supporters. On behalf of the women and children we serve, the volunteers,
the staff and the board of directors, we thank you for your generous support.
Thanks to you, our programs reached more than 16,000 people in 2008.
The overall theme of the report is Ending Domestic Violence is…, a recognition
that many efforts are involved in creating change. These efforts are reflected
in the ways you support our work with survivors, with young people, and with
new partnerships.

New Beginnings has been
providing domestic violence
victim services since 1976 —
a thirty-two year story
touching many thousands of
lives. In 2008, comprehensive
services were provided
Those who come to New Beginnings often have few options. They have been
controlled, manipulated and abused. They have been isolated from friends, family
and community. But still they have the courage to begin to take back their lives.
New Beginnings provides shelter, advocacy and support for victims of domestic
violence so they can become powerful and resourceful survivors.
The Help Line is often the first step. It is available
24 hours a day: as a resource for family and
friends, as an entry into emergency shelter, as a
place to talk over possibilities and as a source of
information and referrals.
The six-bedroom Emergency Shelter is a haven
for women and children in immediate danger,
prioritizing those who are at high risk.

interpreters for multiple languages needed at some support groups, we
received funding from Verizon Wireless for equipment. Interpretation can now
be provided quietly and simultaneously through wireless earpieces, resulting in
an accessible and peaceful experience for all. We also received funds from the
Kawabe Memorial Fund to underwrite interpreter costs.

behind. The Community
Advocacy Program
helps to rebuild lives:
through advocacy-based
counseling, support
groups, and linkages
to community services.
Legal Advocacy
Domestic violence survivors face many obstacles as they work to
rebuild their lives. Often some of their most urgent and most complex
concerns involve the legal system. Legal issues for survivors may
include marriage dissolution and child custody issues, filing protection
orders, sorting out their finances or updating their immigration status so
they can begin to create a new life.
New Beginnings offers legal advocacy to those in our programs, as
well as to survivors in the community. We partner with the King County
Bar Association to offer a Family Law Legal Clinic where community
members can meet with volunteer attorneys to fully understand their
best options, and begin the work toward resolving their legal issues.

Sometimes the choice is staying
and suffering the abuse, or taking
a leap to safety and risking
homelessness or impoverishment.

Domestic violence has serious
repercussions for the children
and teens who live with it. Half
of the people New Beginnings
serves are children and youth.
Each major agency program
has age-appropriate services
for young people. We know
that safety, a close relationship
with a non-abusive parent,
connections to other people
and opportunities to express
feelings can make all the
difference.
The New Beginnings Transitional Housing Program is a community of 17 furnished apartments for
single women and women with children. Each household may stay for up to eighteen months, so
residents can rebuild their lives and pursue the goals of permanent housing and increasing work or life
skills. Intensive on-site services are provided for women and children.
Bridges to Housing
New Beginnings is a collaborator in an innovative new project, Bridges to Housing, which
is helping to meet a growing need for low income housing with supportive services for
homeless domestic violence survivors. The project provides transitional housing that has the
potential to become permanent housing. Participants have the option to stay in their apartment after Bridges to Housing assistance
ends. Each year, for three years, New
Beginnings will have the opportunity to

H O P E, a Bridges to Housing resident
CHILL
Determination and self-confidence are the
goals. Snowboarding is the vehicle. Young
people from our Transitional Housing,
Emergency Shelter and Community Advocacy
programs have the opportunity to participate
in CHILL, Burton Snowboard’s six-week learnto-snowboard program. Burton donates all the
gear, including jackets, helmets, snowboards
and boots, allowing kids who have never been
to the mountains to learn to snowboard.
Each week is focused on one of the program’s
main elements of patience, persistence, responsibility, courage, respect and pride. CHILL
participants learn to look past their current
circumstances and start to dream about what
they could accomplish in the future, where
anything is possible.

Karate Class
A weekly karate class provides an opportunity
to learn respect, a quality often missing from
the lives of the children who reside in our
programs. Through the generosity of volunteers,
the karate class teaches how to harnesses the
power of martial arts for positive use, instead
of harm to others. Participants learn respect for
their classmates, their sensei, and themselves.
Over the course of the program, children learn
new moves, accomplish goals and begin to
realize that they deserve respect, both from
themselves and others.

Owning Up
New Beginnings’ Owning Up groups, facilitated
in Seattle middle schools by our Social Change
Program, offer an opportunity for youth to
learn about healthy relationships.
The sixteen-week Owning Up curriculum
supports youth in exploring issues such as
gender stereotypes, bullying, setting boundaries, and avoiding dating violence. Through
this program students find the courage to
speak out if they see or experience bad
conduct and to make positive changes in
their own behavior.
Some of our youth have their first experience
with intimate partner violence when they
begin to date. Buffeted between the strains
of peer pressure and the public portrayal of
gender stereotypes, young people sometimes
find themselves in controlling and abusive
relationships. Owning Up provides a forum
and trusted adults to make a difference.

Male Volunteers
For many of the women and children in our programs, the men in their lives have been
manipulative, controlling, angry, and often, violent. The men who volunteer with New Beginnings
show through their example that men can be loving, respectful and caring individuals.
At New Beginnings male volunteers set up Transitional Housing apartments, answer our Help
Line, facilitate Owning Up groups, and provide child care for children while their mothers are in
support groups. Through their interactions with the women and children we serve, they are able
to demonstrate healthy, respectful relationships.

Steps Against
Domestic Violence
On October 5, 2008 over 200 participants
from the Seattle area walked the 2.8 mile
trail around Greenlake in memory of Marisa
Peach and others who have lost their lives
to domestic violence. Through the hard
work and determination of the Peach family
and the generous support of all those that
attended, the first Steps Against Domestic
Violence – Seattle walk raised over $7,000
for New Beginnings.
Boys Will Be Men
New Beginnings, in collaboration with a
number of community partners, hosted a
workshop on September 25 called Boys Will
Be Men: Raising our Sons for Courage, Caring
and Community. The workshop was attended
by 54 community members including parents,
mentors, teachers, volunteers, youth workers
and social workers. Paul Kivel, a social justice
educator, activist and writer from Oakland,
CA, spoke to the group about raising healthy
boys and involving men in the work to end
domestic violence.

Every day New Beginnings helps
individuals find safety and move
beyond the violence in their lives.
But we cannot end domestic
violence without changing the
attitudes and social institutions
that perpetuate violence. Through
community events, training,
outreach and our publications we
raise awareness about domestic
violence and how each of us can
make a difference.
Family to Family
Although we serve people from a wide variety of religious and cultural
traditions, many observe Christmas. And each Christmas season
members of the community have the opportunity to play Santa’s helper
in our programs. In 2008, over 30 businesses, community groups,
and individuals donated gifts that might give a mother the chance to
surprise her children with brand new toys or that might provide the
basic items to set up a new home after leaving New
Beginnings. Although the weather was a formidable
obstacle, these generous people let nothing get in
the way of making our program participants’ holiday
season happy and memorable. 45 very low income
families received just what they asked for. It was a
very joyful holiday.

Day of Caring
In a household that provides housing to hundreds of women and children throughout the
year, our Emergency Shelter’s refuge room is often the calm in the storm. It’s for adults
only, no children allowed. Women can spend time relaxing, away from the noise of a busy
household and watch a movie, write in their journal, pray or simply reflect on their journey.
A sloping floor was not an asset! Fortunately, 21 Microsoft employees volunteering on
United Way’s Day of Caring came ready to help. In just one day, they leveled the floor and
accomplished countless other projects around the
shelter household. They painted walls, opened
up a cramped room by removing a closet, deep
cleaned the kitchen and spruced up the front
and back yards. They also provided lots of smiles
while working and reminded us what a difference
caring individuals can make in just one day.

our Benefit Lunch and agreed that “It’s Everyone’s Business to Stop
Domestic Violence.” The J.W. Nordstrom room at the downtown
Nordstrom was packed with business and community leaders and
long-time supporters of New Beginnings. Speakers reminded all
of us that we, as individuals in the workplace and the community
at large, have a responsibility to recognize abuse and support
domestic violence victims. Through guests’
generosity, the event raised more
than $140,000 to end domestic
violence in our community.
