Rillito Park 2012 Meet
Even though the economy is in the muck bin and hay is selling
for $20.00 a bale, the sun was shining in Tucson on the weekend
of January 28th & 29th, and just under 9,000 fans passed through
the turnstiles at Rillito Park. The horses were back! The
excitement was electric! Saturday’s eight race card featured
five Quarter Horse races and three Thoroughbred races. Rillito
Park is known as the birthplace of Quarter Horse racing and its
Quarter Horse races consistently out handle the Thoroughbred
races. However, Rillito is “an equal opportunity track” so
Sunday’s race card consisted of five Thoroughbred races and
three Quarter Horse races.
The highlight of the weekend was the Rillito Park Quarter Horse
Derby which was run on Sunday A full gate of eight lined up
for the 350 yard dash. Trainer, Monica Ortega’s Endless Speed,
ignored the fact that he was the longest shot on the board and
with Rick Oliver in the irons he finished 1/2 length ahead of the
second place horse, Mo Money Mo Problems. He lit up the tote
board paying $54..60, $19.60 and $8.20 to his supporters. The
trifecta of 1-7-4 returned a whopping $5,706.00.
Rillito Park was dark on February 4th & 5th (Super Bowl
weekend). Racing returned on February 11th & 12th A jockey’s
duel developed on Saturday’s card with Rick Oliver winning
four races and Carl Williams winning three. The only other
rider to make it to the winner’s circle was Jarell James in the 6th
race. Saturday’s feature race was the John Deere/Rillito Park
Bonus Challenge, a Quarter Horse Stake going 330 yards for a
purse of $8,400. Hawk in Traffic left the gate without his rider
and was declared a non-starter. Rick Oliver teamed with Dennis
Marstellar’s Buck El Up for the victory. Eyes Open a Little,
ridden by David Reyes-Frisby was out nodded at the wire.
The Quarter Horses again took center stage on Sunday in the
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom stake so named because the distance is only
100 yards and these guys are flying when they cross the finish
line. One must have a lot of faith in his horse to enter this race
because there is a $1,000 entry fee, PCHA adds $500 and the
WINNER TAKES ALL. This year’s winner of the $8,500 was
Fishers Flash owned by Fernando Castro, trained by Armando
Castellanos and ridden to victory by Emilio Tapia. This son of
Fishers Dash flashed his speed finishing 3/4 of a length in front
of Lil Lickitee Spit. Carl Williams added two more wins Sunday
while Daniel Aguilar visited the winner’s circle three times.
Three Thoroughbred trials were run on Saturday, February
18th for the Rillito Park Hopeful Maiden Stakes. The final was
run on March 3, 2012, at a distance of 5 1/2 furlongs with an
estimated purse of $6,000. The trials were won by owner/trainer
Jeff D Hudson’s Gone Jet with Carl Williams up, Oh Me Oh My
owned by Jocelyn A. Ortega and trained by Monica Ortega with
Rick Oliver in the irons, and Swiss Jewel, owned and trained by
Armando Castellanos and piloted by Carl Williams. The eight
horses which qualified for the Hopeful Stakes were: Gone Jet,
Taboose, Catch the King, Oh Me Oh My, Starting Time, Swiss
4 Arizona Thoroughbred April/May/June
Jewel, Mr. Trendy and Pinky’s Boots.
On February 19th, 4,665 fans braved breezy conditions to wager
on five Thoroughbred and thee Quarter Horse races. Rider, Carl
Williams, was on fire, winning half of the races on Saturday’s
card and moving to the top of the jockey standings with 14 wins.
Rick Oliver was chasing him with 20 wins.
With Rillito’s grandstand and clubhouse so close to the track,
our fans really feel as though they are part of the action and now
they can be part of history. On November 18, 2011, the entire
88 acres comprising Rillito Park Racetrack were approved for
membership in the Arizona Historical Society. We are now
waiting for approval by the National Historical Society. We hope
that these historical designations will hold the bulldozers at bay
and keep the horses running at Rillito Park!
The death of County Fair horse racing in Arizona and the
cancelling of Arizona’s summer racing meet at Yavapai Downs
in Prescott, AZ, served to provide extra challenges for Rillito’s
Racing Secretary, Susan Rich. She compromised by reducing
the number of races to 8 per day (rather than 9 or 10) and she got
on the phone. If a trainer had a horse that fit Susan’s conditions,
it was best if the hose was entered. Excuses for not entering
were not well received. Thanks to Susan’s diligence and our
loyal horsemen, the races got filled. Some of our Thoroughbreds
arrived wearing longer than desirable coats, but they were ready
to run. As one would expect at “The birth place of Quarter Horse
racing”, the Quarter Horses were shining like Indy cars at the
Indianapolis 500 and were real crowd pleasers as they strutted
their stuff.
The card on Sunday, February 28, 2012, contained six Quarter
horse Trials going 350 yards for the Rillito Park Maiden Stake
which was held on Sunday, March 11, 2012. The eight finalist
were Runaway N Zoom, One Fabulous Choice, Teller to Love
Me, Chic N Six, RA Dashing Beduino, First American Pie, Sally
Wood, and Genuine Duena. It took the camera to determine the
order of finish. Teller to Love Me, owned by Francisco Vallejo,
trained by Ramon Fontes, Jr. and ridden by Hector Aldree
emerged the winner.
The Thoroughbred Rillito Park Hopeful Maiden Stakes going
5/1/2 furlongs was run as the featured race on Saturday, March 3,
2012 Mr. Trendy scratched from the race. Jeff Hudson’s Gone
Jet piloted by Daniel Aguilar made every pole a winning one as
he took the field wire to wire.
The distance lengthened for the feature race on Sunday, March
4, 2012. It was the Dr. Dale Shirley Memorial Race going 6 1/2
furlongs. A full field of eight faced the starter, and it was a very
impressive Del Mar Drama owned by Billy, Donna & Justin
Hays and trained by John H. Schmitt who kicked clear under the
capable handling of Delano Lucero to win for 4 1/2 lengths.

to bring good luck.

April/May/June Arizona Thoroughbred 5
The sun continued shining all weekend. Under blue skies with
temperatures in the 70’s the Pete Selin Memorial Happy Minute
Thoroughbred Stake going 5 1/2 furlongs was the feature race
on Sunday, March 11, 2012. Jarell James ode Xstransporatation
to victory in this stake race for fillies and mares. This speedy
mare is owned by Karla De Jesus Garcia and is trained by Jesus
Fernando Ortega, Sr.
Our beautiful weather deserted us on Sunday, March 18,
2012. After being pelted with rain all morning, our post time
temperature was in the 50’s with a chilly wind and more rain
threatening. The track was sealed and there were many votes to
cancel the day’s races. However, Director of Racing, Pat White,
took the stance that “the show must go on”, the jockeys were
okay with getting muddy, and the races went on as scheduled.
However, some of the race distances had to be changed because
of the difficulty in moving the starting gate. All 5 1/2 furlong
races were run at 6 1/2 which made for some interesting
handicapping and some nice payoffs. The feature race of the day
was The Paloma Stakes going 4 furlongs. Deciding he didn’t
want to be covered with mud, Jarell James took Little Dude right
to the front and they maintained that position to the wire. Scary
Midnight finished second, 7 lengths ahead of third place Waverly
Girl.
We prayed for sunshine and temperatures in the 80’s for closing
weekend, March 24th & 25th, and our prayers were answered.
They say that “Absence makes the heart grow fonder: Perhaps
even the thought of an extended absence causes more fondness
because when the word gets out that this is the last weekend of
the year that the horses will be running at Rillito Park, the fans
flock to the tack. Closing weekend combined with beautiful
weather is always a winning exacta. More than 10,000 fans
passed the turnstiles to watch Rillito’s Thoroughbred and
Quarter Horses compete at Rillito Park for the final time in 2012.
Saturday’s program featured 9 races while Sunday’s contained 10
races.
Sunday’s feature race was the Hoard and Charlotte King
Memorial, a Quarter Horse Stake going 870 yards. Through the
years, veteran trainer, Wayne Brasher, has proven to be almost
unbeatable in this race. This year he sent two horses to the post
and picked on the morning line to run 1/2. PB Mr Phil raced out
of the number 4 post position and Actually ran from the number 5
post position. After leading for most of the race, Pb Mr Phil was
passed in the turn by his stable mate and a 5-4 finished looked
inevitable. However, in the deep stretch, Pb Mr Phil stepped
on a front shoe, slowing him dramatically and taking him off
of the board. Thoroughbred Rumored Overnight was second
with Thoroughbred Dr. Dizzle third. Luckily Pb Mr. Phil was
not injured and will race another day. Meantime, Mr. Brasher
extended his King Memorial victories to 11.
Sunday’s card was packed with exciting races The Rillito Park
Budweiser Mile, which is actually 1 1/16 miles was sandwiched
between three Quarter Horses Stakes. Luckily, the riders were on
their toes and everybody remembered the race wasn’t over until
they had crossed the finish line twice. Del Mar Drama, winner
of the Dr Dale Shirley Memorial race at 6 1/2 furlongs proved to
6 Arizona Thoroughbred April/May/June
January/February
be much the best. With Delano Lucero again in the irons, he left
the field in his wake and earned a 2 for 2 win record in stakes
races at Rillito this meet. His trainer, John H. Schmitt, had been
very confident in this bay gelding who was bred in California by
Tommy Town Thoroughbreds.
The Rukin Jelks Quarter Horse Stakes was run at 350 yards
and had a purse of $18,500. Trials had been run on March 10,
2012 and the finalist were By Fly First Class, A Blazin Dash,
Hawks Three Chick, Jess Creek Manor, Fly Jess for Perks, Jrm
Scottermegone, Mo Money Mo Problems and a Real Dasher
Hawks Three Chick and Mo Money Mo Problems were the
morning line and crowd favorites and they did not disappoint.
Mo Money Mo Problems, owned and trained by Omar E. Lorta,
and ridden by outstanding Quarter Horse ride, Porfirio Cano,
crossed the wire first, just ahead of flying Hawks Three Chicks.
A Real Dasher completed the trifecta.
The Hasta La Vista Quarter Horse Stake drew so many entrants
that Racing Secretary, Susan Rich, had to make two races. All of
these owners and trainers must have lots of confidence in their
horses because the entry fee is $2,500 and the WINNER TAKES
ALL in these races. The first division had 7 horses and a purse of
$18,000 (including $500 added by PCHA). The distance was 220
yards, and these guys were flying. The race was won by Separate
Dasher, trained by Caesar Lopez, owned by Camacho & S & R
Gastelum, and ridden to victory by David Reyes-Frisby.
The second Hasta La Vista was truly the last official race of the
season. It had 8 head and a purse of $20,500 (including $500
added by PCHA). The crowd stayed to watch Lil Lickitee Spit
come home the winner with Luis W Gutierrez in the irons for
owner/trainer Jose Botello.
The fans were reluctant to leave and stayed for the annual pony
rider race of approximately 60 yards which was won for the
second year in a row by pony rider Hailie Ybarra who is the new
bride of rider Michael Ybarra. This is also a winner take all race
with $100 cash going to the winner.
Jockey, Carl Williams, who is new to Rillito Park, jumped out to
an early lead in the jockey standings and never looked back. He
added validity to the strategy of going to the front and making
them catch you. Even though he took a couple of weekends off
to race at Turf Paradise and in spite of the fact that our muddy
track was not to his liking, his lead was insurmountable. He
resumed his winning ways on closing weekend and fought off his
competition to win handily.
The leading trainer race was closely contested between two
popular trainers, Caesar Lopez and Monica Ortega. It was
decided on closing day with Caesar Lopez taking the victory.
The sun was starting to go down as the last fans drove away from
Rillito Park -THE FUN PLACE TO RUN.

Arizona Stallion Stakes - April 7, 2012
A Political Time - J Lloyd Yother, Owner
The traditional Arizona Stallion Stakes, seven and one-half furlongs on the grass drew a field of seven. A Political Time, Ten Ninety
Seven, Hindu Kush and She's a Hit previously tried their footing on the grass. She's a Hit and Hindu Kush finished 4th and 3rd in the
Scottsdale Handicap. A Political Time and Ten Ninety Seven tackled the turf in the Tempe Handicap. Ten Ninety Seven advanced
inside, came up short and finished fifth. A Political Time was near the lead going to the far turn when he had to check hard, losing all
chances to gain ground. He faded to ninth. The gelding owned by J. Lloyd Yother was not to be denied in his second try on the lawn.
He was away well, and ridden out to a two length victory. The grass truly was greener on April 7th for A Political Time.

In 1853, James Gadsden, a U. S. Diplomate
negotiated a purchase of land known as the Gadsden
Purchase from Mexico, which became part of New
Mexico and Arizona.
In 2010, agent, Marvin Fleming, a noted breeder in
Arizona, purchased a weanling from the November
Keeneland sale. This transaction became part of
Arizona. The gelding was gifted to the U of A equine
program.
The University of Arizona consigned Gadsden
Purchase to the 2011 ATBA as a yearling. The dark
bay or brown gelding was the second horse to enter
the sale ring. The bidding stopped at $2,500 and
trainer Doug Oliver was the new owner.
Gadsden Purchase made his debut in the ATBA
Spring Sale Stake trials, with a winning style.
Twelve juveniles were set to go postward in the
ATBA Spring Sale Stake, headed by trial winners
Youbetshewon, Gadsden Purchase and My little

was a steward scratch.
Gadsden Purchase broke on top and never looked back.

LEGISLATIVE REPORT
by Elaine Arena, ATBA Lobbyists
We are pleased to report that the budget recently signed
by Governor Jan Brewer includes an appropriation to the
Breeders’ Award Fund. As you all know state revenues
have suffered greatly during the past several years. Less
than four years ago Arizona went from a budget surplus
to a general fund deficit that exceeded three billion
dollars - about 30% of the budget.
awards. ATBA Board Member Marvin Fleming and
Yvonne Kunz met with Eileen Klein to provide detail
about the impact of the breeding industry on the Arizona
economy. ATBA staff contacted breeders and supporters
to contact House leadership and other to impress upon
them the need and importance for funding breeder
awards. The HBPA supported our efforts.
All state-funded programs suffered budget cuts and
sweeps and the Breeders’ Award Fund was no exception.
Unlike the majority of breeder awards across the
country, the Arizona awards depend on legislative
general fund appropriation.
The result of our efforts is a $250,000 appropriation for
breeder awards for the fiscal year beginning
July 1. While it is not the amount that was appropriated
in the past, the fact that it was included in the budget is
recognition of the impact of the Thoroughbred breeding
industry to Arizona.
The ATBA focused its efforts on restoring some of
the funding. Early in the year Representative Heather
Carter, a huge supporter, arranged a presentation
involving various aspects of the equine community
at WestWorld. Several legislators, including Senate
President Steve Pierce, House Speaker Andy Tobin and
Governor’s Chief of Staff Eileen Klein attended the
event. ATBA Executive Director Yvonne Kunz made a
presentation on behalf of the breeders.
We followed up with a meeting between ATBA President
Dennis Grenier and the Senate Chief of Staff to
emphasize the importance of funding the awards. Senate
President Pierce is a staunch supporter and committed
to work with us to try to find some money for breeder
Special thanks to President Pierce, Governor’s chief
Klein, Representative Carter and Speaker Tobin for their
support. Dennis Grenier, Marvin Fleming, Yvonne Kunz
and all that contacted legislators on behalf of the ATBA
should be recognized for their outstanding efforts.

Triple AAA Ranch
Triple AAA Ranch has earned Breeder of the Year twenty-four of the thirty years it has been awarded.
Arizona takes extra pride and pleasure when a runner foaled on Arizona soil makes good on the national
scene.
The exploits of Ez Dreamer, Uh Oh Bango, and Ez Effort are all the sweeter, because we can root for the
home team.
Thanks to Triple AAA Ranch, the Arizona Thoroughbred industry has been able to share in the joy and
achievements of Triple AAA Ranch.

2011 Julep Cup
Filippo Santoro
The Blood-Horse Julep Cup is presented each year to a person
for outstanding contributions to the Thoroughbred industry.
This years recipient’s main interest is not to race but to be
among the leading Thoroughbred breeders in Arizona. He is
an avid reader and spends hours researching the bloodlines
of the Thoroughbred. He uses three parameters to select his
breeding stock, pedigree, conformation and racing ability.
His number one factor in breeding is to have a good pool of
genes.
In his quest to produce the best foals in Arizona, he continues
to upgrade his Thoroughbreds. He recently purchased a new
stallion, and he is currently selecting quality broodmares
pushing forward his goals and dreams to produce quality
Arizona-breds
He served as a member of the ATBA board for 11 years.
During his tenure he was instrumental in dividing the
Arizona Breeders Futurity into two divisions. Creating the
opportunity for blacktype for both fillies and colts.
He was most recently re-elected to the AZ HBPA Board.
Because of his overall involvement, dedication to improvement
and the willingness to give of his time and talent to the
Thoroughbred industry the prestigious Blood-Horse Julep
Cup is presented to Dr. Filippo Santoro.

Jockey Akifumi Kato notched his
2,000 career win at Turf Paradise
on April 16th aboard She’s a Hit.
It was a family affair, the 3-yearold filly is owned by Arrowhead

Kaylyn Kato. Kato was born in
Japan and began riding in 1976.
Akifumi Kato, 60, was regular
rider for Eclipse Award winner

Leo Wheatley was born February
22, 1949 in Great Falls, Montana,
and departed this life on March 28th
2012 in Phoenix, Arizona. Leo
Wheatley was an all around good
cowboy and ranch hand, a horse
shoer, trainer, stall man and West

guy to all. He leaves his wife
Linda; daughters Lisa Wheatley
of Bowie, Maryland, Leann

and three granddaughters. Leo
was honored by a service at Turf
Paradise in the Paddock Room
on April 3, 2012. Leo was laid to
rest in Twin Bridges, Montana.
Our deepest sympathy to Linda and

Governor Jan Brewer
Appoints New Racing Director
Governor Jan Brewer named William J. Walsh the new Director of the Arizona Department of Racing. He had
been serving as the Department’s interim Director since the departure of former Director Lonny Powell, who
resigned the post effective December 31, 2011.
Mr. Walsh was appointed by Governor Brewer in March 2012. The Department of Racing regulates the Arizona
pari-mutuel horse and greyhound racing industry; supervises all commercial horse, greyhound and county fair
racing meetings; licenses participants and collects revenues; and enforces laws and rules related to racing and
wagering in the State of Arizona. The Department also regulates and supervises boxing, kickboxing, tough man
and mixed martial arts events in Arizona.
Mr. Walsh has more than four decades of professional experience in the racing industry. He began his career
working as a pari-mutuel clerk in New York. He taught elementary school for several years, and then served
as a Patrol and Placing Judge at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He worked for the Horsemen’s
Benevolent and Protective association (HBPA) in Rockville, Maryland, and in Spokane, Washington, followed
by a stint as Executive Director of the Alabama Horsemen’s Racing Association in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Walsh joined the Department of Racing in 1993, taking on the oversight of simulcasting and off-track wagering in Arizona, as well as rules development. Mr. Walsh has served as the Department’s authorized public
lobbyist and most recently, Chief Horse Steward/Supervisor of Officials and Wagering.
Mr. Walsh completed the Senior Steward Racing Officials Accreditation Program in Lexington, Kentucky, and
hold racing licenses in Alabama, Illinois, New York and Washington.
He earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the State University of NewYork and completed the
Race Track Industry Program at the University of Arizona.
“He brings to the Department a wealth of expertise in the Arizona racing industry,” said Governor Brewer.
“Bill’s stint as Interim Director, coupled with nearly fifty years of professional experience and a breadth of professional accreditation, will be a wonderful asset to the Department and the racing community in Arizona.”

earning position on the also-eligible they will be determined by lot. Any nominee excluded from running as a result of the aforementioned preference
rule shall have the entry fee refunded. Weights: Fillies 117 lbs. Colts/Gelding 122 lbs.
All races will be restricted to 2012 Arizona-bred foals, registered and certified by the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association. To be eligible to start in the Futurities or the Derby foals must be registered and certified by February 1, 2014. The ATBA will deduct ten percent of all

split 55% to the Futurities and 45% to the Derby. (Futurity monies split % by gender). Monies will be divided: 50% to winner, 20% to second, 10% to
third; 5% to fourth; 3% to fifth; 2% to sixth; ( in the futurity 1% to the next six finishers) (in the derby 1% to each of the next six finishers). 4% to be paid
to the nominator of the winner of each race. To remain eligible for the Derby, horses do not have to start in the Futurities, however all sustaining
