them in 2011, the ski racer Guillermo Fayed
from Chamonix, shares his thoughts with us.
"For me, racing here was an intense experience.
WINNERS OF
THE KANDAHAR
At the start you look out over the Chamonix-Mont Blanc
Valley and the town where I was born, but I felt that
the whole valley was behind me too, shouting its
encouragement. You hear the noise of the crowd right up
until the moment you start. Then you're off and you can
no longer hear anything. It all passes very quickly.
The Alpine Ski World Cup Arlberg Kandahar
was first held in Chamonix in 1948.
The big names in alpine skiing that have won
fame on this legendary course: Didier Cuche,
Bode Miller, Kjetil Aamodt, Hermann Maier,
Giorgio Rocca, Guy Périllat, etc.
Because even though the organisers try to slow down races
these days by setting up winding courses, you reach speeds
of over 140 km/h. At the finish line you once again hear
the noise of the crowd. I come across friends, my former
coaches, the people who trained me and it's thanks
to them that I'm here. It's a unique feeling!"
The Kandahar is truly amazing.
