Free Apple ID account using iTunes
In this lesson you will learn how to create your free Apple ID without a credit card using iTunes. You can use
this free account to download free applications, music, movies and shows. You can also use this account with a
gift card to purchase items that are not free. This way you won't need to supply credit card information.
Your first step is to launch iTunes on your computer. In Apple you will find iTunes in the Applications folder.
In Windows you will find iTunes by clicking the Start button and then looking under all applications. If iTunes
is not installed you will need to install it before you begin. The iTunes application is free and you can download
it from Apple's web page at http://www.apple.com/iTunes
Find a free application
Before you can qualify for a free account you need to purchase a free application. Crazy? Yes it is, but this is
how it works. In iTunes go to the search bar and look for a free application. I know the Tango Rx application is
free so I will use that in this example, but it can be any free application.
Enter a search
Enter your search in the search box and press the return key on Apple or Enter on Windows.

Select the application
Click once on the application icon.

Click to purchase
To purchase the free application click on the Free App button.

Create a new account
The pop up that opens will allow you to enter an existing Apple ID account or create a new account. That's what
we will do in this example. Click the Create New Account button.
Welcome and continue
Click continue in the welcome screen.

A license agreement
This page displays the Apple Store license agreement. Read through it if you like but you will need to place a
checkmark on the I have read and agree to these terms and conditions box. Once you do the Agree button will
become active. This screen shot is a little small so take a look at the next example for a larger view.

The agree button will become active once you place a check mark above. Click the Agree button to continue to
the next step.

Apple ID details
This page requests some information for your Apple ID. You will need to enter your email and a password. You
will also need to think of a question you can easily remember to retrieve your password just in case your forget.
I recommend that if you are going to use this account for school items that you use your district email. You can
use any email you like if you don't want to use your district email. Remember, you can create as many free Apple
IDs as you like but you should use only one at a time per device. Let's look at what your information might look
like when entered.
A note about passwords
In this example you can see that I used my district email because I intend to use it for district purchased
applications.
When you click in the password field you will see a dialogue box that provides information about the password
you need to create. These instructions require you to use an upper case letter, a lower case letter, a number and it
must be at least 8 characters long. This makes it a little difficult to create a password that is easy to remember.
You might try something you know very well like the name of your child or pet. Let's say your pets name is
Lassie. Your password can then be Lassie01. This password has an upper case letter, lower case letters and at
least one number. The password is also at least 8 characters long. It is also very easy to remember.
Create a password and enter it into both fields.

A recovery questions
In this section you should think of a question that you can use to recover the password. Enter your date of birth.
This is important so that you can download age appropriate apps, music, movies and shows.

News options
The last thing before you continue is to choose to opt in or out of receiving news from Apple. In this example I
opted out of the newsletters. Click the continue button for the next step.
Payment method
This where you choose to create your free account. Click the None button fro the free account.

No payment method
Once you click the None option the credit card information field will be replaced with a redeem code or gift
certificate code box. This is where you will be able to enter gift card information. We will cover gift cards in a
future lesson. Don't worry if you don't have a gift card or redemption code. You won't need it for the rest of this
tutorial.
Billing Information
You will need to enter your name and address into the section below. This is the section where you can use your
campus address and phone number if you don't want to use your personal information.

In this example I have used the district address for my billing address. This does not mean I will receive bills or
statements at this address.
Create Apple ID
After you have entered your billing information you will see the Create Apple ID button. Click this button for
the next step.

Verify Your Apple ID
You will need to verify your Apple ID before it becomes available. An email will be sent to the address your
provided in a previous step. Leave this box open just in case you did not receive the email. There is a link to the
lower right of the envelope that resends the email verification. I checked at Lotus Notes does not block this email
or place it into your junk folder. Let's look at the email verification link.

In your email you will receive a message similar to this one. Click the Verify Now link.
Sign in to verify
The link you clicked earlier will take you to a page where you will enter your Apple ID email and your Apple ID
password.

In this example I have entered my Apple ID username and password. Click the Verify Address button to
continue.
Email address has been verified
The next page will confirm that you correctly verified your email address. Click the button that reads Return to
the Store.

Congratulations
You will see a congratulations screen and a button in the lower right to take you to the iTunes store. Your free
account is now active and ready for you to download tons of free stuff. Remember, you can only download frees
stuff. If you click on something that requires a purchase you will be prompted to enter your credit card
information.
