This time last year Indiana horseman Verlin Yoder had no
thoughts whatsoever of racing his champion Indiana trotter
anywhere but at Hoosier Park in Indiana. Then Meadowlands
race secretary Peter Koch phoned him to invite him to the Vincennes Invitational on Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands.

Wind Of The North
To prepare for the first big
race on the schedule, Yoder entered Natural Herbie in an
Open Trot at the Meadowlands on Friday night. “Herbie”
goes into the race off of a second-place finish in the Invitational at Hoosier Park. He’s got 10 starts thus far, finishing
on the board in seven of them.
“He’s been struggling with the track at Hoosier Park; the
footing hasn’t been what he likes, so based on that I really
want to get a start into him at the Meadowlands, in case I
need to make some changes,” said Yoder of their Friday
night appearance at the Meadowlands.
While a look at his lines might make it appear that Natural
Herbie is behind his peers in terms of speed thus far this
year, Yoder said his horse is performing at about the same
level he did at this time last year.
“I have always turned him out the same length of time,
from age two to three, from three to four, and now from
four to five, and he’s come back the same each time,” he ex-

N32 Jersey’s Best Line Up In Classic
With the 2015 editions of the North America Cup, Max
Hempt Memorial and Meadowlands Pace now in the
books, the two winners of the races—Wiggle It Jiggleit
and Wakizashi Hanover—have stepped to the front of the
3-year-old class.
They have also taken a break. Wiggle It Jiggleit most likely
won’t race until Aug. 8 at the Meadowlands, when he could
be supplemented to the Cane Pace. Wakizashi Hanover will
enjoy some time off until Aug. 22, when he has the Battle of
the Brandywine at the Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono.
Meanwhile, Artspeak, the 2014 Dan Patch 2-Year-Old Pacer
of the Year, will be trying to redeem himself Saturday in the
$200,000 Anthony Abbatiello SBOA New Jersey Classic at
the Meadowlands. Despite pacing home his final quarter in
:26 in the Meadowlands Pace final, he finished sixth.
The Classic field also includes the six-time winner Split
The House, who is still trying to step up his game against
the best in his division. Unraced as a 2 year old because of
an injury, Split The House finished fourth in an elimination
for the North America Cup and failed to advance to the
final and then finished fourth in the NA Cup consolation.
He followed up with two wins against lesser competition in
the Summertime Series at Mohawk, his last starts before
Saturday’s Classic.
James “Friday” Dean, who trains Split The House,
shipped the colt by Rocknroll Hanover to New Jersey
early Wednesday.
“He got two nice starts after the NA Cup, so we’ll see
how he does,” said the soft spoken Dean. “He has raced
first-up a lot, and with only seven in the Jersey Classic,
we shouldn’t have any problems even though we got the
seven hole.”
Because of the Adios eliminations at The Meadows Saturday, Dean was looking for a driver at the Meadowlands.
Dean has now enlisted Randy Waples, the regular driver for
Split The House, to make the trip to the Big M.
“Scott (Horner, who co-owns Split The House with Dean
and Peter Milligan) said since Ronnie Waples qualified him
in Florida this year before the season started, to give him a
call too, but he said you’d better get somebody down there,”
added Dean. “Then it became obvious none of the Meadowlands regulars were available.”
Dean said he’s only made two changes on Split The House
since the colt started racing this spring.
“We changed his shoeing up front to flip flops and I put
a fly screen on him,” revealed Dean. “That’s all we’ve
changed.”
Split The House has more U.S. stakes on his schedule,
starting with the Battle of the Brandywine. He has the Simcoe at Mohawk, then the Little Brown Jug on Sept. 24 and
the Bluegrass on Oct. 3, with his final big event of the season the Breeders Crown at Woodbine.—By Kathy Parker

Ideal Nuggets Starting
To Shine In 2015
With JK She’salady and Sassa Hanover, the fastest and
richest 2-year-old filly pacers last year, not returning to form
early in 2015, divisional honors appear to be up for grabs.
That’s the case even more so with the handful of stakes
thus far resulting in different winners.
One filly trying to make a case for divisional honors is
Ideal Nuggets, who comes into Saturday night’s $100,000
Thomas D’Altrui-SBOA Miss New Jersey at the Meadowlands with three wins in five starts this year. Trained by Ed
Lohmeyer, Ideal Nuggets heads into the race off back-toback 1:51.2 victories, including the James Lynch Memorial
consolation on July 4 at The
Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono.
Ideal Nugget’s showing this
year is a far cry from 2014, when
she won just once in 15 starts,
that being a career-best 1:50.4
effort in a Bluegrass division at
The Red Mile. Although she had
just that lone win, combined
with four seconds and six thirds
she was able to amass earnings
“The biggest thing of $187,917 (11th overall for
freshman filly pacers) for ownthat helped her
was that we went ers Bob and Lauren Tucker, who

mare Rough Sketch.
–Ed Lohmeyer
Although Ideal Nuggets apon Ideal Nuggets
pears in top form heading into
the Miss New Jersey, Lohmeyer said things were far different at the start of the year as the filly turned in a pair of lackluster qualifiers at the Meadowlands. After a fifth in a New
Jersey Sires Stakes split on May 23 in her pari-mutuel
debut, Ideal Nuggets faded to seventh in a Big M qualifier
after leading early.
“She didn’t come back her first starts in qualifiers; she had
no pace at all,” said Lohmeyer. “She was a little bit off here
and there.”
Lohmeyer said he was able to make some changes to help
the filly.
“She was off on a knee a little bit and we worked on that.
And her attitude wasn’t good and she was in heat all the
time,” explained Lohmeyer. “But the biggest thing that
helped her was that we went from a closed to an open bridle. She couldn’t see anything so she wasn’t interested, but
once we opened her up she got a little bit more interested
in everything.”
The changes paid immediate dividends as Ideal Nuggets
came back on June 16 at Pocono Downs to win an
overnight in 1:52.3. Needing to then finish in the top three
in her Lynch elim to advance to the final, Ideal Nuggets
Ideal Nuggets
missed by less than a length while finishing fourth. She
took full advantage of landing in the Lynch consolation as
she rallied from fifth at the half to score by 1 ½ lengths with
George Napitano Jr. driving.
Lohmeyer has enlisted Mike Simons to drive Ideal Nuggets
in the Miss New Jersey as he hopes to be presented the trophy by the newly-crowned Miss New Jersey Lindsey Giannini. He admits the task will be tough as Ideal Nuggets will
start from post 9 in the 10-horse field.
“We’ve finally got her right and she’s pretty sharp. She’s
back in form,” said Lohmeyer, “but she drew the outside
and that’s not going to help her.”—By Gordon Waterstone

Sorella: “I’m Wiping The Slate Clean”
When Vegas Vacation won the 2013 Little Brown Jug, coowner Adriano Sorella was on top of the world, jubilant
enough that he told trainer Casie Coleman’s entire barn staff
he was taking them on a Las Vegas vacation.
Now, just two years later, the Ontario-based Sorella has
become so disillusioned he plans on selling all 16 horses he
owns at the Aug. 2 Tattersalls Mixed Sale at the Meadowlands, and will give himself
time to contemplate if and
when he wants to step back
into the sport he came to love
so quickly.
Sorella, president and CEO
of the internet/software company Union Ad Sales, said
hearing and reading things
about his decision on social
media had become “a little bit
comical.” Thus, he wanted to
clear the air.
“A lot of people are jumping
to conclusions and I don’t
even want to reply back to
some of those people,” Sorella
told HarnessRacing Weekend
Preview Wednesday (July 22).
“There’s no doubt
“They say I should take things
that I will still be
in moderation. I have 16
in horse racing,
but it’s a matter of horses, they’re all in the hole
for $100,000 each. So I should
how and to what
cut it down to eight horses
extent.”
–Adriano Sorella that are all in the hole for
$100,000 each? So instead of
losing more than a million, I should just lose half a million? How about restructuring to the point where you’re
not getting killed?”
Sorella said about three months ago he approached Coleman, who trains all of his horses, about claiming a few
horses in an attempt to start a cash flow. Coleman, who
moved away from claiming horses a few years ago, declined and that led to a philosophical disagreement.
“I was trying to make my stable bigger because I
needed to figure out a way to make the wheels work,”
said Sorella, who purchased his first horse in 2011 after
participating in a new owner’s program conducted by
the Standardbred Breeders of Ontario Association. “I
was willing to roll the dice, knowing that if it didn’t work
out and the claimers weren’t making money, that I’d be
losing more money. But it was a risk I was willing to
take.”
Sorella said following conversations with Coleman, he decided to sell all of his horses. That included Vegas Vacation,
who missed all of 2014 due to injury and after returning to
the races this year is again sitting on the sidelines due to injury. But after contemplating how it would appear selling
the Little Brown Jug champ—who he owns in partnership
with Coleman and Ross Warinners’ West Wins Stable, Phyllis Saunders and Coleman assistant trainer Anthony
Beaton—he changed his mind.
“Originally, when this first happened and I was very upset,
I said send every single one of them to the sale,” he said. “I
knew that I was going to get plastered (by people) in sending the Little Brown Jug winner to the sale.”
Sorella said his decision has not come lightly.
“I got into it as a fan, I stayed in it because of passion,
and I’m getting out of it because of business,” said
Sorella. “I stayed in because I just love it. Yeah, I had a
great run and that’s cool, There’s no doubt that I will still
be in horse racing, but it’s a matter of how and to what
extent. But this just needed to happen. I’m wiping the
slate clean and starting all over again.” —By Gordon Waterstone

Trainer Jimmy Takter told HarnessRacing Weekend Preview earlier this week he has five guaranteed starters for
the Aug. 8 Hambletonian at the Meadowlands, and three
of them are in action in Sunday afternoon’s $370,000 Dr.
Harry M. Zweig Memorial at Vernon Downs. There is also
a Zweig consolation on the 12-race card as well as the
$185,000 Zweig Filly Trot which includes world champion
Mission Brief.
Takter’s Zweig quartet include Hambo hopefuls Pinkman,
Canepa Hanover and Uncle Lasse, joined by Hambo-eligible
Whom Shall I Fear. Only The Bank, who became the division’s fastest this year with a 1:50.4 victory in a Stanley
Dancer Memorial division last Saturday night at the Meadowlands, and French Laundry, who was third in the Dancer
to his stablemate, sit this one out from the Takter barn.
Pinkman, who won the second Dancer division in 1:52.2 to
propel himself past the $1-million mark in career earnings,
is just a half-length shy of being perfect in six starts this
year. His other four wins include a world-record 1:51.3f
clocking in the $500,000 Earl Beal Jr. Memorial on July 4 at
Pocono Downs.
Regular driver Yannick Gingras will be in the sulky behind
Pinkman, starting from post 7.
Canepa Hanover finished third to stablemate Pinkman in
the Dancer in what was his first start after a month layoff
following a disappointing last-place finish in the Goodtimes final at Mohawk, after making a break as the oddson favorite. Takter will direct Canepa Hanover himself
from post 5.
Uncle Lasse, who will be driven by Brett Miller from post
4, has won four of five starts this year. His lone loss came in
the Beal when he finished second by a head to Pinkman.
Rounding out the foursome which are coupled in the wagering is Whom Shall I Fear, who won his first four starts of
the year but hasn’t found the winner’s circle in five starts
dating back to May 14. Whom Shall I Fear comes into the
race off a sixth-place finish behind The Bank in the Dancer.
Mission Brief, whose back issues have limited her sophomore season to just three starts, will attempt to build on her
second-place finish in the $187,000 Delvin Miller Memorial
last Saturday in the Filly Trot. Trainer Ron Burke told Weekend Preview prior to the Miller that Mission Brief’s possible

Hambletonian entry against the boys would hinge on that
race and the Zweig. Mission Brief, whose other two wins include the New Jersey Sires Stakes final, will start from post

Badiou Hanover Hopes For
Better Luck In Adios
When it came to the draw for last week’s Crawford Farms
Meadowlands Pace, Badiou Hanover was more like “Badluck” Hanover, getting stuck with the most outside starting
spot—post 10.
At least as the gelding prepares for Saturday’s eliminations for the $525,000 Delvin Miller Adios Pace at The Meadows, he is off to a better start. Badiou Hanover will start his
elimination, the second of three divisions, from post 2 with
driver Andy Miller. He is 8-1 on the morning line.
Badiou Hanover has won five of 10 races this season
and earned $84,705. He should feel at home at The
Meadows, having posted a win there in June in the
Pennsylvania Stallion Series. In addition, four of his five
victories this year have come on
five-eighth-mile tracks, such as
The Meadows.
Meadowlands Pace runner-up
Dude’s The Man is the 2-1 morning
line favorite in Badiou Hanover’s
elimination, which also includes
Lost For Words, Tomy Terror, Rock

good draw, who is in the best form
and who gets the good trip. Those are the three things you
need to win the race.
“I’m going into it pretty good. I’ve got a pretty good driver,
a pretty good draw, and a fit horse. I’m ready to rock.”
Badiou Hanover had won four of five races, including
the Hempt Memorial consolation, prior to finishing
fourth in his Meadowlands Pace elimination and then
10th in the final. Miller, who was making her first appearance in a Meadowlands Pace final, was philosophical about the outcome.
“For my Meadowlands Pace debut, that wasn’t much of a
showing,” she said with a laugh. “But he was behind the
eight-ball already with the 10 hole. Everything had to go
wrong for them and everything had to go right for us.”
Badiou Hanover is a son of Well Said out of the mare
Blind Ambition. He was purchased for $105,000 at the
2013 Standardbred Horse Sale and his family includes
stakes-winners Cheyenne Rei, Ain’t No Stopn Him, Lon
Todd Hanover, and Salute Hanover, as well as Artstopper,
the dam of Yagonnakissmeornot and Always B Miki. He is
owned by Pinkse Stables and Joe P Racing, which this
www.harnessracing.com
week purchased the ownership share previously held by
Jim Simpson.
For his career, Badiou Hanover has won seven of 17 races
and earned $127,360.
“He’s just a nice horse,” said Miller. “As of right now
he’s no Wiggle It Jiggleit or Wakizashi (Hanover) but he’s
getting money and we’re paying our bills and the owners are happy. I think he’s got a career ahead of him.
He’s a sound horse. I could see him being a nice aged
horse.” (HRC)
Dancin Yankee Favored In Gerrity Memorial
Saratoga Casino and Raceway is set to welcome some of
the country’s finest horses for the seventh annual Joe Gerrity Jr. Memorial Pace on Saturday night.
This year’s Gerrity features a high quality field of eight
elite horses competing for $260,000. Notable entries in this
year’s pace include last year’s champion Dancin Yankee,
who has amassed over $1.2 million in lifetime earnings. The
$260,000 Memorial Pace is set for the 7th race on the
evening’s card.
With trainer Chris Oakes serving a suspension, conditioner
Mickey Peterson sends out Scott Rocks and Luck Be Withyou.
New York Racing Association announcing legend Tom
Durkin will be on hand to sign autographs and meet with
guests by the winner’s circle from 7-9 p.m. An autographed
commemorative photo of Durkin will be given away to the
first 500 race fans.
The Memorial was created in 2009 as a pacing series
honoring the memory of Gerrity, who died in October
2005. A highly respected leader, inspiration and an icon
for Saratoga Raceway and the horse racing industry, he
was a breeder of horses in Loudonville, a licensed harness driver and became chairman of the board of
Saratoga Harness Racing Inc. (now Saratoga Casino and
Raceway) on April 1, 1987. Gerrity later oversaw the expansion of the facility and the installation of video gaming machines, funding the project in part himself. He also
served as a director for the Harness Horse Breeders of

year olds at the Meadowlands, with the $320,000 yearling
THE PERFECT LINDY among the entries (Race 4). Races 5
and 6 at the Meadowlands will give folks a glimpse of John
Cashman Memorial Trot eligible MR. PICOLIT S (Race 5) and
APPOMATTOX, NATURAL HERBIE, MARKET SHARE, MASTER OF LAW and OBRIGADO (Race 6).
Hambletonian eligibles will compete in Race 8 and Race 10
at the Meadowlands. Race 8 includes MUSICAL RHYTHM,
SOUTHWIND STRYKER, CODE BON and MYTHOLOGY
BLUE CHIP, who was recently sold to Tommy Jacobson of
Sweden and moved from the Tyler Raymer Stable to trainer
Nancy Johansson. Jacobson raced the world champion
mare Giant Diablo. In Race 10, the Hambo eligibles are
TRUE BLUE STRIDE, PIERRE, LIBERTARIAN, GIFTED WAY,
FASHION TRIBUTE and MASSIVE LIGHTNING.
Fans of European bloodstock can catch a daughter of Prix
d’Amerique winner Maharajah in Race 9, a Kindergarten for
2-year-old filly trotters. The filly named UNAU S is out of the
Malabar Man filly Ivy Swinger. She is a homebred for Margareta Wallenius-Kleberg’s Menhammar Stuteri.
While Natural Herbie will be racing at the Meadowlands, his
home track of Hoosier Park will be showcasing Indiana-sired
2-year-old pacing fillies and 3-year-old trotting fillies—in
$75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes finals. The event for the pacing
fillies features the three-for-three GINGER SHARK (Race 11).
Ohio Sires Stakes for 2-year-old colts, pacers and trotters,
are on the schedule at Northfield Park on Friday night, with
one of the divisions for pacers (Race 13) featuring the
fastest offspring from the first crop of Big Bad John, BIG
BAD CAM p,2, 1:53.2f.
Not unexpectedly, the qualifying card at the Meadowlands
Saturday morning will feature horses eligible to the Cashman Memorial. In Race 12, this year’s Elitlopp champion,
MAGIC TONIGHT, returns to American soil with an eye on the
Cashman. Magic Tonight was a Pennsylvania Sires Stakes
champion as a 3 year old before he was sold to Lennart
Agren and exported to Sweden. He’s trained by Roger Walmann, who knows how to win a big race in North America,
getting the job done with the mares Giant Diablo and Tamla

Celeber. Also qualifying in the same race with Magic Tonight
are WIND OF THE NORTH and LINDY’S TRU GRIT.
In addition to the big card at The Meadows Saturday night
with three Adios eliminations and future Adios stars competing in Pennsylvania Sires Stakes for 2-year-old cold pacers pacers, Saratoga is featuring 3-year-old pacing colts in
New York Sires on the Gerrity Memorial card. BETTING EXCHANGE, the third-place finisher in the North America Cup,
starts in Race 4 (8:05 p.m. post time).
The Saturday night card at Scioto Downs provides a great review of offspring by new sires in Ohio in six divisions of Sires
Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. The four divisions for filly pacers
include 19 representatives of the first crop by Big Bad John.
At Mohawk on Saturday night, GO DADDY GO returns to the
track after sub-par performances last month. He’ll start from
post 5 in the $105,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold split (Race 8).
On Sunday at Vernon Downs, in addition to the top trotters
PINKMAN and MISSION BRIEF competing in the Zweig divisions for colts and fillies, respectively, the Zweig consolation (Race 3) includes six Hambletonian eligibles, among
them MUSCLE DIAMOND, the runner-up to Pinkman in last
fall’s Breeders Crown.
Also on Sunday, at Harrah’s Philadelphia, MCWICKED, the
Dan Patch 3-Year-Old Pacing Colt of the 2014 season, is
scheduled to make his first start of the year in Race 5 (post
time 2 p.m.) against a field that includes ALLSTAR LEGEND,
GREAT VINTAGE and BANDOLITO.
At Tioga Sunday afternoon, New York Sires Stakes star
BARN DOLL, who has six wins in seven starts this year and
a new lifetime mark of 1:52.1, takes on a field of older
horses in the Open Trot (Race 7, post time 3:30 p.m.) for coowner/trainer Steve Pratt.
Moving on to Monday, July 27, north of the border, Grand
River Raceway will hold eliminations for its big races for 2year-old pacers, the BATTLE OF WATERLOO and BATTLE OF
THE BELLES. There are five eliminations. Trainer Bob McIntosh and John Campbell, who won the 2014 Battle of Waterloo edition with Go Daddy Go, will be teaming up again with
THINK ON IT. U.S.-based trainers Tony Alagna, Jimmy Takter
and Erv Miller are also sending starters for the events.

George and Joy Teague and son Montrell accept the Meadowlands Pace
trophy for Wiggle It Jiggleit’s win last Saturday, July 18.
Letter To The Editor
Dear Editor:
Let’s not miss an opportunity that we may never have again.
I hope that harness racing seizes a golden opportunity now
and enlists the services of Montrell Teague as a spokesman
and for promotional purposes. Montrell is young (24), smart,
articulate, and he just happens to be the driver of the best
horse in harness racing – Wiggle It Jiggleit.
Having Montrell do promotional TV spots or videos to be
shown at tracks across North America could help harness
tracks appeal to thousands of all ages, especially young
adults, a sorely-needed demographic in racing. All too often
the sparse crowds at harness tracks today looks like they’re
spending their Social Security checks.
I certainly hope we don’t miss the boat this time. Harness
racing has missed the boat all too often – in fact, harness
racing has missed an entire fleet of boats. I’ve never known
a business to talk so much about and yet do so little about
its problems. No wonder we are in the shape we are in.
Montrell won’t be the magic bullet that restores crowds to
harness tracks, but he could be a step in the right direction.
Believe me, after a lifetime in the advertising and promotional
business, I know talent when I see it. This young man already
has hundreds of followers and gaining more each day.
Yes, Montrell may not always be driving the top-ranked
horse in harness racing, but he will be smart and articulate
and he won’t reach 30 for another six years. Furthermore,
Montrell and the Teague Stable’s success story embody one
of the most endearing and enduring parts of harness racing: family. The Teague family has been living and breathing
harness racing for decades and they’re proof that this is a
family sport that has broad appeal.
Harness racing organizations have staffs of people paid to
promote the sport and yet the sport has spiraled downward
faster and faster in the last decade. Let’s enlist the services
of Montrell as a spokesman and give him a chance to succeed where the old generation of harness racing has failed.

HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 12 of 15

Captain Primeau Makes
100th Big M Start Friday
Captain Primeau is looking to score once more at the
Meadowlands.
On Friday night, the 11-year-old gelding is expected to become only the third trotter in 24 years to start 100 races at
the Big M.
Captain Primeau, named after former Philadelphia Flyers
captain Keith Primeau, is entered in the fifth race on the
card and will leave from post 4 with driver Corey Callahan
at the lines for trainer Conny Svensson.
Captain Primeau has won 13 of 99 lifetime starts at the
Meadowlands. The only trotters since 1992 to start more
races at the North Jersey oval are Great Adventure, with
111, and Close Encounter, with 103. Great Adventure retired
in 2007; Close Encounter in 2010.
For his career, Captain Primeau has won 32 of 189 races
and earned $326,168 for Svensson and his wife Anneli. The
Svenssons also bred Captain Primeau, who is a son of
Enjoy Lavec out of the world champion mare Lizzie Lee
Brook and is a full brother to stakes winner Brind’amour.
Conny Svensson had dibs on naming the horse if it was a
boy and planned to call him simply Primeau. But the
Svenssons’ then 9-year-old daughter Sarah came up with
the addition to the name.
“He’s the only horse that all of us have seen born,” said
Conny, who is a longtime assistant and farrier to trainer
Jimmy Takter. “When he was born and stuck his head out,
Sarah saw the white star–it looked like a ‘C’ when he was
newborn–and said ‘That’s Captain Primeau.’ So that’s
what he became.”
Captain Primeau, who has had 30 different drivers throughout his career, has won four of 18 races this year and earned
$21,246. He was third in his most recent start, at Harrah’s
Philadelphia, but won twice in the GSY Amateur Series at
the Meadowlands prior to that race. His race Friday will be
sponsored by Razer horseshoes; Captain Primeau was one
of the first horses in North America to wear the shoes.
“As long as he wants to race and can compete, he’ll be
racing,” Conny said. “There’s nothing that tells me that he
wants to quit soon. There’s no sign of that. He just had backto-back wins at the Meadowlands, even though it was amateur races. He still wants to do it. He’s happy to go race.
“He’s one of the kindest horses you want to be around.
When they have fans come through the paddock, they always come to us. He loves the attention. He’s great like that.
He’s a very social horse.”
The key to Captain Primeau’s longevity is his routine.
“We let him do whatever he wants,” said Anneli, who
wrote a song titled Let’s Go Captain Primeau, which was
recorded by Lisa Bouchelle. “When we train him, we don’t
www.harnessracing.com
bring a whip or a stopwatch. He does whatever he wants to
do, all the time.
“When we come back from racing, you’ll think he’s tired,
but we turn him out and he gallops around the whole field
and rolls around and jumps and kicks.”
The Svenssons will keep Captain Primeau at their home
whenever he retires. Conny thinks the gelding will make a
nice riding horse. (HRC)
Takter: “Something Bothering”
Father Patrick
Trainer Jimmy Takter told harnessracing.com that after
back-to-back dull efforts he planned on having two-time divisional champion Father Patrick examined by veterinarians. In
a text on Thursday (July 23), Takter said there was no update.
“I don’t know, it has to be something, but I can’t find anything,” Takter said the day after Father Patrick finished last in
the six-horse $443,000 Hambletonian Maturity at the Meadowlands. “I have to take him to a university and find out
what’s going on because there is something bothering him
right now. He was super coming into his last two starts and
then he was just empty.”
Father Patrick won his season debut in 1:52.1 in the
$150,000 Maxie Lee Memorial on May 25 at Harrah’s
Philadelphia, besting a field of older trotters that included
the 2013 Horse of the Year Bee A Magician, who was two
lengths behind in second. Father Patrick then finished second by a neck to JL Cruze in two legs of the Graduate for 4year-old trotters at the Meadowlands.
In the $250,000 Graduate final on July 11, Father Patrick
finished sixth, six lengths behind JL Cruze. In the Hambletonian Maturity, driver Yannick Gingras tipped Father Patrick
from fourth early to take the lead, but he was quickly overtaken by JL Cruze, who went on to the 2:04.2 victory in the 1
1/8-mile race. Father Patrick was eased down the stretch,
eventually finishing 21 ¾ lengths behind the winner.
“I know the other horses are racing great, but to be honest
with you, he should not be getting beat by those horses,”
said Takter. “But it’s tough racing; it’s a tough game.”
Doctor Butch Starts From Post 6 In Gerrity
Doctor Butch is the type of horse that dislikes wearing a
blanket, even on the coldest days of winter. A blanket in the
winner’s circle, though, is another story.
“No problem with that,” Brad McNinch said with a laugh
after detailing how Doctor Butch destroyed two winter blankets this year. “He loves standing in the winner’s circle with
a blanket.”
McNinch assists wife Linda Toscano with her New Jerseybased training stable and spends a lot of time with Doctor
Butch. The 5-year-old pacer will have the chance to pick up a

blanket Saturday at Saratoga Casino and Raceway when he
faces seven rivals in the $260,000 Joe Gerrity Jr. Memorial.
Doctor Butch, who needs $41,963 to reach $1 million in career earnings, is the longest shot on the morning line at 121, but he will neither know nor care about the odds. He will
start from post 6 on the half-mile oval, with Patrick
Lachance driving.
“He feels good; he looks good,” McNinch said about Doctor Butch. “He looks like he can beat anybody and he thinks
he can beat anybody. He’s just that kind. He’s just a good
horse. It’s mostly attitude. He just wants to beat everybody.”
Dancin Yankee, the 2014 Gerrity winner, is the 5-2 morning
line favorite in Saturday’s race. He will start from post 2
with Jim Morrill Jr. driving for trainer Gary Green. Luck Be
Withyou, P H Supercam and All Bets Off are next on the
morning line, with odds of 3-1 to 9-2.
“I see Dancin Yankee going down the road, but I don’t
think he’ll be left alone; there’s enough speed,” Toscano said
about the race. “Fortunately for us,(Doctor Butch) can race
both ways. He’ll race just as well from the back as he will on
or close to the lead. Hopefully with a trip we’ll be OK.”
Doctor Butch, a son of Art Major out of the mare Classical
Yankee, is owned by Ken Jacobs and has won 25 of 87 career races, including the 2013 Art Rooney Pace and 2012
New York Sires Stakes championship for 2-year-old male
pacers. He was purchased as a yearling for $55,000 under
the name Recent Vintage and his family includes millionaire
Yankee Cruiser and stakes-winner JK Majorette.
He heads to the Gerrity off a third-place finish in the Open
Handicap on July 18 at the Meadowlands. Over his most recent 14 starts, Doctor Butch has six wins and a total of 10
on-the-board efforts. His finishes outside the top three came
in two starts from outside posts at Yonkers, a troubled trip
in the Gold Cup Invitational at Mohawk, and when he tied
up in the Jerry Taylor Invitational at Harrah’s Philadelphia.
“He’s probably a half-step below the top ones, but I wouldn’t have any problem putting him in with them,” McNinch
said. “He’s got a great attitude and he’s got lots of go. He’s
on his game right now. It’s just the routine he’s in now. He
loves it.”
Doctor Butch has raced throughout this year, making at
least two starts in every month of 2015, and won eight of 21
appearances. He has been a member of Toscano’s stable
from the start of his career.
“I love that as much as anything,” said Toscano, who also
credits caretaker Sanne Hansen for her work with Doctor
Butch during the past two years. “We put the first harness
on him and we broke him. Normally (Jacobs’) horses go
south and get broken in North Carolina. That year for some
reason the colts stayed north. I think that’s the best part, to
get to keep one you broke yourself and then watched them
turn into a good horse.
www.harnessracing.com
“He’s a pleasure to have. He’s a very sound horse, and a
very, very pretty horse. He’s been paying the way. I kind of
was instrumental in him not being sold (after his 3-year-old
season) because I really believe in the horse. A formula for
a really successful operation is having those winter racehorses that can help pay the bills. Ken loves the babies, but
he loves to watch the racing too. It’s been fun. Doctor Butch
has kind of ticked all the boxes.” (HRC)
Showplace Farms Closing As Training Center
After 36 years of being one of New Jersey’s premier Standardbred horse training facilities, Showplace Farms will
close its doors on Oct. 1.
Showplace, which can stable more than 425 Standardbred
racehorses, is located on 140 acres and is equipped with
state-of-the-art amenities.
“It has been a good run,” said Bix DiMeo, general manager, “but with fewer horses racing and the current economic climate here in New Jersey for harness racing, this
business model no longer works for us.” (Showplace Farms)
USTA Owners Seminar
At Sept. 12 Goshen Sale
The Goshen (N.Y.) Yearling Sale, in conjunction with the
U.S. Trotting Association (USTA), will conduct a free, introductory seminar for those considering first time horse ownership of a Standardbred on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The seminar, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will
cover the risks and rewards of horse ownership, the various
ways to get started owning a horse, costs, shopping strategies and how to perform due diligence. The educational
event will be held at the Mark Ford Training Center at 90
Slaughter Road, Middletown, N.Y.
While the seminar will cover all kinds of horse ownership,
including buying claimers and racehorses at public auction or
private sale, there will be “hands on” instruction in conformation and pedigree, using yearlings offered in the sale, which
will be held at noon the following day on Sunday, Sept. 13.
The USTA will provide a free subscription to Hoof Beats,
along with a credit for Pathway, the online Standardbred information system. Lunch and educational materials will also
be provided at no charge.

Springfield, DuQuoin Race Dates Finalized
Jim Hannon, general manager of both Illinois state fairs at
Springfield and DuQuoin, told harnessracing.com Thursday
afternoon that a race scheduled has been finalized and there
will be racing at both sites in 2015.
Continues on page 14 › › › ›
HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 14 of 15
July 24, 2015
“There is a lot of concern in Illinois because there has
been no funding for stakes payments by the department for
fiscal 2016, which started June 1,” said Hannon. “So a lot of
the stakes races in Illinois have been cut significantly. There
was talk and fear that there would be no racing at Springfield and DuQuoin, but we got the schedule yesterday with
the purses that are going to be allocated.”
Hannon said Springfield, which raced five days in 2014,
will race four days this year. Cards will be conducted Friday,
Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 15, and after a dark day on Sunday, will return on Monday, Aug. 17 and Tuesday, Aug. 18.
First-race post time for all cards is 12:00 p.m. (CDT).
DuQuoin, which raced three days in 2014, will race two
days, on Saturday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 30, also with
a noon post time.
“Because of the budget impasse in Springfield, the appropriation for purses for the states fairs has not been appropriated,” said Hannon. “However, with nomination fees, stakes
payments, entry fees and added money from the Department of Agriculture, purses will be in the $300,000 range.
“We worked hard to put a schedule together and have
pari-mutuel wagering at both fairs this year, and race for as
much as possible. There will still be Reviews and the Illinoisbred stakes races as well.”

Hazel Park Cancels Last
10 Thoroughbred Dates
Hazel Park Raceway, which had no Standardbred race
dates in 2015 but was granted 40 Thoroughbred dates, was
given approval Tuesday morning, July 21, by the Michigan
Gaming Control Board (MGCB) to cancel its final 10 dates
due to insufficient funds.
Richard Kalm, executive director of the MGCB, said in a
press release that it appears the situation came about as a
result of overspending, and that the MGCB “does not suspect malfeasance or misspending.”
“We were disappointed to learn there are insufficient
funds available to race beyond Aug. 8. This is an unfortunate and serious matter,” Kalm said.
Thoroughbred racing returned to Hazel Park last year following a 30-year absence in which the track held just harness racing. This year’s Thoroughbred meet began May 1
and had been scheduled to end Sept. 12. Instead, the meet
will now conclude on Aug. 8.
According to the MGCB, the Michigan Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, which represents the
Thoroughbred horsemen at Hazel Park, indicated it would
need approximately $51,000 per night for purses. The track
raced live Friday and Saturday nights. Instead, the MCGB
reported more money—sometimes about $75,000 per
night, was used for purses.
With the closure this year of Sports Creek Raceway near
Flint and Hazel Park, located in suburban Detroit, not conducting a harness meet this year, more than $1 million remains in
the Standardbred race fund. Kalm said the money would become available should the Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association sign a contract with Hazel Park in the future.
“The MGCB remains willing to work with (Hazel Park)
management if it can find a solution to its financial challenges,” Kalm said. “However, the MGCB must work within
the framework of state law. We encourage all of the parties
involved in the horse racing industry, including the tracks
and the horsemen’s associations, to cooperate to best meet
the challenges faced by the industry.”
