AMHE-NJ: 2014, STATE OF THE CHAPTER’S ADDRESS
By Dr Hervé Boucard, AMHE-NJ Chapter President
Welcome to our annual Fundraising Gala. It’s delightful to see so many beautiful and
radiant faces and so much elegance to support the Association des Médecins Haitiens
a l’Etranger AMHE! On behalf of the entire committee I want to welcome you all to
the Night of Rumble.
This year, the gala committee picked the theme ‘Rumble’ to express our internal
feeling. A rumble is a deep and loud cry of Triumph, a cry of Celebration. We feel
entitled to entertain this feeling because our organization, the Association of Haitian
Physicians living Abroad is alive and strong. AMHE was founded in 1972 and counts several branches in different
states called chapters. The Association is 42 years old! The New Jersey Chapter was created in 1988 and thus far, we
remain a strong and dynamic chapter.
We have been supporting a school of 500 children from 1st grade to 12th in a slum of Port-au-Prince; and this year
marks the 14th anniversary of this uninterrupted commitment. Rest assured that your financial support to our
association is used for a good cause. Without you, a mind could be wasted, a young hand could carry a weapon instead
of a book. Together we do make a difference.
We organize two well attended physician conferences yearly which are open to all health care professionals in the
months of April and October. We promote an annual New Year Celebration and this year we welcome an illustrious
guest Mr. Dany Laferrière on a red carpet; he is the new Immortal of l’Académie Française. Born and raised in Haïti,
he became the first North American elected to maintain the modernity of French language.
For the coming year, 2015, AMHE-NJ is proud to have been selected as the organizer of the Yearly Scientific
Convention that will be held at a Caribbean island and we promise that this will be a memorable week for the
organization.
At a time when the world is changing, global warming weather patterns threaten to annihilate the weak economies,
poverty eradication seems more and more unreachable. When pessimism almost feels like the norm, AMHE NJ is
proud to keep the hope alive for 500 children in a poor area. By allowing them to be educated, we create a light at the
end of their tunnel.
We thank you for your support. But we have a lot more to do; please keep supporting us.
For now please enjoy an exciting evening prepared with you in mind.

MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE PRESIDENT
Greetings to all AMHE members and friends. It is a privilege to welcome you to the
annual fund-raising gala of the NJ chapter of l’Association des Médecins Haïtiens à
l’Etranger (AMHE). I join you, keenly aware that as the president of the Central
Executive Committee, I have to report on the foundation and the vision of our
organization.
I became a member of the AMHE while I was still an orthopedic resident at Howard
University and I never regretted it. Many of us grew up under the leadership of Dr Raoul
Pierre-Louis; he was instrumental in my return to the mother land after many years of
teaching in Montreal, Canada. The memories of my experience at the State University of
Haiti will be cherished for the remainder of my life.
There is a world of disparity among us but our unbreakable bonds allow us to reach our common goals. We want
to envision a horizon where we all are able to meet our expectations.
I remember the late 1960s and the 1970s well and I call that period, the dogmatic years of Haitian medicine where
our elders dictated the path to follow. I remember Drs Lévèque, Miot, Paultre, Bontemps, Fils-Aimé, Westerband,
Médard, Parisien, Bartholy, Mondestin, Boyer and many others who benefited from different trainings and
fellowships in the United States and in Europe. They all returned to Haiti to share their knowledge. They worked
hard in different parts of the land, then settled for the State University Hospital. They became the pioneers in their
own specialties. In this way, I witnessed the creation of the Orthopedic and Traumatology department.
The 1980s were the years of a flamboyant medicine when a younger generation of newly trained physicians
would challenge and compete with the elders. We enjoyed the return to the land of Drs. Léon, Bernardin,
Chandler, Guy Clermont bringing to us the most recent “bêtes” in the world of medicine after completing
residencies and fellowships abroad. This period stimulated many of us and we finally realized that the art of
medicine could be mastered. We wanted to be successful like them. Therefore, we embarked into different
residencies and prepared for standardized examinations allowing us to integrate the systems in the US, Canada,
Europe or the Latin America.
Our living quarters were on the site of the State University Hospital and our social life was intertwined with the
medical activities on the campus. We socialized and played different sports together. The Alma Mater was our
focus and, in the same spirit, in 1972, at Harlem hospital, the AMHE became an entity. Many Haitian physicians
assembled around Dr Lionel Lainé to create AMHE. We can state proudly that like the National Medical
Association (NMA), AMHE is considered the oldest ethnic medical association in the USA.
The 1980s have seen an explosion of medical schools in Haiti: Notre Dame, Quisqueya, Lumière, Aristide
Foundation and others. More physicians were also graduating from other medical schools in Cuba, Santo
Domingo, Southern and Northern America, Europe and practicing around the world in different fields.
The1990s witnessed a generation born in the US and many enrolled in American or Caribbean medical schools.
This is our challenge at the AMHE: any MD, DO, DMD, NP, PA, RN, podiatrist, chiropractor, technician or any
other healthcare professionals of Haitian descent, who meets under the AMHE banner needs to be fully integrated
into the system. Every one needs to feel at home in participating in our conventions, meetings or missions around
the world. We may be from different generations, different medical systems and different backgrounds, but we
want to always to be remembered as an association which stands harmoniously united.

Night of Rumble
A RUMBLE, A CRY OF TRIUMPH
illiteracy rate is more than 70%. In some
countries, the quandary is compounded by
customs and beliefs that go counter the very
notion of even trying to find a solution. One
illustration would be Afghanistan where
religious interpretation of the Koran forbids the
education of females. While the illiteracy rate is
72% in this republic of central Asia, it is much
worse among women (88%) than it is among
men (56%). It is obvious that in these societies,
with a super majority of intellectually blind, all
hope for national progress is reduced to a flicker.
by Odler Robert Jeanlouie, MD
The numbers
are staggering,
16% of the
world
population has
never learnt
how to read or
write, that
makes 1.2
billion
Earthlings who do not know how to read and
write; that is 1.2 billion who cannot read this
text, or an email, or a street sign, or a super
market receipt. In the golden era of
communication, when the world is becoming
more and more a village, the inability to
communicate at the most basic level, is akin to a
major disability. For the victim, it is a tunnel
with no light at the end.
More than the rate of illiteracy, societal
construct is the issue to be addressed. In that
context, a rate of 40% is not any more cheerful
than 70% unless, it reflects improving statistics.
In Haiti, Benin, Bhutan, Pakistan, roughly 50%
of the population is unable to read and write.
More than the absolute number, the trend is to
be looked at. It seems that in the Caribbean
republic, the trend is positive. Twenty years, it
was listed at more than 70%. Through a
combination of government interventions and
privately-funded initiatives, more and more
children, men and women, can read a street sign
and authenticate a check at the central bank.
The issue grows more complex when it is
examined under the magnifying lens of
inequality between nations. In Canada the
illiteracy rate is 0%, in Russia 0.3%, in the
United Kingdom 1%. These measures were
achieved through government programs and
institutions in countries that can afford
dedicating a significant share of their GDP to
solve the problem. But may we not think that
only larger or richer countries can achieve a
positive result. In Cuba, the illiteracy rate is
0.2%, in the Philippines 3.5%, in Bolivia 8.8%
(reduced from 40% in the last few years).
Therefore, it is clear that poor countries and rich
countries can, with planning and financing,
policies or politics, reach a satisfactory solution
to eradicate the scourge.
In this grand konbit of betterment, the New
Jersey Chapter of the Association of Haitian
Physicians Abroad (AMHE-NJ) has been
helping. It has been fourteen years since the
invoices of Les Moissoneurs de La Saline
School have been paid by the AMHE-NJ.
Fourteen years, a full scholarly cycle, K-14.
AMHE-NJ has just graduated its first class.
It is time for a rumble, time for a cry of
triumph…

THE RUMBLE IN MY CLASSROOM
By Judith A. Gaston
As an educator, I start getting ready for my students early in
the morning. This preparation takes place miles away from my
school building. This all begins at the gym at about 5:00 AM. There,
within the walls of a fitness center, I garner the energy, the patience,
the inspiration and the endurance needed for forty extremely active
and curious students.
My routine involves spin classes, weight lifting, boxing,
jogging and a variety of other exercises that I view as an absolute necessity in my line of work. I am
convinced that this conditioning manifests in the classroom in innumerable ways as I look at the many
hats I wear in the course of one day. From 8:25 AM to 3:05 PM, I am an instructor who mediates
conflicts when they erupt unexpectedly in my classroom, entertains with a sense of humor so my students
stay focused and interested, nurtures with encouraging and gentle words of praise, and disciplines while
heightening their sense of self worth and preserving their dignity. No matter what is going on in my
student’s personal lives or how disruptive and disengaged they may be initially, my goals remain the
same. I have to be consistent in establishing a culture of respect, instill a love of learning and foster work
ethics that will help them obtain a level of success.
Our lessons no longer follow the traditional model of the teacher being the “Sage on the Stage.”
Modern pedagogy advocates more of a model described as the “Guide on the Side.” To achieve this goal,
lessons are designed to have more interaction within groups collaborating as they solve problems and
apply their critical thinking skills. The more strategically planned and creative the lesson, the more
students will stay cognitively involved. Those of us honest about our profession know that we are these
days, competing with all types of tech gadgets readily available to our pupils. Therefore, we put our best
professional foot forward to sustain our pupil’s attention and deliver in a way that is both powerful and
memorable.
After twenty five years, I still enjoy being in the classroom and take pride in seeing the
transformation that takes place incrementally from September to June. My children slowly but surely
realized the significance of an education. So, as I near the end and reflect on the 2013/2014 school year, I
will say that their attendance was very good, participation in the classroom improved tremendously,
homework was overall completed to satisfaction and behavior and adherence to classroom rules were
above average in rating.
In many ways, my experiences at the gym parallel those in the classroom; alot of effort is being
invested to overcome challenges and see growth that can be quantified and measured. I take the lessons
from one arena and bring them to the classroom setting. Who knows, maybe one day I will run a
marathon and live to tell “my kids” all about it.

Night of Rumble
THE NIGHT OF RUMBLE CALLS YOU TO DO MORE
By Vasthy Jean-Louis, DPM
Imagine being a destitute parent living
on a small Caribbean island. Imagine
residing in an area so isolated that health
care is miles away. Imagine having a
child sick with an unrelenting fever that
cannot be treated since there is no
healthcare in your immediate vicinity.
As a physician, there are times when I
grapple with the harsh realities that exist
beyond the boundaries of my own
comfort. I find it hard to believe that
there are those who never had and will
never benefit from a healthcare system.
Let us take a leap this instant... We know
this will not always be convenient. We
know this may cause some discomfort
but such is the nature of this pledge.
Night of rumble signifies that we look
from now on beyond our own personal
needs and acknowledge the needs of
others.
If I or any of my patients were to need
immediate medical care, an ambulance
would be at our disposal and care would
be administered immediately.
Subsequently, we would be brought to a
hospital. We could not imagine this any
differently since this is what we know to
be a daily reality. These services have
become our entitlements and we take
them for granted. It’s hard to imagine
life without them. Yet, to a great number
of people healthcare is a just a dream.
As we acknowledge altruism and act
appropriately, we can offer enough hope
to be passed on from one generation to
another.
If it is not us, then who?
If it is not today, then when?
Night of Rumble is a reminder of this
gross inequity. It is a time for us to
collectively examine our own lives and
the privileges we have been granted.
Tonight, we must take the time to be
receptive to the outcry of the less
fortunate. Let us take this opportunity
and renew our commitment to them.

Night of Rumble
An interview with Barbara Lissade
Interviewer: You have in the past volunteered your remarkable gift to advance AMHE’s humanitarian cause, tell us
a bit more about your history with AMHE, NJ.
Barbara Lissade: It was a simple decision I made some years ago when I found out about AMHE’s mission and
their particular goal of helping children in la Saline. I hesitated at first since the organization was made up of
physicians and nurses. I attended an event and after hearing of the abject poverty that these poor children were
subjected to, I decided to become part of the organization and offer my help in any way possible.
As the recipient of this year’s Community Award, could you tell us what has influenced your exquisite taste in
decoration?
What influenced me at an early age was my family’s appreciation for beautiful objects and their devotion to
presenting everything in an appropriate and aesthetically pleasing way. Dinner was ceremonial in my home; the
meals were presented in such an enjoyable and grandiose fashion. I think part of this “gift” is attributable to my
upbringing and to some extent part of it may be innate. Some years ago my dad suggested that I get into this
business and I did. My family and I have turned this passion into a blossoming entrepreneurship. Decorating
requires an enormous amount of time and attention to details is paramount yet, I would not have it any other
way. My dad would be proud of us.
Walk us through the events that lead you here …
In my early stages, I took a lot of art history classes. This interest evolved into a fascination with the exhibits at
the museums. I practically lived at the Metropolitan Museum and started travelling to different European
countries. Being overseas and being exposed to the arts enhanced my artistic skills. I should add that the other
important aspect of this is emotional. To me, a well decorated room and an elegantly presented dinner says
clearly to the receiver, “I cherish you and I think you deserve the best.” Every year I see AMHE’s guests as Kings
and Queens and treat them as such. I appreciate their presence and demonstrate this clearly.
What other passion(s) fuel your life?
Well, aside from the decorating, I am a counselor to children starting from the age of 6 to adults. My clients have
psychiatric issues that need to be addressed. I care deeply for the children I work with. Some of the teenagers
have grown attached to me and feel comfortable enough to share secrets with me they would not share with
their family members. There is a thread that runs through both my professional duties and those assigned to me
by AMHE. It is a humanitarian thread that obligates me to serve my fellow human beings.
Thank you Barbara for giving us a glimpse into your world.

Manhattan Samba: Fundraising Gala Performer
Manhattan Samba is New York’s longest-running authentic Brazilian samba drum ensemble. The band has been
delivering true Carioca swing from Rio de Janeiro to New York since 1990.
Its beat is described as irresistible and energetic.
Manhattan Samba’s rhythm dominates the dance
floors all around New York City. The allpercussion ensemble is a traditional Brazilian
bateria; it is based on the drum groups that
accompany the yearly carnival parades in Rio de
Janeiro.
Manhattan Samba is directed by Ivo Araujo, a
master percussionist who has performed with
leading samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. The
ensemble is a truly international group with
members from Brazil, Central and South America,
Europe, Japan and the U.S.; all of them trained by
Ivo Araujo in his weekly samba percussion
classes.
Their professional Show Group comprises an exceptional roster of samba drummers and dancers, singers, guitarists,
players of the Cavaquinho, the characteristic small Brazilian guitar, acrobatic performers of Capoeira, an afro-Brazilian
martial art-dance, horn players, and whatever other type of performer may be required. The heart of Samba New York’s
Show Group is its Bateria Muita Energia! (high energy drum section.)

Night of Rumble
Night
NIGHT Of....!
OF…..!
Saturday,
6,8:00
2015
Saturday,
June June
9, 2012,
p.m.
Program: TBA.
Contribution: $150
Just be there!
List of reasons that will no longer be accepted as excuses for “inability to attend”:
1. I don’t have money.
You have 52 weeks to save $3 a week order to contribute to a good cause and have fun
2. I don’t have a baby sitter.
Oops, then you need to save an additional $2 a week to hire one for the night of 6/6/15.
3. I am working that night.
Please, on your very next day at work, request the night of 6/6/15 off.
4. It is my birthday/my wedding.
Bring your birthday or wedding party to the function. We have everything you need.
5. It is my sister’s birthday/my best friend’s wedding.
See reply to #4.
6. I will be out of the country.
Why would you choose to be “out of the country” over being “out of this world”?
7. I don’t party any longer.
Just come and enjoy the dinner show. Leave the dance party to all others.
8. I am tired.
A good gala is what you need. C’est bon pour le moral (It’s good for the mood).
9. My brother is traveling to Europe the day after the gala.
Are you kidding me?
10. I am about to deliver
If what you deliver is a baby, we do that too.
11. I am in the intensive care unit, intubated, ventilated, and sedated.
That is a tough one. Can you just buy a ticket for 2015, and make plan to attend in 2016?
