HISTORY
A River Community From the Beginning: A History of Jenks
L
ocated on the west banks of the Arkansas River in
southern Tulsa County, the City of Jenks was officially
platted on July 15, 1905. Prior to that, the Townsite of Jenks
Indian Territory was a small community site established by a
cooperative agreement between the Midland Valley Railroad
and the Midland Valley Townsite Company.
Early settlers to Jenks included small businessmen, farmers
and ranchers, including the Perryman family. The Perryman
Ranch was established before Oklahoma statehood and is a

house and property (which contains the original barn,well,
outbuildings and post office) are available for touring. The
ranch’s pavilion is available to rent for special events. Call

By 1906, Jenks experienced a major surge in growth when
oil was discovered in the nearby fields of Glenpool. With
the oil came expensive oil tank farms which increased area
property values and produced revenue for the Jenks Public
Schools System.
There are various stories as to the origin of the town’s
allotment of Mose Perryman, son of Tulsa’s first family,
George and Rachel Perryman who helped name Tulsa.
Tulsa’s first post office which is now located in the ranch
house was run by George Perryman’s brother who was
the first postmaster. Mail was delivered to Jenks by Pony
Express.
The ranch is still a working ranch and is owned by
Monetta Trepp, NIMI Founder and CEO. The National
Indian Monument and Institute’s mission is to honor,
preserve, sustain and
celebrate Native American culture. The 100 year old ranch
name. The one believed to be true is that the town was
named after a Philadelphia railroad director who built the
Midland Valley Railroad.
Today, Jenks is the one of the fastest growing cities in
Oklahoma. With a current population of 16,500 Jenks is
welcoming new residents and businesses daily. This growth
is evident in every area of our community, from school site
expansions to new roads, to exciting new residential and
commercial developments.

Serving Businesses and the Community
T
he Jenks Chamber of Commerce represents over one
hundred years of creating a strong local economy,
promoting the community, providing networking
opportunities and business contacts and representing business
interests to government.
A major goal of the Chamber is to foster and promote
economic growth that will attract new residents and new
businesses to the Jenks area. The Chamber also serves as
a business advocate and strives to provide leadership to the
Jenks community, and it is working. Jenks is cited again and
again as one of the best places to live and work – not only in
Oklahoma but across the country.
Partnering with other organizations in the surrounding
communities, the Chamber regularly responds to regional
challenges, including issues under consideration by city,
county, state and national officials. The Jenks Chamber of
Commerce works closely with these entities to help ensure a
climate of regulatory fairness and entrepreneurial opportunity,
as well as representing the interests of Jenks.
Involvement in Chamber activities is strongly encouraged by
those who participate annually. In addition to the Chamber’s
many events, there are various committees available for
member participation. Chamber staff is happy to help
identify the activities and programs most suited to a person’s
individual needs. Of course, even without direct involvement
in activities, Chamber membership investments are at work
each day, promoting your business.
Chamber Membership Benefits
The benefits and rewards of being a Jenks Chamber of
Commerce member fall into five primary categories:
Business Tools – The Chamber offers members
opportunities to promote their business with an online
membership directory, weekly e-newsletter, ribbon cuttings
and groundbreakings, event and publication sponsorships,
educational workshops and seminars, networking through
monthly luncheons and other mixers. The Chamber also
offers Chamber Choice Insurance benefits partnering with Blue
Cross/Blue Shield.
Representing Business Interests to Government – The
Chamber ready to assist businesses with questions about the
community, and to provide assistance that will help businesses
succeed. Through a partnership with the City of Jenks,
the Chamber provides support to companies locating and
expanding in Jenks. The Chamber advocates on behalf of the
interests of business before local governments, at the state level
in Oklahoma City and nationally in Washington D.C. For
many members, the Chamber is the only advocate and source
of information regarding legislative activity at municipal, state
and federal levels.
Leadership Development – Leadership Jenks, which has
graduated 24 classes, educates local business owners and
residents about Jenks, as well as local opportunities for
leadership in the Jenks community. The Leadership Jenks
Alumni program keeps graduates plugged in.
Community Promotion – Includes programs and events
which promote both business and community such as the
annual City-Wide Garage Sale, Art on Main and Holiday
Open House.
Economic Vitality – Economic vitality sustains the quality
of life enjoyed in Jenks. The Chamber assists with everything
from small business advice, available commercial property
and demographic information. The Chamber also helps to
implement programs to retain and attract new businesses.

The Oklahoma Aquarium is the state’s must see attraction,
with more than 200 exhibits, featuring thousands of animals
from the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers and streams. The
Aquarium has received top honors from the Governor’s
Conference on Tourism, being named Outstanding Attraction
twice since opening in 2003. The Aquarium also hosted
Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin’s pre-Inaugural Ball in 2011.
The largest tank is the Siegfried Families Shark Adventure
with nearly 500,000 gallons of water and a walk-through
tunnel and dome. The unique underwater experience allows
visitors to see the largest bull sharks in captivity along with
lemon, sand tiger and nurse sharks swimming all around and
overhead.

In 1984, Jenks Community Education
was launched. It is believed to have
begun with a parenting class. Today, two
or three times a year Jenks Community
Education mails their class schedule
to over 60,000 families located in the
Jenks School District. Three hundred
classes are held annually, with more than
10,000 attending Community Education
programs. Two hundred fifty full- and
part-time instructors and employees are
on staff, teaching anything from Russian
to knitting and email to photography.

ixby Public Schools recognizes the value and importance of a quality education

Bixby Public Schools is the 29th largest school district in the state of Oklahoma and
competes at the 6A level. Many outstanding programs and activities normally found in

TotalCare emergency medical services is
available to Jenks with Emergency Medical
Services Authority (EMSA). TotalCare is
designed to cover all out-of-pocket expenses
associated with ambulance service and can
be used anywhere in EMSA’s coverage area.
As Oklahoma’s largest ambulance service,
EMSA provides pre-hospital emergency care
for more than 1.1 million residents in the
central and northeastern parts of the state.
The new, state-of-the-art Utica Park
Clinic – Jenks, features 22,000 square feet of
medical office space. It offers amenities such
as convenient parking; an expanded upscale
clinical setting, children’s play area, x-ray,
laboratory, Dexascan and mammography
services; and six physician offices on several
floors.
The Tulsa metro area offers many
advanced and state-of-the art hospitals,
several of which are located within a five

GOVERNMENT
Jenks’ Public Servants
T
he City of Jenks operates
under the council-manager
form of government.
The city council is composed
of seven citizens, elected by the
populace of Jenks to serve in
six wards and one at-large seat.
The mayor, who serves as chair
of the body, is elected from the
council by the councilors. The
vice-mayor, too, is selected in this
manner.
The current mayor is Vic
Vreeland and the current vicemayor is Greg Bowman.
The council is charged
with establishing city policy,
passing local ordinances, voting
appropriations and developing
the vision for Jenks. The council
holds public meetings the first and
third Mondays of each month at
city hall at 7 p.m.

The city manager is hired by
the city council to act as chief
executive officer of the city.
Current City Manager Mike
Tinker has previously served
Jenks as a city councilor
and mayor. He oversees all
department heads and administers
council-approved policies.

Review Committee and Board of

enks Fire and Rescue is a highly-trained all hazards
response agency comprised of paid and volunteer
staff.
Operating from two fire stations, we serve this thriving
and dynamic community by providing EMS, Rescue,
Extrication, Fire Suppression and Hazardous Materials
emergency response.
We strive to be an effective, efficient organization
offering the highest level of customer service to our
citizens, visitors, and businesses. Through partnerships
with the Jenks Police Department (trained as first
responders)and EMSA, we are able to provide a quick
response to any medical emergency and offer paramedic
level transport when needed.
Collaborating and sharing resources with neighboring
communities assists us in providing a high level of
comprehensive services. Our efficient plan review and
code enforcement process enhances our fire and life safety
objectives without delaying community development.
In addition, we offer fire prevention and educational
programs to schools and community organizations.
Potential citizens, visitors, businesses, and industry
will find a great group of firefighters ready to serve this
community.

he Jenks Police Department is a full-service,
professional law enforcement agency that includes
patrol, investigations and records divisions in addition to
a jail facility and communications center.
The Department consistently strives to create, cultivate
and strengthen relationships and partnerships within the
community in order to proactively and successfully reduce
and detour crime while providing the highest level of
customer service and security to our merchants, citizens
and guests.
The Department truly believes in “service with
integrity,” working together to provide for a safer
community, and ultimately improving upon quality of life
issues in the community for all citizens.
PARKS & RECREATION
Fun in the Sun in Jenks
Q
uality of life is what Jenks is all about.
Whether it’s golfing, bicycling, running,
shopping, listening to a band on the river or cheering
on the home team at a high school game, Jenks has it
all.
Jenks residents enjoy 13 area parks:
Park West, located at W. Main & KOA Streets, is a
sports complex featuring 16 baseball fields, four girls’
softball fields and a little league football field.
Children enjoy the spray park at Central Park, 100
N. Elm St.
Veterans Park, east of Elm St. on Veterans Drive,
began development in 2005. The Jenks Veterans
Memorial is a tribute to those who have served in the
armed forces. The park offers residents and visitors
19 acres, showcasing large picnic pavilions for family
outings and community events, a new stateof-the-art children’s playground, complete
with a swing park and restrooms. In 2007,
park benches and charcoal grills were
added. In 2008-2009, a stocked casting
pond with fishing docks, a fountain and
walking trails were added.
For the golf enthusiast, South Lakes
Golf Course (southlakesgolf.com), located
W. Main St. and Elwood Ave., is a Tulsa
County-owned public 18-hole course,
providing a great place to unwind and
perfect a swing. The course includes a
driving range, pro shop and snack bar/
restaurant.
Walking trails can be found in many of
the neighborhoods across Jenks. In addition,
the Tulsa River Parks trail system links to
the Jenks Pedestrian Bridge. The Jenks Trails
offer easy access for bicyclists, walkers and
joggers. Park West also features a nature
trail.
The South County Recreation Center
(www.parks.tulsacounty.org), located 135th
St. and S. Peoria Ave., offers an array of
activities and attractions such as a weight
and exercise room, an outdoor swimming
pool, general recreational activities and
meeting rooms.

Oklahoma in southwest Tulsa County. Jenks is
accessible by automobile within minutes from Interstate
44, U.S. 75, U.S. 64, and the Creek Turnpike.
Tulsa International Airport (TUL)
Located 20 minutes from Jenks, five million people are
served annually to more than 20 major airports with an
average of 90 departures per day. Flights access 95% of
the U.S. population within 2.5 hours flight time.
R.L. Jones Riverside Airport
Located at the northern boundary of Jenks, this 700acre facility is home to Spartan School of Aeronautics,
three other flight schools, and Tulsa Technology Center’s
aviation campus. Home to over 500 aircraft, R.L. Jones
Riverside Airport is the busiest airport for take-offs and
landings between Dallas and St. Louis.

Strength Through Diversification
A
s the gateway to the Arkansas River, Jenks has
set the standard in the region for riverfront and
destination entertainment development. Jenks is open
for business.
The city leaders of Jenks have stood by their
vision to keep the small town feel that makes Jenks
famous while maintaining a low-density model –
four residential dwelling units per acre. Over the
past nine years, Jenks has experienced a growth of
approximately 1,000 new residents each year. This
residential growth has occurred as the direct result of
the nationally recognized Jenks Public Schools and
Village on Main will feature diversity of architectural
form, function and appeal based on Smart Growth
principles and New Urbanism design.
RiverWalk Crossing is the region’s first riverfront
entertainment development. Visitors and residents
have enjoyed this exciting entertainment, shopping
and dining complex found nowhere else in
Oklahoma. Phase I offers over 150,000 square feet
of retail, office and restaurant space, including a freestanding movie theater.
Jenks is also home to a several international
industrial/manufacturing facilities. Kimberly
Clark Corporation, with a $600 million capital
investment, is one of their premier international
state-of-the art facilities. With 1.8 million square feet
of manufacturing and warehouse space, the Jenks
facility produces Cottonelle and Scott brand toilet
tissue, as well as Scott and Viva brand paper towels.

by other cities, Jenks city leaders have developed a
new comprehensive plan for the future that allows for
designated commercial areas and expands the usage
of the entertainment/tourism district.
Village on Main is a multi-million dollar mixeduse lifestyle development featured at the gateway of
the riverfront entrance with a 1,600 feet extension
to the existing Main Street. The development will
be comprised of 150,000 sq. ft. of high quality retail
and restaurants, 100+ units of urban residential
living, 120,000 sq. ft. of professional office space and
more. Unlike traditional conventional development,
Tulsa Winch, a division of the Tulsa Winch
Group, is owned by Dover Company. It was the first
company to locate in Jenks Commerce Park. This
83,000 square foot facility produces gear winches
and swing drives for the oilfield and construction
industry and recently completed a 168,000-squarefoot expansion which tripled the plant’s size, adding
280 additional jobs to the area. Continental Wire
Cloth, a manufacturer of high-quality wire cloth
screens for oil drilling processes built a new facility in
Jenks Commerce Park in 2008 after relocating from
Tulsa.
The tax base associated with these industrial
developments significantly adds to the quality of life
for Jenks residents through their support of a lower
ad valorem tax liability.
