There’s nothing quite like the rich, warm, luxurious look of
wood blinds. But many homeowners are uncomfortable
selecting wood blinds for rooms where the temperature or
humidity may be high or where blinds are exposed to the
ultraviolet rays of direct sunlight. So Hunter Douglas developed Everwood and Woodmates. These blinds will not fade,
warp or crack. Which means they’re not only beautiful enough
for the library, they’re practical enough for the kitchen. There
are simply no boundaries on the design options of these
beautiful blinds.
PRODUCT
SUMMARY
Hunter Douglas Alternative Wood
Blinds offer customers the best of
two worlds: The look and warmth
of real wood blinds…and the
durability of a blind that will
not fade, warp or crack even in
hot, humid conditions. While
Everwood and Woodmates offer
similar benefits, their features are
different, resulting in two different
price points. This Guide will help
you understand the difference
and enable you to recommend
the Alternative Wood Blind that’s
appropriate for each of your
customers.
Everwood…
Ever Lasting. Ever
Beautiful. Everwood Blinds.
A unique blend of North American
Hardwood and advanced composite materials captures 100% of the
warmth and luxurious look of
wood. These no-fade, no-warp,
no-crack blinds also feature a
deluxe 3" valance for a beautifully
finished look and an angled
bottom rail that ensures tighter
closure. Everwood blinds offer the
ultimate in design features.
Woodmates…
Practical. Elegant.
Affordable.
The value leader in Alternative
Wood Blinds. Woodmates combines the look of real wood with
the practicality of a blind that will
not fade, warp or crack. A 21⁄2"
valance and rectangular-shaped
bottom rail are standard. For
good looks and basic features,
Woodmates blinds simply can’t
be beat.
Special Features
HeadmasterTM hardware system
assures smooth operation
Everwood and Woodmates both
feature the Headmaster hardware
system. This advanced componen-

try ensures smoother operation
and long-life performance. The
Headmaster hardware system sets
a new standard for durability,
performance, ease of installation
and customer satisfaction.
Wider tape spacing enhances
the beauty
Both Everwood and Woodmates
are designed to feature considerably wider tape spacing than
competitors’ brands. As the chart
shows, wider tape spacing means
fewer ladder tapes are required to
support the blind. The fewer the
ladder tapes, the more attractive
the blind and the more unobstructed the view.

Quality construction assures
consistency
True to Hunter Douglas commitment to quality, the Everwood
and Woodmates manufacturing
process ensures there are no dyelot variations or blemishes. This in
turn ensures customer satisfaction
and eliminates complaints about
variations in slats.

BLINDS
Inside or Outside Mount
How you take your measurements will vary depending upon
whether the blind fits within the
window opening (inside mount
or IB) or overlaps the window
opening (outside mount or OB).
“Rounding” Your
Measurements
Measuring for
Outside Mounts
Ordered dimensions should be
accurate to within 1/8". With inside
mounts, always round down to
the nearest 1/8". Rounding up
could result in a blind that is too
wide or too long to fit within the
window opening. For example,
3
⁄16" rounds down to 1/8".
Measure the desired width and
height. To minimize light leakage,
it’s recommended that the blind
overlap the window opening at
least 11/2" on each side and at the
top and bottom (if possible).
Outside Mount
Measuring for
Inside Mounts
Measure the width inside the window opening at the top, middle
and bottom. Measure the height
inside the window opening at the
left, right and center. Order the
narrowest width measurement
and the shortest height measurement. Remember to always round
your measurements down to the
nearest 1/8".
Be sure the window opening is
deep enough to install the mounting bracket. Refer to the Product
Specifications on page AW-8 for
mounting depth requirements.
Inside Mount
Inside
Mount
(IB)
When measuring the height, take
into account the requirements for
the mounting bracket attachment.
A flat vertical surface at least 13/4"
high is needed.
C U T- O U T S
A cut-out is a blind which has
had a small rectangular area
removed from it to avoid obstructions, usually from one of the
corners or from the bottom. Available cut-outs are pictured on
page AW-9.

Measure a cut-out like a standard
rectangular blind, but also provide
detailed measurements of the area
to be removed. In addition, mark
your measurements on a sketch of
the cut-out to ensure accurate
communication of the order.

MEASURING GUIDELINES
Accurate measurements are absolutely essential. The measurements you provide are used first
to price the blind, and then to
custom fabricate it to the specified
size. The dimensions supplied
with the order form must be
correct for the blind to properly
fit the window opening. For
maximum accuracy, always use a
steel tape measure. As a dealer, it
is your responsibility to provide
correct measurements. Your
fabricator is not accountable for
incorrect measurements.

Materials and Tools
Each blind ordered will include
two hinged-cover installation
brackets (a left- and a right-hand)
and the appropriate number of
intermediate support brackets for
the headrail width. One support
bracket is required for widths
from 48" to 60", and two support
brackets for widths over 60".
Optional extension brackets are
available for additional clearance.
The sheet metal screws supplied
with the brackets will be the only
fasteners needed in most cases.
Wall anchors or expansion bolts
(not included) are recommended
for non-solid surfaces, such as
drywall or plaster. Concrete, brick
or tile surfaces require carbide
drill bits and the appropriate plugs,
anchors or screws.
Just a few basic tools are recommended: steel tape measure, carpenter’s level, power drill and bits,
and a flat-blade and/or Phillips
screwdriver.
Mounting the
Installation Brackets
Level mounting is critical to the
operation of the blind. A carpenter’s level should be used to check
that the mounting surface is level
on an inside mount (use shims
to level the brackets, if necessary).
On an outside mount, the tops of
the installation brackets must be
level and aligned at the same
height.
Bracket Spacing
Bracket spacing is the same for
both inside-mounted and outsidemounted applications. The two
hinged-cover brackets should be
positioned 1⁄4" beyond the ends of
the headrail. Blinds over 48" wide
must have a support bracket
spaced evenly between the end
brackets. Blinds over 60" wide
must have two support brackets
spaced no more than 48" apart.
W O O D
B L I N D S
I N S TA L L AT I O N
All bracket locations should
be measured, marked, and the
mounting holes drilled.
Inside Mount Applications
Installation brackets for inside
mounts are attached inside the
window frame, or to the
ceiling. Shim the
mounting
surface if
necessary
to ensure
that the
L.H.
headrail is
mounted
level.
Minimum mounting requirements
can be found on page AW-8.
The front edges of the brackets
must be aligned. Support brackets,
if required, should be positioned
so that they are aligned with the
end brackets.
Two screws are used to attach
each bracket. Whenever possible
with end brackets, one screw
should be located on the side
and one located at the top, as
shown in the above illustration.
The hinged-cover installation
brackets open by pressing the
bottom side up, and pulling the
locking safety cover open.
Outside Mount Applications
Installation brackets for outside
mounts are attached to the window frame or wall, or to a door.
A flat vertical surface at least 13⁄4"
high is required for attachment.
Space Evenly

The installation brackets must
be level and aligned at the same
height to ensure level mounting
of the headrail. Support brackets,
if required, should be positioned
so that they are aligned at the
same height as the end brackets.
Two screws are used to attach
each bracket. Locate the screws
diagonally, as pictured above.
End Mount Applications
Blinds can span open areas, such
as arched window openings, by
either inside or outside mounting
the end brackets. Because support
brackets cannot be used, the
blinds can be no wider than 48".
Optional Extension Brackets
Extension brackets can be used
with outside mounts to project
the installation brackets from the
mounting surface. Their purpose
is to allow the blind to clear
obstructions, such as window
cranks. Extension brackets are
secured to the mounting surface
with two diagonally located
screws. The installation brackets
are then attached to the extension
brackets.

To prevent flexing, extension
brackets should be mounted so
that the sides of the installation
brackets can be attached, as
shown in the illustrations above.
Position the extension brackets
so that all installation and support
brackets, 1) will be aligned and
positioned at the same height; and
2) will project the same distance
from the mounting surface.
Connect the mounting brackets
to the extension brackets using
two screws, diagonally positioned
whenever possible.
Valance Attachment
The valance is attached to the
headrail using valance clips. Install
one clip on each end, and space
any others evenly in-between, no
more than 48" apart.
If the valance is outside mounted,
attach the valance returns using
the corner keys provided. Slots in
the valance and returns help you
to easily position the corner keys.
Important: Install the valance
clips and attach the returns before
mounting the headrail.
After mounting the headrail, attach
the valance. Snap the valance
extrusion into the clips (Everwood)
or snap the valance directly into
the clips (Woodmates).
Installing the Blind
If no support brackets are used,
simply slip the headrail into
the end brackets
and snap the
locking
covers
shut. The
headrail is
L.H.
held securely
in place by
the locking,
safety-hinged
cover of the
end installation brackets.
L.H.
If the blind
is loose in
the end
brackets,
open the hinged cover and expand
the tabs on the headrail end locks
using a screwdriver. If the blind is
too tight, compress one or both of
the tabs.
Support Bracket
Headrail
If support bracket(s) are used,
tip the headrail into the support
bracket(s) while placing rail into
the end brackets, as shown in the
illustration below (left).
Wand Attachment
(Wand Tilt Control Only)
The tilt mechanism inside the
headrail has a metal shaft protruding from it that extends
beneath the rail. The wand must
be connected to this shaft.
The plastic sleeve pulls apart from
the top of the wand to expose a
metal hook. The hook fits through
the hole in the metal shaft.
Slide the plastic sleeve over the
metal shaft and insert the wand
hook through the hole. Then slide
the plastic sleeve back down over
the hook until it is firmly seated.
Open and close the slats to test
the wand tilter. Six revolutions of
the wand should tilt the slats from
fully open to fully closed.

CARE AND
MAINTENANCE
Dusting
Alternative Wood Blinds should
be dusted regularly to keep them
looking new. Use a soft, clean
cloth, chemically-treated dust
cloth, or dusting mitt. Lower the
blind to its full length, tilt the
slats almost all the way down and
dust. Then tilt the slats almost all
the way up and dust. (Not fully
closing the slats in either position
allows dusting where the slats
overlap.)
