St. Leo Campus for Veterans

About
Through our emergency assistance program and senior residences, Catholic Charities has
a long history of serving veterans in need. From its inception in 1917, Catholic Charities
has helped veterans through its social services. Over the past 10 years, we have seen an
increasing number of veterans coming to us for services through our emergency assistance
centers, clothing rooms, food pantries, evening suppers, and transitional shelters. Catholic
Charities has two other programs specifically for veterans in addition to St. Leo. Catholic
Charities began working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in the summer of 2004
to create a residence for veterans battling addictions at the VA’s Hines Campus, located in
Chicago’s Western suburbs. The building, Cooke’s Manor, which was officially dedicated
as a new facility in 2005, now houses 40 Chicago-area veterans who would otherwise
be homeless. In 2006, Catholic Charities dedicated a second residence, Bishop Goedert
Residence, a senior facility with a preference for veterans, on the Hines Campus to house
veterans and veterans’ widows as well as some non-veteran senior citizens.

The campus, in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, is another monumental step in
Catholic Charities’ dream to keep veterans safe, off the streets, and treated with dignity.
The St. Leo Campus is comprised of Catholic Charities’ St. Leo Residence, the Auburn
Gresham Community-Based Outpatient Clinic and Resource Center, the St. Leo Veterans
Garden, and the Pope John Paul II Residence, which provides apartment housing for
persons who have physical disabilities.

Awards earned
The St. Leo Campus has earned the respect of numerous community groups. In 2008,
the St. Leo Campus was awarded a Special Recognition Award at LISC’s 2008 Community
Neighborhood Development Awards. Additionally, the project’s video submission to
the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives won first place from
a nationwide pool of applicants and was screened at the 2008 Innovations in Effective
Compassion Conference. In 2010 Catholic Charities USA honored St. Leo with its Centennial
Recognition Award. The award applauds socially innovative programs and services that
demonstrate effective results in the effort to reduce poverty in America.
how much:
Limited site based subsidy, 30% of adjusted gross income for rent and utilities excluding
telephone, is available through CHA, The Chicago Housing Choice Voucher, HUD VASH
Voucher Program and Shelter Plus Care Voucher Program for those who are eligible. After
initial occupancy, income will be recertified on an annual basis. (Changes in income larger
than $200/month must be reported immediately for rent calculation).
