Spring is sprung, the grass is ris. I wonders where the birdies

And what a great spring so far, car shows, cruise-ins and parades are everywhere. Two in particular I hope you catch are
Richmond Ford’s June 9th Cruise IN & Open House, 4600
West Broad St. (Remember how gracious Ron Kody was to
host our 60th anniversary banquet this past January?) Of
course next on the list is our own 43rd Annual Car Show and
Swap Meet – June 16th – Richmond International Raceway,
Gate #2 off Laburnum. We’ve had a good number of you sign
up to help this year – thank you! Please bring your old car to
display!
A little farther down the road we’ll have our Summer Picnic, Sunday, July 8 th at the Elmont
VFW Post on Cedar Lane in Ashland, (Rain or Shine.) Club will provide burgers, dogs, rolls &
drinks. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table service. Drive your old car too and why
not bring a friend or potential new member along? Please RSVP to Alice so we can have a
head count. August 5th is our annual Ice Cream Social at the Nash’s. See our website for more
details on both these events.
On May 4th George Duke, George Field and I made a quick trip to my home town of Dansville,
New York to pick up a 1940 Oldsmobile, Series 60 coupe given to me by a family friend. I’ve
known the car for nearly my whole life. I had the pleasure of working on it and driving it for several years in the late 1980s early 1990s. Rumor has it my Grandfather may have sold it new to
the Vogt family. It passed down their family tree and after nearly 95,000 miles to me. It was a
good trip apart from two flat tires on the trailer and one traffic ticket issued to a member of our
party. I won’t say who. We paid visits to Bennett Buick-Chevrolet, (celebrating 90 years as a
GM dealership this year,) and Hopkins’ Farms. Both places played large parts in my past life
and I was glad to introduce a couple of my new friends to them. They also carry good supplies
of used tires. Hopefully you’ll all see the Olds later this summer.
On May 3rd we tried something new – our regular meeting was held at Lakeside Farmer’s Market thanks to Peter Francisco. It was a nice evening outdoors and several of our members arrived early to eat at Virginia Barbecue or Cousin Vinny’s Pizza or wherever else. A real highlight was Joe Guckert’s magnificent 1935 Auburn. (I’m going to call it a convertible coupe, correct me if I’m wrong.) It is also supercharged with those neat pipes out the side and all. His
wife Debbie says it was always his dream car now it’s a dream come true! Joe, if you’re not
using the Porsche as much now maybe????

Getting There Is Half The Fun

As the club prepares for its 60th anniversary and
hosting the 2012 Reliability Tour, I got to thinking;
if getting there is half the fun we should have some
wonderful memories this time next year. As I’ve
had 24 years in this club, I think back on some of
the tours and outings I’ve been on and heard
about. So, as the Statler Brothers sang “Do you
remember these:” Riding to White Post Virginia in
mid-October in a member’s pickup with no heat;
while two former AT&T employees rode in a
Packard with a heater and said THEY were toasty;
A day tour over to the Aviation Museum, pushing
a member’s Pierce Arrow around the parking lot to
get started, then THEY realize they left the switch
off (As it turns out, it was good practice because I
got to do it again 20 years later.); A tour in NC
where a man who was born and raised in Ashland
knew a shortcut back to the motel, and they got
there about two hours after everyone else in 100+
degree heat; Day tours to a member’s house to see
his vast collection and hear the stories behind
them; Day tours where a Model T and bailing
twine are the official tow vehicle.
So as the 60 year mark approaches, those are some
of my memories of touring in our club. P.S. The
names were not used to protect the innocent, but
you know who you are.
