PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Another successful season has come and gone. Congratulations to Eagles for their gallant
victory in the Grand Final despite some atrocious weather and also to Morphies who came
from last place on the ladder the previous year.
2010 commenced in March with the running of a pre season 9-a-side competition at Kilburn Oval and sadly this was poorly attended. It was also decided by the Board that a new
direction would be taken in regard to developing female umpires in the League. This initiative was fully supported by
most Clubs and resulted in a number of new females being introduced to the officiating side of our game. This initiative
must remain a high priority if we are genuinely looking at expanding female football in our State.
In April, with assistance from the SANFL, a launch of the 2010 SAWFL Season was held at AAMI Stadium. Members
from each Club were in attendance and we were lucky enough to have the ABC covering it and they gave us some air
time on their sports news.
The League welcomed the new Club in Central District to take our team numbers up to five therefore giving us a bye
each week. Central District must be commended on their attitude and approach to building a new Women‟s Club. In
particular I thank Russel Hall and Pat Watson for their sterling efforts in this regard.
The initial Female Football Academy proved a success as eleven of the Academy girls went on to represent South Australia in the Inaugural U18 National Youth Girls Championships in Melbourne during September. My congratulations to
the U18‟s for their successful Championships and a detailed account is included later in the Annual Report.
The outreach game this year was hosted by the Goolwa Magpies Football Club and most Clubs took the opportunity to
undertake some team bonding for the weekend in this scenic part of South Australia.
The League made a decision that it would run an annual fund raiser for the Representative squads and the Academy.
For something different an auction night was organised at AAMI Stadium with two local bands in attendance. The event
raised just over $2,000 a disappointing amount given the amount of work that was put into the organisation of the night.
In the future, I would hope that more members would recognise the benefit of a night for the development of female
football in SA.
Other fund raising initiatives were introduced such as selling Budgets for the Amateur League Finals and the Australian
Credit Union Lottery. These had a modicum of success and will be pursued for future years. Thank you to all the volunteers that assisted in these ventures.
The Dutschke night once again spoke for itself and it was a credit to the women of the SAWFL. Well done ladies. To
all award winners on the night I offer my sincere congratulations.
Finally thank you to the Executive of the SAWFL for their tireless efforts and the Board of Management for their support
to the Executive and the continual support from the SANFL.

Towards the end of the Season, the initiative was taken to remunerate the Umpires by electronic transfer into

At the time of writing, the League is in a stable financial position to commence the 2011 Football Season.

EAGLES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (EWFC) 2010
Ahhh 2010—it was a very good year! Eagles began the Season by coming in from the cold of borrowed grounds and
halfway homes, into the arms of Edwardstown. Everyone at „Eagletown‟ from President John Shaw and his Committee, to support staff, players and members, have been excited about having us and shown huge respect and pride as a
serious and successful team. We could not have wanted for anything more. Thankyou to the Semaphore Bakehouse
for continuing to supply us for home games and player incentives. A huge thanks to The Lord Melbourne Hotel for their
generosity, hospitality and continuing to support as and we are pleased to announce an extension of our sponsorship
agreement to five years, giving the Club some real financial stability and a friendly meeting place for regular social activities.
We welcomed new recruits in Kylie Bland, Rose Burracchio, Eliza Oates and Lea Fry who are all valued members of
our Club, both on and off the field.
Off Field, EWFC was delighted to be the SA winner of the ADF „Army—Kick for your Club‟ challenge. This online initiative saw the team bonding through friendly competition over who would „kick longest‟ and rewarded us with $5,000 „in
kind‟ support for equipment and club financial obligations. Thanks to Coach Jules Smith for setting up and kicking
every day for the Club.
Our Coach Jules Smith certainly took Eagles to the next playing level this season. Not only were individual players rising to the challenge, but our on field systems have never looked better with trying new methods, really showed how
versatile the Eagles playing group were and what could be achieved., thankyou Jules.
In Round 10 Eagles lost their only game for the season by narrowly going down to Greenacres under lights at Kilburn
however, this loss saw us forge ahead to finish on top of the ladder for the Season. In the last Round, Eagles proudly
took to the field in their bright pink guernseys and socks to play Morphies for a breast cancer awareness and fundraising match. Contributions on the day went to the Breast Cancer Foundation. The Pink guernseys were produced with
generous donations received from Café 540, Andersons Solicitors and Tile Perfection.
The Grand Final saw Eagles take on Morphies at Thebarton Oval in what started out to be a fine sunny day before
turning into an almost torrential downpour however, this did not dampen our spirit. The final siren sounded giving Eagles the victory on the day with Jess Openshaw taking the trophy for Best Player. The most memorable moment came
from Maritza „Mitzy‟ Galic sneaking a snap goal in the final quarter.
Eagles were well rewarded at the Dutschke Medal night, with Cass Hartley finishing Runner Up for the Dutschke
Medal, Fiona Clancey took out, for the third year in a row, Leading Goal Kicker and newcomer Eliza Oates taking out
Rookie of the Year. Maritza „Mitzy‟ Galic was honoured for her contribution to the game and having played over 200
games by being awarded Life Membership. Vice President Sarah „Maz‟ Masiero was also honoured for attaining 150
games.
Being an Eagle has given me proud highs, great mates and eventful weekends. I look forward to getting out to cheer
Eagles on sometime in 2011.

MORPHETTVILLE PARK WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Roo’s) 2010
Wow what a year we have had at Morphettville!
To finish off last year at the bottom of the ladder and to back it up with our first Grand Final appearance since
our Club commenced in 2007, only proved that we have definitely showed some great dedication and
development.
This year saw the introduction of a few new members to our coaching and training personnel. Joining us this
season was Steve Baxter, previous Premiership Coach from Greenacres Women‟s Football Club and new
Trainer, Deb Huddleston, mother to one of our players. This combined with the ongoing assistance from
inaugural Coach Brian „Higgo‟ Higgins, held us in good stead for 2010. With the introduction of a Committee
run by and for the players we were better organised and were able to have a more professional approach to
the running of our Women‟s team.
Season 2010 introduced new, young and an enthusiastic group of fresh faces within the playing group which
was brought about by the emergence of the Female Football Academy within SAWFL. It was definitely the
strongest playing group since our commencement at Morphies.
Pre season training kicked off early in February allowing us to spend a good deal of time at both the beach
and on the oval. Through all our hard work and great team spirit, we were able to earn our spot in the Grand
Final. Coming up against the Eagles, we knew it was going to be a tough game however, we were thrilled
that we were finally there! The weather that day was not very kind to us, probably the wettest game all year,
and unfortunately we were unable to come away with the goods and the better team won on the day.
Our determination to bring the cup to the home of the Roo‟s in 2011 has never been stronger.
Most of all we wouldn‟t be where we are today without the support of our fantastic Club! Since taking us on
in 2007, we‟ve been in a great spot. The support and involvement from the Club is fantastic; A huge thank
you to the Morphettville Park Football club and of course the South Australian Women‟s Football League for
allowing women to get out and become involved in the great game of footy.
Bring on 2011!!

GREENACRES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Dragons) 2010
The main focus of the Greenacres Women‟s Football Club (GWFC) for Season 2010 was to win back to back
premierships and to become more consistent both on and off the field.
Off Field
The GWFC runs in unison with the Greenacres Football Club and with the assistance of John Leicester who
attends all of their committee meetings. I believe that we have again strengthened the relationship between
the boys and girls involved with Greenacres. This includes support at games and fundraising functions, and
as a group, we believe that this can always be improved upon and will be a core strategy for the 2010/2011
GWFC Committee.
A new committee member, Deb Walker, took on the role of Treasurer and this proved to be her niche, running a well managed financial side of the Club. Deb organised team meals after training on every last
Wednesday of the month, which I know all the players enjoyed. Many thanks Deb for your time and efforts.
Our Team Manager, John Leicester, is an invaluable source to our Club, as previously mentioned, he is our
link between the boys and the girls. John has the ability to keep the Club on track when hurdles arise. His
life and football experience is second to none and we would not function as we do without his guidance and
advice. For this, many thanks from myself as President and the whole Club.
The remainder of the Committee was made up of players which had some success however, it seems to be a
downfall of most small organisations like ours in that, people are wearing too many hats and not able to give
100% to their preferred involvement activity. Our focus for 2010/2011 is to recruit people to run our Club who
are not players.
On Field
A premiership in 2009 was always going to be hard to top and we set out to be a more consistent side and
really get our finals campaign sup up by a solid winning season. The exit of Head Coach Steve Baxter was
always going to be hard to fill and history tells us that he took Morphies from bottom to second. Our new
Head Coach and recently retired player, Narelle Smith took on the role and has introduced some new training
regimes, including trying to build a better understanding of the game. Success is hard to measure, as being
beaten in the semi final by two points was disappointing and all involved fell like we left it all out on the park.
As good teams do, we will go back to the drawing board and rebuild towards a more organised and
structured approach both on and off the field and the Dragons will again be a force in Season 2011.

PORT ADELAIDE WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Magpies) 2010
Football has its ups and downs. Season 2010 was both! A long pre season did take its toll on the playing group and a
run of injuries meant that the team never really settled into positions. A highlight of the year was the trip to Goolwa.
We are attempting to form a long term partnership with the Goolwa/Port Elliot Magpies which will benefit both Clubs.
On field the team experienced little success winning games, with the exception of an exciting win against the 2009 Premiers, Greenacres. Other wins came against the new team to the competition, Central District. Some may say success is measured by how many Premierships you win, while this may be true, another measure of success can be how
greatly the team or club develops during a season.
As a young side, the PAWFC is starting to play a brand of football that is exciting to watch. The skilful game that is
being developed and implemented by the Magpies, we believe, will earn a Premiership for our club in the very near
future.
Off field our club is very stable and this year we secured three team sponsors. The support of sponsors has enabled
us to conduct recovery sessions at the Adelaide Football Club and the financial support has allowed us to purchase
new equipment and club uniforms for the players and volunteers.
Thank you to our Major Sponsors: British Hotel, McDonalds—West Lakes and Croydon and Adelaide
Fitness Solutions.
Again this year we have seen new players debut for the club and we continue to focus on player pathways through our
association with the local junior leagues. We would like to acknowledge our three Coaches, Peter Cates, Frank Leonard, Tim Stewart and the game day support of Mike Coburn, Hats, Stacey Walton and Brad Enthoven, as well as our
Committee for their contribution to the club.
In our third year with our host club at Portland, we have grown our relationship and a strong bond between the two
clubs. The Portland Masters team shares the oval with us on training nights and are a great support to our team.
The issue of public profile is always difficult for our sport and this year we secured Gavin Wanganeen as our No 1 ticket
holder which was great for the club and enabled us to get articles in both the Adelaide and Melbourne Newspapers,
thanks Gavin.
I would like also to congratulate the SAWFL on the success of the U18 State Team. We had seven players
and a Coach from PAWFC represent the State, of which two players were selected in the All Australian Team, well
done.
Looking forward to a rest and then bring on 2011. Go the Magpies!!

CENTRAL DISTRICT WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB (Bulldogs) 2010
The Central District Women‟s Football Club (CDWFC) was formed due to the overwhelming support of the
Junior girls‟ competition in the Central District Junior Football League in 2009.
The season commenced with 12 women turning out for training on the first night, which made the Coaching
staff very pleased as they thought this was a good indication that CDWFC would get the numbers. The numbers kept increasing every week and by the end of the season we had 35 registered players.
Matt Levett was elected Assistant Coach and helped me out on many occasions. Pam Carroll was our
trainer and she looked after the girls very well during the season on and off the field.
Emma Gibson was appointed the Inaugural Captain. The team tried very hard throughout the season and
while they did not win a game, they enjoyed themselves and were not deterred from coming back week in
and week out to only improve themselves, this they did.
Great excitement came when our first goal was kicked by Nicole Maher against Port Adelaide. It was also
pleasing to see the other Clubs applaud this great effort by the team which enabled Nicole to kick the goal.
The Club was very pleased when Brittany Perry won the trophy for the best Under 18 player and Player‟s
Player which was presented at the Dutschke Medal Night held at AAMI Stadium.
We finished our season with a presentation dinner at our Club Rooms at Argana Park which was attended by
80 people. Brittany was also acknowledged as the best player for the season and a trophy was also presented to our leading goal kicker [one] Nicole Maher.
The Club is looking forward to the Season 2011 and is again hopeful of increasing its numbers.

Umpire’s Coordinator Report—Season 2010
Season 2010 saw the SAWFL move in a different direction with umpiring. Encouraged by the Board of
Management there was a concerted effort to introduce and develop more female umpires for the League.
The Board of Management would like to pass its thanks onto Barry Lewis for his many years of coordinating
umpires for the League and also to Terry Crispin, one of the League‟s most regular field umpires.
As a cost saving and development initiative, the League allocated duty goal umpires from the bye team and
this enabled a number of girls to try their hand at waving the flags. We were also able to gain the services of
Brian Gillman as the Umpires Development/ Mentor coach and I commend him on the work he did with the
young aspiring field umpires.
Central District Junior League supplied all umpire appointments at their home games and Great Southern
League provided umpires for our round in Goolwa. In the remaining fifteen home and away rounds, some
fifteen different Field Umpires were used, of these eight were female. In addition, thirteen different Boundary
Umpires were used, seven of whom were female.
Despite the criticisms from the “old & bold”, the League must continue down this path. We are a fledging
League, in the midst of a real re-growth period, and if we do not develop our on field officials we will remain
reliant on other Leagues to provide this support and out of self interest they will not give us first priority.
As female football continues to expand across South Australia, the SAWFL must lead the way in encouraging
young ladies to become role models for our sport not only as players but as officials as well.
PETER CATES

South Australian U18 Youth Girls Football Team
(AFL Inaugural National U18 Youth Girls Football Championships,
Melbourne, September 2010)
The Inaugural AFL National U18 Youth Girls Football Championships were held from
September 7th—11th at Craigieburn Oval, the home of the Coburg Tigers (VFL) and
the Calder Cannons (TAC Cup)
Heading to the Championships, we had no idea of what the competition would be like,
with the exception of Victoria who we knew would be hard to beat. Within the first five
minutes of game one against QLD (who were ranked second coming into the Championships), we knew we were going
to be very competitive all week. The outstanding run from the back lines, midfield clearances and pressure on the opposition was a real highlight of the SA Team who controlled the majority of the match.
The match was tied for the final 13 minutes and as the clock ticked past the 15 minute mark of the final term, it became
a „golden score‟ with the first team to register a score to be victorious. Co-captain of SA, Britt Perry kicked the winning
behind two and a half minutes into extra time to give SA a memorable start to the Championships.
Match two had us lined up against AFL Victoria Development, and although not the dominant Victorian team, they were
tipped to do well at the Championships. The girls were feeling more pressure after winning on day one as they were
keen to stay undefeated. The win was set up with a terrific first half in which we kicked four goals to non in windy conditions. It was a terrific team effort by the girls in which there were six individual goal kickers.
With the rest day on Thursday, we all enjoyed being undefeated and turned our attention to beating
NSW/ACT in our final minor round match. A light training Thursday morning, after many had attended a recovery session, had the team feeling fresh for Friday‟s match.
In terrible conditions at Craigieburn, we took to the field determined to have another win. The NSW/ACT team had
turned their form around after losing their first two matches and were playing hard, aggressive
football. To our credit, we stood up to the physical presence they delivered and wore them down by getting up again
and from heavy hits. As the weather really hit the oval with a heavy downpour and a wind that was tearing tin sheets
off the newly built clubrooms, we had a slight buffer, one that we were able to defend to enjoy a very hard fought win.
Although remaining undefeated throughout the minor rounds, we were „gutted‟ to find ourselves in the play off for third
and fourth against QLD. We had outplayed QLD on Monday morning and had a strong belief that we could win again,
although missing two All Australians and starting with only two players on the interchange. For three quarters the
game was tight and our skills, pressure and run were eminent. But QLD were playing their best football of the Championships and managed to wear our tired bodies down. During the last quarter, QLD ran away with the match as we
battled against our weary bodies and fatigue. There was a moment where although extremely disappointed, we realised just how much we had achieved and overcome in such a short time. Against the odds, we were able to remain
undefeated in the minor rounds and were unlucky not to be playing in the Grand Final. We played an exceptional
brand of football that excited all States and had six players selected in the All Australian Team, the most of any State.
Considering where we came from at the start of this year, with no U18 Youth Girls competition is SA, pulling together a
team with minimal trainings, having quality players having to pull out due to year 12 commitments and being tipped to
play off for fifth or sixth, it has been a remarkable effort by the girls of the SA U18 Youth Girls Football Team.
With 14 of the 23 players eligible for the 2012 Nationals and an U18 competition in the pipeline for 2011, SA Youth
Girls Football is alive.

2010 GRAND FINAL
“EAGLE TIME”
Eagles Premiers
The Eagles had been focused and preparing for this game all season and were determined to bring the cup
Back home after being defeated by Greenacres in 2009.
Playing at Thebarton Oval suited the Eagle‟s running game however, they knew the much improved
Morphies girls would put up a fight and the weather conditions wouldn‟t be perfect.
After an even first quarter, it was the Eagles who took control and were tireless in their desire to win the ball
and pushed through the greasy conditions to set up numerous scoring attacks up forward.
There were no passengers in the Eagles line up with all 22 players doing their part on the field to ensure a
deserving victory.
At the final siren it was the Eagles girls who shone through to win the 2010 Premiership 8.7.(55 to 2.1. (13).
Jess Openshaw, Eagles, was awarded the trophy for the best player of the Grand Final.
Congratulations Eagles
