Welcome
Message from Mrs Brock - Headteacher
I would like to extend a warm welcome from the British International School Kuala Lumpur to
Dulwich College Seoul, International School Uplands Penang, St Andrews Green Valley, British
International School Beijing, British International School Guangzhou and Bangkok Prep School.
We are very proud to be hosting the annual Primary FOBISIA Games.
During the Games it is important to reflect on the values that we celebrate in sport, whether it is
unity, teamwork, hard work, determination or sportsmanship. Each and every one of you has
been chosen to represent your school because you have qualities that embrace these values,
and you should feel very proud of yourselves.
I look forward to meeting all those who have travelled to the Games and wish everyone the best
of luck.
Message from Mr.Harrie Thomson - Director of PE and Sport
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Kuala Lumpur for the 2016 Primary FOBISIA
Games hosted by the British International School of Kuala Lumpur. We are aiming to provide
your children and yourselves a memorable experience.
We are lucky to have a fantastic group of supportive parents, staff and administrators who have
worked tirelessly to produce what we hope will be a great FOBISIA Games. We will be utilising
some outstanding facilities and have very good officials who have worked at events like this
previously. A huge number of BSKL staff and students have come forward who wanted to be
part of these Games based on positive experiences from previous events – and we thank
everyone for their involvement.
A lot of work goes in to organising and preparing teams for FOBISIA Games: booking flights,
photographs, training sessions, kit, the list goes on and on. The teachers and coaches from your
respective schools will have put massive amounts of time and work in to attend these Games which is a credit to your schools. Thank you very much for supporting your children to be part of
this event. We hope that you also have a fantastic time spectating and hopefully you get to see
some of KL too.

Malaysia has a combined population of over 18 million people. Because of its central
location, between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, Malaysia has traditionally
been a meeting point for traders and travelers from both the East and West. As a result,
Malaysia has a multicultural and multiracial population consisting of Malays, Chinese,
Indians and numerous indigenous peoples. Although Malay is the official language,
English is widely spoken, especially in business, and the English language is a compulsory
subject in all schools.
With such a varying ethnic composition, it is no surprise that a great diversity of religions
is prevalent throughout Malaysia. Although the official religion is Islam, freedom of worship
is practiced. As a result, it is a common to see temples, mosques and churches within the
same area. As a visitor to Malaysia, you will have the opportunity to experience and
appreciate its rich historic and cultural heritage, exotic culinary delights, shopping
splendours, nature-based adventures, and fun-filled activities. The warm and hospitable
nature of its people will make your stay in Malaysia both pleasant and enjoyable.

Visa Information
No visa is required for a stay of less than one month for nationals of all ASEAN countries,
except Myanmar. For a stay exceeding one month a visa will be required, except for nationals
of Brunei and Singapore. For nationals of Israel, visas are required and permission must be
granted from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
*Citizens of China will be visa exempt between 1 March and 31 December 2016 for stays up to
15 days if they are travelling as a part of tour group with a minimum of 2 people.
Security Information
All visiting schools will be issued with security passes, which must be visible at all events. Your
respective teachers will supply these to you. BSKL parents must wear their school passes, if
you need a pass issued for a family member please do so at reception before the games start
as we will not be able to issue them during the weekend.
Currency
The Malaysian ringgit (plural: ringgits; symbol:
RM; currency code: MYR; formerly the Malaysian dollar) is the
currency of Malaysia. It is divided into 100 sen (cents). The
ringgit is issued by the Bank Negara Malaysia.

ATMs
Nearly all banks have ATM facilities, some of which accept foreign credit and debit cards. Look
for a respective label at the cash point machine. Several ATMs do not only permit withdrawals
but they also provide premium banking facilities and the option to transfer or deposit money.
Note that many ATMs are shut down after midnight for security reasons.

Sightseeing – Things to See in Kuala Lumpur
Petronas Towers
Petronas’ Twin Towers were once the tallest buildings in the world. Now the world’s tallest twin
structures, the 88-storey buildings were designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates with both towers
joined at the 41st and 42nd floors (175m above street level) by a 58 metre-long, double-decker
SkyBridge.
The towers give a fantastic photo opportunity from above and below. Also, stretching out to the
side of the Petronas Twin Towers is the spacious and beautifully landscaped KLCC Park which
features a jogging track, walking paths, a water fountain and a wading pool for children. Below
you will find the Suria KLCC mall.
Besides the mall and park, the Petronas Twin Towers have a host of other attractions including
the Petronas Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and the Petrosains Science Centre.

KL Menara Tower
Along with the Petronas Twin Towers, Menara KL is easily Malaysia’s most recognisable and
popular landmark. Constructed in 1994, the tower stands at 421 metres and effortlessly trumps
the Petronas Twin Towers for height with a viewing deck that is, at 276 metres, at least 100
metres higher than the Twin Towers’ Skybridge. Currently the 18th-tallest freestanding structure
in the world, Menara KL plays host to a revolving restaurant, Atmosphere 360.
Batu Caves
Batu Caves is an iconic and popular tourist attraction in Selangor. Site of a Hindu temple and
shrine, Batu Caves attracts thousands of worshippers and tourists, especially during the annual
Hindu festival, Thaipusam. A limestone outcrop located just north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves
has three main caves featuring temples and Hindu shrines. Its main attraction is the large statue
of the Hindu God at the entrance, besides a steep 272 climb up its steps to finally view the
stunning skyline of the city centre.

Jalan Alor Bukit Bintang
Called the cultural heart of the city’s local cuisine, Jalan Alor is one of the most famous roads in
Kuala Lumpur for food. Located just behind Jalan Bukit Bintang, it is basically a strip of
atmospheric air-conditioned Chinese seafood restaurants with a row of hawker stalls set up on
the five-foot walkway on both sides, with plastic tables and chairs spilling out onto the road.
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is the showpiece of the renowned Lake Gardens. Also known as the
Taman Burung Kuala Lumpur, it is billed as the world’s largest covered bird park. The park was
opened in 1991 and is home to more than 3,000 birds, from 200 species from all over the world.

Zoo Negara
Zoo Negara Malaysia is managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental
organisation established to create the first local zoo for Malaysians. Zoo Negara was officially
opened on 14th November 1963 and has matured into a well-known zoo all around the world.
They have a total of over 5137 specimens from 476 species of mammals, birds, reptiles,
amphibians and fish.
Zoo Negara covers 110 acres of land which is situated only 5km from the city of Kuala Lumpur.
Over the years, the zoo has transformed itself to an open concept zoo with over 90% of its
animals being kept in spacious exhibits with landscape befitting its nature.

Airport Returns and Transport
A taxi from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to The Royale Chulan Damansara Hotel will cost
approximately 80-100RM, and will take around one hour. At the bottom floor of the airport there
is an official taxi coupon counter, this will ensure you take a registered, metered taxi.
Whilst in Malaysia taxis can be booked through the GrabTaxi app, this is the best way to get
registered, metered taxis. The two taxi options that are advised are, Budget and GrabCar.

Supporters Code of Conduct
1. I won’t pressure my child in any way – I know that this is their sport not mine.
2. I will not use bad language, nor will I harass players, coaches, officials or other
spectators.
3. I will never argue with an official or administrator. If I disagree with a decision or have a
query, I will inform the coach or manager after the competition.
4. I will encourage my child to compete within the rules and respect officials’ and coaches’
decisions – no matter what.
5. I will teach my child to respect the efforts of their opponents.
6. I will remember that children learn best by example so I will applaud good
plays/performances by both my child’s team and their opponents.
7. I will give positive comments that motivate and encourage continued effort.
8. I will focus on the efforts and performance of my child and team – not the score.
9. I will thank the coaches, officials and other volunteers who give their time to conduct the
event for my child.
10. I will help when asked by a coach or official.
11. I won’t criticise or ridicule my child’s performance after the game.
12. I will respect the rights, dignity and worth of all people involved in the sport, regardless
