societies toured the AHS museum on Main Street, enjoyed a luncheon, and listened
to presentations. AHS Co-President Peg Theoret gave a brief talk about the dramatic
sinking of The Empress of Ireland, 100 years ago to the day. The Empress was a large ship
that went to the bottom of the Saint Lawrence River: less than 15 minutes after being

Fisk Farm
Summer is approaching and with it comes the
20th Season of Cultural Heritage Events at Fisk
Farm, sponsored by the Isle La Motte Preservation
Trust. The 2014 season will begin next weekend with
events on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday
afternoon, June 14, from 2 to 4 pm, Jack Harrington,
leader of the popular Potluck Folk Singers, will lead a
Folk Jam for folk musicians and folk music lovers. He
is calling for guitars, fiddles, mandolins, banjos, bass,
harmonicas, flutes, accordions, keyboards, bongos,
autoharps, singers and whatever to come and
participate in the tradition of shared “homemade”
accoustic (unplugged) music in a friendly, relaxed
atmosphere. The “open stage” setting will operate as
a song circle, with players taking turns while others
listen or play along or just sing and harmonize. Come
& bring your instrument and/or voice. Budding folk
musician or seasoned artist, solo, duo or group, all
welcome. Perform your favorites or your own songs.

Painting by Susan Larkin
On Sunday, June 15, from 5 to 7 pm there will be
an Art Opening for works by Isle La Motte artist, Susan
Larkin. Susan is a landscape painter who works in
oils and pastels. She states, “I love painting the daily
views that I encounter as I walk, drive and paddle
around my home on Isle La Motte. The landscape
here is illuminated by the reflection of the light on the
lake, giving the ordinary an extraordinary brilliance
of color. Susan has spent many days outside painting
plein air. Work of her “painting partner”, Maurie
Harrington, will also be on display at the opening.
Maurie, wife of Jack Harrington mentioned above,
is the Art Director at Fisk Farm and has scheduled
art exhibitions by artists throughout Vermont for
many years. Included with the work of these gifted
artists will be the extraordinary variety of art and
craft by Alburgh’s Ginger Johnson. A portion of all
sales at Fisk Farm are contributed to the Isle La Motte
Preservation Trust. Fisk Farm is located at 3849 West

Planning a
Variety Show
If you signed up to be part of the Village
Players variety show in July: you should plan to
attend a brief meeting on Wednesday, June 11,
starting at 7 pm, at the North Hero Methodist
Church. Expectations will be discussed, as well
as, rehearsal schedules and hopefully, answers
to any questions you might have regarding the
show.

Pancake Breakfast
The Free and Accepted Masons of Lodge
#11 in Alburgh Center will be having a Pancake
Breakfast to benefit the building restoration fund.
The all-you-care-to-eat menu includes: pancakes
with maple syrup, eggs to order, sausage, toast,
coffee and juice. They will be serving from 9 am
to Noon-- stop by and enjoy.

MIDDLEBURY INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE
PROGRAM: Kudos to the ten students who
participated in the Middlebury Interactive
Language Program October through May. We
were very fortunate to have had the opportunity
to take part in this excellent program from
Middlebury College during its inception year.
The 5th to 8th grade students who took part
demonstrated enthusiasm and perseverance
while learning introductory Spanish, French and
Chinese. This was a voluntary and self-guided
online program requiring initiative, independent
work, and responsibility for completing all
assignments thoroughly and thoughtfully. The
program was administered during the hour
before school four days a week and or at home
if the student wished. We would like to recognize
Taylor Dickie, Colby Geney, Jack Talbot,
Cassandra Libby, Morgan Marckres, Emily
Thomason, Johanna Iula, Joshua Thomason,
Jade Boudreau and Sierra Butler for their hard
work.

EXHIBIT
SUCCESS: Grand Isle’s Student Art Exhibition
was a tremendous success thanks to all the
participants, volunteers, students, family
members, community members and PTA
members! We had a wonderful show! The
students showcased some amazing work
ranging from M C Escher inspired installations
to Egyptian Hieroglyphs to wonderfully detailed
drawings. The show is still on at Grand Isle
School and is hopefully moving up to the Town
Hall in the coming weeks.
One of the many reasons for doing a
fundraising art show was to help raise funds
for art room supplies and hopefully bringing in
some more technology into the school and art
room. We sold student work at various prices
and with each piece sold, 90 percent is going to
the student artist and 10 percent will go to the art
room for more supplies. In total, we have raised
$552.90. Some of the funds raised from the sale
of the artwork were generously donated in full to
the art room. In total, the art room has managed
to raise $91.90, and the rest will be distributed to
the student artists who sold their work. I would
like to thank everyone who made the art show
possible and a big thank you to the Grand Isle
Community. This show was a lot of fun and a
very big success, and we couldn’t have done it
without you!
FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION
Put the Fourth of July on your calendar, and
join the community for the second annual Fourth
of July Celebration at the Grand Isle Recreation
Park! There will be music, DJ, pony rides and
a pick-up softball game with food available! We
would love some volunteers to help out! Find us on

5, thirteen students from Grand Isle School performed at Burlington’s internationally-recognized
Discover Jazz Festival. This was the tenth year that the Grand Isle Jazz Band has performed for this
festival. The students played six pieces that included improvised and written solos. Performing a solo
was a ‘challenge by choice’ for these students and they definitely rose to the challenge! All students
who performed did an amazing job representing their school, their families and most importantly,
themselves. They should all be proud!

It’s early June in the ‘Burgh and life is good.
Our community is buzzing with excitement
as hundreds of Firefighters and EMT’s have
ventured here for an annual training. Kudos to
our local firefighters and volunteers who give
their time to help save lives and who work hard to
make this such a positive event for Alburgh. You
are all heroes! Kids and adults alike are making
summer plans and counting down the days
left of school. It’s truly hard to believe another
year is almost done. If you are looking for local
activities for your school-aged child, please
check out the info below on a summer program
that welcomes Circus Smirkus trainers to work
with the participants right here in Alburgh. Things
are gearing up for another great 4th of July here,
as well. Hope to see many of you participating
in the parade and the town-wide celebration. I
am truly proud to be a member of a community
that comes together to help others, to make life
better and to celebrate special events. Enjoy the
next few weeks of June.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING
The next meeting of the Alburgh Historical
Society will be on Thursday, June 12, at 7 pm,
at the Alburgh Public Library. New members and
anyone interested are always encouraged to

TURKEY AND CHICKEN BISCUIT DINNER
Come to a delicious Turkey and Chicken
Biscuit Dinner at Saint Amadeus Parish Hall on
Main Street in Alburgh on Saturday, June 14 from
5 to 7 pm. The cost for adults will be $8, under
twelve years old: $4. All are welcome, especially

a great meal for all LCI Fishermen. Leave the

ANNUAL MEETING OF ALBURGH FIRE
DISTRICT #1
Alburgh (Springs) Fire District # 1 will hold their
annual meeting on Tuesday, June 24, at 7 pm, at
the pump house at 28 Christopher Road. On the
agenda will be election of a Clerk for a one-year
term, Treasurer- one-year, Tax Collector- oneyear and Prudential Committee Member- threeyear. We will also vote to approve a budget for
the next year.
DRIVER’S ED OFFERED IN ALBURGH
All students interested in taking a local
Driver’s Education Program are asked to meet
at the Alburgh Fire Station on Monday, June 23
at 9 am.
FRIDAY NIGHT BINGO
Friday Night Bingos are back! Islands in the
Sun Seniors, in conjunction with Saint Amadeus
Church, will be holding a Bingo every Friday.
Doors will open at 5 pm, and games begin at
6:30 at the Saint Amadeus Parish Hall. The
snack bar will be open.

The Alburgh Transfer Station is happy to
announce the start up of our free paint recycling
program. The following products are accepted:
interior and exterior architectural paints- latex,
acrylic, water-based, alkyd and oil-based

sealers, undercoats, stains, single component
shellacs, lacquers, urethanes, waterproofing
concrete/masonry/wood sealers and repellents,

The theme of this year’s parade is “Honoring
our Military-Past and Present”. The parade will
start up Main Street at 11 am on Friday, July 4.
Entrants may sign in on Jarvis Lane from 9:30 am
to 10:45 am. There will be trophies for tractors,
floats, bicycles, motorcycles, and horses.

CIRCUS SMIRKUS COMING TO ALBURGH
SCHOOL
The GISU GRACE Program is pleased to
announce that there is a summer full of great
programming for Grand Isle County students.
One of the highlights of the program is that the
first two weeks: June 29 to July 3 and July 7 to
11 will be housed at Alburgh School and Circus
Smirkus, Vermont’s award-winning youth circus,
will lead morning programs.
Their professionally-trained Resident Artists,
each one a seasoned circus veteran, will provide
expert instruction in body movement, juggling,
diabolo, devil sticks, plate spinning and more.
There is a weekly fee, but scholarships and
other payment options are available. Please
don’t let the cost deter you, as you certainly don’t
want to miss out on this exciting opportunity for

North Country Blood Group will be conducting
a blood drive for North Country people on Monday,
June 16, from 3 to 6 pm, at the Champlain Knights
of Columbus Hall in Champlain. ID is required.
This is a wonderful way to help those in need of

A Farmer’s Market is being planned in
Rouses Point this summer on the lawn of the
Dodge Memorial Library every Friday afternoon

CLINTON COUNTY HISTORICAL
ASSOCIATION
There will be a Civil War Re-enactment on
Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15 at the
Beekmantown Recreation Center.
If history and especially the Civil War is
one of your interests, then plan to come to the
Beekmantown Recreation Center located on
Spellman Road. Civil War re-enactors will don
Union blue and Confederate gray to recreate the
life of the men who fought and the civilians who
stayed home to wait for their return.
During the 150th anniversary of the conflict, this
event brings to life one of the most devastating
periods in American History. Spectators are
invited to visit the military camp, which opens
at 9 am on both days. Battle scenarios will take
place at 11 am and 3:30 pm on Saturday and 1
pm on Sunday.
There will be activities for all ages. On
Saturday, the Valley Forge Blacksmith,
Lance Falcon will demonstrate the craft of
turning pieces of metal into works of art. Larry
Bosley and Bob Cheeseman will exhibit and
demonstrate Civil War period tools. Rifle and
cannon demonstrations, drills and camp tours
will also take place at intervals throughout the
weekend. The camp will close to the public at 4
pm on Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday.
The trip back to a tragic time in America’s
history is presented by the Clinton County
Historical Association and hosted by the 11th
NY Battery Light Artillery and Alexandria Battery
CAS. Whether you enjoy history, the Civil War or
just have the urge to do something different on a
summer weekend, you are welcome you to join.
This event is free and open to the public.

The new director at The Alice will be Ellen
Adams who has already begun her new duties.
She moved to the North Country in 2012 from
Saginaw, Michigan, where she taught American
History at Saginaw State University. Since living
in the North Country, she has been affiliated as
a volunteer with the Clinton County Historical
Association. She has previously worked at
Whitney Museum of American Art in New York
City, and has both a Master’s degree and a PhD
in American History.

I want to wish Amanda Palmer good luck in
pursuing a new career. I am sure she will be

many of the programs that were held there during
her tenure and always went away feeling that I
had had either a great learning experience or a
fun evening of entertainment.

History and Welcome Center for opening soon
which will be located at the newly refurbished

World No
Tobacco Day
In recognition of World No Tobacco Day 2014,
which took place on Saturday, May 31, the World
Health Organization (WHO) and partners are calling
on countries to raise taxes on tobacco. Reducing
tobacco consumption saves lives, and in Vermont 800
people die each year from tobacco-related diseases.
According to the WHO, higher taxes are especially
effective in reducing tobacco use, particularly in
preventing young people from starting to smoke.
Not only is tobacco use the single most
preventable cause of death in the United States,
but quitting a half-a-pack per day habit could save a
Vermont smoker $1,700 per year. The ultimate goal
of World No Tobacco Day is to protect present and
future generations not only from the devastating
health consequences of tobacco use, but also against
the social, environmental and economic scourges of
tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.
The Vermont Department of Health urges every
day be No Tobacco Day. The Department supports
multiple methods of tobacco cessation, including
the Vermont Quit Partners, a team of people in
communities across Vermont devoted to providing
support and motivation to help Vermont tobacco
users through the quitting process.

The Selectboard held a special meeting on
May 29 to discuss an appraisal for the Lavin
property. An anonymous resident has offered
to make a $500 donation towards the cost of
the appraisal as long as other residents donate
enough money to cover the rest of the cost of the
appraisal so that no Town money is spent. Stop

has estimated an appraisal will cost between
$1,500 and $2,000, which is below preliminary
estimates. This company has other appraisals
pending and it would be advantageous to get on
the schedule as soon as possible to meet the
September 1st deadline. Also, it is noted that the
appraisal should be done once the waste water
capacity survey is complete.
A motion was adopted to pay up to $2,000
for an appraisal using Town funds, but offset by
any possible donations once the appraisal is
complete.

BIKE FOR LAKE CHAMPLAIN
Support the mission of Friends of Northern
Lake Champlain at their 2014 Switchback
Bike for Lake Champlain on Saturday, June
21. Choose from 25, 50, 70 or 100 mile loops
through the Islands as well as looping around
the lake through Georgia. The ride starts at
Sandbar State Park, with registration beginning
at 6:45 am. Riders aiming for 70 and 100 mile
rides depart between 7:30 and 8 am. 25 and
50 Mile riders depart between 8 and 9 am. The
barbeque featuring Switchback starts at Noon.
Pre-register through the link on their website,
www.northernlakechamplain.org for $35, or a
team of five for $140. Day of ride registration is
$40.
APPLE ISLAND GOLF LEAGUE
The Apple Island Golf Men’s and Women’s
Leagues kicked off their season with a Welcome
Back tournament May 31st. After a playoff, the
team of Dave Villemaire, Deb McCanna, Audrey
Coglin, and Paul Godin took first place, with
the team of Judy Luce, Emile Thibault, Donna
Collette, and Jon Anderson in second. Third
place went to the team of Ray Wilson, John
Collette, and Barbabra Gorchinski.
Thursday June 5, the men’s league played
their weekly scramble tournament on a pleasant,
sunny day. The winners this week at four under
were John Collette, Emile Thibault and Dave
Villemaire. Congratulations on a fine round.
Closest to the hole with a super 26” was Ray
Yandow.
There was a Hole in One on #9. Congratulations
to John Collette, who made the marvelous shot
with a 4 hybrid at 138 yards.
They have a super membership special this

CELEBRATE MRS. LITTLE!
Mrs. Jan Little is laying down her baton as
Folsom’s band teacher after forty years! You
are invited to celebrate her career as our music
teacher at the school’s final concert of the year
on Tuesday, June 10. The evening will begin with
a student art show at 5:30 pm, followed by the
concert at 6. Mrs. Little’s students will perform
along with Ms. Kauffield’s chorus. There will also

Parkinson’s Support
Group in Saint Albans
The Tuesday, June 10 meeting of the
Parkinson’s Support Group will be held at a new
location at 3 Harbor View Drive, Saint Albans at
Homestead, a Pillsbury Senior Community, in
the conference room, next to the library. Due
to a scheduling problem, Deep Brain Implant
will be postponed. Dancing for Parkinson’s, a
participatory videotape by Mark Morris dance
group out of Brooklyn New York will be featured.
Meetings times will return to 10 to 11:30 am.
There is no charge for this meeting. There is
wheelchair accessibility.
The group is open to those with the disease,
their caregivers, and family and loved ones.
The monthly meetings can provide an open
forum to share experiences with others who are
coping with the illness, education and support
and provide recommendations for dealing with
the day-to-day care. Participants can learn from
each other, meet new people, have discussions
and listen to presentations.

Greetings! I just
finished
reading
a letter written to
the editor of The
Islander by school
board member Teri
Geney. In that letter,
Teri talked about her
recent
attendance
at a training session
sponsored
by
the Vermont School Boards Association and the
responsibility School Board members have to the
communities they serve.
Teri states, “One statement has really stuck with
me: that School Boards “are entrusted with ensuring
that the young people of the community receive a
high quality education, and that taxpayers receive an
excellent return on their investment.” She continues
with some great questions, “Are our young people
getting a high quality education? Are we, as taxpayers,
getting an excellent return on our investment?”
Related to the recent petition calling for a
rescission of our budget Teri suggests, “We need to
do two things: we need to do a better job of showing
taxpayers what they’re getting for their investment,
and we need to intensify our efforts to make sure
every dollar we spend is yielding the desired return.”
The ‘we’ in these statements also includes me, and I
wholeheartedly agree!
The 2013 Adequate Yearly Progress Determination
Summary identifies Grand Isle School at year two
of school improvement. The implications of this
determination include: continue SU-level and schoollevel School Improvement Teams; provide written
notice to parents that school has not met AYP; offer
Supplemental Educational Services if Title I School;
review, revise and implement School Improvement
Plan.
This week, the Grand Isle Supervisory Union
(GISU) Superintendent will meet with myself,
other GISU principals and our School Effectiveness
Coordinator from the Agency of Education. The
purpose is to review and revise our GISU and local
improvement plan. Revisions to our plan will be made
available once finalized. All other criteria set forth by
the Agency of Education as noted have been met.
More locally, Grand Isle staff has had a focus on
using data as an integral part of designing instruction.
This work is guided by a data cycle outlined by
specific steps that include: formative pre-assessment;
prioritizing student needs; selecting common
instructional strategies; examining work samples;
analyze and discuss strategies and make necessary
adjustments and administer post assessment and
evaluate results.
Preliminary results from the last data cycle of
the elementary grades show significant gains in
Language Arts and Math depending on the focus. A
few examples are: overall achievement levels have
increased by 36 percent in reading comprehension of
fiction text in 1st grade and an overall increase by 60
percent in addition math facts in 2nd grade. We also
saw a 38 percent overall increase of Kindergarten’s
locomotor skills in Physical Education. Middle
School data teams are in the process of evaluating
their data results.
Data-based decision making allows classroom
teachers to design and deliver instruction toward
the needs of all learners. A Multi-Tiered Systems
of Support process allows our teachers to examine
how well they already use data to make instructional
decisions for student improvement and how well
current services for students are coordinated and
integrated, NEA Education Policy and Practice
(2010). A GIS team will be attending a conference
from June 23 to 26 on effective implementation of
MTSS. We are excited to learn more about designing
intentional and purposeful strategies to implement
change with a positive and productive problemsolving process.

Leona Richards Mumley, 92, a resident
of this community all of her lifetime, passed
away Thursday evening, December 12, 2013, at
Franklin County Rehab in Saint Albans following
a lingering illness.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be
celebrated Thursday, June 12, 2014, at 11 am,
from Saint Amadeus Church in Alburgh. Father
Lawrence P. Ridgley will be celebrant and homilist.

Switchback Bike for
the Lake
On Saturday, June 21, Friends of Northern
Lake Champlain (FNLC) and Switchback Brewery
are teaming up to offer the Switchback Bike for
the Lake. Participants will be able to choose
from 25, 50, 70, or 100 mile loops around Lake
Champlain. The event will begin and end at the
Sandbar State Park.
“The Bike for the Lake Event is an important
event for our organization.” Explains Denise
Smith, Executive Director of the Friends of
Northern Lake Champlain. “This event is
paramount in helping us raise money, awareness,
and support for the work we are doing to help
curb the tide of pollution in Lake Champlain.”
The cost to register is $35. Day of registration
is $40 and riders will have an opportunity to
purchase a “Save The Lake Cycling Jersey” FOR
$75 the day of the race. Registration begins
at 6:45am. Water stops are sponsored by
Hero’s Welcome, The Bay Side and The Bay
Store, Champlain Orthodontic Association,
and Snowfarm Winery. The Boyscouts will be
helping with the ride and doing the BBQ for the
event in the park afterwards. Local restaurants
in St. Albans and the Islands will be offering
Switchback specials that week-end in support of
the Friends of Northern Lake Champlain.
FNLC is a non-profit organization that acts to
clean the waters of northern Lake Champlain and
its watershed by working collaboratively with
citizens, businesses, farmers and government in
order to reduce land-use pollution. Our focus
is on catalyzing the actions and accountability
needed to reduce land-use pollution and securing
the essential local, state, and federal funding

It is very warm tonight. The mornings
have been cool lately, and it warms up in the
afternoons; however, it has been good sleeping
weather. We are suppose to get quite warm
weather this weekend.
AM RADIO
There is something local in the air! Bill and
Terry are happy to be providing the operation
of a low power hobby AM radio station. It is
called WILM and is in 1630 on your am radio
dial. They are on the air 24 hours now with talk
radio in the evening at 9 pm. Their coverage
area is strongest around the middle of Isle La
Motte, North Hero, Alburgh, Swanton, Clinton
County, New York and Quebec. A good receiver,
with possibly an outdoor antenna, will improve
chances of hearing them. A car radio is good.
They have a mixed format including 40s, 50s,
60s, 70s, and 80s, country and old-time radio.
Please feel free to contact the station with any
ideas of things you’d like to hear, and let them
know where they are being heard-- this will help
them a lot! There are also questionnaires at the
Town Clerk’s Office and Isle La Motte Store.
SCHOOL NOTES
This has been quite a busy week, with classes
as usual, and there are special spring events
coming up. Graduation will be next week, and
there will be a Field Day on the 19th with only
two weeks left.
On Friday of this week, the 2-3 class
interviewed me. They asked questions about my
personal life: where I was born and when and
where I went to school and was married. They
also asked about my likes and the things that
had changed during my life, etc. They asked
some very good questions.
We have three people retiring from our school
including the Art teacher, the Music teacher and
the Janitor. We will miss them, and we wish them
all well.

An Abenaki Wedding
June is traditionally the month for weddings.
To celebrate this tradition the Missisquoi National
Wildlife refuge will host an informational meeting
on Indigenous courtship and marriage. Professor
Fred Wiseman will first discuss how young men
and women find each other and fall in love. From
then on it becomes a discussion between the lovers
families and formal petitions for betrothal using
wampum belts or strings and other kinds of gifts, and
complex decisions by each families leaders regarding
the benefits of the young man or young woman for
their respective families. Often a medicine person is
consulted to ensure that the two spirits can merge
seamlessly. The wedding itself is both a village
and inter-village affair just like today with complex
social, religious, and sometimes political protocols
for everything from cannon fire announcing the
arrival of the bride, through the wedding feast and
the attendees accompanying the couple to their
wedding bed.
They will illustrate the process through role
play, examination of artifacts and stories regarding
traditional weddings. Just in case the marriage does
not succeed, Professor Wiseman will also mention
how the union can be dissolved.
This event will be held at the Missisquoi National
Wildlife Refuge on Friday, June 20 from 6 to 8 pm.

The North Hero Volunteer Fire Department
(NHVFD) Women’s Auxiliary is getting ready
for their annual sale. They will be available to
accept your donations of clean, salable items on
Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, from 10 am
to 3 pm, at Camp Ingalls in North Hero .
If these hours are inconvenient for you, call

will make arrangements for another time. This
annual Flea Market supports the North Hero
Volunteer Fire Department. It will be at Camp
Ingalls on Saturday, June 21, from 9 am to 4 pm,
and Sunday, June 22 from 10 am to 2 pm.
NORTH HERO REAPPRAISAL UPDATE
FROM YOUR LISTERS
North Hero is in the process of finalizing
the 2014 Reappraisal. The Vermont Appraisal
Company has made follow up visits this spring
that covered new construction and open building
permits. During the winter months, the Appraisers
and the Listers reviewed data, completed land
and waterfront schedules and researched recent
market sales and trends to establish Fair Market
Value. These results will be available to property
owners by the end of June 2014.
As required by Vermont State Law, all property
owners will receive an individual “Change of
Appraisal Notice” sent by US Postal Service
Certificate of Mailing that will include both their
old and new property values. Copies of the 2014
Town-wide Reappraisal Booklet, that list all
properties in town, will be available on the town
website: www.northherovt.com, in PDF format,
and in booklet form at both the Town Office and
the North Hero Library.
When the project is finished and immediately
after the notices go out, appraisers from
Vermont Appraisal Company and the Listers will
be holding informal informational meetings prior
to the formal Grievance schedule so that we
may explain the assessment process. Property
owners may come in, ask questions and go over
their property record(s) at this time. We strongly
recommend you become familiar with the North
Hero real estate market and your property
value(s) in particular. We recommend that every
property owner review their property records
for accuracy. The instructions for Grievance
Hearings will be included in both the Change of
Appraisal Notice and the Reappraisal Booklet.
Over the course of the past two years, the
Vermont Appraisal Company and the Listers have
visited over 1,250 homes, commercial properties
and parcels of vacant land in North Hero. The
successful collection of data contributes to the
fairness and accuracy of this appraisal and is
due both to the hard work of the VAC and the
Listers, and to the remarkable cooperation of
the North Hero property owners. For this, we are
deeply indebted to you.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Much work has been done at Camp Ingalls to
prepare it for the summer season, but there is still
plenty left to do. Future plans include painting,
repairing windows, stabilizing the small cabins,
building stair railings and generally preparing the
facilities for the North Hero Recreation summer
camps, as well as, several Island Arts summer

North Hero School is now, officially, fun for all
ages. Our new play structure is up and available
to students from ages 3 to 99. If you are over 90,
I would like to recommend that you make safe
body choices though. For your website design
needs, please contact Julow Computing. For
your paint and glass, please call Able Paint and
Glass. For all ski gear and apparel, go to Slope
Style, and for all of your Mckitty needs, please
contact Mr. Mckitty. The previously mentioned
folks took a day away from their work schedule
to build the structure, and we really appreciate it.
The recent and frightening events in Wisconsin
need to be a reminder to every parent, myself
included, that we need to closely monitor our
kiddos internet use. The internet is like the Wild
West. It is an untamed territory, and for kiddos
who are already navigating a challenging time
the internet needs to be discussed as we would
a new friend. Please, ask many questions.
We are taking applications for preschool next
year. Our program is nearly full. The program
is offered for students three and four years of
age, and is meant to support students preparing
for their academic journey ahead. We are also
taking applications for our after care program.
This program tags with preschool and serves as
daycare from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. There is a
very reasonable weekly fee for the after care. If
interested please contact me really soon.
Wednesday, June 11 is our play at the North
Hero Town Hall. At 6:30 pm, we will be off to
see the Wizard. Costuming instructions have
gone home with children. Please contact us with
questions, and please come prepared to sing
and clap.
Monday, June 16 is our Field Day. There will
be a barbecue lunch grilled up by Ms. Tina and
the Abbey. Please stop by and eat a burger.
�June 16 is also our Celebration of Learning/
Graduation/Capstone Project presentations. The
ceremonies and good feelings begin at 6:30 pm.
Please come celebrate with Velia and Madison.
Wednesday, June 18 is our local awards
ceremony. This will take place from 10 to 11 am
here at school. This is an annual time to honor
hard work and positive choices. Please come on
by.
Thursday, June 19, the 3rd and 4th grade
will be displaying a wax museum of life
size representations of figures in Vermont’s
Revolutionary Era History. I heard Ethan Allen
will be available for questions. The event will
take place in the gym from 12:30 to 1:30 pm.
Friday, June 20 is our last day. It is a halfday and a community-supported potluck lunch.
I will send further details about this event next
week. For now though, I am all out of space. Be
awesome.

The “Islanders” 6th grade girls AAU basketball team would like to thank everyone who contributed to their
fundraising efforts to participate in the Adidas Headliners Tournament in Lake George this past weekend.

251 Club Of Vermont Celebrates
60th With New Travel Journal
The 251 Club of Vermont, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2014,
exists to encourage members to visit all of the state’s 251 towns and
cities. Now the task has been made more convenient and enjoyable
with the publication of a new travel journal designed specifically for the
Vermont explorer.
“This project is as purely Vermont
as a quart of maple syrup,” says
Sandy Levesque, club director and
editor of the journal. “Vintage

Grand Isle County Mentoring
End-of-the-Year Dinner

Last Monday evening about 80 mentors, mentees and their families gathered in the Grand Isle School
cafeteria for an end of the year celebration dinner. This year we had 45 matches throughout the Grand Isle
Schools. Grand Isle County Mentoring is a school-based mentoring program, which matches community
children with adults who have similar interests. They meet once a week for one hour in the school at a mutually
convenient time and develop a relationship. During their time together they participate in many activities on
the school grounds, including games, arts and crafts, cooking and conversation. We have wonderful mentors
and hope that you will consider joining them. Children from all five island schools are involved in the program
and range from grades K to 8. Every child who wants a mentor should have one! Mentoring has proven results
for both the children and adults who care enough to make the commitment of just one hour a week. “Make
a difference in a youth’s life; be a mentor.”

Tournament and Best Ball Scramble
in Alburgh
Aerie #4533 will hold a Golf Tournament on Friday August 22 at the Alburg Golf Links Best Ball
Scramble. There will be a shotgun start at 10 am with registration starting at 9. The entry fee is

Susan Larkin Spring Exhibition
Isle La Motte Painter, Susan Larkin, will be featured in an exhibition of
her recent paintings in oils at the Fisk Farm Arts Barn in Isle La Motte from
now until June 30. Susan is an award-winning artist and is known for her
depictions of daily life in the Champlain Islands and Northern Vermont.
This show is a visual diary of local scenes through the four seasons of the

The Milton Farmers Market is open for the
season on Thursdays from 4 to 7 pm. In a
new, more visible location this summer, near

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
The last day of school for Milton Town School
District students will be Thursday, June 12.
Grades 6 to 12, except 8th grade-- see below,
will dismiss at 11 am. Grades K to 5 will dismiss
at Noon. Lunch will be served before dismissing
students.

Celebration on Wednesday, June 11, beginning
at 6:30 pm, in the Milton High School Gymnasium.
Immediately following our celebration, there will
be a dance for the students in the High School

LIBRARY NOTES
SUMMER READING PLANS: Plans for
another exciting reading program are well under
way; the theme this summer is “Fizz, Boom,
Read!”, and it is all about science! The program
for kids ages two to twelve is called “Fizz Boom
Read” and the teen program for ages twelve and
up is called “Spark A Reaction”. Registration and
sign ups will be on Monday, June 16.This year,
the library will also be a meal-site for children up
to eighteen years of age. Some of the scheduled
events are a magic show, science magic, Lego
for littles, book discussions, teen nights, crafts,
films and more. Summer volunteers are needed
and welcome-- you get the opportunity to fill a
volunteer requirement and have fun at the same
time.
FOR ADULTS AT THE LIBRARY: There will
be a summer reading raffle for adults again
this summer-- a Kindle Fire is the incentive
for reading as much as you can. Crafting,
computers, putting up food and more are on the
horizon. Also, remember that the weekly Bridge
Club meets every Wednesday, from 1 to 3 pm, for
friendly games; all levels are welcome, including
beginners.

the Town of Grand Isle have this day completed
the abstract of individual lists of persons, copartnerships, associations, and corporations
owning taxable property in said town on the first
day of April, 2014 that they have this day lodged
the same in the office of the clerk of said town for
the inspection of taxpayers; that on the 18th day

“Being an unimproved rectangular shaped parcel
of land consisting of .29 acre, more or less,
situated along the southeasterly side of Route
129, so-called, in the Town of lsle La Motte. Said
parcel is more particularly described as follows:
Commencing at a point situated along the
southeasterly side of the aforementioned Route
129, so-called, said point also being marked by
an iron post in the ground resting on the common
boundary between the grantor’s land and premises
and those of the grantees; thence proceeding along
the southeasterly side of the aforementioned
Route 129 in a generally northerly direction a
distance of 33 feet, more or less, to a point marked
by an iron post in the ground; thence turning at a
right angle and proceeding in a generally easterly
direction a distance of 397 feet, more or less, to
a point marked by an iron post in the ground;
thence turning at a right angle and proceeding in
a generally southerly direction a distance of 33
feet, more or less, to a point marked by an iron

Bar State Park, Knights Point State Park and Alburgh Dunes State Park. Lessons are appropriate for
ages 3 and up and designed for all ability levels, including “Y Progressive Swim” levels, “Pike” through
“Minnow”. Each session offers eight lessons starting from 10 am to Noon. All instructors are CPR,
First Aid, AED and Lifeguard certified. Safety comes first and all lessons are taught in a progressive
manner with plenty of room for fun! It is never too late to learn how to swim. The following sessions
are offered: June 23 to July 3 at Sand Bar State Park; July 7 to 18 at Alburgh Dunes State Park; July 21
to August 1 at Knights Point State Park and July 21 to August 1 at Sand Bar State Park
Financial assistance is provided by your Grand Isle County town and scholarships are offered by

Granny’s Attic Opening Soon
Granny’s Attic is opening for the season a week earlier this year, and they are celebrating there
61 year in business! Some new changes have been made, and many “new” items have been added
to the Attic.
The proceeds from the Attic sales go to many non-profit groups in South Hero, such as the Fire
Department and Rescue team; VFW flags for the cemetery, as well as, those flying on South Street
and Route 2. RIF (Reading is Fundamental), Folsom School, the Library, CHAMP, Sheriff’s R&R Camp,
mentoring and others.
Granny’s Attic volunteers are very grateful and thank the many individuals who donate their items
to the Attic.
Hours of operation are Fridays from 1 to 4 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. To volunteer for

Festival of the Islands Is Changing
As most of you know, the Festival of the Islands was created to bring attention and visitors to all the
towns of Grand Isle. More visitors means more opportunities for local businesses to increase sales,
non-profits to raise needed funds, and visitors to discover the beauties of the Champlain Islands
and plan return trips. In the past, donations of $20 have been requested from local businesses to
be represented on the map which was produced that listed all the sales, ‘deals’ and special events
that were being held that weekend. Non-profits were listed at no cost to them. Steamers were sold
to signal participation in Festival and draw attention to what was offered. Monies remaining were
donated to CIDER.
This year, the Festival of the Islands will be held, as it is each year, on the last weekend in July. The
change is that we will no longer be collecting donations from businesses. We have experience with
the prior years’ maps and production of them does not require a great deal of time. We will produce
the map and distribute it for free. Any business or non-profit wishing to have their sales or special
events publicized may do so by contacting us and letting us know what they will be offering during
the Festival. In addition, copies of the maps will be available through email to anyone who wishes
to duplicate, share and distribute it to visitors and friends, thus supporting our non-profits and local
businesses. With social media developing as it has, this is both possible and easy.
The other change is based on experience gained over the last few years. Yard sales, flea markets
and rummages sales remain as huge attractions for people who want bargains, rare finds or merely
to explore on a beautiful drive through the Islands. So, we would like encourage and be able to
mention those types of sales in all of the off Island advertising that will be done. Last year, Alburgh
held a town-wide sale during the Festival. It was a huge success. Droves of people, attracted by the
publicity of the Festival, traveled from one place to another, chatting, shopping and enjoying the
atmosphere created by people meeting people. Of course, the local businesses benefitted because
our visitors were curious, needed to buy gas and replenish their strength through food and beverage.
SO… If you want your business or non-profit to be represented on the Festival map which will be
widely publicized, we are asking that you do three things: Create a special event, let us know what
you are doing so that it can be listed on the map of the Festival and finally, request a map and share
it with your customers through duplication or posting. If private individuals wish to do a yard sale
during that time to take advantage of all the visitors, please let us know so we have an idea of the
total number of sales and can add that to the publicity. Streamers may be purchased, as in other
years, to highlight your participation and draw attention to your sale.

Yelana and her family own Truelight Farm in North
Hero where they host a menagerie of sheep, alpacas,
peacocks, angora goats, chicken, geese, ducks, five
dogs and one cat.
One wonders where she can find time to do her
artwork!
Yelena’s art connection can be traced back to her
childhood in Moscow Russia where she studied at
the hand of her uncle, a noted pen and ink artist. In
her teens she attended University where she studied
architecture. Fleeing Soviet Russia, she moved to New
York City where she honed her skills as a seamstress
working on the designs of many known designers and
developing her own children’s line, Svetlana. Yearning
to go back to her artistic routes led her to the design
and sale of her own line of fabric dolls at juried craft
shows in NYC and the greater New York area. In turn,
this led to her creation of hand crafted and painted
porcelain dolls and porcelain reproductions of dolls
from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lush
color and texture provided by the nature found in
Vermont got her creating paintings in oils and acrylics.
Finally, a long artistic journey settled into a passion
for the watercolor efforts she now creates and has on
display for you here today. Her work can now be seen
in private and corporate collections throughout New
