W hen I w a s h ired as e d ito r o f S uper7 m agazine th re e m o n th s ago, I
th o u g h t I had a fe w th in g s fig u re d o u t a b o u t m aking m agazines. A fte r all,
before I landed here, I'd been w ritin g and e d itin g p ro fe ss io n a lly in fastpaced p u b lish in g e n viro n m e n ts fo r o ve r fiv e years. M y last jo b w as on
N e w typ e USA m agazine, a 200 page m o n th ly a n im e m ag w ith a hefty
circu la tio n and ulcer-causing dea dlin es th a t'd m ake a d a ily new spaper
e d ito r's head e xplode. Little did I kn o w th a t w ith Super7,1 w as in fo r an allne w a d ve ntu re in p u b lish in g , n o t to m e n tio n a n e w fo u n d obsession w ith
Japanese and d e sig n er toys.
But d o n 't get m e w ro n g , it's n o t th e stress o f th e jo b that's su rp risin g . It's
a ctu a lly th e am azing people w h o m ake up th e to y scene th a t have in­
sp ired and shocked me, sta rtin g rig h t here w ith th e creators o f S u p e r!

ce rta in p o in t a c o u p le o f ye a rs ago, it o n ly
seem ed n a tu ra l to c o m b in e m u tu a l in te r­
ests, ta le n ts and ro b o t c o lle c tio n s to b rin g
th e best d a m n ro b o t b o o k to m arket. I was
sp e a kin g to M a rk N agata, a nd I expressed
in te re s t in d o in g a co ffe e ta b le b o o k on
Japanese to y s . M a rk gave m e a lead on a
p u b lish e r, C h ro n icle Books, w h o had recent­
ly published J im b o M atison's So Crazy Japa­
nese Toys. I gave C hronicle a call, sent th e m
so m e o f m y p h o to g ra p h y, and after a fe w
w eeks o f d iscu ssio n s, M a tt A lt and I started
s tru c tu rin g th e p ro je ct. It w a s th e n w e re ­
alized w e needed s o m e se rio u s to y m uscle
so w e p ulled in Robert Duban fo r research,
e d itin g and to h e lp m a n a g e th e logistics o f
ge tting th e book o ff the g round.
2. H o w long have you been p h o to graph in g
Japanese toys?
I sta rte d s e rio u s ly fo c u s in g on p h o to g ra ­
p h y in m id 2002. Japanese to y s have been
p re v a le n t in m y w o rk fro m th e b e g in n in g .
3. W h a t is it about Japanese toys th a t

The slithery skinned invader from the remote w orld
of Visceros. He came w ith a hydro-pipe and backpack
that connected, (same as the Rescue Command from
Microman), only the kids in the U.S. (like me) liked to
trash theirtoys, so the pipe is nearly impossible to find.
Brains: Opaque orange, and trans light green.
The clawed carrier o f destruction from the forbidden
w orld of Udanax. This is m y favorite, and I w ould
say the pinnacle o f vintage plastic. Everything is rad
about this mantis like alien. He came w ith a set of
translucent wings, a g low in the dark brain w ith horn­
like antennae, a m ilky moss color, and is the w inner
o f coolest m icro feet ever. Check out those paws.

is obviously lobster based.That's a given. But check

R obots and ray g u n s began e c lip sin g sales o f
c o w b o y hats and s ix s h o o te rs, and A m e rica n
c h ild re n — th e Japanese c o m p a n ie s ' largest
m arke t— c o u ld n 't g e t e n o u g h fu tu ris tic toys.
In th e e a rly days, n one o f th e ro b o ts had any

Pieces like L illip u t (KT, 1938), A to m ic R obot
M an (U n k n o w n , 1949), and R-35 (Linem ar,

ROBOT DETECTIVE KEIJI-K was created by S hotaro Ishinom ori,
m a ste rm in d o f such iconic super heroes as Kamen Rider,
Kikaida, and Inazum an. The live-action sh o w firs t aired on
Japanese TV in A p ril 1973 and ran th ro u g h Septem ber w ith a
to ta l o f tw e n ty -s ix episodes.
W h ile th e p lo t o f Keiji-K is ra th e r sim p le , th e u n d e rly in g issues
